I went through most of the spots that include readline.h and, when
appropriate, either removed the include or changed it to include
tilde.h.
Note that remote-sim.c and bsd-kvm.c could probably include tilde.h
instead, but I did not change these. I think I can't build the
latter, and I didn't want to set up a sim build for the former.
Tested by rebuilding.

Add a new command 'info modules' that lists all of the modules GDB
knows about from the debug information.
A module is a debugging entity in the DWARF defined with
DW_TAG_module, currently Fortran is known to use this tag for its
modules. I'm not aware of any other language that currently makes use
of DW_TAG_module.
The output style is similar to the 'info type' output:
(gdb) info modules
All defined modules:
File info-types.f90:
16: mod1
24: mod2
(gdb)
Where the user is told the file the module is defined in and, on the
left hand side, the line number at which the module is defined along
with the name of the module.
This patch is a new implementation of an idea originally worked on by
Mark O'Connor, Chris January, David Lecomber, and Xavier Oro from ARM.

Just some code cleanup. This change has a few benefits:
- Shorter argument list in the functions
- If the caller needs to calculate the string, they no longer
need to explicitly call strlen
- It is easy to pass std::string to this (done in one place
currently)
This also updates a couple of places that were passing 0/1 to
a bool parameter.

I found that these tests:
make check-gdb RUNTESTFLAGS="--target_board=cc-with-gdb-index gdb.base/maint.exp"
make check-gdb RUNTESTFLAGS="--target_board=cc-with-debug-names gdb.base/maint.exp"
were causing GDB to segfault. It turns out that this test runs this
command:
maint print psymbols -pc main /path/to/some/file
which tries to lookup the partial_symtab for 'main'. The problem is
that there is no partial_symtab for 'main' as we are using the
.gdb_index or .debug_names instead of partial_symtabs.
What happens is that maintenance_print_symbols calls
find_pc_sect_psymtab, which looks for the partial_symtab in the
objfile's objfile->partial_symtabs->psymtabs_addrmap.
This is a problem because when we are using the indexes
psymtabs_addrmap is reused to hold things other than partial_symtabs,
this can be seen in dwarf2read.c in create_addrmap_from_index and
create_addrmap_from_aranges. If we then lookup in psymtabs_addrmap we
end up returning a pointer to something that isn't really a
partial_symtab, after which everything goes wrong.
Initially I simply added a check at the start of find_pc_sect_psymtab
that the objfile had some partial_symtabs, like:
if (objfile->partial_symtabs->psymtabs == NULL)
return NULL;
Figuring that if there were no partial_symtabs at all then this
function should always return NULL, however, this caused a failure in
the test gdb.python/py-event.exp which I didn't dig into too deeply,
but seems to be that in this tests there are initially no psymtabs,
but the second part of find_pc_sect_psymtab does manage to read some
in from somewhere, with the check I added the test fails as we
returned NULL here and this caused GDB to load in the full symtabs
earlier than was expected.
Instead I chose to guard only the access to psymtabs_addrmap with a
check that the function has some psymtabs. This allows my original
tests to pass, and the py-event.exp test to pass too.
Now, a good argument can be made that we simply should never call
find_pc_sect_psymtab on an objfile that is using indexes instead of
partial_symtabs. I did consider this approach, we could easily add an
assert into find_pc_sect_psymtab that if we find a partial_symtab in
psymtabs_addrmap then the psymtabs pointer must be non-null. The
responsibility would then be on the user of find_pc_sect_psymtab to
ensure that the objfile being checked is suitable. In the end I
didn't take this approach as the check in find_pc_sect_psymtab is
cheap and this ensures that any future miss-uses of the function will
not cause problems.
I also extended the comment on psymtabs_addrmap to indicate that it
holds more than just partial_symtabs as this was not at all clear from
the original comment, and caused me some confusion when I was
initially debugging this problem.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* psymtab.c (find_pc_sect_psymtab): Move baseaddr local into more
inner scope, add check that the objfile has psymtabs before
checking psymtabs_addrmap.
* psymtab.h (psymtab_storage) <psymtabs_addrmap>: Extend comment.

This parameter is really a boolean, so change the type accordingly
and update the callers.
This is for symbol_set_names, add_psymbol_to_bcache, and
add_psymbol_to_list.
minimal_symbol_reader::record_full was already passing a bool
to symbol_set_names.

The only two values valid to pass to the block_index parameter of
quick_symbol_functions::lookup_symbol are GLOBAL_BLOCK and STATIC_BLOCK,
part of enum block_enum. Change the type of that parameter to
block_enum.
Change also the block_index field of dw2_symtab_iterator in the same
way.. This makes it consistent with dw2_debug_names_iterator, which
already uses block_enum for its block_index field.
This is a follow-up to this thread:

Adds an utility function to make it shorter to write the common case
of wrapping an xstrdup with a unique_xmalloc_ptr, and uses it
throughout.
Note: I tried to put this in common/common-utils.h near skip_spaces,
etc. but that is included in common/common-defs.h before
common/gdb_unique_ptr.h is included, so it would fail to compile
because gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr isn't defined at that point yet. I
tried moving the gdb_unique_ptr.h inclusion before common-utils.h, but
that doesn't work because gdb_unique_ptr.h depends on common-utils.h
for xfree.

This patch partly reverts commit 8a6d42345 ("Change representation of
psymbol to flush out accessors"); specifically, it changes
partial_symbol to no longer derive from general_symbol_info.
The basic problem here is that the bcache compares objects bitwise,
and this change made it less likely that the relevant fields in the
psymbol would be fully initialized. This could be seen by running a
test under valgrind on the Fedora-i686 buildbot.
I considered a simpler patch, namely just zeroing the psymbol's
"value" field in add_psymbol_to_bcache. However, it wasn't clear to
me that this memset could not then be optimized away by the compiler.
Regression tested by the buildbot. I think this should go in 8.3 as
well.

Previously, the psymtab obstack was just a pointer to the objfile
obstack. This patch changes psymtabs to use their own obstack,
instead. A gdb::optional is used to avoid unnecessary allocation when
the obstack is not needed.
After this patch, the psymtab code lifetime model is that, in the core
psymtab code, objects allocated on the psymtab obstack may point to
other such objects, or to objects on the per-BFD obstack -- but never
to the objfile obstack.
Note however that this invariant is only obeyed the core psymtab code,
and even there not quite fully: there is still a link from the psymtab
to the full symtab.
Symbol readers are free to work however they like; and in particular,
even after this patch, in practice all symbol readers violate this
invariant via the read_symtab_private field.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-01-10 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* objfiles.h (objfile::reset_psymtabs): Update.
* objfiles.c (objfile::objfile): Update.
* psymtab.h (psymtab_storage::obstack): Update.
(psymtab_storage::m_obstack): Use gdb::optional.
(class psymtab_storage): Update comment. Remove objfile
parameter.
* psymtab.c (psymtab_storage::psymtab_storage): Update.
|
|
This adds a new psymtab allocation method to psymtab_storage and
changes the free_psymtabs member to be private. While not strictly
necessary, this seems like a decent cleanup, and also makes it simpler
to move psymtabs off of obstacks entirely, should that prove
desirable.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-01-10 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* psymtab.h (psymtab_storage::allocate_psymtab): New method.
<free_psymtabs>: Now private.
* psymtab.c (psymtab_storage::allocate_psymtab): Implement.
(allocate_psymtab): Use new method.
|
|
This moves a couple more psymtab-related allocations to the psymtab
obstack.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-01-10 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* psymtab.c (add_psymbol_to_bcache): Pass psymtab obstack to
PSYMBOL_SET_LANGUAGE.
(allocate_psymtab): Allocate psymtab on the psymtab obstack.
|
|
After this patch, the psymtab address map will now be allocated on the
psymtab obstack rather than the objfile obstack. This also changes
the psymtab storage object to make the obstack private; this will be
used later.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-01-10 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* psymtab.h (psymtab_storage::obstack): New method.
<m_obstack>: Rename from obstack; now private.
* psymtab.c (psymtab_storage): Update.
* dwarf2read.c (create_addrmap_from_index)
(create_addrmap_from_aranges, dwarf2_build_psymtabs_hard):
Update.
|
|
This introduces a new psymtab_storage class, which holds all
psymbol-related objects that are independent of the objfile. (This
latter contraint explains why psymbol_map was not moved; though this
could still be done with some work.)
This patch does not yet change where psymtab allocation is done --
that comes later. This just wraps everything in a single object to
make further transformations simpler.
Note that a shared_ptr is used to link from the objfile to the
psymtab_storage object. The end goal here is to allow a given symbol
reader to simply attach to the psymtab_storage object to the BFD, then
reuse it in later invocations; shared_ptr makes this simple to reason
about.

This changes symbol_set_names to take an objfile_per_bfd_storage

This changes add_psymbol_to_list to use an enum, rather than a pointer
to a vector, to decide where to put the new symbol. This reduces the
number of direct references to the static_psymbols and global_psymbols

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.
gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

This is just to make sure one of the parameters doesn't end past
the 80 characters limit. And while at it, since all parameters were

This patch is another attempt to fix PR cli/19551. Unlike my previous
attempt, it doesn't print progress. Instead, it just changes some
messages and adds newlines to make the output a bit nicer.
It also removes the "done." text that was previously emitted. The
idea here is that it is obvious when gdb is done reading debug info,
as it starts then doing something else; and that while this message
did not provide much benefit to users, it did make it harder to make
the output clean.
After this change the output from "./gdb -iex 'set complaint 1' -nx ./gdb"
reads:
Reading symbols from ./gdb...

While working on this series, I found some unfiltered prints that
didn't make sense -- many things, like complaints, are filtered, while
their context (in this case the "Reading symbols ..." messages) may
not be.
This patch changes some spots in symbol reading to use filtered
prints. I think this is preferable overall; in fact I'd go farther
and say that unfiltered printing should just be removed.
One of these spots was not strictly related (the change to
dump_psymtab), but I left it in partly because it makes psymtab.c
"unfiltered-clean", and partly because it is an example of filtered
and unfiltered printing being mixed in the same function.

This patch finally makes partial symbols and partial symtabs
independent of the program space.
Specifically:
It changes add_psymbol_to_list to accept a section index, and changes
the psymbol readers to pass this. At the same time it removes the
code to add the objfile's section offset to the psymbol.
It adds an objfile argument to the psymtab textlow and texthigh
accessors and changes some code to use the raw variants instead.
It removes the "relocate" method from struct quick_symbol_functions,
as it is no longer needed any more.
It changes partial_symbol::address so that the relevant offset is now
applied at the point of use.

This introduces accessors for the partial symbol table textlow and
texthigh fields. This lets us later arrange to relocate these values
at their point of use.
I did this conversion by renaming the fields. I didn't rename the
fields back afterward, thinking that on the off chance that someone
has a patch touching this area, then a merge would helpfully break
their compile.
I looked at making the fields private, but this interferes with the
memset in allocate_psymtab, and I didn't want to chase this down.
This conversion can be done later if need be.

This introduces a partial_symbol::address method. This method takes
an objfile argument. This is necessary so that we can later relocate
a partial symbol at its point of use. It also adds an accessor to
compute the unrelocated value; and a method to be used for setting the
field.
Note that the new method doesn't actually perform any relocation yet.
That will come in a subsequent patch. However, the comments are
written to reflect the intended, rather than the temporary, semantics.

This is the psymbol analog to the patch to change the representation
of minimal symbols:
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2013-10/msg00524.html
It has the same rationale: namely, that we're going to change the code
to apply psymbol offsets at runtime. This will be done by adding an
argument to the SYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS macro -- but since we can't
convert all the symbol types at once, we need a new approach.
Because gdb now is in C++, this patch changes partial_symbol to
inherit from general_symbol_info, rather than renaming the field.
This simplifies code in some places.
Also, as noted before, these macros implement a kind of "phony
polymorphism" that is not actually useful in practice; so this patch
removes the macros in favor of simply referring directly to members.
In a few cases -- obj_section in this patch and the symbol address in
the future -- methods will be used instead.
Note that this removes the blanket memset from add_psymbol_to_bcache.
This hasn't really been needed since bcache was modified to allow
holes in objects and since psymtab took advantage of that. This
deletion was required due to changing partial_symbol to derive from
general_symbol_info.

wrote:

Consider the following code which first declares a tagged type (the
equivalent of a class in Ada), and then a procedure which takes a
pointer (access) to this type's 'Class.
package Pck is
type Top_T is tagged record
N : Integer := 1;
end record;
procedure Inspect (Obj: access Top_T'Class);
end Pck;
Putting a breakpoint in that procedure and then running to it triggers
an internal error:
(gdb) break inspect
(gdb) continue
Breakpoint 1, pck.inspect (obj=0x63e010
/[...]/gdb/stack.c:621: internal-error: void print_frame_args(symbol*, frame_info*, int, ui_file*): Assertion `nsym != NULL' failed.
What's special about this subprogram is that it takes an access to
what we call a 'Class type, and for implementation reasons, the
compiler adds an extra argument named "objL". If you are curious why,
it allows the compiler for perform dynamic accessibility checks that
are mandated by the language.
If we look at the location where we get the internal error (in
stack.c), we find that we are looping over the symbol of each
parameter, and for each parameter, we do:
/* We have to look up the symbol because arguments can have
two entries (one a parameter, one a local) and the one we
want is the local, which lookup_symbol will find for us.
[...]
nsym = lookup_symbol (SYMBOL_LINKAGE_NAME (sym),
b, VAR_DOMAIN, NULL).symbol;
gdb_assert (nsym != NULL);
The lookup_symbol goes through the lookup structure, which means the
symbol's linkage name ("objL") gets transformed into a
lookup_name_info object (in block_lookup_symbol), before it gets fed
to the block symbol dictionary iterators. This, in turn, triggers the
symbol matching by comparing the "lookup" name which, for Ada, means
among other things, lowercasing the given name to "objl". It is this
transformation that causes the lookup find no matches, and therefore
trip this assertion.
Going back to the "offending" call to lookup_symbol in stack.c, what
we are trying to do, here, is do a lookup by linkage name. So, I
think what we mean to be doing is a completely literal symbol lookup,
so maybe not even strcmp_iw, but actually just plain strcmp???
In the past, in practice, you could get that effect by doing a lookup
using the C language. But that doesn't work, because we still end up
somehow using Ada's lookup_name routine which transforms "objL".
So, ideally, as I hinted before, I think what we need is a way to
perform a literal lookup so that searches by linkage names like the
above can be performed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This commit fixes the problem by implementing something similar to
Joel's literal idea, but with some important differences.
I considered adding a symbol_name_match_type::LINKAGE and supporting
searching by linkage name for any language, but the problem with that
is that the dictionaries only work with SYMBOL_SEARCH_NAME, because
that's what is used for hashing. We'd need separate dictionaries for
hashed linkage names.
So with the current symbol tables infrastructure, it's not literal
linkage names that we want to pass down, but instead literal _search_
names (SYMBOL_SEARCH_NAME, etc.).
However, psymbols have no overload/function parameter info in C++, so
a straight strcmp doesn't work properly for C++ name matching.
So what we do is be a little less aggressive then and add a new
symbol_name_match_type::SEARCH_SYMBOL instead that takes as input a
non-user-input search symbol, and then we skip any decoding/demangling
steps and make:
- Ada treat that as a verbatim match,
- other languages treat it as symbol_name_match_type::FULL.
This also fixes the new '"maint check-psymtabs" for Ada' testcase for
me (gdb.ada/maint_with_ada.exp). I've not removed the kfail yet
because Joel still sees that testcase failing with this patch.
That'll be fixed in follow up patches.
In Rust, virtual tables work a bit differently than they do in C++. In
C++, as you know, they are connected to a particular class hierarchy.
Rust, instead, can generate a virtual table for potentially any type --
in fact, one such virtual table for each trait (a trait is similar to an
abstract class or to a Java interface) that a type implements.
Objects that are referenced via a trait can't currently be inspected by
gdb. This patch implements the Rust equivalent of "set print object".
gdb relies heavily on the C++ ABI to decode virtual tables; primarily to
make "set print object" work; but also "info vtbl". However, Rust does
not currently have a specified ABI, so this approach seems unwise to
emulate.
Instead, I've changed the Rust compiler to emit some DWARF that
describes trait objects (previously their internal structure was
opaque), vtables (currently just a size -- but I hope to expand this in
the future), and the concrete type for which a vtable was emitted.
The concrete type is expressed as a DW_AT_containing_type on the
vtable's type. This is a small extension to DWARF.
This patch adds a new entry to quick_symbol_functions to return the
symtab that holds a data address. Previously there was no way in gdb to
look up a full (only minimal) non-text symbol by address. The psymbol
implementation of this method works by lazily filling in a map that is
added to the objfile. This avoids slowing down psymbol reading for a
feature that is likely to not be used too frequently.
I did not update .gdb_index. My thinking here is that the DWARF 5
indices will obsolete .gdb_index soon-ish, meaning that adding a new
feature to them is probably wasted work. If necessary I can update the
DWARF 5 index code when it lands in gdb.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 25.
This patch simplifies the psymbol_hash function, by changing it not to
examine the contents of the symbol's name. This change just mirrors
what psymbol_compare already does -- it is checking for name equality,
which is ok because symbol names are interned in symbol_set_names.
This change speeds up psymbol reading. "gdb -nx -batch gdb"
previously took ~1.8 seconds on my machine, and with this patch it now
takes ~1.7 seconds.
This is too naive. Consider:
ns_overload2_test::([TAB]
We'd want to complete that to:
ns_overload2_test::(anonymous namespace)::struct_overload2_test
Or:
b (anonymous namespace)::[TAB]
That currently completes to:
b (anonymous namespace)
Which is obviously broken. This patch makes that work.
Also, the current compare_symbol_name hack means that while this
works:
"b function([TAB]" -> "b function()"
This does not:
"b function ([TAB]"
This patch fixes that. Whitespace "ignoring" now Just Works, i.e.,
assuming a symbol named "function(int, long)", this:
b function ( int , lon[TAB]
completes to:
b function ( int , long)
To address all of this, this patch builds on top of the rest of the
series, and pushes the responsibility of stripping parameters from a
lookup name to the new lookup_name_info object, where we can apply
per-language rules. Also note that we now only make a version of the
lookup name with parameters stripped out where it's actually required
to do that, in the psymtab and GDB index code.
For C++, the right way to strip parameters is with "cp_remove_params",
which uses a real parser (cp-name-parser.y) to split the name into a
component tree and then discards parameters.
The trouble for completion is that in that case we have an incomplete
name, like "foo::func(int" and thus cp_remove_params throws an error.
This patch sorts that by adding a cp_remove_params_if_any variant of
cp_remove_params that tries removing characters from the end of the
string until cp_remove_params works. So cp_remove_params_if_any
behaves like this:
With a complete name:
"foo::func(int)" => foo::func(int) # cp_remove_params_1 succeeds the first time.
With an incomplete name:
"foo::func(int" => NULL # cp_remove_params fails the first time.
"foo::func(in" => NULL # and again...
"foo::func(i" => NULL # and again...
"foo::func(" => NULL # and again...
"foo::func" => "foo::func" # success!
Note that even if this approach removes significant rightmost
characters, it's still OK, because this parameter stripping is only
necessary for psymtabs and gdb index, where we're determining whether
to expand a symbol table. Say cp_remove_params_if_any returned
"foo::" above for "foo::func(int". That'd cause us to expand more
symtabs than ideal (because we'd expand all symtabs with symbols that
start with "foo::", not just "foo::func"), but then when we actually
look for completion matches, we'd still use the original lookup name,
with parameter information ["foo::func(int"], and thus we'll return no
false positive to the user. Whether the stripping works as intended
and doesn't strip too much is thus covered by a unit test instead of a
testsuite test.
The "if_any" part of the name refers to the fact that while
cp_remove_params returns NULL if the input name has no parameters in
the first place, like:
"foo::func" => NULL # cp_remove_params
cp_remove_params_if_any still returns the function name:
"foo::func" => "foo::func" # cp_remove_params_if_any
