2024-05-17Remove gdb_stdtargerrTom Tromey1-2/+2
This patch removes gdb_stdtargerr. There doesn't seem to be a need for this -- it is always the same as stdtarg, and (I believe) has been for many years. Approved-By: Andrew Burgess <aburgess@redhat.com>
2024-04-23gdb: move a bunch of quit-related things to event-top.{c,h}Simon Marchi1-0/+1
Move some declarations related to the "quit" machinery from defs.h to event-top.h. Most of the definitions associated to these declarations are in event-top.c. The exceptions are `quit()` and `maybe_quit()`, that are defined in utils.c. For consistency, move these two definitions to event-top.c. Include "event-top.h" in many files that use these things. 2024-03-26gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: remove includes of early headersSimon Marchi1-1/+0
Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the `-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include them. Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find. Update the generation scripts where relevant. Change-Id: Ia026cff269c1b7ae7386dd3619bc9bb6a5332837 Approved-By: Pedro Alves <pedro@palves.net>
2024-01-12Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDBAndrew Burgess1-1/+1
This commit is the result of the following actions: - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to include 2024, - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the file, - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright date, - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've updated them this year to 2024. I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as you spot them.
2023-10-10gdb: remove target_gdbarchSimon Marchi1-1/+1
This function is just a wrapper around the current inferior's gdbarch. I find that having that wrapper just obscures where the arch is coming from, and that it's often used as "I don't know which arch to use so I'll use this magical target_gdbarch function that gets me an arch" when the arch should in fact come from something in the context (a thread, objfile, symbol, etc). I think that removing it and inlining `current_inferior ()->arch ()` everywhere will make it a bit clearer where that arch comes from and will trigger people into reflecting whether this is the right place to get the arch or not. This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script, which automated the update of the copyright year range for all source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include year 2023.
2022-12-15gdb: some int to bool conversion in remote-sim.cAndrew Burgess1-10/+10
Some obvious int to bool conversion in remote-sim.c, there should be no user visible changes after this commit.
2022-10-19internal_error: remove need to pass __FILE__/__LINE__Pedro Alves1-4/+2
Currently, every internal_error call must be passed __FILE__/__LINE__ explicitly, like: internal_error (__FILE__, __LINE__, "foo %d", var); The need to pass in explicit __FILE__/__LINE__ is there probably because the function predates widespread and portable variadic macros availability. We can use variadic macros nowadays, and in fact, we already use them in several places, including the related gdb_assert_not_reached. So this patch renames the internal_error function to something else, and then reimplements internal_error as a variadic macro that expands __FILE__/__LINE__ itself. The result is that we now should call internal_error like so: internal_error ("foo %d", var); Likewise for internal_warning. The patch adjusts all calls sites. 99% of the adjustments were done with a perl/sed script. The non-mechanical changes are in gdbsupport/errors.h, gdbsupport/gdb_assert.h, and gdb/gdbarch.py. 2022-07-28Rewrite registry.hTom Tromey1-1/+1
This rewrites registry.h, removing all the macros and replacing it with relatively ordinary template classes. The result is less code than the previous setup. It replaces large macros with a relatively straightforward C++ class, and now manages its own cleanup. The existing type-safe "key" class is replaced with the equivalent template class. This approach ended up requiring relatively few changes to the users of the registry code in gdb -- code using the key system just required a small change to the key's declaration. All existing users of the old C-like API are now converted to use the type-safe API. This mostly involved changing explicit deletion functions to be an operator() in a deleter class. The old "save/free" two-phase process is removed, and replaced with a single "free" phase. No existing code used both phases. The old "free" callbacks took a parameter for the enclosing container object. However, this wasn't truly needed and is removed here as well.
2022-03-29Unify gdb printf functionsTom Tromey1-42/+42
Now that filtered and unfiltered output can be treated identically, we can unify the printf family of functions. This is done under the name "gdb_printf". Most of this patch was written by script.

2022-03-29Unify vprintf functionsTom Tromey1-4/+4
Now that filtered and unfiltered output can be treated identically, we can unify the vprintf family of functions: vprintf_filtered, vprintf_unfiltered, vfprintf_filtered and vfprintf_unfiltered. (For the gdb_stdout variants, recall that only printf_unfiltered gets truly unfiltered output at this point.) This removes one such function and renames the remaining two to "gdb_vprintf". All callers are updated. Much of this patch was written by script.

2022-01-05Use filtered output in files_info implementationsTom Tromey1-2/+2
This changes the implementations of the target files_info method to use filtered output. This makes sense because the sole caller of this method is an ordinary command (info_program_command). This patch changes this command to use filtered output as well.

2021-10-22gdb: fix remote-sim.c buildSimon Marchi1-6/+3
Commit 183be222907a ("gdb, gdbserver: make target_waitstatus safe") broke the remote-sim.c build. In fact, it does some wrong changes, result of a bad sed invocation. Fix it by adjusting the code to the new target_waitstatus API. Change-Id: I3236ff7ef7681fc29215f68be210ff4263760e91
2021-10-21gdb, gdbserver: make target_waitstatus safeSimon Marchi1-2/+2
I stumbled on a bug caused by the fact that a code path read target_waitstatus::value::sig (expecting it to contain a gdb_signal value) while target_waitstatus::kind was TARGET_WAITKIND_FORKED. This meant that the active union field was in fact target_waitstatus::value::related_pid, and contained a ptid. The read signal value was therefore garbage, and that caused GDB to crash soon after. Or, since that GDB was built with ubsan, this nice error message: /home/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/linux-nat.c:1271:12: runtime error: load of value 2686365, which is not a valid value for type 'gdb_signal' Despite being a large-ish change, I think it would be nice to make target_waitstatus safe against that kind of bug. As already done elsewhere (e.g. dynamic_prop), validate that the type of value read from the union matches what is supposed to be the active field. - Make the kind and value of target_waitstatus private. - Make the kind initialized to TARGET_WAITKIND_IGNORE on target_waitstatus construction. This is what most users appear to do explicitly. - Add setters, one for each kind. Each setter takes as a parameter the data associated to that kind, if any. This makes it impossible to forget to attach the associated data. - Add getters, one for each associated data type. Each getter validates that the data type fetched by the user matches the wait status kind. - Change "integer" to "exit_status", "related_pid" to "child_ptid", just because that's more precise terminology. - Fix all users. That last point is semi-mechanical. There are a lot of obvious changes, but some less obvious ones. For example, it's not possible to set the kind at some point and the associated data later, as some users did. But in any case, the intent of the code should not change in this patch. This was tested on x86-64 Linux (unix, native-gdbserver and native-extended-gdbserver boards). It was built-tested on x86-64 FreeBSD, NetBSD, MinGW and macOS. The rest of the changes to native files was done as a best effort. If I forgot any place to update in these files, it should be easy to fix (unless the change happens to reveal an actual bug). 2021-10-04Fix remote-sim.c compilationTom Tromey1-3/+3
The change "make string-like set show commands use std::string variable" caused remote-sim.c to fail to build. The issue is that the code does: const std::string &sysroot = gdb_sysroot; if (is_target_filename (sysroot)) sysroot += strlen (TARGET_SYSROOT_PREFIX); ... which isn't valid. This patch changes this code to use a 'const char *' again, fixing the build.
2021-10-03gdb: make string-like set show commands use std::string variableSimon Marchi1-4/+3
String-like settings (var_string, var_filename, var_optional_filename, var_string_noescape) currently take a pointer to a `char *` storage variable (typically global) that holds the setting's value. I'd like to "mordernize" this by changing them to use an std::string for storage. An obvious reason is that string operations on std::string are often easier to write than with C strings. And they avoid having to do any manual memory management. Another interesting reason is that, with `char *`, nullptr and an empty string often both have the same meaning of "no value". String settings are initially nullptr (unless initialized otherwise). But when doing "set foo" (where `foo` is a string setting), the setting now points to an empty string. For example, solib_search_path is nullptr at startup, but points to an empty string after doing "set solib-search-path". This leads to some code that needs to check for both to check for "no value". Or some code that converts back and forth between NULL and "" when getting or setting the value. I find this very error-prone, because it is very easy to forget one or the other. With std::string, we at least know that the variable is not "NULL". There is only one way of representing an empty string setting, that is with an empty string. I was wondering whether the distinction between NULL and "" would be important for some setting, but it doesn't seem so. If that ever happens, it would be more C++-y and self-descriptive to use optional<string> anyway. Actually, there's one spot where this distinction mattered, it's in init_history, for the test gdb.base/gdbinit-history.exp. init_history sets the history filename to the default ".gdb_history" if it sees that the setting was never set - if history_filename is nullptr. If history_filename is an empty string, it means the setting was explicitly cleared, so it leaves it as-is. With the change to std::string, this distinction doesn't exist anymore. This can be fixed by moving the code that chooses a good default value for history_filename to _initialize_top. This is ran before -ex commands are processed, so an -ex command can then clear that value if needed (what gdb.base/gdbinit-history.exp tests). Another small improvement, in my opinion is that we can now easily give string parameters initial values, by simply initializing the global variables, instead of xstrdup-ing it in the _initialize function. In Python and Guile, when registering a string-like parameter, we allocate (with new) an std::string that is owned by the param_smob (in Guile) and the parmpy_object (in Python) objects. This patch started by changing all relevant add_setshow_* commands to take an `std::string *` instead of a `char **` and fixing everything that failed to build. That includes of course all string setting variable and their uses. string_option_def now uses an std::string also, because there's a connection between options and settings (see add_setshow_cmds_for_options). The add_path function in source.c is really complex and twisted, I'd rather not try to change it to work on an std::string right now. Instead, I added an overload that copies the std:string to a `char *` and back. This means more copying, but this is not used in a hot path at all, so I think it is acceptable. 2021-05-14sim: create header namespaceMike Frysinger1-2/+2
The gdb/callback.h & gdb/remote-sim.h headers have nothing to do with gdb and are really definitions for the libsim API under the sim/ tree. While gdb uses those headers as a client, it's not specific to it. So create a new sim/ namespace and move the headers there.
2021-03-24gdb: move all "current target" wrapper implementations to target.cSimon Marchi1-2/+2
The following patch removes the current_top_target function, replacing uses with `current_inferior ()->top_target ()`. This is a problem for uses in target.h, because they don't have access to the current_inferior function and the inferior structure: target.h can't include inferior.h, otherwise that would make a cyclic inclusion. Avoid this by moving all implementations of the wrappers that call target methods with the current target to target.c. Many of them are changed from a macro to a function, which is an improvement for readability and debuggability, IMO. target_shortname and target_longname were not function-like macros, so a few adjustments are needed. gdb/ChangeLog: * target.h (target_shortname): Change to function declaration. 2021-03-23gdb: remove unpush_target free functionSimon Marchi1-2/+2
unpush_target unpushes the passed-in target from the current inferior's target stack. Calling it is therefore an implicit dependency on the current global inferior. Remove that function and make the callers use the inferior::unpush_target method directly. This sometimes allows using the inferior from the context rather than the global current inferior. target_unpusher::operator() now needs to be implemented in target.c, otherwise target.h and inferior.h both need to include each other, and that wouldn't work. gdb/ChangeLog: * target.h (unpush_target): Remove, update all callers to use `inferior::unpush_target` instead. 2020-09-18Make target_wait options use enum flagsTom Tromey1-2/+3
This changes TARGET_WNOHANG to be a member of an enum, rather than a define, and also adds a DEF_ENUM_FLAGS_TYPE for this type. Then, it changes target_wait and the various target wait methods to use this type rather than "int". This didn't catch any bugs, but it seems like a decent cleanup nevertheless. I did not change deprecated_target_wait_hook, since that's only used out-of-tree (by Insight), and there didn't seem to be a need. I can't build some of these targets, so I modified them on a best-effort basis. I don't think this patch should go in before the release branch is made. gdb/ChangeLog 2020-09-18 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * windows-nat.c (struct windows_nat_target) <wait>: Update. 2020-02-07Make fputs_unfiltered use fputs_maybe_filteredIain Buclaw1-1/+1
This patch redefines fputs_unfiltered in utils.c, with new behavior to forward parameters to fputs_maybe_filtered. This makes fputs_unfiltered identical to fputs_filtered, except filtering is disabled. Some callers of fputs_unfiltered have been updated to use ui_file_puts where they were using other ui_file_* functions anyway for IO. This fixes the problem I saw with \032\032post-prompt annotation being flushed to stdout in the wrong order. 2020-02-05 Iain Buclaw <ibuclaw@gdcproject.org> PR gdb/25190: * gdb/remote-sim.c (gdb_os_write_stderr): Update. * gdb/remote.c (remote_console_output): Update. * gdb/ui-file.c (fputs_unfiltered): Rename to... 2020-02-07Make gdb_flush also flush the wrap bufferIain Buclaw1-2/+2
This changes gdb_flush to also flush the internal wrap buffer. 2020-02-04gdb/sim: Assert that the simulator ptid is not null_ptidAndrew Burgess1-0/+1
We assign the simulator inferior a fake ptid. If this ptid is ever set to null_ptid then we are going to run into problems - the simulator ptid is what we return from gdbsim_target::wait, and this in turn is used to look up the inferior data with a call to find_inferior_pid, which asserts the pid is not 0 (which it is in null_pid). This commit adds an assert that the simulator's fake pid is not null_ptid. There should be no user visible changes after this commit. gdb/ChangeLog: * remote-sim.c (sim_inferior_data::sim_inferior_data): Assert that we don't set the fake simulator ptid to the null_ptid. 2020-01-21gdb: remove uses of iterate_over_inferiors in remote-sim.cSimon Marchi1-50/+28

(get_sim_inferior_data): Remove use of iterate_over_inferiors, replace with range-based for. (gdbsim_interrupt_inferior): Remove. 2020-01-19sim: don't rely on inferior_ptid in gdbsim_target::waitSimon Marchi1-1/+1
When running a program with the simulator target, I get: /home/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/inferior.c:279: internal-error: inferior* find_inferior_pid(process_stratum_target*, int): Assertion `pid != 0' failed. This can be reproduced by building a GDB for --target=arm-none-gnueabi, and running with $ ./gdb -nx --data-directory=data-directory a.out -ex "target sim" -ex load -ex "b main" -ex r Where a.out is any program with a main. The problem is that gdbsim_target::wait assumes that inferior_ptid has the value of the thread it wants to report an event for. Actually, it's the target's responsibility to come up with the ptid of the thread the event is for. In the sim target, that ptid is stored in sim_inferior_data::remote_sim_ptid, so return that instead of inferior_ptid. ChangeLog: * remote-sim.c (gdbsim_target::wait): Return sim_data->remote_sim_ptid instead of inferior_ptid.
2020-01-13gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functionsSimon Marchi1-1/+2
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it warns for every _initialize function, for example: CXX dcache.o /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’: /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations] _initialize_dcache (void) ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations, which were removed by this commit: commit 481695ed5f6e0a8a9c9c50bfac1cdd2b3151e6c9 Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org> Date: Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700 Remove unnecessary function prototypes. I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy to use it. gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-fbsd-nat.c 2020-01-13gdb: adjust remote-sim.c to multi-targetSimon Marchi1-78/+71
The remote-sim.c file doesn't build since the main multi-target patch (5b6d1e4f, "Multi-target support"), this patch is an attempt to fix it. I have only build-tested it, so I'm not sure it runs fine, but it should get us close at least. I made these functions methods of the gdbsim_target, because they need to pass the target down to some GDB core functions, like find_inferior_ptid: - get_sim_inferior_data_by_ptid (renamed to get_inferior_data_by_ptid) - gdbsim_resume_inferior (renamed to resume_one_inferior) - gdbsim_close_inferior (renamed to close_one_inferior) In the last two, I changed iterate_over_inferiors to a range-based for, since that gives simpler code (no need to pass data through the void pointer). The next_pid variable, INITIAL_PID macro and sim_inferior_data structure are simply moved up in the file, above gdbsim_target. gdb/ChangeLog: * remote-sim.c (next_pid, INITIAL_PID, sim_inferior_data): Move up. (gdbsim_target) <get_inferior_data_by_ptid, resume_one_inferior, close_one_inferior>: New methods. (get_sim_inferior_data_by_ptid): Move to gdbsim_target, pass down target to find_inferior_pid. (gdbsim_target::fetch_registers, gdbsim_target::store_registers): Pass down target to find_inferior_ptid. (gdbsim_target::create_inferior): Pass down target to add_thread_silent. (gdbsim_close_inferior): Move to gdbsim_close_inferior, pass target down to find_inferior_ptid and switch_to_thread. (gdbsim_target::close): Update to call close_one_inferior. (struct resume_data): Remove. (gdbsim_resume_inferior): Move to gdbsim_target. Take arguments directly, rather than through a void pointer. (gdbsim_target::resume): Update to call resume_one_inferior.
2020-01-01Update copyright year range in all GDB files.Joel Brobecker1-1/+1
gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
2019-11-26Remove simulator_command declaration, make staticSimon Marchi1-3/+1
The simulator_command function is not used outside its file, so make it static. Remove the declaration, which is not needed and not even in sync with the definition. gdb/ChangeLog: * remote-sim.c (simulator_command): Make static, remove declaration. Change-Id: I40bd1e3662f849c4c9970443931ab9ee0ccccea1
2019-07-10Change remote-sim.c to use type-safe registryTom Tromey1-50/+29
This changes remote-sim.c to use the type-safe registry. 2019-07-10 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * remote-sim.c (struct sim_inferior_data): Add initializers, constructor, and destructor. (sim_inferior_data_key): Change type. Move lower. (check_for_duplicate_sim_descriptor): Update. (get_sim_inferior_data): Use new. Update. (~sim_inferior_data_cleanup): Rename from sim_inferior_data_cleanup. Simplify. (gdbsim_close_inferior, simulator_command) (sim_command_completer, _initialize_remote_sim): Update. (next_pid, INITIAL_PID): Move earlier.
2019-07-09Rename common to gdbsupportTom Tromey1-1/+1
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the top level. This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit more tractable. I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too much difficulty. Tested by the buildbot. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-07-09 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * contrib/ari/gdb_ari.sh: Change common to gdbsupport. * configure: Rebuild. * configure.ac: Change common to gdbsupport. * 2019-03-13Change pid_to_str to return std::stringTom Tromey1-4/+3
Currently the target pid_to_str method returns a const char *, so many implementations have a static buffer that they update. This patch changes these methods to return a std::string instead. I think this is cleaner and avoids possible gotchas when calling pid_to_str on different ptids in a single statement. (Though no such calls exist currently.) This also updates various helper functions, and the gdbarch pid_to_str methods. I also made a best effort to fix all the callers, but I can't build some of the *-nat.c files. 2019-01-01Update copyright year range in all GDB files.Joel Brobecker1-1/+1
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
2018-11-30Convert default_child_has_foo functions to process_stratum_target methodsPedro Alves1-9/+0
This patch converts the default_child_has_foo functions to process_stratum_target methods. This simplifies "regular" non-inf_child process_stratum targets, since they no longer have to override the target_ops::has_foo methods to call the default_child_foo functions. A couple targets need to override the new defaults (corelow and tracefiles), but it still seems like a good tradeoff, since those are expected to be little different (target doesn't run). gdb/ChangeLog: 2018-11-30 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * corelow.c (core_target) <has_all_memory, has_execution>: New overrides. * inf-child.c (inf_child_target::has_all_memory) (inf_child_target::has_memory, inf_child_target::has_stack) (inf_child_target::has_registers) (inf_child_target::has_execution): Delete. * inf-child.h (inf_child_target) <has_all_memory, has_memory, has_stack, has_registers, has_execution>: Delete. * process-stratum-target.c (process_stratum_target::has_all_memory) (process_stratum_target::has_memory) (process_stratum_target::has_stack) (process_stratum_target::has_registers) (process_stratum_target::has_execution): New. * process-stratum-target.h (process_stratum_target) <has_all_memory, has_memory, has_stack, has_registers, has_execution>: New method overrides. * ravenscar-thread.c (ravenscar_thread_target) <has_all_memory, has_memory, has_stack, has_registers, has_execution>: Delete. * remote-sim.c (gdbsim_target) <has_stack, has_registers, has_execution>: Delete. * remote.c (remote_target) <has_all_memory, has_memory, has_stack, has_registers, has_execution>: Delete. * target.c (default_child_has_all_memory) (default_child_has_memory, default_child_has_stack) (default_child_has_registers, default_child_has_execution): Delete. * target.h (default_child_has_all_memory) (default_child_has_memory, default_child_has_stack) (default_child_has_registers, default_child_has_execution): Delete. * tracefile.h (tracefile_target) <has_execution>: New override.

2018-11-22Per-inferior thread list, thread ranges/iterators, down with ALL_THREADS, etc.Pedro Alves1-3/+0
As preparation for multi-target, this patch makes each inferior have its own thread list. This isn't absolutely necessary for multi-target, but simplifies things. It originally stemmed from the desire to eliminate the init_thread_list calls sprinkled around, plus it makes it more efficient to iterate over threads of a given inferior (no need to always iterate over threads of all inferiors). We still need to iterate over threads of all inferiors in a number of places, which means we'd need adjust the ALL_THREADS / ALL_NON_EXITED_THREADS macros. However, naively tweaking those macros to have an extra for loop, like: #define ALL_THREADS (thr, inf) \ for (inf = inferior_list; inf; inf = inf->next) \ for (thr = inf->thread_list; thr; thr = thr->next) causes problems with code that does "break" or "continue" within the ALL_THREADS loop body. Plus, we need to declare the extra "inf" local variable in order to pass it as temporary variable to ALL_THREADS (etc.) It gets even trickier when we consider extending the macros to filter out threads matching a ptid_t and a target. The macros become tricker to read/write. Been there. An alternative (which was my next attempt), is to replace the ALL_THREADS etc. iteration style with for_each_all_threads, for_each_non_exited_threads, etc. functions which would take a callback as parameter, which would usually be passed a lambda. However, I did not find that satisfactory at all, because the resulting code ends up a little less natural / more noisy to read, write and debug/step-through (due to use of lambdas), and in many places where we use "continue;" to skip to the next thread now need to use "return;". (I ran into hard to debug bugs caused by a continue/return confusion.) I.e., before: ALL_NON_EXITED_THREADS (tp) { if (tp->not_what_I_want) continue; // do something } would turn into: for_each_non_exited_thread ([&] (thread_info *tp) { if (tp->not_what_I_want) return; // do something }); Lastly, the solution I settled with was to replace the ALL_THREADS / ALL_NON_EXITED_THREADS / ALL_INFERIORS macros with (C++20-like) ranges and iterators, such that you can instead naturaly iterate over threads/inferiors using range-for, like e.g,.: // all threads, including THREAD_EXITED threads. for (thread_info *tp : all_threads ()) { .... } // all non-exited threads. for (thread_info *tp : all_non_exited_threads ()) { .... } // all non-exited threads of INF inferior. for (thread_info *tp : inf->non_exited_threads ()) { .... } The all_non_exited_threads() function takes an optional filter ptid_t as parameter, which is quite convenient when we need to iterate over threads matching that filter. See e.g., how the set_executing/set_stop_requested/finish_thread_state etc. functions in thread.c end up being simplified. Most of the patch thus is about adding the infrustructure for allowing the above. Later on when we get to actual multi-target, these functions/ranges/iterators will gain a "target_ops *" parameter so that e.g., we can iterate over all threads of a given target that match a given filter ptid_t. The only entry points users needs to be aware of are the all_threads/all_non_exited_threads etc. functions seen above. Thus, those functions are declared in gdbthread.h/inferior.h. The actual iterators/ranges are mainly "internals" and thus are put out of view in the new thread-iter.h/thread-iter.c/inferior-iter.h files. That keeps the gdbthread.h/inferior.h headers quite a bit more readable. A common/safe-iterator.h header is added which adds a template that can be used to build "safe" iterators, which are forward iterators that can be used to replace the ALL_THREADS_SAFE macro and other instances of the same idiom in future. There's a little bit of shuffling of code between gdbthread.h/thread.c/inferior.h in the patch. That is necessary in order to avoid circular dependencies between the gdbthread.h/inferior.h headers. As for the init_thread_list calls sprinkled around, they're all eliminated by this patch, and a new, central call is added to inferior_appeared. Note how also related to that, there's a call to init_wait_for_inferior in remote.c that is eliminated. init_wait_for_inferior is currently responsible for discarding skipped inline frames, which had to be moved elsewhere. Given that nowadays we always have a thread even for single-threaded processes, the natural place is to delete a frame's inline frame info when we delete the thread. I.e., from clear_thread_inferior_resources. gdb/ChangeLog: 2018-11-22 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * Makefile.in (COMMON_SFILES): Add thread-iter.c. * breakpoint.c (breakpoints_should_be_inserted_now): Replace ALL_NON_EXITED_THREADS with all_non_exited_threads.
