Commit 59a561480d5 ("Fix spurious FAILs with examine-backward.exp") describes
the problem that:

The test case examine-backward.exp issues the command "x/-s" after the end
of the first string in TestStrings, but without making sure that this
string is preceded by a string terminator. Thus GDB may spuriously print
some random characters from before that string, and then the test fails.

The commit fixes the problem by adding a Barrier variable before the TestStrings
variable:

There is however no guarantee that Barrier is placed immediately before
TestStrings.
Before recent commit 169fe7ab54b ("Change gdb.base/examine-backwards.exp for
AIX.") on x86_64-linux, I see:

So while the Barrier variable is the first before the TestStrings variable,
it's not immediately preceding TestStrings.
After commit 169fe7ab54b:

Fix this reliably by adding the zero in the array itself:

This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script,
which automated the update of the copyright year range for all
source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include
year 2023.

This commit brings all the changes made by running gdb/copyright.py
as per GDB's Start of New Year Procedure.
For the avoidance of doubt, all changes in this commits were
performed by the script.

... make runto_main not pass no-message to runto. This means that if we
fail to run to main, for some reason, we'll emit a FAIL. This is the
behavior we want the majority of (if not all) the time.
Without this, we rely on tests logging a failure if runto_main fails,
otherwise. They do so in a very inconsisteny mannet, sometimes using
"fail", "unsupported" or "untested". The messages also vary widly.
This patch removes all these messages as well.
Also, remove a few "fail" where we call runto (and not runto_main). by
default (without an explicit no-message argument), runto prints a
failure already. In two places, gdb.multi/multi-re-run.exp and
gdb.python/py-pp-registration.exp, remove "message" passed to runto.
This removes a few PASSes that we don't care about (but FAILs will still
be printed if we fail to run to where we want to). This aligns their
behavior with the rest of the testsuite.

Adjust gdb.base/examine-backward.exp to let the testcase build and run
as a C++ program, built with either G++ or Clang++.
The change to use unsigned char instead of plain char is to avoid
narrowing warnings:

This patch fixes a paste-o that was introduced in commit
c8ad9b9a31aa3e6039567fc1f152dd454c946d5f. Previously the regexp for
the "examine 3 bytes backward from ${address_zero}" test correctly
matched 3 "${byte}" patterns, but in that commit the 6-byte regexp
from the previous test was mistakenly repeated here instead.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

In the gdb.base/examine-backward.exp test script, we check to see if
address zero is readable, and then read memory first forward from
address zero, and then backward from address zero.
The problem is, being able to read address zero does not guarantee
that you'll be able to read from the other end of the address space,
and the test probably shouldn't assume that is the case.
This patch updates the test script so that even if address zero is
known non-readable, we still run the tests, the tests in question are
mostly about, can GDB calculate the correct address to read from, we
can confirm this even if the final read ultimately fails. We also no
longer assume that if address zero is readable, then the other end of
the address space will be readable.
One further change is that, when we examined the memory at address
zero, the regexp used to match the address expected that the zero
address would have two '0' digits as the least significant digits. As
GDB strips leading zeros from addresses this was causing the test to
fail. I've reduced the zero address to a single 0 digit.

The following patch is based on the previous patch i sent and handles cases of
test names that start with an uppercase letter. Test names should start with
lowercase unless it starts with the name of a technology, architecture, ISA
etc.
This first patch addresses cases of test names output explicitly via xfail,
kfail, kpass, fail, pass, unsupported, untested and also names set with the
pattern "set test" and "set testname".

This change adds support for specifying a negative repeat count to
all the formats of the 'x' command to examine memory backward.
A new testcase 'examine-backward' is added to cover this new feature.
