PR build/27579 points out that the expression rewrite series
introduced a build failure with GCC 4.8.2. The bug is that there's no
std::hash specialization for enum exp_opcode. This patch fixes the
problem by using gdb::hash_enum.

This removes union exp_element functions that either create such
elements or walk them. struct expression no longer holds
exp_elements. A couple of language_defn methods are also removed, as
they are obsolete.
Note that this patch also removes the print_expression code. The only
in-tree caller of this was from dump_prefix_expression, which is only
called when expression debugging is enabled. Implementing this would
involve a fair amount of code, and it seems to me that prefix dumping
is preferable anyway, as it is unambiguous. So, I have not
reimplemented this feature.

This adds an expr::operation_up to struct expression, and then
modifies various parts of GDB to use this member when it is non-null.
The list of such spots was a bit surprising to me, and found only
after writing most of the code and then noticing what no longer
compiled.
In a few spots, new accessor methods are added to operation
subclasses, so that code that dissects an expression will work with
the new scheme.
After this change, code that constructs an expression can be switched
to the new form without breaking.

The creation of this patch was motivated by Tom's "Change handling of
'!' operator in stap probes" patch.
While reviewing his patch, I stumbled upon a few issues with the stap
expression parser. They are:
- As it turns out, even with Tom's patch applied the parser doesn't
properly handle the '!' operator. The underlying issue was the fact
that stap_parse_argument_conditionally also needed to be patched in
order to recognize '!' as an operator that is part of a single
operand, and parse it accordingly.
- While writing the testcase I'm proposing on this patch, I found that
parenthesized sub-expressions were not being parsed correctly when
there was another term after them. For example:
1 - (2 + 3) + 4
In this case, the parser was considering "1" to be the left-side of
the expression, and "(2 + 3) + 4" to be the right-side. The patch
fixes the parser by making it identify whether a parenthesized
sub-expression has just been parsed, and act accordingly.
I've tested this on my Debian testing amd64, and everything seems OK.

While working on the expression rewrite, I found a few spots that
called the internal functions of the expression evaluator, just to
pass in an expected type. This patch adds a parameter to
evaluate_expression so that these functions can avoid this dependency.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 28.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

This changes get_objfile_arch to be a new inline method,
objfile::arch.
To my surprise, this function came up while profiling DWARF psymbol
reading. Making this change improved performance from 1.986 seconds
to 1.869 seconds. Both measurements were done by taking the mean of
10 runs on a fixed copy of the gdb executable.

The pattern
objfile->section_offsets[SECT_OFF_TEXT (objfile)]
... appears very often, to get the offset of the text section of an
objfile. I thought it would be more readable to write it as:
objfile->text_section_offset ()
... so I added this method and used it where possible. I also added
data_section_offset, although it is not used as much.

I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

According to the SystemTap documentation on user-space probes[0], stap
probe points without semaphores are denoted by setting the semaphore
address in the probe's note to zero. At present the code does do a
comparison of the semaphore address against zero, but only after it's
been relocated; as such it will (almost?) always fail, commonly
resulting in GDB trying to overwrite the ELF magic located at the
image's base address.
This commit tests the address as specified in the SDT note rather than
the relocated value in order to correctly detect absent probe
semaphores.

This changes section_offsets to be specialization of a std::vector and
updates all the users. It also removes the ANOFFSET and
SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS macros.
Most of this is just a generic sort of cleanup, that reduces the
number of lines of code. However, a couple spots were doing weird
things.
objfile_relocate did:
- std::vector<struct section_offsets>
- new_debug_offsets (SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS (debug_objfile->num_sections));
... which seems to greatly over-estimate the number of elements
needed.
This appeared in set_objfile_default_section_offset:
- std::vector<struct section_offsets> offsets (objf->num_sections,
- { { offset } });
... which makes sense due to type safety, but is also actively
confusing given that section_offsets was previously also a kind of
vector type.
Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30.

PR build/24937 concerns an error given by the clang provided by a
particular version of macOS. In particular, it reports
error: default initialization of an object of const type 'const
stap_static_probe_ops' without a user-provided default constructor
Although (at least according to sources I found online) this was
resolved as a bug in the standard, it seemed simple enough to work
around this.
Given that this is a trivial build fix, I think it should go on the
gdb 9 branch as well.

- Rationale:
It is possible for compilers to indicate the desired byte order
interpretation of scalar variables using the DWARF attribute:
DW_AT_endianity
A type flagged with this variable would typically use one of:
DW_END_big
DW_END_little
which instructs the debugger what the desired byte order interpretation
of the variable should be.
The GCC compiler (as of V6) has a mechanism for setting the desired byte
ordering of the fields within a structure or union. For, example, on a
little endian target, a structure declared as:

} __attribute__( ( scalar_storage_order( "big-endian" ) ) );
could be used to ensure all the structure members have a big-endian
interpretation (the compiler would automatically insert byte swap
instructions before and after respective store and load instructions).
- To reproduce
GCC V8 is required to correctly emit DW_AT_endianity DWARF attributes
in all situations when the scalar_storage_order attribute is used.
A fix for (dwarf endianity instrumentation) for GCC V6-V7 can be found

Removes vec.c and vec.h from the source tree, and remove all the
remaining includes of vec.h. There should be no user visible changes
after this commit.
I did have a few issues rebuilding GDB after applying this patch due
to cached dependencies, I found that running this command in the build
directory resolved my build issues without requiring a 'make clean':

Non-const reference parameter should be avoided according to the GDB
coding standard:

This commit updates the gdbarch method gdbarch_stap_adjust_register,
and the one implementation i386_stap_adjust_register to avoid using a
non-const reference parameter.
I've also removed the kfail from the testsuite for bug 24541, as this
issue is now resolved.

This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.
This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.
I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.
Tested by the buildbot.

This bug has been reported on PR breakpoints/24541, but it is possible
to reproduce it easily by running:

The underlying cause is kind of complex, and involves decisions made
by GCC and the sys/sdt.h header file about how to represent a probe
argument that lives in a register in 32-bit programs. I'll use
Andrew's example on the bug to illustrate the problem.
libstdc++ has a probe named "throw" with two arguments. On i386, the
probe is:

the "4@") that lives on %si, and the second argument is an unsigned
32-bit value that lives on %di. Note the discrepancy between the
argument size reported by the probe (32-bit) and the register size
being used to store the value (16-bit).

Note how the program is actually using %edi, and not %di, to store the
second argument. This is the problem here.
GDB will basically read the probe argument, then read the contents of
%di, and then cast this value to uint32_t, which causes the wrong
value to be obtained. In the gdb.base/stap-probe.exp case, this makes
GDB read the wrong memory location, and not be able to display a test
string. In Andrew's example, this causes GDB to actually stop at a
"catch throw" when it should actually have *not* stopped.
After some discussion with Frank Eigler and Jakub Jelinek, it was
decided that this bug should be fixed on the client side (i.e., the
program that actually reads the probes), and this is why I'm proposing
this patch.
The idea is simple: we will have a gdbarch method, which, for now, is
only used by i386. The generic code that deals with register operands
on gdb/stap-probe.c will call this method if it exists, passing the
current parse information, the register name and its number.
The i386 method will then verify if the register size is greater or
equal than the size reported by the stap probe (the "4@" part). If it
is, we're fine. Otherwise, it will check if we're dealing with any of
the "extendable" registers (like ax, bx, si, di, sp, etc.). If we
are, it will change the register name to include the "e" prefix.
I have tested the patch here in many scenarios, and it fixes Andrew's
bug and also the regressions I mentioned before, on
gdb.base/stap-probe.exp. No regressions where found on other tests.

This changes the probes code in elfread.c to use the type-safe
registry API. While doing this, I saw that the caller of get_probes
owns the probes, so I went through the code and changed the vectors to
store unique_ptrs, making the ownership relationship more clear.

All the real (not test) uses of parser_state pass 10 as the
"initial_size" parameter, and it seems to me that there's no real

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

When compiling with clang 3.8 (default clang version on Debian
Stretch, the current stable), we get errors like this:

The complaint system seems to allow for multiple different complaint
topics. However, in practice only symfile_complaints has ever been
defined. Seeing that complaints.c dates to 1992, and that no new
complaints have been added in the intervening years, I think it is
reasonable to admit that complaints are specifically related to
debuginfo reading.
This patch removes symfile_complaints and updates all the callers.
Some of these spots should perhaps be calls to warning instead, but I
did not make that change.

Pedro has kindly pointed out that
gdb.arch/amd64-stap-optional-prefix.exp was failing after my
C++-ification patches touching the probe interface. The failure is
kind of cryptic:

It took me a while to figure out where this SIGILL is coming from.
Initially I thought it was something related to writing registers to
the inferior when dealing with probe arguments, but I discarded this
since the arguments were not touching any registers.
In the end, this was a mistake that was introduced during the review
process of the patch. When setting/clearing a SystemTap probe's
semaphore, the code was using 'm_address' (which refers the probe's
address) instead of 'm_sem_addr' (which refers to the semaphore's
address). This caused GDB to write a bogus value in the wrong memory
position, which in turn caused the SIGILL.
I am pushing this patch to correct the mistake.
On a side note: I told Pedro that the BuildBot hadn't caught the
failure during my try build, and for a moment there was a suspicion
that the BuildBot might be at fault here. However, I investigate this
and noticed that I only did one try build, with a patch that was
correctly using 'm_sem_addr' where applicable, and therefore no
failure should have happened indeed. I probably should have requested
another try build after addressing the review's comments, but they
were mostly basic and I didn't think it was needed. Oh, well.

This patch converts the SystemTap probe
interface (gdb/stap-probe.[ch]) to C++, and also performs some
cleanups that were on my TODO list for a while.
The main changes were the conversion of 'struct stap_probe' to 'class
stap_probe', and a new 'class stap_static_probe_ops' to replace the
use of 'stap_probe_ops'. Both classes implement the virtual methods
exported by their parents, 'class probe' and 'class static_probe_ops',
respectively. I believe it's now a bit simpler to understand the
logic behind the stap-probe interface.
There are several helper functions used to parse parts of a stap
probe, and since they are generic and don't need to know about the
probe they're working on, I decided to leave them as simple static
functions (instead of e.g. converting them to class methods).
I've also converted a few uses of "VEC" to "std::vector", which makes
the code simpler and easier to maintain. And, as usual, some cleanups
here and there.
Even though I'm sending a series of patches, they need to be tested
and committed as a single unit, because of inter-dependencies. But it
should be easier to review in separate logical units.
I've regtested this patch on BuildBot, no regressions found.

This patch changes one usage of VEC to std::vector. It is a relatively
straightforward 1:1 change. The implementations of
sym_probe_fns::sym_get_probes return a borrowed reference to their probe
vectors, meaning that the caller should not free it. In the new code, I
made them return a const reference to the vector.
This patch and the following one were tested by the buildbot. I didn't
see any failures that looked related to this one.

This renames a few functions -- skip_spaces_const,
skip_to_space_const, get_number_const, extract_arg_const -- to drop
the "_const" suffix and instead rely on overloading.
This makes future const fixes simpler by reducing the number of lines
that must be changed. I think it is also not any less clear, as all
these functions have the same interface as their non-const versions by
design. Furthermore there's an example of using an overload in-tree
already, namely check_for_argument.
This patch was largely created using some perl one-liners; then a few
fixes were applied by hand.

Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the
allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when
assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case
more often than not).
The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit
"(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I
validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to
make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I
could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc.
Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing
it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time.
Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This
means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be
dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to
build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't
know.
I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.

ret->args_u.text is const char *, probe_args is const char *, so no cast
is needed. Found while doing cxx-conversion stuff, since it wouldn't
build in C++.
