My initial goal was to fix our gdb/testsuite/lib/tuiterm.exp such that
it would correctly support (some limited) scrolling of the command
window.
What I observe is that when sending commands to the tui command window
in a test script with:
Term::command "p 1"
The command window would be left looking like this:
(gdb)
(gdb) p 1$1 = 1
(gdb)
When I would have expected it to look like this:
(gdb) p 1
$1 = 1
(gdb)
Obviously a bug in our tuiterm.exp library, right???
Wrong!
Turns out there's a bug in GDB.
If in GDB I enable the tui and then type (slowly) the 'p 1\r' (the \r
is pressing the return key at the end of the string), then you do
indeed get the "expected" terminal output.
However, if instead I copy the 'p 1\r' string and paste it into the
tui in one go then I now see the same corrupted output as we do when
using tuiterm.exp.
It turns out the problem is that GDB fails when handling lots of input
arriving quickly with a \r (or \n) on the end.
The reason for this bug is as follows:
When the tui is active the terminal is in no-echo mode, so characters
sent to the terminal are not echoed out again. This means that when
the user types \r, this is not echoed to the terminal.
The characters read in are passed to readline and \r indicates that
the command line is complete and ready to be processed. However, the
\r is not included in readlines command buffer, and is NOT printed by
readline when is displays its buffer to the screen.
So, in GDB we have to manually spot the \r when it is read in and
update the display. Printing a newline character to the output and
moving the cursor to the next line. This is done in tui_getc_1.
Now readline tries to reduce the number of write calls. So if we very
quickly (as in paste in one go) the text 'p 1' to readline (this time
with no \r on the end), then readline will fetch the fist character
and add it to its internal buffer. But before printing the character
out readline checks to see if there's more input incoming. As we
pasted multiple characters, then yes, readline sees the ' ' and adds
this to its buffer, and finally the '1', this too is added to the
buffer.
Now if at this point we take a break, readline sees there is no more
input available, and so prints its buffer out.
Now when we press \r the code in tui_getc_1 kicks in, adds a \n to the
output and moves the cursor to the next line.
But, if instead we paste 'p 1\r' in one go then readline adds 'p 1' to
its buffer as before, but now it sees that there is still more input
available. Now it fetches the '\r', but this triggers the newline
behaviour, we print '\n' and move to the next line - however readline
has not printed its buffer yet!
So finally we end up on the next line. There's no more input
available so readline prints its buffer, then GDB gets passed the
buffer, handles it, and prints the result.
The solution I think is to put of our special newline insertion code
until we know that readline has finished printing its buffer. Handily
we know when this is - the next thing readline does is pass us the
command line buffer for processing. So all we need to do is hook in
to the command line processing, and before we pass the command line to
GDB's internals we do all of the magic print a newline and move the
cursor to the next line stuff.
Luckily, GDB's interpreter mechanism already provides the hooks we
need to do this. So all I do here is move the newline printing code
from tui_getc_1 into a new function, setup a new input_handler hook
for the tui, and call my new newline printing function.
After this I can enable the tui and paste in 'p 1\r' and see the
correct output.
Also the tuiterm.exp library will now see non-corrupted output.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* tui/tui-interp.c (tui_command_line_handler): New function.
(tui_interp::resume): Register tui_command_line_handler as the
input_handler.
* tui/tui-io.c (tui_inject_newline_into_command_window): New
function.
(tui_getc_1): Delete handling of '\n' and '\r'.
* tui-io.h (tui_inject_newline_into_command_window): Declare.
gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:
* gdb.tui/scroll.exp: Tighten expected results. Remove comment
about bug in GDB, update expected results, and add more tests.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

Assign names to event loop file handlers. They will be used in debug
messages when file handlers are invoked.
In GDB, each UI used to get its own unique number, until commit
cbe256847e19 ("Remove ui::num"). Re-introduce this field, and use it to
make a unique name for the handler.
I'm not too sure what goes on in ser-base.c, all I know is that it's
what is used when debugging remotely. I've just named the main handler
"serial". It would be good to have unique names there too. For instance
when debugging with two different remote connections, we'd ideally want
the handlers to have unique names. I didn't do it in this patch though.

This rewrites tui_puts. It now writes as many bytes as possible in a
call to waddnstr, letting curses handle multi-byte sequences properly.
Note that tui_puts_internal remains. It is needed to handle computing
the start line of the readline prompt, which is difficult to do
properly in the case where redisplaying can also cause the command
window to scroll. This might be possible to implement by reverting to
single "character" output, by using mbsrtowcs for its side effects to
find character boundaries in the input. I have not attempted this.

function, in favor of a tab-expanding variant of string_file. This
simplifies the code somewhat.
gdb/ChangeLog
2020-07-01 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* tui/tui-regs.h (struct tui_data_item_window) <content>: Now a
std::string.
* tui/tui-regs.c (class tab_expansion_file): New.
(tab_expansion_file::write): New method.
(tui_register_format): Change return type. Use
tab_expansion_file.
(tui_get_register, tui_data_window::display_registers_from)
(tui_data_item_window::rerender): Update.
* tui/tui-io.h (tui_expand_tabs): Don't declare.
* tui/tui-io.c (tui_expand_tabs): Remove.

PR tui/25348 points out that, when "gdb -tui" is used, then exiting
the TUI will cause a crash.
This happens because tui_setup_io stashes some readline variables --
but because this happens before readline is initialized, some of these
are NULL. Then, when exiting the TUI, the NULL values are "restored",
causing a crash in readline.
This patch fixes the problem by ensuring that readline is initialized
first. Back in commit 11061048d ("Give a name to the TUI SingleKey
keymap"), a call to rl_initialize was removed from
tui_initialize_readline; this patch resurrects the call, but moves it
to the end of the function, so as not to remove the ability to modify
the SingleKey map from .inputrc.

do_tui_putc has some code to remove annotations from gdb output. This
was added in 2001, see commit a198b876bbcb.
However, I think this code is not needed. It seems very unlikely to
enable both annotations and the TUI, and in any case I think this is
something that should not be supported.
So, this patch removes this code.

This changes tui_data_item_window::content to be a unique_xmalloc_ptr
and fixes up the fallout. It also removes a parameter from
tui_expand_tabs, as it was only ever given one value.
This also removes some tab-handling code from
tui_data_window::display_registers_from. Because the content can only
be set by tui_register_format, and because that calls tui_expand_tabs,
it's not possible to see a tab here.

The TUI currently has two different ways to resize a window: the
resize method, and the methods make_invisible_and_set_new_height and
make_visible_with_new_height.
There's no deep reason to have two different ways to resize a window,
so this patch unifies them, leaving just the "resize" method.
This also changes the locator to be handled more like an ordinary
window and less like an adjunct of the associated source window.

A while back I changed gdb not to flush in some places. It turned out
that this broke the TUI a little. An easy way to see it is to run
"gdb -tui -nx", then "file gdb" at the gdb prompt. gdb will print the
usual "Reading symbols..." message -- but it won't appear on-screen
until the reading is complete.
This patch changes the TUI to do the equivalent of line buffering in
tui_puts_internal.

This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.
This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.
I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.
Tested by the buildbot.

This changes tui_win_info to derive from tui_gen_win_info, rather than
having a tui_gen_win_info as a member. This removes a layer of member
access from the entire TUI, which is why this patch is so large. This
change will enable further removal of switches based on window type.

I noticed some unnecessary casts of NULL. This removes all the
unnecessary ones, leaving only ones where we must ensure that NULL has
pointer type for passing through varargs.
I removed a couple of useless casts of 0 that I noticed while writing
this.
Tested by rebuilding.

gdb/ChangeLog:
2019-03-18 Eli Zaretskii <eliz@gnu.org>
* tui/tui-io.c (gdb_wgetch): Don't echo CR.
(tui_getc): When gdb_wgetch returns a CR, behave the same as when
it returns a newline. This fixes a regression in TUI mode, whereby
the next line is output on the same screen line as the user input.
|
|
With styling enabled, I think the way we display the TUI's
highlighted/current line is very ugly and distracting. The problem in
my view is that we reverse foreground/background in colored text as
well, leading to rainbow of background colors.
This patch changes that to something that I find much more sensible --
only reverse the default foreground/background colors, leave styled
text colors alone. If the foreground color is not the default
(because the text was styled), leave the foreground color as is. If
e.g., the terminal is fg=BLACK, and bg=WHITE, and the style wants to
print text in RED, reverse the background color (print in BLACK), but
still print the text in RED.
Note: The new ui_file_style::set_fg method isn't called set_foreground
instead, because set_foreground is a macro in /usr/lib/term.h (ncurses).
gdb/ChangeLog:
2019-03-18 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com>
* tui/tui-io.c (reverse_mode_p, reverse_save_bg, reverse_save_fg):
New globals.
(apply_style): New, factored out from ...
(apply_ansi_escape): ... this. Handle reverse video mode.
(tui_set_reverse_mode): New function.
* tui/tui-io.h (tui_set_reverse_mode): New declaration.
* tui/tui-winsource.c (tui_show_source_line): Use
tui_set_reverse_mode instead of setting A_STANDOUT.
* ui-style.h (struct ui_file_style) <set_reverse, set_fg, set_bg>:
New setter methods.

The MS-Windows port of ncurses fails to switch to a color pair if
one or both of the colors are the implicit default colors. This
change records the default colors when TUI is initialized, and
then specifies them explicitly when a color pair uses the default
colors. This allows color styling in TUI mode on MS-Windows.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2019-03-14 Eli Zaretskii <eliz@gnu.org>
* tui/tui-io.c [__MINGW32__]: Include windows.h. Declare
ncurses_norm_attr.
(tui_initialize_io) [__MINGW32__]: Record the default terminal
colors in ncurses_norm_attr.
(apply_ansi_escape) [__MINGW32__]: If a color in a color pair is
"none", replace it with the default color recorded in
ncurses_norm_attr.

This changes all includes to use the form "common/filename.h" rather
than just "filename.h". This was written by a script.

The fix for PR tui/28819 regressed gdb command output a bit. In
"nonl" mode, pressing the Enter key will result in a newline not being
echoed properly, so that gdb output for the command will begin on the
same line as the input.
This patch changes gdb_wgetch to echo the newline. I have only tested
this interactively, as the TUI doesn't have automated tests in
general.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

This changes gdb to highlight source using GNU Source Highlight, if it

This affects the output of the "list" command and also the TUI source
window.
No new test because I didn't see a way to make it work when Source

PR tui/14126 notes that ANSI terminal escape sequences don't affect
the colors shown in the TUI. A simple way to see this is to try the
extended-prompt example from the gdb manual.
Curses does not pass escape sequences through to the terminal.
Instead, it replaces non-printable characters with a visible
representation, for example "^[" for the ESC character.
This patch fixes the problem by adding a simple ANSI terminal sequence
parser to gdb. These sequences are decoded and those that are
recognized are turned into the appropriate curses calls.
The curses approach to color handling is unusual and so there are some
oddities in the implementation.
Standard curses has no notion of the default colors of the terminal.
So, if you set the foreground color, it is not possible to reset it --
you have to pick some other color. ncurses provides an extension to
handle this, so this patch updates configure and uses it when
available.
Second, in curses, colors always come in pairs: you cannot set just
the foreground. This patch handles this by tracking actually-used
pairs of colors and keeping a table of these for reuse.
Third, there are a limited number of such pairs available. In this
patch, if you try to use too many color combinations, gdb will just
ignore some color changes.
Finally, in addition to limiting the number of color pairs, curses
also limits the number of colors. This means that, when using
extended 8- or 24-bit color sequences, it may be possible to exhaust
the curses color table.
I am very sour on the curses design now.
I do not know how to write a test for this, so I did not.

PR tui/28819 points out that, in the TUI, the C-j and C-m keys cannot
be bound differently in one's ~/.inputrc. However, this works in
other readline applications.
The bug is that the TUI uses curses' "nl" mode, which causes wgetch to
return the same value for both keys. There is a "nonl" mode, but it
also affects output.
This patch fixes the bug by arranging to call nonl before reading a
key and then nl afterward. This avoids any potential problem with
changing the output if gdb was to use nonl globally.

Commit d7e747318f4d04 ("Eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete / make
ui_file a class hierarchy") regressed the TUI's command window.
Newlines miss doing a "carriage return", resulting in output like:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(gdb) helpList of classes of commands:
aliases -- Aliases of other commands
breakpoints -- Making program stop at certain points
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Before the commit mentioned above, the default ui_file->to_write
implementation had a hack that would defer into the ui_file->to_fputs
method. The TUI's ui_file did not implement the to_write method, so
all writes would end up going to the ncurses window via tui_file_fputs
-> tui_puts.
After the commit above, the hack is gone, but the TUI's ui_file still
does not implement the ui_file::write method. Since tui_file inherits
from stdio_file, writing to a tui_file ends up doing fwrite on the
FILE stream the TUI is "associated" with, via stdio_file::write,
instead of writing to the ncurses window.
The fix is to have tui_file override the "write" method.
New test included.

This patch starts from the desire to eliminate
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete, but then goes beyond. It makes ui_file &
friends a real C++ class hierarchy, and switches temporary
ui_file-like objects to stack-based allocation.
- mem_fileopen -> string_file
mem_fileopen is replaced with a new string_file class that is treated
as a value class created on the stack. This alone eliminates most
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete calls, and, simplifies code a whole lot
(diffstat shows around 1k loc dropped.)
string_file's internal buffer is a std::string, thus the "string" in
the name. This simplifies the implementation much, compared to
mem_fileopen, which managed growing its internal buffer manually.
- ui_file_as_string, ui_file_strdup, ui_file_obsavestring all gone
The new string_file class has a string() method that provides direct
writable access to the internal std::string buffer. This replaced
ui_file_as_string, which forced a copy of the same data the stream had
inside. With direct access via a writable reference, we can instead
move the string out of the string_stream, avoiding deep string
copying.
Related, ui_file_xstrdup calls are replaced with xstrdup'ping the
stream's string, and ui_file_obsavestring is replaced by
obstack_copy0.
With all those out of the way, getting rid of the weird ui_file_put
mechanism was possible.
- New ui_file::printf, ui_file::puts, etc. methods
These simplify / clarify client code. I considered splitting
client-code changes, like these, e.g.:
- stb = mem_fileopen ();
- fprintf_unfiltered (stb, "%s%s%s",
- _("The valid values are:\n"),
- regdesc,
- _("The default is \"std\"."));
+ string_file stb;
+ stb.printf ("%s%s%s",
+ _("The valid values are:\n"),
+ regdesc,
+ _("The default is \"std\"."));
In two steps, with the first step leaving fprintf_unfiltered (etc.)
calls in place, and only afterwards do a pass to change all those to
call stb.printf etc.. I didn't do that split, because (when I tried),
it turned out to be pointless make-work: the first pass would have to
touch the fprintf_unfiltered line anyway, to replace "stb" with
"&stb".
- gdb_fopen replaced with stack-based objects
This avoids the need for cleanups or unique_ptr's. I.e., this:
struct ui_file *file = gdb_fopen (filename, "w");
if (filename == NULL)
perror_with_name (filename);
cleanups = make_cleanup_ui_file_delete (file);
// use file.
do_cleanups (cleanups);
is replaced with this:
stdio_file file;
if (!file.open (filename, "w"))
perror_with_name (filename);
// use file.
- odd contorsions in null_file_write / null_file_fputs around when to
call to_fputs / to_write eliminated.
- Global null_stream object
A few places that were allocating a ui_file in order to print to
"nowhere" are adjusted to instead refer to a new 'null_stream' global
stream.
- TUI's tui_sfileopen eliminated. TUI's ui_file much simplified
The TUI's ui_file was serving a dual purpose. It supported being used
as string buffer, and supported being backed by a stdio FILE. The
string buffer part is gone, replaced by using of string_file. The
'FILE *' support is now much simplified, by making the TUI's ui_file
inherit from stdio_file.

This applies the second part of GDB's End of Year Procedure, which
updates the copyright year range in all of GDB's files.
gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
|
|
This patch finalizes the C++ conversion of the ui-out subsystem, by
turning the ui_out and ui_out_impl structures into a single class
hierarchy. ui_out functions are turned into virtual methods of that new
class, so as a result there are a lot of call sites to update.
In the previous version of the patchset, there were separate ui_out and
ui_out_impl classes, but it wasn't really useful and added boilerplate.
In this version there is simply an ui_out base class that is
extended for CLI, TUI and MI.
It's a bit hard to maintain a ChangeLog for such a big patch, I did my
best but I'm sure there are some missing or outdated info in there...

Due to the way that readline's API works (based on globals), we can
only have one instance of readline in a process. So the goal of this
patch is to only allow editing in the main UI, and make sure that only
one UI calls into readline. Some MI paths touch readline variables
currently, which is bad as that is changing variables that matter for
the main console UI. This patch fixes those.
This actually fixes a nasty bug -- starting gdb in MI mode ("gdb
-i=mi"), and then doing "set editing on" crashes GDB, because MI is
not prepared to use readline:
set editing on
&"set editing on\n"
=cmd-param-changed,param="editing",value="on"
^done
(gdb)

readline: readline_callback_read_char() called with no handler!
Aborted (core dumped)
The fix for that was to add an interp_proc method to query the
interpreter whether it actually supports editing. New test included.

As can be seen in the tui_redisplay_readline comment:
"The command could call prompt_for_continue and we must not restore
SingleKey so that the prompt and normal keymap are used."
immediate_quit is being used as proxy for "secondary prompt".
We have a better predicate nowadays, so use it.

* tui/tui-io.c (tui_redisplay_readline): Check
gdb_in_secondary_prompt_p instead of immediate_quit.
* tui/tui.c: Include top.h.
(tui_rl_startup_hook): Check gdb_in_secondary_prompt_p instead of
immediate_quit.

Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the
allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when
assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case
more often than not).
The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit
"(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I
validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to
make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I
could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc.
Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing
it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time.
Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This
means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be
dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to
build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't
know.
I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.
Here's the changelog entry, which was not too bad to make despite the
size, thanks to David Malcom's script. I fixed some bits by hand, but
there might be some wrong parts left (hopefully not).

This patch fixes the following bug in TUI:
(gdb) break foo
No symbol table is loaded. Use the "file" command.
Make breakpoint pending on future shared library load? (y or [n]) <ENTER>
By submitting an empty command line to a secondary prompt, the line
corresponding to the secondary prompt is undesirably cleared and
overwritten. Outside of a secondary prompt, clearing the prompt line
after submitting an empty command line is intended behavior which
complements GDB's repeat-command shorthand. But inside a secondary
prompt, this behavior is undesired since the shorthand is not applicable
in that case. We should retain the secondary-prompt line even when it's
given no input.
This patch makes sure that a prompt that was given an empty command line
is cleared and overwritten only if it's not a secondary prompt. To
acheive this, a new predicate is defined which informs us whether the
current input handler is a secondary prompt.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* top.h (gdb_in_secondary_prompt_p): Declare.
* top.c (gdb_secondary_prompt_depth): Define.
(gdb_in_secondary_prompt_p): Define.
(gdb_readline_wrapper_cleanup): Decrement

(gdb_readline_wrapper): Increment gdb_secondary_prompt_depth.
* tui/tui-io.c (tui_getc): Don't clear the prompt line if we
are in a secondary prompt.

This is necessary to make sure that start_line is updated after a
command has been entered. Usually, start_line gets updated anyway
because most commands output text, and outputting text is done through
the function tui_puts, which updates start_line. However if a command
does not output text, then tui_puts will not get called and start_line
will not get updated in time for the next prompt to be displayed.
One can observe this bug by executing the command "delete" within TUI.
After executing, the prompt line
(gdb) delete
gets overwritten by the next prompt. With this patch, the prompt line
gets preserved.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* tui/tui-io.c (tui_getc): Use tui_putc instead of waddch to
emit the newline.

These fields are currently used to track the location of the cursor
inside the command window. But their usefulness is questionable because
ncurses already internally keeps track of the location of the cursor,
whose coordinates we can query using the functions getyx(), getcurx() or
getcury(). It is an unnecessary pain to keep these fields in sync with
ncurses, and their meaning is not well-defined anyway. For instance, it
is not clear whether the coordinates held in these fields are
authoritative, or whether the coordinates reported by ncurses are.
So to keep things simple, this patch removes these fields and replaces
existing reads of these fields with calls to the appropriate ncurses
querying functions, and replaces writes to these fields with calls to
wmove() (when necessary and applicable).
In the function tui_cont_sig(), I removed the call to wmove() entirely
because moving to (start_line, curch) makes no sense. The move should
have been to (cur_line, curch) -- which would now be a no-op.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 22, no obvious regressions.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* tui/tui-data.h (tui_command_info): Remove fields cur_line and
curch.
* tui/tui-data.c (tui_clear_win_detail) [CMD_WIN]: Don't set
cur_line or curch, instead call wmove().

* tui/tui-io.c (tui_puts): Likewise. Don't read cur_line,
instead call getcury().
(tui_redisplay_readline): Don't set cur_line or curch.
(tui_mld_erase_entire_line): Don't read cur_line, instead call
getcury().
(tui_cont_sig): Remove call to wmove.
(tui_getc): Don't read cur_line or curch, instead call getcury()
or getyx(). Don't set curch.
* tui/tui-win.c (make_visible_with_new_height) [CMD_WIN]: Don't
set cur_line or curch. Always move cursor to (0,0).
