2019-04-01gdb: Add $_cimag and $_creal internal functionsAndrew Burgess1-0/+2
Add two new internal functions $_cimag and $_creal that extract the imaginary and real parts of a complex value. These internal functions can take a complex value of any type 'float complex', 'double complex', or 'long double complex' and return a suitable floating point value 'float', 'double', or 'long double'. So we can now do this: (gdb) p z1 $1 = 1.5 + 4.5 * I (gdb) p $_cimag (z1) $4 = 4.5 (gdb) p $_creal (z1) $4 = 1.5 The components of a complex value are not strictly named types in DWARF, as the complex type is itself the base type. However, once we are able to extract the components it makes sense to be able to ask what the type of these components is and get a sensible answer back, rather than the error we would currently get. Currently GDB says: (gdb) ptype z1 type = complex double (gdb) p $_cimag (z1) $4 = 4.5 (gdb) ptype $ type = <invalid type code 9> With the changes in dwarf2read.c, GDB now says: (gdb) ptype z1 type = complex double (gdb) p $_cimag (z1) $4 = 4.5 (gdb) ptype $ type = double Which seems to make more sense. gdb/ChangeLog: * NEWS: Mention new internal functions. * dwarf2read.c (dwarf2_init_complex_target_type): New function. 2019-03-12gdb/testsuite: Prepare for DejaGnu 1.6.2Andrew Burgess1-2/+0
Changes in DejaGnu 1.6.2 mean that our testsuite will no longer run. This is because of some confusion over how the gdb.exp file is handled. The gdb.exp file is really the tool init file, which is loaded from within the DejaGnu core, and it should not be loaded directly from any other file in the testsuite. DejaGnu tries to prevent the same library being loaded twice by remembering the names of library files as they are loaded. Until recently loading the tool init file in DejaGnu was very similar to loading a library file, as a result, loading the gdb.exp tool init file simply recorded 'gdb.exp' as having been loaded, future attempts to load 'gdb.exp' as a library would then be ignored (as the file was marked as already loaded). DejaGnu has now changed so that it supports having both a tool init file and a library with the same name, something that was not possible before. What this means however is that when the core loads the 'gdb.exp' tool init file it no longer marks the library 'gdb.exp' as having been loaded. When we then execute 'load_lib gdb.exp' we then try to reload the 'gdb.exp' file. Unfortunately our gdb.exp file can only be loaded once. It use of 'rename cd builtin_cd' means that a second attempt to load this file will fail. This was discussed on the DejaGnu list here: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/dejagnu/2019-03/msg00000.html and the suggested advice is that, unless we have some real requirement to load the tool init file twice, we should remove calls to 'load_lib gdb.exp' and rely on DejaGnu to load the file for us, which is what this patch does. I've tested with native X86-64/GNU Linux and see no regressions. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: * config/default.exp: Remove 'load_lib gdb.exp'. * config/monitor.exp: Likewise. * config/sid.exp: Likewise. * config/sim.exp: Likewise. * config/slite.exp: Likewise. * config/unix.exp: Likewise. * gdb.base/default.exp: Remove unhelpful comment.
2019-01-01Update copyright year range in all GDB files.Joel Brobecker1-1/+1
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
2018-06-05Remove some text from --version outputTom Tromey1-1/+1
I happened to notice recently that "gdb --version" says: GNU gdb (GDB) 8.0.50.20170911-git Copyright (C) 2017 Free Software Foundation, Inc. License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html> This is free software: you are free to change and redistribute it. There is NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law. Type "show copying" and "show warranty" for details. This GDB was configured as "x86_64-pc-linux-gnu". Type "show configuration" for configuration details. For bug reporting instructions, please see: <http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/bugs/>. Find the GDB manual and other documentation resources online at: <http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/documentation/>. For help, type "help". Type "apropos word" to search for commands related to "word". This is a bit on the wordy side, but also references interactive commands, which I think doesn't really make sense for --version. This patch removes some text from --version, while leaving it in the "show version" output. It also adds a newline between the URLs and the "For help, ..." text, because I thought that was easier to read. Finally, it indents one of the URLs, since that was simpler to read, but not the other URL, because the current format is specified by the GNU coding standards section on "--version". Now the --version output looks like: GNU gdb (GDB) 8.1.50.20180511-git Copyright (C) 2018 Free Software Foundation, Inc. License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html> This is free software: you are free to change and redistribute it. There is NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law. 2017-07-20Make language_def O(1)Pedro Alves1-1/+1
Profiling GDB with the rest of series applied, I saw calls to language_def showing up high in some runs. The problem is that language_def is O(N) currently, since walk the languages vector each time to find the matching language_defn. IMO, the add_language mechanism is pointless, because "enum language" implies the core of GDB needs to know about all languages anyway. So simply make the languages vector array be an array where each element's index is the corresponding enum language enumerator. Note that "local_language_defn" is gone along the way. It's just a copy of "auto", so the new code simply maps one to the other. One fewer place to update when we need to change the language vector... Also, a while ago the output of "set language" was made out of order as side effect of some other change. While I was at it, I made them sorted again. gdb/ChangeLog: 2017-07-20 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * ada-lang.c (ada_language_defn): Make extern. 2017-01-01update copyright year range in GDB filesJoel Brobecker1-1/+1
This applies the second part of GDB's End of Year Procedure, which updates the copyright year range in all of GDB's files. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
2016-11-23Makefiles: Flatten and sort file listsSimon Marchi1-1/+1
I find the big file lists in the Makefiles a bit ugly and not very practical. Since there are multiple filenames on each line (as much as fits in 80 columns), it's not easy to add, remove or change a name in the middle. As a result, we have a mix of long and short lines in no particular order (ALL_TARGET_OBS is a good example). I therefore suggest flattening the lists (one name per line) and keeping them in alphabetical order. The diffs will be much clearer and merge conflicts will be easier to resolve. A nice (IMO) side-effect I observed is that the files are compiled alphabetically by make, so it gives a rough idea of the progress of the build. I added a comment in gdb/Makefile.in to mention to keep the file lists ordered, and gave the general guidelines on what order to respect. I added a comment in other Makefiles which refers to gdb/Makefile.in, to avoid duplication. Running the patch through the buildbot found that gdb.base/default.exp started to fail. The languages in the error message shown when typing "set language" have changed order. We could probably improve gdb so that it prints them in a stable order, regardless of the order of the object list passed to the linked, but just fixing the test is easier for now. New in v2: - Change ordering style, directories go at the end. - Cleanup gdbserver's and data-directory's Makefile as well. - Add comments at top of Makefiles about the ordering. - Remove wrong trailing backslahes. - Fix test gdb.base/default.exp. gdb/ChangeLog: * Makefile.in: Add comment about file lists ordering. 2016-10-06Remove Java supportTom Tromey1-1/+1
This patch removes the Java support from gdb. gcj has not seen much development or use for years now, and was recently removed from GCC. This patch changes gdb to follow; in the unlikely event that there are still users using gcj, they can continue to use an older gdb to debug. Or, they can debug in C++ mode. 2014-05-21Rename "target child" to "target native".Pedro Alves1-2/+2
I had been pondering renaming "target child" to something else. "child" is a little lie in case of "attach", and not exactly very clear to users, IMO. By best suggestion is "target native". If I were to explain what "target child" is, I'd just start out with "it's the native target" anyway. I was worrying a little that "native" might be a lie too if some port comes up with a default target that can run but is not really native, but I think that's a very minor issue - we can consider that "native" really means the default built in target that GDB supports, instead of saying that's the target that debugs host native processes, if it turns out necessary. This change doesn't affect users much, because "target child" results in error today: (gdb) target child Use the "run" command to start a child process. Other places "child" is visible: (gdb) help target ... List of target subcommands: target child -- Child process (started by the "run" command) target core -- Use a core file as a target target exec -- Use an executable file as a target ... (gdb) info target Symbols from "/home/pedro/gdb/mygit/build/gdb/gdb". Child process: Using the running image of child Thread 0x7ffff7fc9740 (LWP 4818). While running this, GDB does not access memory from... ... These places will say "native" instead. I think that's a good thing. gdb/ 2014-05-21 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * inf-child.c (inf_child_open): Remove mention of "child". So I'm just removing the test completely. gdb/ 2014-03-13 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * procfs.c (procfs_target): Don't override to_shortname, to_longname or to_doc. gdb/testsuite/ 2014-03-13 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * gdb.base/default.exp: Don't test "target procfs".
2014-03-13Don't mention "Unix" in native target name.Pedro Alves1-2/+2
I find the mention of "Unix" unnecessary (and really slightly a lie) on GNU/Linux in a couple of places: (gdb) maint print target-stack The current target stack is: - multi-thread (multi-threaded child process.) - child (Unix child process) - exec (Local exec file) - None (None) (gdb) help target child Unix child process (started by the "run" command). (gdb) target child Use the "run" command to start a Unix child process. It's also odd that e.g., the Windows port says "Unix" in reaction to "target child" (it was already that way before Windows used inf-child.c): (gdb) target child Use the "run" command to start a Unix child process. 2013-09-10test: adjust 'cd' regexpr to match an optional canonically pathnameSanimir Agovic1-1/+1
New regexpr now correctly deals with trailing canonical pathname. 2013-05-13* History saving should stay disabled for test cases *Muhammad Bilal1-0/+2
I saw some test cases in gdb.base/default.exp and gdb.base/setshow.exp are enabling the history saving. Hence .gdb_history file is modified with history information even though, by default, we have History saving disabled. So we should modify GDB test cases so that history saving should stay off for all test cases.
