The function stabsect_build_psymtabs, defined in the dbxread file, is no
longer used in any parts of GDB, so this commit just removes it.
Tested by rebuilding.

With the previous commits, the only thing entangling elf and coff file
reading with dbx file reading is the functions
{elf|coff}stab_build_psymtabs, defined in dbxread.c. These functions
depend on dbx_symfile_read.
To solve this, I renamed read_stabs_symtab to read_stabs_symtab_1, and
created a function with the original name that does what
dbx_symfile_read used to do.
This way, dbx_symfile_read can just call read_stabs_symtab, and the elf
and coff psymtab builders can also call it directly, fully disentangling
the readers, which would allow us to selectively not compile dbxread in
the future.

Despite the name, read_dbx_symtab is not only used for the dbx file
format (also called the aout format). It is used by elf and coff
implicitly as well. So I think it makes more sense to have this function
in the generic stabsread file, so that reading elf files or coff files
depends less on GDB's ability to read dbx files.
There were 11 static functions in dbxread that were onlyl helper
functions, they were moved and kept as static in stabsread.c. Notably,
dbx_read_symtab - which is installed as a callback on legacy_psymtab
for aout, elf and coff at least - has been moved to stabsread.c and
renamed as well; the function that is specific to aout is
dbx_symfile_read, and that hasn't been moved.
Some macros had to be moved as well, but since they are still used
in dbxread, they were moved to the .h file that the struct symloc
is declared, so anyone can properly use the struct.

This function is used by multiple stabs readers (even if not all), and
the comment in stabsread.h even acknowledges it. I believe that the
comment is incorrect in saying that the function should be in dbxread
because not everyone uses it. If any one reader other than dbx uses
it, the function should be in stabsread, in my opinion.
This commit makes also renames the function to stabs_end_psymtab since,
again, this is not specific to dbx/aout format.
struct symloc had to be moved because stabs_end_psymtab dereferences
symloc objects, so stabsread.c must be aware of the full struct.

The function process_one_symbol was defined in the file dbxread.c, but
this function is used by all file formats that handle stabs debug
information. It makes much more sense for it to be in the stabsread.c
file instead.
To move that function, many other static functions had to be moved from
dbxread. A few were only used by process_one_symbol, so they're still
static, but most were used by other functions still in dbxread, so they
are being exported by stabsread.h
Finally, the registry entry has been moved as well, seeing as it was
already exported by gdb-stabs.h, and stabsread.c will need it to
properly use the newly added function.
With this change, reading mdebug files is totally independent of reading
dbx.

This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

I found that most spots including psymtab.h do not need it. This
patch removes these includes, and also one unnecessary include of
psympriv.h.
|
|
This changes partial symbol tables to use unrelocated_addr for the
text_high and text_low members. This revealed some latent bugs in
ctfread.c, which are fixed here.
|
|
This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script,
which automated the update of the copyright year range for all
source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include
year 2023.
|
|
This commit brings all the changes made by running gdb/copyright.py
as per GDB's Start of New Year Procedure.
For the avoidance of doubt, all changes in this commits were
performed by the script.

Currently, all psymbol readers access the psymtab storage via the
objfile. This is done directly at any spot requiring the storage.
In order to move psymbols out of the objfile, the psymtab_storage must
be passed in explicitly. This patch consolidates the access of the
storage in a single place in these readers, updating various functions
to pass the storage object around. "Hidden" uses, like
"objfile->psymtabs ()", are also updated.
The DWARF reader is not yet touched. That requires more complicated
changes.

This introduces a new partial_symtab::read_symtab method, and updates
the symbol readers to subclass partial_symtab and implement this
method. The old read_symtab and read_symtab_private members are
removed.
In practice, only DWARF and CTF are truly updated to take advantage of
the new setup. The other symbol readers are less actively maintained,
and so this patch also introduces a "legacy_psymtab", which
essentially works the same way as the old partial_symtab.
(Note that, without more knowledge of the interaction between these
symbol readers, fixing this to remove the new (small) overhead is not
trivial, because these readers copy the read_symtab pointer between
partial symtabs.)

This changes section_offsets to be specialization of a std::vector and
updates all the users. It also removes the ANOFFSET and
SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS macros.
Most of this is just a generic sort of cleanup, that reduces the
number of lines of code. However, a couple spots were doing weird
things.
objfile_relocate did:
- std::vector<struct section_offsets>
- new_debug_offsets (SIZEOF_N_SECTION_OFFSETS (debug_objfile->num_sections));
... which seems to greatly over-estimate the number of elements
needed.
This appeared in set_objfile_default_section_offset:
- std::vector<struct section_offsets> offsets (objf->num_sections,
- { { offset } });
... which makes sense due to type safety, but is also actively
confusing given that section_offsets was previously also a kind of
vector type.
Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30.

While working on my other scripts to deal with gdb headers, I noticed
that some files were missing include guards. I wrote a script to add
the missing ones, but found that using the obvious names for the
guards ran into clashes -- for example, gdb/nat/linux-nat.h used
"LINUX_NAT_H", but this was also the script's choice for
gdb/linux-nat.h.
So, I changed the script to normalize all include guards in gdb. This
patch is the result.
As usual the script is available here:
https://github.com/tromey/gdb-refactoring-scripts
Tested by rebuilding; I also ran it through "Fedora-x86_64-m64" on the
buildbot.

This removes the EXTERN define from stabsread.h. This is the only
spot that still uses this approach, and it interfered with sorting the
includes in stabsread.c.
Tested by rebuilding.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-01-22 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* stabsread.c (EXTERN): Do not define.

(n_this_object_header_files)
(n_allocated_this_object_header_files): Define.
* stabsread.h (EXTERN): Never define. Use "extern".

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

The global within_function is only used by a few symbol readers. This
patch moves the global out of buildsym and into stabsread, which
seemed like a better fit. It also arranges for the existing readers
to clear the global at the appropriate time.

processing_gcc is also only used by stabsread -- it is set by the
DWARF reader, but this turns out not to be needed. So, this patch
moves processing_gcc and removes the assignment from the DWARF reader.

A few things that currently reside in buildsym.c turn out to be
specific to the stabs reader. This patch moves these from
buildsym.[ch] to stabsread.[ch].

gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files
|
|
Currently, we have a mess of symbol name hashing/comparison routines.
There's msymbol_hash for mangled names, and dict_hash and
msymbol_hash_iw for demangled names. Then there's strcmp_iw,
strcmp_iw_ordered and Ada's full_match/wild_match, which all have to
agree with the hashing routines. That's why dict_hash is really about
Ada names. From the inconsistency department, minimal symbol hashing
doesn't go via dict_hash, so Ada's wild matching can't ever work with
minimal symbols.
This patch starts fixing this, by doing two things:
#1 - adds a language vector method to let each language decide how to
compute a symbol name hash.
#2 - makes dictionaries know the language of the symbols they hold,
and then use the dictionaries language to decide which hashing
method to use.
For now, this is just scaffolding, since all languages install the
default method. The series will make C++ install its own hashing
method later on, and will add per-language symbol name comparison
routines too.
This patch was originally based on a patch that Keith wrote for the
libcc1/C++ WIP support.
