The function execute_command_to_string had two header comments, one in
gdbcmd.h and one in top.c.
This commit merges the two comments into one and places this comment
in gdbcmd.h. The comment in top.c is updated to just reference
gdbcmd.h.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* gdbcmd.h (execute_command_to_string): Update comment.
* top.c (execute_command_to_string): Update header comment.

This commit adds a new 'version' style, which replaces the hard coded
styling currently used for GDB's version string. GDB's version number
is displayed:
1. In the output of 'show version', and
2. When GDB starts up (without the --quiet option).
This new style can only ever affect the first of these two cases as
the second case is printed before GDB has processed any initialization
files, or processed any GDB commands passed on the command line.
However, because the first case exists I think this commit makes
sense, it means the style is no longer hard coded into GDB, and we can
add some tests that the style can be enabled/disabled correctly.
This commit is an alternative to a patch Tom posted here:
https://sourceware.org/pipermail/gdb-patches/2020-June/169820.html
I've used the style name 'version' instead of 'startup' to reflect
what the style is actually used for. If other parts of the startup
text end up being highlighted I imagine they would get their own
styles based on what is being highlighted. I feel this is more inline
with the other style names that are already in use within GDB.
I also decoupled adding this style from the idea of startup options,
and the possibility of auto-saving startup options. Those ideas can
be explored in later patches.
This commit should probably be considered only a partial solution to
issue PR cli/25956. The colours of the style are no longer hard
coded, however, it is still impossible to change the styling of the
version string displayed during startup, so in one sense, the styling
of that string is still "hard coded". A later patch will hopefully
extend GDB to allow it to adjust the version styling before the
initial version string is printed.

I noticed that deprecated aliases that have a prefix don't give a
deprecated command warning. For example looking in mi/mi-main.c we
see this:
c = add_alias_cmd ("target-async", "mi-async", class_run, 0, &setlist);
deprecate_cmd (c, "set mi-async");
c = add_alias_cmd ("target-async", "mi-async", class_run, 0, &showlist);
deprecate_cmd (c, "show mi-async");
So both 'set target-async' and 'show target-async' are deprecated and
should be giving a warning, however, in use we see no warning given.
This is a consequence of how the code that should give this
warning (deprecated_cmd_warning) performs a second command lookup in
order to distinguish between aliases and real commands, and that the
code that calls this (lookup_cmd_1) strips off prefix commands as it
calls itself recursively.
As a result when we are considering an alias like 'set target-async'
we first enter lookup_cmd_1 with text = "set target-async", we spot
the 'set' command prefix and then recursively call lookup_cmd_1 with
text = "target-async".
We spot that 'target-async' is a known alias but that it is
deprecated, and so call deprecated_cmd_warning passing in the value of
text, which remember is now "target-async".
In deprecated_cmd_warning we again perform a command lookup starting
from the top-level cmdlist, but now we're trying to find just
"target-async", this fails (as this command requires the 'set' prefix,
and so no warning is given.
I resolved this issue by passing a command list to the function
deprecated_cmd_warning, this is the list in which the command can be
found.
A new test is added to cover this case.
However, there is an additional problem which will be addressed in a
subsequent patch.
Consider this GDB session:
(gdb) define set xxx_yyy
Type commands for definition of "set xxx_yyy".
End with a line saying just "end".
>echo in set xxx_yyy command\n
>end
(gdb) alias set qqq_aaa=set xxx_yyy
(gdb) maintenance deprecate set qqq_aaa
(gdb) set qqq_aaa
Warning: 'qqq_aaa', an alias for the command 'xxx_yyy' is deprecated.
No alternative known.
in set xxx_yyy command
(gdb)
Notice the warning mentions 'qqq_aaa' and 'xxx_yyy', I consider this
to be wrong. I think the proper warning should read:
(gdb) set qqq_aaa
Warning: 'set qqq_aaa', an alias for the command 'set xxx_yyy' is deprecated.
No alternative known.
With the 'set' prefixes added. A later patch will resolve this
issue.
gdb/ChangeLog:
PR cli/15104
* cli/cli-decode.c (lookup_cmd_1): Pass command list to
deprecated_cmd_warning.
(deprecated_cmd_warning): Take extra parameter, call
lookup_cmd_composition_1 and pass new parameter through.
(lookup_cmd_composition_1): New function, takes implementation of
lookup_cmd_composition but with extra parameter.
(lookup_cmd_composition): Now calls lookup_cmd_composition_1
passing in cmdlist.
* command.h (deprecated_cmd_warning): Add extra parameter to
declaration.
* top.c (execute_command): Pass cmdlist to deprecated_cmd_warning.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

Assign names to event loop file handlers. They will be used in debug
messages when file handlers are invoked.
In GDB, each UI used to get its own unique number, until commit
cbe256847e19 ("Remove ui::num"). Re-introduce this field, and use it to
make a unique name for the handler.
I'm not too sure what goes on in ser-base.c, all I know is that it's
what is used when debugging remotely. I've just named the main handler
"serial". It would be good to have unique names there too. For instance
when debugging with two different remote connections, we'd ideally want
the handlers to have unique names. I didn't do it in this patch though.

gdb: Allow more control over where to find python libraries
Added a new configuration option --with-python-libdir, but failed to
add this option to the output of 'gdb --configuration'. This commit
fixes this mistake.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* top.c (print_gdb_configuration): Print --with-python-libdir
configuration value.

Currently, a user can define an alias, but cannot have default
arguments for this alias.
This patch modifies the 'alias' command so that default args can
be provided.
(gdb) h alias
Define a new command that is an alias of an existing command.
Usage: alias [-a] [--] ALIAS = COMMAND [DEFAULT-ARGS...]
ALIAS is the name of the alias command to create.
COMMAND is the command being aliased to.
Options:
-a
Specify that ALIAS is an abbreviation of COMMAND.
Abbreviations are not used in command completion..
GDB will automatically prepend the provided DEFAULT-ARGS to the list
of arguments explicitly provided when using ALIAS.
Use "help aliases" to list all user defined aliases and their default args.
Examples:
Make "spe" an alias of "set print elements":
alias spe set print elements
Make "elms" an alias of "elements" in the "set print" command:
alias -a set print elms set print elements
Make "btf" an alias of "backtrace -full -past-entry -past-main" :
alias btf = backtrace -full -past-entry -past-main
Make "wLapPeu" an alias of 2 nested "with":
alias wLapPeu = with language pascal -- with print elements unlimited --
(gdb)
The way 'default-args' is implemented makes it trivial to set default
args also for GDB commands (such as "backtrace") and for GDB pre-defined
aliases (such as "bt"). It was however deemed better to not allow to
define default arguments for pre-defined commands and aliases, to avoid
users believing that e.g. default args for "backtrace" would apply to "bt".
If needed, default-args could be allowed for GDB predefined commands
and aliases by adding a command
'set default-args GDB_COMMAND_OR_PREDEFINED_ALIAS [DEFAULT-ARGS...]'.
* 'alias' command now has a completer that helps to complete:
- ALIAS (if the user defines an alias after a prefix),
- the aliased COMMAND
- the possible options for the aliased COMMAND.
* Help and apropos commands show the definitions of the aliases
that have default arguments, e.g.
(gdb) help backtrace
backtrace, btf, where, bt
alias btf = backtrace -full -past-entry -past-main
Print backtrace of all stack frames, or innermost COUNT frames.
Usage: backtrace [OPTION]... [QUALIFIER]... [COUNT | -COUNT]
Options:
-entry-values no|only|preferred|if-needed|both|compact|default
Set printing of function arguments at function entry.

Currently there are many prefix commands that do nothing but call
either help_list or cmd_show_list. I happened to notice that one such
call, for "set print type", used the wrong command list parameter,
causing incorrect output.
Rather than fix this bug in isolation, I decided to eliminate this
possibility by adding two new ways to add prefix commands, which
simply route the call to help_list or cmd_show_list, as appropriate.
This makes it impossible for a mismatch to occur.
In some cases, a bit of output was removed; however, I don't think
this output in general was very useful. It seemed redundant with
what's already printed by help_list. A representative example is this
hunk, removed from ada-lang.c:
- printf_unfiltered (_(\
-"\"set ada\" must be followed by the name of a setting.\n"));
This simplified the CLI style set/show commands quite a bit, and
allowed the deletion of a macro.
This also cleans up some unusual code in windows-tdep.c.
Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30. Note that I have no way to build the
go32-nat.c change.

This commit aims to give a cleaner mechanism by which the user can
prevent GDB from trying to load any previous command history.
Currently the user can change the path to the history file, either
using a command line flag, or by setting the GDBHISTFILE environment
variable, and if the path is set to a non-existent file, then
obviously GDB wont load any command history. However, this feels like
a bit of a bodge, I'd like to add an official mechanism by which we
can disable command history loading.
Why would we want to prevent command history loading? The specific
use case I have is GDB starting with a CWD that is a network mounted
directory, and there is no command history present. Still GDB will
access the network in order to check for the file. In my particular
use case I'm actually starting a large number of GDB instances in
parallel, all in the same network mounted directory, the large number
of network accesses looking for this file introduces a noticeable
delay at GDB startup.
The approach I'm proposing here is a slight adjustment to the current
rules for setting up the history filename. Currently, if a user does
this, they see an error:
(gdb) set history filename
Argument required (filename to set it to.).
However, if a user does this:
$ GDBHISTFILE= gdb --quiet
(gdb) set history save on
(gdb) q
warning: Could not rename -gdb18416~ to : No such file or directory
So, we already have a bug in this area. My plan is to allow the empty
filename to be accepted, and for this to mean, neither load, nor save
the command history.
This does mean that we now have two mechanisms to prevent saving the
command history:
(gdb) set history filename
or
(gdb) set history save off
But the only way to prevent loading the command history is to set the
filename to the empty string _before_ you get to a GDB prompt, either
using a command line option, or the environment variable.
I've updated some of the show commands, for example this session:
(gdb) set history filename
(gdb) show history filename
There is no filename currently set for recording the command history in.
(gdb) show history save
Saving of the history record on exit is off.
(gdb) set history save on
(gdb) show history save
Saving of the history is disabled due to the value of 'history filename'.
(gdb) set history filename /tmp/hist
(gdb) show history save
Saving of the history record on exit is on.
I've updated the manual, and added some tests.

debuginfod is a lightweight web service that indexes ELF/DWARF debugging
resources by build-id and serves them over HTTP.
This patch enables GDB to query debuginfod servers for separate debug
files and source code when it is otherwise not able to find them.
GDB can be built with debuginfod using the --with-debuginfod configure
option.
This requires that libdebuginfod be installed and found at configure time.
debuginfod is packaged with elfutils, starting with version 0.178.
For more information see https://sourceware.org/elfutils/.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 31.

This commit adds multi-target support to GDB. What this means is that
with this commit, GDB can now be connected to different targets at the
same time. E.g., you can debug a live native process and a core dump
at the same time, connect to multiple gdbservers, etc.
Actually, the word "target" is overloaded in gdb. We already have a
target stack, with pushes several target_ops instances on top of one
another. We also have "info target" already, which means something
completely different to what this patch does.
So from here on, I'll be using the "target connections" term, to mean
an open process_stratum target, pushed on a target stack. This patch
makes gdb have multiple target stacks, and multiple process_stratum
targets open simultaneously. The user-visible changes / commands will
also use this terminology, but of course it's all open to debate.
User-interface-wise, not that much changes. The main difference is
that each inferior may have its own target connection.
A target connection (e.g., a target extended-remote connection) may
support debugging multiple processes, just as before.
Say you're debugging against gdbserver in extended-remote mode, and
you do "add-inferior" to prepare to spawn a new process, like:
(gdb) target extended-remote :9999
...
(gdb) start
...
(gdb) add-inferior
Added inferior 2
(gdb) inferior 2
[Switching to inferior 2 [<null>] (<noexec>)]
(gdb) file a.out
...
(gdb) start
...
At this point, you have two inferiors connected to the same gdbserver.
With this commit, GDB will maintain a target stack per inferior,
instead of a global target stack.
To preserve the behavior above, by default, "add-inferior" makes the
new inferior inherit a copy of the target stack of the current
inferior. Same across a fork - the child inherits a copy of the
target stack of the parent. While the target stacks are copied, the
targets themselves are not. Instead, target_ops is made a
refcounted_object, which means that target_ops instances are
refcounted, which each inferior counting for a reference.
What if you want to create an inferior and connect it to some _other_
target? For that, this commit introduces a new "add-inferior
-no-connection" option that makes the new inferior not share the
current inferior's target. So you could do:
(gdb) target extended-remote :9999
Remote debugging using :9999
...
(gdb) add-inferior -no-connection
[New inferior 2]
Added inferior 2
(gdb) inferior 2
[Switching to inferior 2 [<null>] (<noexec>)]
(gdb) info inferiors
Num Description Executable
1 process 18401 target:/home/pedro/tmp/main
* 2 <null>
(gdb) tar extended-remote :10000
Remote debugging using :10000
...
(gdb) info inferiors
Num Description Executable
1 process 18401 target:/home/pedro/tmp/main
* 2 process 18450 target:/home/pedro/tmp/main
(gdb)
A following patch will extended "info inferiors" to include a column
indicating which connection an inferior is bound to, along with a
couple other UI tweaks.
Other than that, debugging is the same as before. Users interact with
inferiors and threads as before. The only difference is that
inferiors may be bound to processes running in different machines.
That's pretty much all there is to it in terms of noticeable UI
changes.
On to implementation.
Since we can be connected to different systems at the same time, a
ptid_t is no longer a unique identifier. Instead a thread can be
identified by a pair of ptid_t and 'process_stratum_target *', the
later being the instance of the process_stratum target that owns the
process/thread. Note that process_stratum_target inherits from
target_ops, and all process_stratum targets inherit from
process_stratum_target. In earlier patches, many places in gdb were
converted to refer to threads by thread_info pointer instead of
ptid_t, but there are still places in gdb where we start with a
pid/tid and need to find the corresponding inferior or thread_info
objects. So you'll see in the patch many places adding a
process_stratum_target parameter to functions that used to take only a
ptid_t.
Since each inferior has its own target stack now, we can always find
the process_stratum target for an inferior. That is done via a
inf->process_target() convenience method.
Since each inferior has its own target stack, we need to handle the
"beneath" calls when servicing target calls. The solution I settled
with is just to make sure to switch the current inferior to the
inferior you want before making a target call. Not relying on global
context is just not feasible in current GDB. Fortunately, there
aren't that many places that need to do that, because generally most
code that calls target methods already has the current context
pointing to the right inferior/thread. Note, to emphasize -- there's
no method to "switch to this target stack". Instead, you switch the
current inferior, and that implicitly switches the target stack.
In some spots, we need to iterate over all inferiors so that we reach
all target stacks.
Native targets are still singletons. There's always only a single
instance of such targets.
Remote targets however, we'll have one instance per remote connection.
The exec target is still a singleton. There's only one instance. I
did not see the point of instanciating more than one exec_target
object.
After vfork, we need to make sure to push the exec target on the new
inferior. See exec_on_vfork.
For type safety, functions that need a {target, ptid} pair to identify
a thread, take a process_stratum_target pointer for target parameter
instead of target_ops *. Some shared code in gdb/nat/ also need to
gain a target pointer parameter. This poses an issue, since gdbserver
doesn't have process_stratum_target, only target_ops. To fix this,
this commit renames gdbserver's target_ops to process_stratum_target.
I think this makes sense. There's no concept of target stack in
gdbserver, and gdbserver's target_ops really implements a
process_stratum-like target.
The thread and inferior iterator functions also gain
process_stratum_target parameters. These are used to be able to
iterate over threads and inferiors of a given target. Following usual
conventions, if the target pointer is null, then we iterate over
threads and inferiors of all targets.
I tried converting "add-inferior" to the gdb::option framework, as a
preparatory patch, but that stumbled on the fact that gdb::option does
not support file options yet, for "add-inferior -exec". I have a WIP
patchset that adds that, but it's not a trivial patch, mainly due to
need to integrate readline's filename completion, so I deferred that
to some other time.
In infrun.c/infcmd.c, the main change is that we need to poll events
out of all targets. See do_target_wait. Right after collecting an
event, we switch the current inferior to an inferior bound to the
target that reported the event, so that target methods can be used
while handling the event. This makes most of the code transparent to
multi-targets. See fetch_inferior_event.
infrun.c:stop_all_threads is interesting -- in this function we need
to stop all threads of all targets. What the function does is send an
asynchronous stop request to all threads, and then synchronously waits
for events, with target_wait, rinse repeat, until all it finds are
stopped threads. Now that we have multiple targets, it's not
efficient to synchronously block in target_wait waiting for events out
of one target. Instead, we implement a mini event loop, with
interruptible_select, select'ing on one file descriptor per target.
For this to work, we need to be able to ask the target for a waitable
file descriptor. Such file descriptors already exist, they are the
descriptors registered in the main event loop with add_file_handler,
inside the target_async implementations. This commit adds a new
target_async_wait_fd target method that just returns the file
descriptor in question. See wait_one / stop_all_threads in infrun.c.
The 'threads_executing' global is made a per-target variable. Since
it is only relevant to process_stratum_target targets, this is where
it is put, instead of in target_ops.
You'll notice that remote.c includes some FIXME notes. These refer to
the fact that the global arrays that hold data for the remote packets
supported are still globals. For example, if we connect to two
different servers/stubs, then each might support different remote
protocol features. They might even be different architectures, like
e.g., one ARM baremetal stub, and a x86 gdbserver, to debug a
host/controller scenario as a single program. That isn't going to
work correctly today, because of said globals. I'm leaving fixing
that for another pass, since it does not appear to be trivial, and I'd
rather land the base work first. It's already useful to be able to
debug multiple instances of the same server (e.g., a distributed
cluster, where you have full control over the servers installed), so I
think as is it's already reasonable incremental progress.
Current limitations:
- You can only resume more that one target at the same time if all
targets support asynchronous debugging, and support non-stop mode.
It should be possible to support mixed all-stop + non-stop
backends, but that is left for another time. This means that
currently in order to do multi-target with gdbserver you need to
issue "maint set target-non-stop on". I would like to make that
mode be the default, but we're not there yet. Note that I'm
talking about how the target backend works, only. User-visible
all-stop mode works just fine.
- As explained above, connecting to different remote servers at the
same time is likely to produce bad results if they don't support the
exact set of RSP features.

While handling the comments of Tom related to
[RFC] Have an option to tell GDB to detect and possibly handle mismatched exec-files.
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-12/msg00621.html
I saw that GDB warnings are produced ignoring the given styles.
This patch:
* ensures that style markups are properly handled by "warning".
* changes 'set/show data-directory' so that file style is used
in warnings and in 'show message'
* changes all other messages in top.c to use file style when appropriate.
* Uses the above data-directory changes in gdb.base/style.exp
2020-01-03 Philippe Waroquiers <philippe.waroquiers@skynet.be>
* ui-file.c (stdio_file::can_emit_style_escape)
(tee_file::can_emit_style_escape): Ensure style is used also on
gdb_stderr when gdb_stderr is a tty supporting styling, similarly
to gdb_stdout.
* main.c (set_gdb_data_directory): Use file style to output the
warning that the given pathname is not a directory.
* top.c (show_history_filename, gdb_safe_append_history)
(show_gdb_datadir): Use file style.
2020-01-03 Philippe Waroquiers <philippe.waroquiers@skynet.be>
* gdb.base/style.exp: Test that warnings are styled.

This looks like a legitimate warning, the fprintf_filtered is too much
indented. Fix it, and at the same time add a bit of whitespace to make
this function easier to read.

Ref.: https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=23613
Hi,
This bug has been reported against Fedora GDB, but there's also an
upstream bug. The problem reported is that GDB segfaults when the
working directory is deleted. It's pretty use to reproduce it:
mkdir bla
cd bla
rmdir ../bla
gdb echo
Debugging the problem is a bit tricky, because, since the current
directory doesn't exist anymore, a corefile cannot be saved there.
After a few attempts, I came up with the following:
gdb -ex 'shell mkdir bla' -ex 'cd bla' -ex 'shell rmdir ../bla' -ex 'r echo' ./gdb/gdb
This assumes that you're inside a build directory which contains
./gdb/gdb, of course.
After investigating it, I found that the problem happens at
gdb_abspath, where we're dereferencing 'current_directory' without
checking if it's NULL:
...
(concat (current_directory,
IS_DIR_SEPARATOR (current_directory[strlen (current_directory) - 1])
? "" : SLASH_STRING,
...
So I fixed the problem with the patch below. The idea is that, if
'current_directory' is NULL, then the final string returned should be
just the "path".
After fixing the bug, I found a similar one reported against our
bugzilla: PR gdb/23613. The problem is the same, but the reproducer
is a bit different.
I really tried writing a testcase for this, but unfortunately it's
apparently not possible to start GDB inside a non-existent directory
with DejaGNU.
I regression tested this patch on the BuildBot, and no regressions
were found.

This patch adds the new 'define-prefix' command that creates (or mark an
existing user defined command) as a prefix command.
This approach was preferred compared to add a -prefix option to
'define' command : with define-prefix, a command can be defined and
afterwards marked as a prefix. Also, it is easier to define a
'prefix' only command in one operation.
This patch also adds completers for the 'define' and 'document' commands.
This makes it easier for the user to type the prefixes for 'define'
and type the documented command name for 'document'.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-11-30 Philippe Waroquiers <philippe.waroquiers@skynet.be>
* cli/cli-script.c (do_define_command): Ensure a redefined
prefix command is kept as a prefix command.
(define_prefix_command): New function.
(show_user_1): Report user defined prefixes.
(_initialize_cli_script): Create the new 'define-prefix' command.
Add completers for 'define' and 'document'.
* top.c (execute_command): If command is a user-defined prefix only
command, report the list of commands for this prefix command.

I think it would be clearer to not use gen_ret_current_ui_field_ptr to
generate the implementation of current_ui_gdb_stdout_ptr et al. It
doesn't save much code, but adds a layer of complexity for the reader.
Plus, it doesn't work well with IDEs, for example if you ask to find all
usages the m_gdb_stdout field.

This changes command_line_input to return a "const char *", which is
appropriate because the memory is owned by command_line_input. Then
it fixes up the users.
I looked at making command_line_input transfer ownership to its caller
instead, but this is complicated due to the way read_next_line is
called, so I decided against it.
Tested by rebuilding.

Adds a configure option --with-system-gdbinit-dir to specify a directory
in which to look for gdbinit files. All files in this directory are
loaded on startup (subject to -n/-nx as usual) as long as the extension
matches a known and enabled scripting language (.gdb/.py/.scm).
This also changes get_ext_lang_of_file to support ".gdb" files, similar
to get_ext_lang_defn's handling of EXT_LANG_GDB.

With this patch, the help docs now respect 2 invariants:
* The first line of a command help is terminated by a '.' character.
* The last character of a command help is not a newline character.
Note that the changes for the last invariant were done by Tom, as part of :
[PATCH] Remove trailing newlines from help text
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-06/msg00050.html
but some occurrences have been re-introduced since then.
Some help docs had to be rephrased/restructured to respect the above
invariants.
Before this patch, print_doc_line was printing the first line
of a command help documentation, but stopping at the first '.'
or ',' character.
This was giving inconsistent results :
* The first line of command helps was sometimes '.' terminated,
sometimes not.
* The first line of command helps was not always designed to be
readable/understandable/unambiguous when stopping at the first
'.' or ',' character.
This e.g. created the following inconsistencies/problems:
< catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions
< catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions
< catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names
< down-silently -- Same as the `down' command
while the new help is:
> catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions, when raised.
> catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions, when handled.
> catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names, groups and/or numbers.
> down-silently -- Same as the `down' command, but does not print anything.
Also, the command help doc should not be terminated by a newline
character, but this was not respected by all commands.
The cli-option -OPT framework re-introduced some occurences.
So, the -OPT build help framework was changed to not output newlines at the
end of %OPTIONS% replacement.
This patch changes the help documentations to ensure the 2 invariants
given above.
It implied to slightly rephrase or restructure some help docs.
Based on the above invariants, print_doc_line (called by
'apropos' and 'help' commands to print the first line of a command
help) now outputs the full first line of a command help.
This all results in a lot of small changes in the produced help docs.
There are less code changes than changes in the help docs, as a lot
of docs are produced by some code (e.g. the remote packet usage settings).

This patch drops gdb's configury support for glibc's mcheck function.
It has been observed to cause false abort()s, because it is
thread-unsafe yet interposes every malloc/free operation. So if any
library transitively used by gdb also uses threads, then these
functions can easily corrupt their own checking data. These days, gcc
ASAN and valgrind provide high quality checking, and mcheck is
apparently itself being slowly deprecated.
So, let's stop linking to it. Attached patch drops the
autoconf/Makefile machinery for both gdb and gdbserver. No
testsuite-visible impact. IMHO not worth mentioning in NEWS.

On Windows, passing a named pipe as terminal argument to the new-ui
command does not work.
The problem is that the new_ui_command function in top.c opens the
same tty three times, for stdin, stdout and stderr. With Windows
named pipes, the second and third calls to open fail.
Opening the file only once and passing the same stream for stdin,
stdout and stderr makes it work.
Pedro says:
I tried it on GNU/Linux and things still work.
I ran all the MI tests with forced new-ui, with:
$ make check TESTS="gdb.mi/*.exp" RUNTESTFLAGS="FORCE_MI_SEPARATE_UI=1"
and saw no regressions.

I noticed that init_cli_cmds only installs a command, and so doesn't
need to be handled specially. This patch merges it into
_initialize_cli_cmds.
The help text is constructed dynamically, which is sometimes an
indication that special treatment is needed; but in this case it is
just to insert the value of "gdbinit", which is created at
compile-time and not modified; so this doesn't affect the result.
This version also removes the "gdbinit" global. There's no need for
it, as GDBINIT can be used instead. Note, though, that the help text
in question must still be dynamically constructed, in order to be
i18n-friendly.

I touched symtab.h and was surprised to see how many files were
rebuilt. I looked into it a bit, and found that defs.h includes
gdbarch.h, which in turn includes many things.
gdbarch.h is only needed by a minority ofthe files in gdb, so this
patch removes the include from defs.h and updates the fallout.
I did "wc -l" on the files in build/gdb/.deps; this patch reduces the
line count from 139935 to 137030; so there are definitely future
build-time savings here.
Note that while I configured with --enable-targets=all, it's possible
that some *-nat.c file needs an update. I could not test all of
these. The buildbot caught a few problems along these lines.

This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.
This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.
I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.
Tested by the buildbot.

(gdb) help with
Temporarily set SETTING to VALUE, run COMMAND, and restore SETTING.
Usage: with SETTING [VALUE] [-- COMMAND]
Usage: w SETTING [VALUE] [-- COMMAND]
With no COMMAND, repeats the last executed command.
SETTING is any setting you can change with the "set" subcommands.
E.g.:
with language pascal -- print obj
with print elements unlimited -- print obj
As can be seen above, the "with" command is just like "set", but
instead of setting the setting permanently, it sets the setting, runs
a command and then restores the setting.
(gdb) p g_s
$1 = {a = 1, b = 2, c = 3}
(gdb) with language ada -- print g_s
$2 = (a => 1, b => 2, c => 3)
Warning: the current language does not match this frame.
(gdb) show language
The current source language is "auto; currently c".
(gdb) with print elements 100 -- with print object on -- print 1
$3 = 1
You can shorten things a bit though, as long as unambiguous. So this:
(gdb) with print elements 100 -- with print object off -- print 1
is the same as:
(gdb) w p el 100 -- w p o 0 -- p 1
Note that the patch adds a "w" alias for "with", as "w" is not
currently taken:
(gdb) w
Ambiguous command "w": watch, wh, whatis, where, while, while-stepping, winheight, ws.
Let me know if you'd prefer to reserve "w" for one of the other
commands above. IMHO, this command will end up being used frequently
enough that it deserves the "w" shorthand.
A nice feature is that this is fully integrated with TAB-completion:
(gdb) with p[TAB]
pagination print prompt python
(gdb) with print [TAB]
address max-depth static-members
array max-symbolic-offset symbol
array-indexes null-stop symbol-filename
asm-demangle object symbol-loading
demangle pascal_static-members thread-events
elements pretty type
entry-values raw union
frame-arguments repeats vtbl
inferior-events sevenbit-strings
(gdb) with print [TAB]
(gdb) with print elements unlimited -- thread apply all -[TAB]
-ascending -c -q -s
(gdb) with print elements unlimited -- print -[TAB]
-address -max-depth -repeats -vtbl
-array -null-stop -static-members
-array-indexes -object -symbol
-elements -pretty -union
The main advantage of this new command compared to command options,
like the new "print -OPT", is that this command works with any
setting, and, it works nicely when you want to override a setting
while running a user-defined command, like:
(gdb) with print pretty -- usercmd
The disadvantage is that it isn't as compact or easy to type. I think
of command options and this command as complementary. I think that
even with this new command, it makes sense to continue developing the
command options in the direction of exposing most-oft-used settings as
command options.
Inspired by Philippe's "/" command proposal, if no command is
specified, then the last command is re-invoked, under the overridden
setting:
(gdb) p g_s
$1 = {a = 1, b = 2, c = 3}
(gdb) with language ada
$2 = (a => 1, b => 2, c => 3)
Warning: the current language does not match this frame.
Note: "with" requires "--" to separate the setting from the command.
It might be possible to do without that, but, I haven't tried it yet,
and I think that this can go in without it. We can always downgrade
to making "--" optional if we manage to make it work.
On to the patch itself, the implementation of the command is simpler
than one might expect. A few details:
- I factored out a bit from pipe_command into repeat_previous
directly, because otherwise I'd need to copy&paste the same code and
same error message in the with command.
- The parse_cli_var_uinteger / parse_cli_var_zuinteger_unlimited /
do_set_command changes are necessary since we can now pass an empty
string as argument.
- do_show_command was split in two, as a FIXME comment suggests, but
for a different reason: we need to get a string version of a "set"
command's value, and we already had code for that in
do_show_command. That code is now factored out to the new
get_setshow_command_value_string function.
- There's a new "maint with" command added too:
(gdb) help maint with
Like "with", but works with "maintenance set" variables.
Usage: maintenance with SETTING [VALUE] [-- COMMAND]
With no COMMAND, repeats the last executed command.
SETTING is any setting you can change with the "maintenance set"
subcommands.
"with" and "maint with" share 99% of the implementation.
This might be useful on its own, but it's also useful for testing,
since with this, we can use the "maint set/show test-settings"
settings for exercising the "with" machinery with all the command
type variants (all enum var_types). This is done in the new
gdb/base/with.exp testcase.
The documentation bits are originally based on Philippe's docs for the
"/" command, hence the attribution in the ChangeLog.

The deprecated_interactive_hook is not used within GDB. It is used in
gdbtk, however this patch removes that use:
https://sourceware.org/ml/insight/2019-q2/msg00001.html
So I think there is no longer a reason to keep this hook around.
This patch removes it. There should be no user visible changes after
this commit.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* defs.h (deprecated_interactive_hook): Delete declaration.
* interps.c (clear_interpreter_hooks): Remove use of
deprecated_interactive_hook.
* top.c (deprecated_interactive_hook): Delete definition.
* utils.c (maybe_quit): Remove use of deprecated_interactive_hook.

PR gdb/24653 points out that a gcc snapshot will complain about the
calls to alloca(0) in gdb.
These calls are only needed when using the C alloca. I'm inclined to
think that no current platform needs this, so this patch removes the
calls.
Let me know what you think.

I noticed recently that some command had a trailing newline in its
"help" output. So, I temporarily hacked cli-decode.c to print
something when a new command was installed that had a trailing newline
in its help message, and wrote this patch, which removes all the ones
I could find this way. (There could still be a few more in *-nat
files.)
Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29.
