The recent DWARF indexer rewrite introduced a regression when debugging
a forking program.
Here is a way to reproduce the issue (there might be other ways, but one
is enough and this one mimics the situation we encountered). Consider a
program which forks, and the child loads a shared library and calls a
function in this shared library:
if (fork () == 0)
{
void *solib = dlopen (some_solib, RTLD_NOW);
void (*foo) () = dlsym (some_solib, "foo");
foo ();
}
Suppose that this program is compiled without debug info, but the shared
library it loads has debug info enabled.
When debugging such program with the following options:
- set detach-on-fork off
- set follow-fork-mode child
we see something like:
(gdb) b foo
Function "foo" not defined.
Make breakpoint pending on future shared library load? (y or [n]) y
Breakpoint 1 (foo) pending.
(gdb) run
Starting program: a.out
[Attaching after process 19720 fork to child process 19723]
[New inferior 2 (process 19723)]
[Switching to process 19723]
Thread 2.1 "a.out" hit Breakpoint 1, 0x00007ffff7fc3101 in foo () from .../libfoo.so

---------------------
A fatal error internal to GDB has been detected, further
debugging is not possible. GDB will now terminate.
This is a bug, please report it. For instructions, see:
<https://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/bugs/>.
The first issue observed is in the message printed when hitting the
breakpoint. It says that there was a break in the .so file as if there
was no debug info associated with it, but there is. Later, if we try to
display the source where the execution stopped, we have a segfault.
Note that not having the debug info on the main binary is not strictly
required to encounter some issues, it only is to encounter the segfault.
If the main binary has debug information, GDB shows some source form the
main binary, unrelated to where we stopped.
The core of the issue is that GDB never loads the psymtab for the
library. It is not loaded when we first see the .so because in case of
detach-on-fork off, follow-fork-mode child, infrun.c sets
child_inf->symfile_flags = SYMFILE_NO_READ to delay the psymtab loading
as much as possible. If we compare to what was done to handle this
before the new indexer was activated, the psymatb construction for the
shared library was done under
psymbol_functions::expand_symtabs_matching:
bool
psymbol_functions::expand_symtabs_matching (...)
{
for (partial_symtab *ps : require_partial_symbols (objfile))
...
}
The new indexer's expand_symtabs_matching callback does not have a call
to the objfile's require_partial_symbols, so if the partial symbol table
is not loaded at this point, there is no mechanism to fix this.
Instead of requiring each implementation of the quick_functions to check
that partial symbols have been read, I think it is safer to enforce this
when calling the quick functions. The general pattern for calling the
quick functions is:
for (auto *iter : qf)
iter->the_actual_method_call (...)
This patch proposes to wrap the access of the `qf` field with an accessor
which ensures that partial symbols have been read before iterating:
qf_require_partial_symbols. All calls to quick functions are updated
except:
- quick_functions::dump
- quick_functions::read_partial_symbols (from
objfile::require_partial_symbols)
- quick_functions::can_lazily_read_symbols and quick_functions::has_symbols
(from objfile::has_partial_symbols)
Regression tested on x86_64-gnu-linux.

Now that filtered and unfiltered output can be treated identically, we
can unify the printf family of functions. This is done under the name
"gdb_printf". Most of this patch was written by script.

It seems like this macro is not needed at all anymore, it just wraps the
function of the same name with the same arguments.

This commit brings all the changes made by running gdb/copyright.py
as per GDB's Start of New Year Procedure.
For the avoidance of doubt, all changes in this commits were
performed by the script.

While working on my series to replace the DWARF psymbol reader, I
noticed that the expand_symtabs_matching has an undocumented
invariant. I think that, if this invariant is not followed, then GDB
will crash. So, this patch documents this in the relevant spots and
introduces some asserts to make it clear.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 32.

Adds a new function to the quick_symbol_functions API to let us know
if there are any unexpanded symbols. This functionality is required
by a later commit. After this commit the functionality is unused, and
untested.
The new function objfile::has_unexpanded_symtabs is added to the
symfile-debug.c file which is a little strange, but this
is (currently) where many of the other objfile::* functions (that call
onto the quick_symbol_functions) are defined, so I'm reluctant to
break this pattern.
There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

quick_symbol_functions::map_matching_symbols is only used by the Ada
code. Currently, it both expands certain psymtabs and then walks over
the full symtabs -- including any already-expanded ones -- calling a
callback.
It appears to work lazily as well, in that if the callback returns
false, iteration stops. However, only the psymtab implementation does
this; the DWARF index implementations are not lazy. It turns out,
though, that the only callback that is ever passed here never returns
false.
This patch simplifies this method by removing the callback. The
method is also renamed. In the new scheme, the caller is responsible
for walking the full symtabs, which removes some redundancy as well.

Currently, expand_symtabs_matching only accepts a search_domain
parameter. However, lookup_symbol uses a domain_enum instead, and the
two, confusingly, do quite different things -- one cannot emulate the
other. So, this patch adds a domain_enum parameter to
expand_symtabs_matching, with UNDEF_DOMAIN used as a wildcard.
This is another step toward replacing lookup_symbol with
expand_symtabs_matching.

Partial symbols are read via the sym_fns::sym_read_psymbols function
pointer. In order to separate the partial symbols from the objfile,
this must instead be done via a virtual method on

This moves all the psymtab statistics printing code form symmisc.c to
psymtab.c. This changes the formatting of the output a little, but
considering that it is a maint command (and, I assume, a rarely used
one), this seems fine to me.
This change helps further dissociate the psymtab from the objfile. In
the end there will be no direct connect -- only via the
quick_symbol_functions interface.

This changes quick_symbol_functions to be a base class with pure
virtual methods, rather than a struct holding function pointers.
Then, objfile is changed to hold a unique_ptr to an instance of this

struct psymbol_functions is put into psympriv.h, and not psymtab.c,

Currently the "partial" symbol reader is attached to the objfile's

This introduces wrappers for each function in quick_symbol_functions.
The wrappers are methods on objfile, and are defined in
symfile-debug.c, so that they can use the symfile_debug variable.

wrapper methods.

Consider this test-case, consisting of header file hello.h:
...
inline static const char*
foo (void)
{
return "foo";
}
...
and source file hello.c:
...
int
main (void)
{
printf ("hello: %s\n", foo ());
return 0;
}
...
compiled with -g:
...
$ gcc hello.c -g
...
When trying to expand the partial symtab for hello.h:
...
$ gdb -batch \
-iex "set language c" \
a.out \
-ex "maint expand-symtabs hello.h" \
-ex "maint info psymtabs"
...
we in fact find that the partial symtab for hello.h (and corresponding
includer partial symtab hello.c) have not been expanded:
...
{ psymtab hello.h ((struct partial_symtab *) 0x27cf070)
readin no
...
{ psymtab hello.c ((struct partial_symtab *) 0x2cf09e0)
readin no
...
This is due to the recursively_search_psymtabs call in
psym_expand_symtabs_matching:
...
if (recursively_search_psymtabs (ps, objfile, domain,
lookup_name, symbol_matcher))
...
which always returns false for symbolless partial symtabs.
The same problem occurs with CUs where the dwarf is generated by gas
--gdwarf-2 for a foo.S: if we read such a test-case with -readnow, we'll have
a symbolless symtab for foo.S. But if we read the test-case with partial
symtabs, and expand those using "maint expand-symtabs", the foo.S psymtab
remains unexpanded.
Fix this by passing a NULL symbol_matcher and lookup_name to
expand_symtabs_matching in maintenance_expand_symtabs, and skipping the call
to recursively_search_psymtabs if symbol_matcher == NULL and
lookup_name == NULL.
Build and tested on x86_64-linux, with native.
In addition, tested test-case with target boards cc-with-gdb-index.exp,
cc-with-debug-names.exp and readnow.exp.

When language is set to auto, part of loading an executable is to update the
language accordingly. This is implemented by set_initial_language.
The implementation of set_initial_language works as follows:
- check if any objfile in the progspace has name_of_main/language_of_main
set, and if so, use the first one found. [ This is what you get f.i. when
using dwarf with DW_AT_main_subprogram. ]
- otherwise, check for known names in the minimal symbols, and either:
- use the associated language if any (f.i. for ada), or
- lookup the symbol in the symtab for the name and use the symbol language
(f.i. for c/c++).
The symbol lookup can be slow though.
In the case of the cc1 binary from PR23710 comment 1, getting to the initial
prompt takes ~8s:
...
$ time.sh gdb cc1 -batch -ex "show language"
The current source language is "auto; currently c++".
maxmem: 1272260
real: 8.05
user: 7.73
system: 0.38
...
but if we skip guessing the initial language by setting it instead, it takes
only ~4s:
...
$ time.sh gdb -iex "set language c++" cc1 -batch -ex "show language"
The current source language is "c++".
maxmem: 498272
real: 3.99
user: 3.90
system: 0.15
...
In both cases, we load the partial symbols for the executable, but in the
first case only we also do a lookup of main, which causes the corresponding
partial symtab to be expanded into a full symtab.
Ideally, we'd like to get the language of the symbol without triggering
expansion into a full symtab, and get the speedup without having to set the
language manually.
There's a related fixme in the header comment of set_initial_language:
...
/* Set the initial language.
FIXME: A better solution would be to record the language in the
psymtab when reading partial symbols, and then use it (if known) to
set the language. This would be a win for formats that encode the
language in an easily discoverable place, such as DWARF. For
stabs, we can jump through hoops looking for specially named
symbols or try to intuit the language from the specific type of
stabs we find, but we can't do that until later when we read in
full symbols. */
void
set_initial_language (void)
...
Since we're already tracking the language of partial symbols, use this to set
the language for the main symbol.
Note that this search in partial symbol tables is not guaranteed to yield the
same result as the lookup_symbol_in_language call currently done in
set_initial_language.
Build and reg-tested on x86_64-linux.

I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:
CXX dcache.o
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
_initialize_dcache (void)
^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:
commit 481695ed5f6e0a8a9c9c50bfac1cdd2b3151e6c9
Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org>
Date: Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700
Remove unnecessary function prototypes.
I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these
functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.

This patch further simplifies the map_matching_symbols callback, by

This changes map_matching_symbols to take a
symbol_found_callback_ftype, rather than separate callback and data
parameters. This enables a future patch to clean up some existing
code so that it can more readily be shared.

The only two values valid to pass to the block_index parameter of
quick_symbol_functions::lookup_symbol are GLOBAL_BLOCK and STATIC_BLOCK,
part of enum block_enum. Change the type of that parameter to
block_enum.
Change also the block_index field of dw2_symtab_iterator in the same
way.. This makes it consistent with dw2_debug_names_iterator, which
already uses block_enum for its block_index field.
This is a follow-up to this thread:

This changes the probes code in elfread.c to use the type-safe

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.
gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
|
|
This patch finally makes partial symbols and partial symtabs
independent of the program space.
Specifically:
It changes add_psymbol_to_list to accept a section index, and changes
the psymbol readers to pass this. At the same time it removes the
code to add the objfile's section offset to the psymbol.
It adds an objfile argument to the psymtab textlow and texthigh
accessors and changes some code to use the raw variants instead.
It removes the "relocate" method from struct quick_symbol_functions,
as it is no longer needed any more.
It changes partial_symbol::address so that the relevant offset is now

This converts observers from using a special source-generating script
to be plain C++. This version of the patch takes advantage of C++11
by using std::function and variadic templates; incorporates Pedro's
patches; and renames the header file to "observable.h" (this change
eliminates the need for a clean rebuild).
Note that Pedro's patches used a template lambda in tui-hooks.c, but
this failed to compile on some buildbot instances (presumably due to
differing C++ versions); I replaced this with an ordinary template
function.
Regression tested on the buildbot.

gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files
|
|
In Rust, virtual tables work a bit differently than they do in C++. In
C++, as you know, they are connected to a particular class hierarchy.
Rust, instead, can generate a virtual table for potentially any type --
in fact, one such virtual table for each trait (a trait is similar to an
abstract class or to a Java interface) that a type implements.
Objects that are referenced via a trait can't currently be inspected by
gdb. This patch implements the Rust equivalent of "set print object".
gdb relies heavily on the C++ ABI to decode virtual tables; primarily to
make "set print object" work; but also "info vtbl". However, Rust does
not currently have a specified ABI, so this approach seems unwise to
emulate.
Instead, I've changed the Rust compiler to emit some DWARF that
describes trait objects (previously their internal structure was
opaque), vtables (currently just a size -- but I hope to expand this in
the future), and the concrete type for which a vtable was emitted.
The concrete type is expressed as a DW_AT_containing_type on the
vtable's type. This is a small extension to DWARF.
This patch adds a new entry to quick_symbol_functions to return the
symtab that holds a data address. Previously there was no way in gdb to
look up a full (only minimal) non-text symbol by address. The psymbol
implementation of this method works by lazily filling in a map that is
added to the objfile. This avoids slowing down psymbol reading for a
feature that is likely to not be used too frequently.
I did not update .gdb_index. My thinking here is that the DWARF 5
indices will obsolete .gdb_index soon-ish, meaning that adding a new
feature to them is probably wasted work. If necessary I can update the
DWARF 5 index code when it lands in gdb.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 25.

Summary:
- This is preparation for supporting wild name matching on C++ too.
- This is also preparation for TAB-completion fixes.
- Makes symbol name matching (think strcmp_iw) be based on a per-language method.
- Merges completion and non-completion name comparison (think
language_ops::la_get_symbol_name_cmp generalized).
- Avoid re-hashing lookup name multiple times
- Centralizes preparing a name for lookup (Ada name encoding / C++ Demangling),
both completion and non-completion.
- Fixes Ada latent bug with verbatim name matches in expressions
- Makes ada-lang.c use common|symtab.c completion code a bit more.
Ada's wild matching basically means that
"(gdb) break foo"
will find all methods named "foo" in all packages. Translating to
C++, it's roughly the same as saying that "break klass::method" sets
breakpoints on all "klass::method" methods of all classes, no matter
the namespace. A following patch will teach GDB about fullname vs
wild matching for C++ too. This patch is preparatory work to get
there.
Another idea here is to do symbol name matching based on the symbol
language's algorithm. I.e., avoid dependency on current language set.
This allows for example doing
(gdb) b foo::bar< int > (<tab>
and having gdb name match the C++ symbols correctly even if the
current language is C or Assembly (or Rust, or Ada, or ...), which can
easily happen if you step into an Assembly/C runtime library frame.
By encapsulating all the information related to a lookup name in a
class, we can also cache hash computation for a given language in the
lookup name object, to avoid recomputing it over and over.
Similarly, because we don't really know upfront which languages the
lookup name will be matched against, for each language we store the
lookup name transformed into a search name. E.g., for C++, that means
demangling the name. But for Ada, it means encoding the name. This
actually forces us to centralize all the different lookup name
encoding in a central place, resulting in clearer code, IMO. See
e.g., the new ada_lookup_name_info class.
The lookup name -> symbol search name computation is also done only
once per language.
The old language->la_get_symbol_name_cmp / symbol_name_cmp_ftype are
generalized to work with both completion, and normal symbol look up.
At some point early on, I had separate completion vs non-completion
language vector entry points, but a single method ends up being better
IMO for simplifying things -- the more we merge the completion /
non-completion name lookup code paths, the less changes for bugs
causing completion vs normal lookup finding different symbols.
The ada-lex.l change is necessary because when doing
(gdb) p <UpperCase>
then the name that is passed to write_ write_var_or_type ->
ada_lookup_symbol_list misses the "<>", i.e., it's just "UpperCase",
and we end up doing a wild match against "UpperCase" lowercased by
ada_lookup_name_info's constructor. I.e., "uppercase" wouldn't ever
match "UpperCase", and the symbol lookup fails.
This wouldn't cause any regression in the testsuite, but I added a new
test that would pass before the patch and fail after, if it weren't
for that fix.
This is latent bug that happens to go unnoticed because that
particular path was inconsistent with the rest of Ada symbol lookup by
not lowercasing the lookup name.
Ada's symbol_completion_add is deleted, replaced by using common
code's completion_list_add_name. To make the latter work for Ada, we
needed to add a new output parameter, because Ada wants to return back
a custom completion candidates that are not the symbol name.
With this patch, minimal symbol demangled name hashing is made
consistent with regular symbol hashing. I.e., it now goes via the
language vector's search_name_hash method too, as I had suggested in a
previous patch.
dw2_expand_symtabs_matching / .gdb_index symbol names were a
challenge. The problem is that we have no way to telling what is the
language of each symbol name found in the index, until we expand the
corresponding full symbol, which is off course what we're trying to
avoid. Language information is simply not considered in the index
format... Since the symbol name hashing and comparison routines are
per-language, we now have a problem. The patch sorts this out by
matching each name against all languages. This is inneficient, and
indeed slows down completion several times. E.g., with:
$ cat script.cmd
set pagination off
set $count = 0
while $count < 400
complete b string_prin
printf "count = %d\n", $count
set $count = $count + 1
end
$ time gdb --batch -q ./gdb-with-index -ex "source script-string_printf.cmd"
I get, before patch (-O2, x86-64):
real 0m1.773s
user 0m1.737s
sys 0m0.040s
While after patch (-O2, x86-64):
real 0m9.843s
user 0m9.482s
sys 0m0.034s
However, the following patch will optimize this, and will actually
make this use case faster compared to the "before patch" above:
real 0m1.321s
user 0m1.285s
sys 0m0.039s
