Instead, make symtab_and_line initialize its members itself. Many symtab_and_line declarations are moved to where the object is initialized at the same time both for clarity and to avoid double initialization. 2017-02-02Eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete / make ui_file a class hierarchyPedro Alves1-11/+7
This patch starts from the desire to eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete, but then goes beyond. It makes ui_file & friends a real C++ class hierarchy, and switches temporary ui_file-like objects to stack-based allocation. - mem_fileopen -> string_file mem_fileopen is replaced with a new string_file class that is treated as a value class created on the stack. This alone eliminates most make_cleanup_ui_file_delete calls, and, simplifies code a whole lot (diffstat shows around 1k loc dropped.) string_file's internal buffer is a std::string, thus the "string" in the name. This simplifies the implementation much, compared to mem_fileopen, which managed growing its internal buffer manually. - ui_file_as_string, ui_file_strdup, ui_file_obsavestring all gone The new string_file class has a string() method that provides direct writable access to the internal std::string buffer. This replaced ui_file_as_string, which forced a copy of the same data the stream had inside. With direct access via a writable reference, we can instead move the string out of the string_stream, avoiding deep string copying. Related, ui_file_xstrdup calls are replaced with xstrdup'ping the stream's string, and ui_file_obsavestring is replaced by obstack_copy0. With all those out of the way, getting rid of the weird ui_file_put mechanism was possible. - New ui_file::printf, ui_file::puts, etc. methods These simplify / clarify client code. I didn't do that split, because (when I tried), it turned out to be pointless make-work: the first pass would have to touch the fprintf_unfiltered line anyway, to replace "stb" with "&stb". - gdb_fopen replaced with stack-based objects This avoids the need for cleanups or unique_ptr's. TUI's ui_file much simplified The TUI's ui_file was serving a dual purpose. It supported being used as string buffer, and supported being backed by a stdio FILE. The string buffer part is gone, replaced by using of string_file. The code that fills the TUI disassembly window content first calculates the maximum full length of a displayed disassembly line. This calculation typically yields the wrong result. The result is too large, so the bug does not cause any run-time failures, but unnecessary confusion for the reader. A user reported a GDB crash with TUI when trying to debug a function with a long demangled C++ method name. It turned out that the logic for displaying the TUI disassembly window has a bug that can cause a buffer overrun, possibly overwriting GDB-internal data structures. In particular, the logic performs an unguarded strcpy. Another (harmless) bug in tui_alloc_source_buffer causes the buffer to be two lines longer than needed. This may have made the crash appear less frequently. gdb/ChangeLog: * tui/tui-disasm.c (tui_set_disassem_content): Fix line buffer overrun due to unchecked strcpy. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: * gdb.base/tui-layout.c: New file. * gdb.base/tui-layout.exp: Use tui-layout.c, to ensure that the disassembly window contains very long lines.

This patch is part of the make-gdb-buildable-in-C++ effort. The idea is to change some calls to the xmalloc family of functions to calls to the equivalents in the XNEW family. This avoids adding an explicit cast, so it keeps the code a bit more readable. Some of them also map relatively well to a C++ equivalent (XNEW (struct foo) -> new foo), so it will be possible to do scripted replacements if needed. I only changed calls that were obviously allocating memory for one or multiple "objects". Allocation of variable sizes (such as strings or buffer handling) will be for later (and won't use XNEW). - xmalloc (sizeof (struct foo)) -> XNEW (struct foo) - xmalloc (num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XNEWVEC (struct foo, num) - xcalloc (1, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XCNEW (struct foo) - xcalloc (num, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XCNEWVEC (struct foo, num) - xrealloc (p, num * sizeof (struct foo) -> XRESIZEVEC (struct foo, p, num) - obstack_alloc (ob, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XOBNEW (ob, struct foo) - obstack_alloc (ob, num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XOBNEWVEC (ob, struct foo, num) - alloca (sizeof (struct foo)) -> XALLOCA (struct foo) - alloca (num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XALLOCAVEC (struct foo, num) Some instances of xmalloc followed by memset to zero the buffer were replaced by XCNEW or XCNEWVEC. I regtested on x86-64, Ubuntu 14.04, but the patch touches many architecture-specific files. 2014-02-26start change to progspace independenceTom Tromey1-6/+7
This patch starts changing minimal symbols to be independent of the program space. Specifically, it adds a new objfile parameter to MSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS and changes all the code to use it. This is needed so we can change gdb to apply the section offset when a minsym's address is computed, as opposed to baking the offsets into the symbol itself. A few spots still need the unrelocated address. For these, we introduce MSYMBOL_VALUE_RAW_ADDRESS. As a convenience, we also add the new macro BMSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS, which computes the address of a bound minimal symbol. This just does the obvious thing with the fields. Note that this change does not actually enable program space independence. That requires more changes to gdb. This patch changes a few minimal symbol lookup functions to return a bound_minimal_symbol rather than a pointer to the minsym. This change helps prepare gdb for computing a minimal symbol's address at the point of use. Note that this changes even those functions that ostensibly search a single objfile. That was necessary because, in fact, those functions can search an objfile and its separate debug objfiles; and it is important for the caller to know in which objfile the minimal symbol was actually found. In a later patch we're going to change the minimal symbol address calculation to apply section offsets at the point of use. To make it simpler to catch potential problem spots, this patch changes the representation of minimal symbols and introduces new minimal-symbol-specific variants of the various accessors. This is necessary because it would be excessively ambitious to try to convert all the symbol types at once.
