This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage in gas processing. bfd/ * bfd-in.h (bfd_get_section_name, bfd_get_section_vma), (bfd_get_section_lma, bfd_get_section_alignment), (bfd_get_section_size, bfd_get_section_flags), (bfd_get_section_userdata): Delete. 2019-07-09Rename common to gdbsupportTom Tromey1-1/+1
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the top level. This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit more tractable. I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too much difficulty. 2019-04-08Rename gdb exception typesTom Tromey1-1/+1
This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone. This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). In AIX if gdb is debugging an application which has a signal handler and reaches the signal handler frame, then we need to read the back chain address from sigcontext saved on the stack, similarly the LR. As backchain at an offset 0 will be 0, because we will have a sigconext saved after the minimum stack size. So the correct backchain will be at an offset after minimum stack and the LR at an offset 8 will be of the signal millicode address. 2018-08-13Split size in regset section iteratorsAlan Hayward1-2/+2
In the existing code, when using the regset section iteration functions, the size parameter is used in different ways. With collect, size is used to create the buffer in which to write the regset. (see linux-tdep.c::linux_collect_regset_section_cb). With supply, size is used to confirm the existing regset is the correct size. If REGSET_VARIABLE_SIZE is set then the regset can be bigger than size. Effectively, size is the minimum possible size of the regset. (see corelow.c::get_core_register_section). There are currently no targets with both REGSET_VARIABLE_SIZE and a collect function. In SVE, a corefile can contain one of two formats after the header, both of which are different sizes. However, when writing a core file, we always want to write out the full bigger size. To allow support of collects for REGSET_VARIABLE_SIZE we need two sizes. GDB is currently not aware that wchar_t is a built-in type in C++ mode. This is usually not a problem because the debug info describes the type, so when you have a program loaded, you don't notice this. However, if you try expressions involving wchar_t before a program is loaded, gdb errors out: (gdb) p (wchar_t)-1 No symbol table is loaded. Use the "file" command. (gdb) p L"hello" No type named wchar_t. (gdb) ptype L"hello" No type named wchar_t. This commit teaches gdb about the type. After: (gdb) p (wchar_t)-1 $1 = -1 L'\xffffffff' (gdb) p L"hello" $2 = L"hello" (gdb) ptype L"hello" type = wchar_t [6] Unlike char16_t/char32_t, unfortunately, the underlying type of wchar_t is implementation dependent, both size and signness. So this requires adding a couple new gdbarch hooks. I grepped the GCC code base for WCHAR_TYPE and WCHAR_TYPE_SIZE, and it seems to me that the majority of the ABIs have a 4-byte signed wchar_t, so that's what I made the default for GDB too. Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case more often than not). The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc. Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time. Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't know. I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested. Here's the changelog entry, which was not too bad to make despite the size, thanks to David Malcom's script. 2015-03-07Split TRY_CATCH into TRY + CATCHPedro Alves1-3/+4
This patch splits the TRY_CATCH macro into three, so that we go from this: ~~~ volatile gdb_exception ex; TRY_CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR) { } if (ex.reason < 0) { } ~~~ to this: ~~~ TRY { } CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR) { } END_CATCH ~~~ Thus, we'll be getting rid of the local volatile exception object, and declaring the caught exception in the catch block. This allows reimplementing TRY/CATCH in terms of C++ exceptions when building in C++ mode, while still allowing to build GDB in C mode (using setjmp/longjmp), as a transition step. TBC, after this patch, is it _not_ valid to have code between the TRY and the CATCH blocks, like: TRY { } // some code here. CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR) { } END_CATCH Just like it isn't valid to do that with C++'s native try/catch. By switching to creating the exception object inside the CATCH block scope, we can get rid of all the explicitly allocated volatile exception objects all over the tree, and map the CATCH block more directly to C++'s catch blocks. The majority of the TRY_CATCH -> TRY+CATCH+END_CATCH conversion was done with a script, rerun from scratch at every rebase, no manual editing involved. After the mechanical conversion, a few places needed manual intervention, to fix preexisting cases where we were using the exception object outside of the TRY_CATCH block, and cases where we were using "else" after a 'if (ex.reason) < 0)' [a CATCH after this patch]. The result was folded into this patch so that GDB still builds at each incremental step. END_CATCH is necessary for two reasons: First, because we name the exception object in the CATCH block, which requires creating a scope, which in turn must be closed somewhere. Declaring the exception variable in the initializer field of a for block, like: #define CATCH(EXCEPTION, mask) \ for (struct gdb_exception EXCEPTION; \ exceptions_state_mc_catch (&EXCEPTION, MASK); \ EXCEPTION = exception_none) would avoid needing END_CATCH, but alas, in C mode, we build with C90, which doesn't allow mixed declarations and code. Second, because when TRY/CATCH are wired to real C++ try/catch, as long as we need to handle cleanup chains, even if there's no CATCH block that wants to catch the exception, we need for stop at every frame in the unwind chain and run cleanups, then rethrow. That will be done in END_CATCH. After we require C++, we'll still need TRY/CATCH/END_CATCH until cleanups are completely phased out -- TRY/CATCH in C++ mode will save/restore the current cleanup chain, like in C mode, and END_CATCH catches otherwise uncaugh exceptions, runs cleanups and rethrows, so that C++ cleanups and exceptions can coexist. The current code attempts to provide relocation support when debugging core files via the rs6000_xfer_partial method of the rs6000-nat target_ops vector. However, this target_ops vector does not get pushed on the target stack at all when debugging core files, thus bypassing completely that part of the code. Given the following code: float global_float = 0.0; void set_float (float f) { global_float = f; } GDB incorrectly calls set_float if the set_float function is marked as prototyped: (gdb) call set_float (5.0) (gdb) print global_float $1 = 2048 What happens, when the function is marked as prototyped, is that GDB finds that the argument is a float, casts the value given in the expression to a float, and then gives that float to ppc-aix/ ppc-lynx178's push_dummy_call gdbarch routine. The latter then blindly copies it as is in the first floating-point register, instead of making sure that it has the proper format first. gdb/ChangeLog: * rs6000-aix-tdep.c (rs6000_push_dummy_call): Convert floating point registers to register type before storing value. * rs6000-lynx178-tdep.c (rs6000_lynx178_push_dummy_call): Likewise.

On ppc-aix, type wchar_t is 2 bytes long, so override the default target-wide-charset (UTF-32) with UTF-16. This allows us to print wide characters correctly. gdb/ChangeLog: * rs6000-aix-tdep.c (rs6000_aix_auto_wide_charset): New function. (rs6000_aix_init_osabi): Set auto_wide_charset gdbarch method.
2012-10-19ppc-aix osabi sniffer: Turn test of bfd flavour into assertionJoel Brobecker1-4/+9
Due to the way this function is registers, we know that given bfd's flavour should always be bfd_target_xcoff_flavour, thus making the former test always true, which means that this function should always return GDB_OSABI_AIX, and never return GDB_OSABI_UNKNOWN. This patch also fixes a typo detected by Tom Tromey that caused the test itself to be completely ineffective. gdb/ChangeLog (by Tom Tromey and Joel Brobecker): * rs6000-aix-tdep.c (rs6000_aix_osabi_sniffer): Replace inneffective if condition by gdb assertion. Add function description comment.
