This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script, which automated the update of the copyright year range for all source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include year 2023.
2022-11-28gdb/testsuite: remove use of then keyword from gdb.base/*.expAndrew Burgess1-4/+4
The canonical form of 'if' in modern TCL is 'if {} {}'. But there's still a bunch of places in the testsuite where we make use of the 'then' keyword, and sometimes these get copies into new tests, which just spreads poor practice. This commit removes all use of the 'then' keyword from the gdb.base/ test script directory. There should be no changes in what is tested after this commit.
2022-06-24gdb/testsuite: remove unneeded calls to get_compiler_infoAndrew Burgess1-6/+0
It is not necessary to call get_compiler_info before calling test_compiler_info, and, after recent commits that removed setting up the gcc_compiled, true, and false globals from get_compiler_info, there is now no longer any need for any test script to call get_compiler_info directly. As a result every call to get_compiler_info outside of lib/gdb.exp is redundant, and this commit removes them all. There should be no change in what is tested after this commit.

2021-09-30gdb/testsuite: make runto_main not pass no-message to runtoSimon Marchi1-1/+0
As follow-up to this discussion: https://sourceware.org/pipermail/gdb-patches/2020-August/171385.html ... make runto_main not pass no-message to runto. This means that if we fail to run to main, for some reason, we'll emit a FAIL. This is the behavior we want the majority of (if not all) the time. Without this, we rely on tests logging a failure if runto_main fails, otherwise. They do so in a very inconsisteny mannet, sometimes using "fail", "unsupported" or "untested". The messages also vary widly. This patch removes all these messages as well. Also, remove a few "fail" where we call runto (and not runto_main). by default (without an explicit no-message argument), runto prints a failure already. In two places, gdb.multi/multi-re-run.exp and gdb.python/py-pp-registration.exp, remove "message" passed to runto. This removes a few PASSes that we don't care about (but FAILs will still be printed if we fail to run to where we want to). This aligns their behavior with the rest of the testsuite. This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

We still have that "we walk right off" comment... Recently, the xmalloc above was replaced with a xrealloc, because as can be seen above, that 'buf' variable above was a static local, otherwise we'd be leaking. This commit replaces that and the associated manual buffer growing with a gdb::def_vector<char>. I don't think there's much point in reusing the buffer across command invocations. While doing this, I realized that reverse_search_command is almost identical to forward_search_command. So this commit factors out a common helper function instead of duplicating a lot of code. There are some tests for "forward-search" in gdb.base/list.exp, but since they use the "search" alias, they were a bit harder to find than expected. That's now fixed, both by testing both variants, and by adding some commentary. Currently, with "list LINESPEC1,LINESPEC2", if one of the linespecs is ambiguous, i.e., if it expands to multiple locations, you get this seemingly odd output: (gdb) list foo,bar file: "file0.c", line number: 26 file: "file1.c", line number: 29 Since "foo" above expands to multiple locations, the specified range is indeterminate, and GDB is trying to be helpful by showing you what was ambiguous. It looks confusing to me, though. I think it'd be much more user friendly if GDB actually told you that, like this: (gdb) list foo,bar Specified first line 'foo' is ambiguous: file: "file0.c", line number: 26 file: "file1.c", line number: 29 (gdb) list bar,foo Specified last line 'foo' is ambiguous: file: "file0.c", line number: 26 file: "file1.c", line number: 29 Note, I'm using "first" and "last" in the output because that's what the manual uses: ~~~ list first,last Print lines from first to last. Test names should start with lowercase unless it starts with the name of a technology, architecture, ISA etc. This first patch addresses cases of test names output explicitly via xfail, kfail, kpass, 2015-12-11gdb: Add an error when 'list -' reaches the start of a file.Andrew Burgess1-0/+12
When a a user uses 'list +' to list forward through a source file they eventually reach the end of the source file. Subsequent uses of 'list +' result in an error message like this, that let the user know they are at the end of the source file: Line number XXX out of range; FILENAME has YYY lines. Compare this to the current behaviour of 'list -' which lists backwards through a source file. When the user reaches the beginning of the source file, subsequent uses of 'list -' result in the command silently returning. This can be confusing if the previous uses of 'list -' have scrolled off the users display, the user receives no reminder that the have already seen the start of the file. After this commit a use of 'list -' when the user has already seen the start of a file will receive the following error: Already at the start of FILENAME. gdb/ChangeLog: * cli/cli-cmds.c (list_command): Add an error when trying to use '-' to scan read off the start of the source file. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: * gdb.base/list.exp (test_list_forward): Add end of file error test. There is an inconsistency with the handling of the special +/- arguments to the list command. For the very first time that list is used (after the inferior has changed locations) then only the first character of the argument string is checked, so 'list +BLAH' will operate as 'list +' and 'list -----FOO' will operate as 'list -'. This compares to each subsequent use of list, where the whole argument string is checked, so 'list +BLAH' will try to list lines of code around the function '+BLAH'. This commit unifies the behaviour so that the whole argument string is checked, in order to list the next 10, or previous 10 lines from a file only 'list +' and 'list -' are now valid. gdb/ChangeLog: * cli/cli-cmds.c (list_command): Check that the argument string is a single character, either '+' or '-'. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: * gdb.base/list.exp (test_list_invalid_args): New function, defined, and called.

This happens because print_stack_frame, called from both normal_stop and mi_on_normal_stop, is the function responsible for setting the current sal from the selected frame, overrides the PRINT_WHAT argument, and only after that does it decide whether to center the current sal line or not, based on the overridden value, and it will always decide false. (The print_stack_frame call in mi_on_normal_stop is a little different from the call in normal_stop, in that it is an unconditional SRC_AND_LOC call. A future patch will make those uniform.) A previous version of this patch made MI uniform with CLI here, by making print_stack_frame also center when MI is active. That changed the output of a "list" command in mi-cli.exp, to expect line 57 instead of 62, as per the example above. However, looking deeper, that list in question is the first "list" after the program stops, and right after the stop, before the "list", the test did "set listsize 1". Let's try the same thing with the CLI: (gdb) start 62 callee1 (2, "A string argument.", 3.5); (gdb) set listsize 1 (gdb) list 57 { Huh, that's unexpected. Why the 57? It's because print_stack_frame, called in reaction to the breakpoint stop, expecting the next "list" to show 10 lines (the listsize at the time) around line 62, sets the lines listed range to 57-67 (62 +/- 5). If the user changes the listsize before "list", why would we still show that range? Looks bogus to me. So the fix for this whole issue should be delay trying to center the listing to until actually listing, so that the correct listsize can be taken into account. This makes MI and CLI uniform too, as it deletes the center code from print_stack_frame. A series of tests are added to list.exp to cover this. mi-cli.exp was after all correct all along, but it now gains an additional test that lists lines with listsize 10, to ensure the centering is consistent with CLI's. One related Python test changed related output -- it's a test that prints the line number after stopping for a breakpoint, similar to the new list.exp tests. Previously we'd print the stop line minus 5 (due to the premature centering), now we print the stop line. I think that's a good change. A few months ago semicolons after "return" were removed throughout the testsuite. However, as I pointed out in review, they're unnecessary not just after "return", but pretty much after any tcl command. ';' is the command separator, and you only need it if there's another command on the same line afterwards. This patch was written by running: $ find . -name "*.exp" | xargs grep -l ";\s*$" | xargs sed -i 's/\([^#][^\s*;]*\)\s*;\s*$/\1/' and then undoing changes to comments, and lib/future.exp. Internally, var_integer maps 0 to INT_MAX case var_integer: { ... if (val == 0 && c->var_type == var_integer) val = INT_MAX; The change in that patch to zuinteger_unlimited command, meant that -1 is left as -1 in the command's control variable (lines_to_list), and the code in source.c isn't expecting that -- it only expects positive numbers. I previously suggested fixing the code and keeping the new behavior, but I found that "set listsize 0" is currently used in the wild, and we do have a bunch of other commands where "0" means unlimited, so I'm thinking that changing this command alone in isolation is not a good idea. So I now strongly prefer reverting back the behavior in 7.6 to the same behavior the command has had since 2006 (0==unlimited, -1=error). Before that, set listsize -1 would be accepted as unlimited as well. After 7.6 is out, in mainline, we can get back to reconsidering changing this command's behavior, if there's a real need for being able to suppress output. For now, let's play it safe. The "list line 1 with unlimited listsize" test in list.exp was originally written years and years ago expecting 0 to mean "no output", but GDB never actually worked that way, even when the tests were written, so the tests had been xfailed then.
