Frame unwinders have historically been a structure populated with
callback pointers, so that architectures (or other specific unwinders)
could install their own way to handle the inferior. However, since
moving to C++, we could use polymorphism to get the same functionality
in a more readable way. Polymorphism also makes it simpler to add new
functionality to all frame unwinders, since all that's required is
adding it to the base class.
As part of the changes to add support to disabling frame unwinders,
this commit makes the first baby step in using polymorphism for the
frame unwinders, by making frame_unwind a virtual class, and adds a
couple of new classes. The main class added is frame_unwind_legacy,
which works the same as the previous structs, using function pointers
as callbacks. This class was added to allow the transition to happen
piecemeal. New unwinders should instead follow the lead of the other
classes implemented.
2 of the others, frame_unwind_python and frame_unwind_trampoline, were added
because it seemed simpler at the moment to do that instead of reworking
the dynamic allocation to work with the legacy class, and can be used as
an example to future implementations.
Finally, the cygwin unwinder was converted to a class since it was most
of the way there already.

A future patch will add a way to disable certain unwinders based on
different characteristics. This patch aims to make it more convenient
to disable related unwinders in bulk, such as architecture specific
ones, by identifying all unwinders by which part of the code adds it.
The classes, and explanations, are as follows:
* GDB: An internal unwinder, added by GDB core, such as the unwinder
for dummy frames;
* EXTENSION: Unwinders added by extension languages;
* DEBUGINFO: Unwinders installed by the debug info reader;
* ARCH: Unwinders installed by the architecture specific code.

Most files including gdbcmd.h currently rely on it to access things
actually declared in cli/cli-cmds.h (setlist, showlist, etc). To make
things easy, replace all includes of gdbcmd.h with includes of
cli/cli-cmds.h. This might lead to some unused includes of
cli/cli-cmds.h, but it's harmless, and much faster than going through
the 170 or so files by hand.

Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the
`-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include
them. Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find. Update
the generation scripts where relevant.

We currently pass frames to function by value, as `frame_info_ptr`.
This is somewhat expensive:
- the size of `frame_info_ptr` is 64 bytes, which is a bit big to pass
by value
- the constructors and destructor link/unlink the object in the global
`frame_info_ptr::frame_list` list. This is an `intrusive_list`, so
it's not so bad: it's just assigning a few points, there's no memory
allocation as if it was `std::list`, but still it's useless to do
that over and over.
As suggested by Tom Tromey, change many function signatures to accept
`const frame_info_ptr &` instead of `frame_info_ptr`.
Some functions reassign their `frame_info_ptr` parameter, like:

I wondered what to do about them, do I leave them as-is or change them
(and need to introduce a separate local variable that can be
re-assigned). I opted for the later for consistency. It might not be
clear why some functions take `const frame_info_ptr &` while others take
`frame_info_ptr`. Also, if a function took a `frame_info_ptr` because
it did re-assign its parameter, I doubt that we would think to change it
to `const frame_info_ptr &` should the implementation change such that
it doesn't need to take `frame_info_ptr` anymore. It seems better to
have a simple rule and apply it everywhere.

This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

Some functions related to the handling of registers in frames accept
"this frame", for which we want to read or write the register values,
while other functions accept "the next frame", which is the frame next
to that. The later is needed because we sometimes need to read register
values for a frame that does not exist yet (usually when trying to
unwind that frame-to-be).
value_of_register and value_of_register_lazy both take "this frame",
even if what they ultimately want internally is "the next frame". This
is annoying if you are in a spot that currently has "the next frame" and
need to call one of these functions (which happens later in this
series). You need to get the previous frame only for those functions to
get the next frame again. This is more manipulations, more chances of
mistake.
I propose to change these functions (and a few more functions in the
subsequent patches) to operate on "the next frame". Things become a bit
less awkward when all these functions agree on which frame they take.
So, in this patch, change value_of_register_lazy and value_of_register
to take "the next frame" instead of "this frame". This adds a lot of
get_next_frame_sentinel_okay, but if we convert the user registers API
to also use "the next frame" instead of "this frame", it will get simple
again.

It's currently not clear how the ownership of gdbarch_tdep objects
works. In fact, nothing ever takes ownership of it. This is mostly
fine because we never free gdbarch objects, and thus we never free
gdbarch_tdep objects. There is an exception to that however: when
initialization fails, we do free the gdbarch object that is not going to
be used, and we free the tdep too. Currently, i386 and s390 do it.
To make things clearer, change gdbarch_alloc so that it takes ownership
of the tdep. The tdep is thus automatically freed if the gdbarch is
freed.
Change all gdbarch initialization functions to pass a new gdbarch_tdep
object to gdbarch_alloc and then retrieve a non-owning reference from
the gdbarch object.
Before this patch, the xtensa architecture had a single global instance
of xtensa_gdbarch_tdep. Since we need to pass a dynamically allocated
gdbarch_tdep_base instance to gdbarch_alloc, remove this global
instance, and dynamically allocate one as needed, like we do for all
other architectures. Make the `rmap` array externally visible and
rename it to the less collision-prone `xtensa_rmap` name.

This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script,
which automated the update of the copyright year range for all
source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include
year 2023.

This changes GDB to use frame_info_ptr instead of frame_info *
The substitution was done with multiple sequential `sed` commands:
sed 's/^struct frame_info;/class frame_info_ptr;/'
sed 's/struct frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' - which left some
issues in a few files, that were manually fixed.
sed 's/\<frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g'
sed 's/frame_info_ptr $/frame_info_ptr/g' - used to remove whitespace
problems.
The changed files were then manually checked and some 'sed' changes
undone, some constructors and some gets were added, according to what
made sense, and what Tromey originally did

gdb: move the type cast into gdbarch_tdep
GDB would no longer build using g++ 4.8. The issue appears to be some
confusion caused by GDB having 'struct gdbarch_tdep', but also a
templated function called 'gdbarch_tdep'. Prior to the above commit
the gdbarch_tdep function was not templated, and this compiled just
fine. Note that the above commit compiles just fine with later
versions of g++, so this issue was clearly fixed at some point, though
I've not tried to track down exactly when.
In this commit I propose to fix the g++ 4.8 build problem by renaming
'struct gdbarch_tdep' to 'struct gdbarch_tdep_base'. This rename
better represents that the struct is only ever used as a base class,
and removes the overloading of the name, which allows GDB to build
with g++ 4.8.
I've also updated the comment on 'struct gdbarch_tdep_base' to fix a
typo, and the comment on the 'gdbarch_tdep' function, to mention that
in maintainer mode a run-time type check is performed.

This commit started from an observation I made while working on some
other disassembler patches, that is, that the function
gdb_buffered_insn_length, is broken ... sort of.
I noticed that the gdb_buffered_insn_length function doesn't set up
the application data field if the disassemble_info structure.
Further, I noticed that some architectures, for example, ARM, require
that the application_data field be set, see gdb_print_insn_arm in
arm-tdep.c.
And so, if we ever use gdb_buffered_insn_length for ARM, then GDB will
likely crash. Which is why I said only "sort of" broken. Right now
we don't use gdb_buffered_insn_length with ARM, so maybe it isn't
broken yet?
Anyway to prove to myself that there was a problem here I extended the
disassembler self tests in disasm-selftests.c to include a test of
gdb_buffered_insn_length. As I run the test for all architectures, I
do indeed see GDB crash for ARM.
To fix this we need gdb_buffered_insn_length to create a disassembler
that inherits from gdb_disassemble_info, but we also need this new
disassembler to not print anything.
And so, I introduce a new gdb_non_printing_disassembler class, this is
a disassembler that doesn't print anything to the output stream.
I then observed that both ARC and S12Z also create non-printing
disassemblers, but these are slightly different. While the
disassembler in gdb_non_printing_disassembler reads the instruction
from a buffer, the ARC and S12Z disassemblers read from target memory
using target_read_code.
And so, I further split gdb_non_printing_disassembler into two
sub-classes, gdb_non_printing_memory_disassembler and
gdb_non_printing_buffer_disassembler.
The new selftests now pass, but otherwise, there should be no user
visible changes after this commit.

While working on the disassembler I was getting frustrated. Every
time I touched disasm.h it seemed like every file in GDB would need to
be rebuilt. Surely the disassembler can't be required by that many
parts of GDB, right?
Turns out that disasm.h is included in target.h, so pretty much every
file was being rebuilt!
The only thing from disasm.h that target.h needed is the
gdb_disassembly_flag enum, as this is part of the target_ops api.
In this commit I move gdb_disassembly_flag into its own file. This is
then included in target.h and disasm.h, after which, the number of
files that depend on disasm.h is much reduced.
I also audited all the other includes of disasm.h and found that the
includes in mep-tdep.c and python/py-registers.c are no longer needed,
so I've removed these.
Now, after changing disasm.h, GDB rebuilds much quicker.
There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

We have three places in gdb where we initialise a disassembler that
will not print anything (used for figuring out the length of
instructions, or collecting other information from the disassembler).
Each of these places has its own stub function to act as a print like
callback, the stub function is identical in each case, and just does
nothing.
In this commit I create a new function to initialise a disassembler
that doesn't print anything, and have all three locations use this new
function. There's now only one non-printing stub function.
There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

Various targets introduce their own commands, which then use
unfiltered output. It's better to use filtered output by default, so
this patch fixes the instances I found.

Commit 345bd07cce33 ("gdb: fix gdbarch_tdep ODR violation") made a bunch
of files define a *_gdbarch_tdep class that inherits from a gdbarch_tdep
base. But some of these files don't include gdbarch.h, where
gdbarch_tdep is defined. This may cause build errors if gdbarch.h isn't
already included by chance by some other header file. Avoid this by
making them include gdbarch.h.

I would like to be able to use non-trivial types in gdbarch_tdep types.
This is not possible at the moment (in theory), because of the one
definition rule.
To allow it, rename all gdbarch_tdep types to <arch>_gdbarch_tdep, and
make them inherit from a gdbarch_tdep base class. The inheritance is
necessary to be able to pass pointers to all these <arch>_gdbarch_tdep
objects to gdbarch_alloc, which takes a pointer to gdbarch_tdep.
These objects are never deleted through a base class pointer, so I
didn't include a virtual destructor. In the future, if gdbarch objects
deletable, I could imagine that the gdbarch_tdep objects could become
owned by the gdbarch objects, and then it would become useful to have a
virtual destructor (so that the gdbarch object can delete the owned
gdbarch_tdep object). But that's not necessary right now.
It turns out that RISC-V already has a gdbarch_tdep that is
non-default-constructible, so that provides a good motivation for this
change.
Most changes are fairly straightforward, mostly needing to add some
casts all over the place. There is however the xtensa architecture,
doing its own little weird thing to define its gdbarch_tdep. I did my
best to adapt it, but I can't test those changes.

I wrote this while debugging a problem where the expected unwinder for a
frame wasn't used. It adds messages to show which unwinders are
considered for a frame, why they are not selected (if an exception is
thrown), and finally which unwinder is selected in the end.
To be able to show a meaningful, human-readable name for the unwinders,
add a "name" field to struct frame_unwind, and update all instances to
include a name.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

Remove TYPE_CODE, changing all the call sites to use type::code
directly. This is quite a big diff, but this was mostly done using sed
and coccinelle. A few call sites were done by hand.

I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

Now that gdb can unconditionally use a -I pointing at the top of the
source tree, we can remove the ugly "../opcodes/" formulation that was
needed earlier. This patch adds the -I and cleans up these includes.

This file exists in binutils-gdb/opcodes, and nothing in Makefile.in adds this
to the include path. Default builds work because in-tree readline adds
binutils-gdb/ to the include path (!). However, this is broken when compiling
with system readline.
Other files already use this way to include files in opcodes:
./gdb/lm32-tdep.c:#include "../opcodes/lm32-desc.h"
./gdb/or1k-tdep.h:#include "../opcodes/or1k-desc.h"

This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.
This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.
I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.
Tested by the buildbot.

ARI pointed out that a recent patch introduced a call to "warning"
with a string that ended in a newline:
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-06/msg00000.html
This is generally forbidden, I believe, because warning adds its own
newline.
This patch removes all of the trailing newlines I was able to find. I
searched for 'warning (.*\\n"' and then fixed the ones where the
newline appeared at the end of the string (some had internal
newlines).
Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29.

Previously, the stack unwinder searched through consecutive bytes for values
which it thought might be the start of a stack mutating operation.
This was error prone, because such bytes could also be the operands of other
instructions. This change uses the opcodes api to interpret the code in each
frame.

Make use of the default gdbarch methods for gdbarch_unwind_pc, and
gdbarch_unwind_sp where possible.
I have not tested this change but, by inspecting the code, I believe
the default methods are equivalent to the code being deleted.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.
