2019-10-31gdb: Don't print a newline in language la_print_typedef methodsAndrew Burgess1-4/+2
When calling the language la_print_typedef method, don't include a newline at the end, instead print the newline from the users of la_print_typedef. This change will be useful in a later commit when the output from la_print_typedef will be placed into an MI output field, in which case the trailing newline is not required. 2019-10-31gdb: Add new commands to list module variables and functionsAndrew Burgess1-0/+348
This patch adds two new commands "info module functions" and "info module variables". These commands list all of the functions and variables grouped by module and then by file. For example: (gdb) info module functions All functions in all modules: Module "mod1": File /some/path/gdb/testsuite/gdb.fortran/info-types.f90: 35: void mod1::__copy_mod1_M1t1(Type m1t1, Type m1t1); 25: void mod1::sub_m1_a(integer(kind=4)); 31: integer(kind=4) mod1::sub_m1_b(void); Module "mod2": File /some/path/gdb/testsuite/gdb.fortran/info-types.f90: 41: void mod2::sub_m2_a(integer(kind=4), logical(kind=4)); 49: logical(kind=4) mod2::sub_m2_b(real(kind=4)); The new commands take set of flags that allow the output to be filtered, the user can filter by variable/function name, type, or containing module. As GDB doesn't currently track the relationship between a module and the variables or functions within it in the symbol table, so I filter based on the module prefix in order to find the functions or variables in each module. What this makes clear is that a user could get this same information using "info variables" and simply provide the prefix themselves, for example: (gdb) info module functions -m mod1 _a All functions matching regular expression "_a", in all modules matching regular expression "mod1": Module "mod1": File /some/path/gdb/testsuite/gdb.fortran/info-types.f90: 25: void mod1::sub_m1_a(integer(kind=4)); Is similar to: (gdb) info functions mod1::.*_a.* All functions matching regular expression "mod1::.*_a": File /some/path/gdb/testsuite/gdb.fortran/info-types.f90: 25: void mod1::sub_m1_a(integer(kind=4)); The benefits I see for a separate command are that the user doesn't have to think (or know) about the module prefix format, nor worry about building a proper regexp. The user can also easily scan across modules without having to build complex regexps. The new function search_module_symbols is extern in this patch despite only being used within symtab.c, this is because a later patch in this series will also be using this function from outside symtab.c. This patch is a new implementation of an idea originally worked on by Mark O'Connor, Chris January, David Lecomber, and Xavier Oro from ARM. gdb/ChangeLog: * symtab.c (info_module_cmdlist): New variable. 2019-10-31gdb/fortran: Add new 'info modules' commandAndrew Burgess1-4/+33
Add a new command 'info modules' that lists all of the modules GDB knows about from the debug information. A module is a debugging entity in the DWARF defined with DW_TAG_module, currently Fortran is known to use this tag for its modules. I'm not aware of any other language that currently makes use of DW_TAG_module. The output style is similar to the 'info type' output: (gdb) info modules All defined modules: File info-types.f90: 16: mod1 24: mod2 (gdb) Where the user is told the file the module is defined in and, on the left hand side, the line number at which the module is defined along with the name of the module. Just some code cleanup. 2019-10-29Only make a nullterminated string if we need toChristian Biesinger1-18/+19
As of 7bb43059820c5febb4509b15202a93efde442bc6, we no longer need a nullterminated linkage_name to look up the entry in the hash table. So this patch makes it so we only make the copy if the entry was not found. By auditing all callers of symbol_set_names, I found out that all cases where the string may not be nullterminated already pass true for COPY_NAME. So here, I am documenting that as a requirement and am removing the code that relies on undefined behavior in symbol_set_names (it accessed the string past the provided length to check for nulltermination). Fix the FAIL by applying gdb_realpath on the fullname variable before the comparison. Tested on x86_64-linux. I wasn't able to write a test-case. Having it as a bitfield causes extra work, and this is not memory-sensitive. I accidentally pushed the wrong version of the patch for commit 7bb43059820c5febb4509b15202a93efde442bc6 (where the review comments were not fixed), and I did a bad conflict resolution for ccb1ba62299edce72053dd567b9d384814e11885 leading to a compile error when libxxhash is available. 2019-10-02Handle copy relocationsTom Tromey1-0/+44
In ELF, if a data symbol is defined in a shared library and used by the main program, it will be subject to a "copy relocation". In this scenario, the main program has a copy of the symbol in question, and a relocation that tells ld.so to copy the data from the shared library. Then the symbol in the main program is used to satisfy all references. This patch changes gdb to handle this scenario. Data symbols coming from ELF shared libraries get a special flag that indicates that the symbol's address may be subject to copy relocation. I looked briefly into handling copy relocations by looking at the actual relocations in the main program, but this seemed difficult to do with BFD. Note that no caching is done here. 2019-10-02Search global block from basic_lookup_symbol_nonlocalAndrew Burgess1-28/+13
This changes lookup_global_symbol to look in the global block of the passed-in block. If no block was passed in, it reverts to the previous behavior. This change is needed to ensure that 'FILENAME'::NAME lookups work properly. As debugging Pedro's test case showed, this was not working properly in the case where multiple identical names could be found (the one situation where this feature is truly needed :-). This also removes some old comments from basic_lookup_symbol_nonlocal that no longer apply. Note that the new test cases for this change will appear in a later patch. 2019-09-19bfd_section_* macrosAlan Modra1-9/+6
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. Currently the 'info types' command will return symbols that correspond to Fortran modules. This is because the symbols are created with domain MODULE_DOMAIN and address_class LOC_TYPEDEF. The address_class LOC_TYPEDEF is the same address_class used for type symbols which is why the modules show up when listing types. 2019-08-07Make first and last lines of 'command help documentation' consistent.Philippe Waroquiers1-2/+1
With this patch, the help docs now respect 2 invariants: * The first line of a command help is terminated by a '.' character. * The last character of a command help is not a newline character. Note that the changes for the last invariant were done by Tom, as part of : [PATCH] Remove trailing newlines from help text https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-06/msg00050.html but some occurrences have been re-introduced since then. Some help docs had to be rephrased/restructured to respect the above invariants. Before this patch, print_doc_line was printing the first line of a command help documentation, but stopping at the first '.' or ',' character. This was giving inconsistent results : * The first line of command helps was sometimes '.' terminated, sometimes not. * The first line of command helps was not always designed to be readable/understandable/unambiguous when stopping at the first '.' or ',' character. This e.g. created the following inconsistencies/problems: < catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions < catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions < catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names < down-silently -- Same as the `down' command while the new help is: > catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions, when raised. > catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions, when handled. > catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names, groups and/or numbers. > down-silently -- Same as the `down' command, but does not print anything. Also, the command help doc should not be terminated by a newline character, but this was not respected by all commands. The cli-option -OPT framework re-introduced some occurences. So, the -OPT build help framework was changed to not output newlines at the end of %OPTIONS% replacement. This patch changes the help documentations to ensure the 2 invariants given above. It implied to slightly rephrase or restructure some help docs. Based on the above invariants, print_doc_line (called by 'apropos' and 'help' commands to print the first line of a command help) now outputs the full first line of a command help. This all results in a lot of small changes in the produced help docs. 2019-07-22gdb: Improve output from "info types" commadAndrew Burgess1-13/+21
This commit makes two changes to the "info types" command: First, only use typedef_print for printing typedefs, and use type_print for printing non-typedef scalar (non-struct) types. The result of this is the output for builtin types goes from this: typedef double; typedef float; typedef int; to this: double; float; int; which seems to make more sense. Next GDB no longer matches msymbols as possible type names. When looking for function symbols it makes sense to report matching msymbols from the text sections, and for variables msymbols from the data/bss sections, but when reporting types GDB would match msymbols of type absolute. But I don't see why these are likely to indicate type names. As such I've updated the msymbol matching lists in symtab.c:search_symbols so that when searching in the TYPES_DOMAIN, we never match any msymbols. gdb/ChangeLog: * symtab.c (search_symbols): Adjust msymbol matching type arrays so that GDB doesn't match any msymbols when searching in the TYPES_DOMAIN. 2019-07-09gdb: Don't skip prologue for explicit line breakpoints in assemblerAndrew Burgess1-8/+13
It was observed that in some cases, placing a breakpoint in an assembler file using filename:line-number syntax would result in the breakpoint being placed at a different line within the file. For example, consider this x86-64 assembler: test: push %rbp /* Break here. */ mov %rsp, %rbp nop /* Stops here. */ The user places the breakpoint using file:line notation targeting the line marked 'Break here', GDB actually stops at the line marked 'Stops here'. The reason is that the label 'test' is identified as the likely start of a function, and the call to symtab.c:skip_prologue_sal causes GDB to skip forward over the instructions that GDB believes to be part of the prologue. I believe however, that when debugging assembler code, where the user has instruction-by-instruction visibility, if they ask for a specific line, GDB should (as far as possible) stop on that line, and not perform any prologue skipping. I don't believe that the behaviour of higher level languages should change, in these cases skipping the prologue seems like the correct thing to do. In order to implement this change I needed to extend our current tracking of when the user has requested an explicit line number. We already tracked this in some cases, but not in others (see the changes in linespec.c). However, once I did this I started to see some additional failures (in tests gdb.base/break-include.exp gdb.base/ending-run.exp gdb.mi/mi-break.exp gdb.mi/mi-reverse.exp gdb.mi/mi-simplerun.exp) where we currently expected a breakpoint placed at one file and line number to be updated to reference a different line number, this was fixed by removing some code in symtab.c:skip_prologue_sal. My concern here is that removing this check didn't cause anything else to fail. I have a new test that covers my original case, this is written for x86-64 as most folk have access to such a target, however, any architecture that has a prologue scanner can be impacted by this change. gdb/ChangeLog: * linespec.c (decode_digits_list_mode): Set explicit_line to a bool value. 2019-06-10[gdb/symtab] Fix symbol loading performance regressionTom de Vries1-6/+9
The commit "[gdb/symtab] Fix language of duplicate static minimal symbol" introduces a performance regression, when loading a cc1 executable build with -O0 -g and gcc 7.4.0. The performance regression, measured in 'real' time is about 175%. The slower execution comes from the fact that the fix in symbol_set_names makes the call to symbol_find_demangled_name unconditional. Fix this by reverting the commit, and redoing the fix as follows. Recapturing the original problem, the first time symbol_set_names is called with gsymbol.language == lang_auto and linkage_name == "_ZL3foov", the name is not present in the per_bfd->demangled_names_hash hash table, so symbol_find_demangled_name is called to demangle the name, after which the mangled/demangled pair is added to the hashtable. The call to symbol_find_demangled_name also sets gsymbol.language to lang_cplus. The second time symbol_set_names is called with gsymbol.language == lang_auto and linkage_name == "_ZL3foov", the name is present in the hash table, so the demangled name from the hash table is used. However, the language of the symbol remains lang_auto. Fix this by adding a field language in struct demangled_name_entry, and using the field in symbol_set_names to set the language of gsymbol, if necessary.
