Use "set always-read-ctf on" instead of --strip-debug in the ctf test-cases.
Tested on x86_64-linux.

This changes skip_ctf_tests to invert the sense, and renames it to
allow_ctf_tests.

This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script,
which automated the update of the copyright year range for all
source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include
year 2023.

The canonical form of 'if' in modern TCL is 'if {} {}'. But there's
still a bunch of places in the testsuite where we make use of the
'then' keyword, and sometimes these get copies into new tests, which
just spreads poor practice.
This commit removes all use of the 'then' keyword from the gdb.base/
test script directory.
There should be no changes in what is tested after this commit.

When running test-case gdb.base/ctf-constvars.exp on openSUSE Tumbleweed (with
system gcc version 12, providing gcc -gctf support, enabling the ctf test-cases
in the gdb testsuite), I run into:
...
(gdb) print vox^M
'vox' has unknown type; cast it to its declared type^M
(gdb) FAIL: gdb.base/ctf-constvars.exp: print vox
...
There are two causes for this:
- the linker flags are missing --ctf-variables, so the information for variable
vox is missing (reported in PR29468), and
- the executable contains some dwarf2 due to some linked-in glibc objects,
so the ctf info is ignored (reported in PR29160).
By using:
- -Wl,--ctf-variable,
- -Wl,--strip-debug, and
we can make the test-case and some similar test-cases pass.
Tested on x86_64-linux.

With test-cases gdb.base/cvexpr.exp and gdb.base/whatis.exp I run into:
...
gdb compile failed, gcc: error: unrecognized debug output level 't'
...
This is due to using additional_flags=-gt.
Commit ffb3f587933 ("CTF: multi-CU and archive support") replaced
additional_flags=-gt with additional_flags=-gctf in gdb.ctf/*.exp and
gdb.base/ctf-*.exp.
Do the same in these two test-cases.
Tested on x86_64-linux.

After this commit the gcc_compiled global is no longer exported from
lib/gdb.exp. In theory we could switch over all uses of gcc_compiled
to instead call test_compiler_info directly, however, I have instead
added a new proc to gdb.exp: 'is_c_compiler_gcc'. I've then updated
the testsuite to call this proc instead of using the global.
Having a new proc specifically for this task means that we have a
single consistent pattern for detecting gcc. By wrapping this logic
within a proc that calls test_compiler_info, rather than using the
global, means that test scripts don't need to call get_compiler_info
before they read the global, simply calling the new proc does
everything in one go.
As a result I've been able to remove the get_compiler_info calls from
all the test scripts that I've touched in this commit.
In some of the tests e.g. gdb.dwarf2/*.exp, the $gcc_compiled flag was
being checked at the top of the script to decide if the whole script
should be skipped or not. In these cases I've called the new proc
directly and removed all uses of gcc_compiled.
In other cases, e.g. most of the gdb.base scripts, there were many
uses of gcc_compiled. In these cases I set a new global gcc_compiled
near the top of the script, and leave the rest of the script
unchanged.
There should be no changes in what is tested after this commit.

This commit brings all the changes made by running gdb/copyright.py
as per GDB's Start of New Year Procedure.
For the avoidance of doubt, all changes in this commits were
performed by the script.

Minimize gdb restarts, applying the following rules:
- don't use prepare_for_testing unless necessary
- don't use clean_restart unless necessary
Also, if possible, replace build_for_executable + clean_restart
with prepare_for_testing for brevity.
Touches 68 test-cases.
Tested on x86_64-linux.

gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
|
|
The recently added gdb.base/ctf-whatis.exp test is a slightly modified
version of gdb.base/whatis.exp, with a few tests removed, and the
source compiled with different compiler options. This patch merges
the two tests together into a single test script.
I tested using a version of GCC with CTF support added.
gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:
* gdb.base/ctf-whatis.c: Delete.
* gdb.base/ctf-whatis.exp: Delete.
* gdb.base/whatis.exp: Rewrite to compile as both dwarf and ctf.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

Compiling GDB with a recent GCC exposes a problem:
../../gdb/typeprint.c: In function 'void whatis_exp(const char*, int)':
../../gdb/typeprint.c:515:12: warning: 'val' may be used uninitialized in this function [-Wmaybe-uninitialized]
real_type = value_rtti_type (val, &full, &top, &using_enc);
~~~~~~~~~~^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The warning is correct. There are indeed code paths that use
uninitialized 'val', leading to crashes. Inside the
value_rtti_indirect_type/value_rtti_type calls here in whatis_exp:
if (opts.objectprint)
{
if (((TYPE_CODE (type) == TYPE_CODE_PTR) || TYPE_IS_REFERENCE (type))
&& (TYPE_CODE (TYPE_TARGET_TYPE (type)) == TYPE_CODE_STRUCT))
real_type = value_rtti_indirect_type (val, &full, &top, &using_enc);
else if (TYPE_CODE (type) == TYPE_CODE_STRUCT)
real_type = value_rtti_type (val, &full, &top, &using_enc);
}
We reach those calls above with "set print object on", and then with
any of:
(gdb) whatis struct some_structure_type
(gdb) whatis struct some_structure_type *
(gdb) whatis struct some_structure_type &
because "whatis" with a type argument enters this branch:
/* The behavior of "whatis" depends on whether the user
expression names a type directly, or a language expression
(including variable names). If the former, then "whatis"
strips one level of typedefs, only. If an expression,
"whatis" prints the type of the expression without stripping
any typedef level. "ptype" always strips all levels of
typedefs. */
if (show == -1 && expr->elts[0].opcode == OP_TYPE)
{
which does not initialize VAL. Trying the above triggers crashes like
this:
(gdb) set print object on
(gdb) whatis some_structure_type
Thread 1 "gdb" received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
0x00000000005dda90 in check_typedef (type=0x6120736573756170) at src/gdb/gdbtypes.c:2388
2388 int instance_flags = TYPE_INSTANCE_FLAGS (type);
...
This is a regression caused by a recent-ish refactoring of the code on
'whatis_exp', introduced by:
commit c973d0aa4a2c737ab527ae44a617f1c357e07364
Date: Mon Aug 21 11:34:32 2017 +0100
Fix type casts losing typedefs and reimplement "whatis" typedef stripping
Fix this by setting VAL to NULL in the "whatis TYPE" case, and
skipping fetching the dynamic type if there's no value to fetch it
from.
New tests included.
compilation messages
Changes in v3:
- Adjusted some testcases where the message "failed to compile" was not unique.
Changes in v2:
- Addressed comments from reviewers.
- Fixed spurious whitespaces.
- Changed compilation failure messages that included source/binary paths to
ones that are short and deterministic.
---
Another bit of cleanup to the testsuite. We have a number of tests that are
not honoring the rule of not outputting their own name as a test name.
I fixed up all the offenders i could find with the following regular
expression:
"(xfail|kfail|kpass|fail|pass|unsupported|untested) ([A-Za-z0-9]+|\\\$(.)*testfile(.)*)\.exp$"
Assume that we have a C program like this:
struct foo_type
{
int var;
} foo;
struct foo_type *foo_ptr = &foo;
int
main ()
{
return foo_ptr->var;
}
Then GDB should be able to evaluate the following, however, it currently
does not:
(gdb) start
...
(gdb) whatis &(foo_ptr->var)
Attempt to take address of value not located in memory.
The problem is that in EVAL_AVOID_SIDE_EFFECTS mode,
eval.c:evaluate_subexp_standard always returns a not_lval value as the
result for a STRUCTOP_PTR operation. As a consequence, the rest of
the code believes that one cannot take the address of the returned
value.
This patch fixes STRUCTOP_PTR handling so that the VALUE_LVAL
attribute for the returned value is properly initialized. After this
change, the above session becomes:
(gdb) start
...
(gdb) whatis &(foo_ptr->var)
type = int *
This commit is largely the same as commit 2520f728b710 (Forward
VALUE_LVAL when avoiding side effects for STRUCTOP_STRUCT) but applied
to STRUCTOP_PTR rather than STRUCTOP_STRUCT. Both of these commits are
building on top of commit ac1ca910d74d (Fixes for PR exp/15364).
gdb/ChangeLog:
* eval.c (evaluate_subexp_standard): If EVAL_AVOID_SIDE_EFFECTS
mode, forward the VALUE_LVAL attribute to the returned value in
the STRUCTOP_PTR case.
gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:
* gdb.base/whatis.c: Extend the test case.
* gdb.base/whatis.exp: Add additional tests.
This does most of the mechanical removal. IOW, the easy part.
This doesn't touch procfs.c as that'd be a harder excision,
potentially affecting Solaris.
mips-tdep.c is left alone. E.g., I didn't delete the GDB_OSABI_IRIX
enum value, nor references to it in mips-tdep.c. Some comments
mentioning IRIX ABIs may still be relevant and I wouldn't know what to
do with them. in That can always be done on a separate pass,
preferably by someone who can test on MIPS.
I didn't remove a reference to IRIX in testsuite/lib/future.exp, as I
believe that code is imported from DejaGNU.
