2014-02-26change minsym representationTom Tromey1-8/+8
In a later patch we're going to change the minimal symbol address calculation to apply section offsets at the point of use. To make it simpler to catch potential problem spots, this patch changes the representation of minimal symbols and introduces new minimal-symbol-specific variants of the various accessors. This is necessary because it would be excessively ambitious to try to convert all the symbol types at once. 2014-02-26introduce minimal_symbol_upper_boundTom Tromey1-9/+7
This introduces minimal_symbol_upper_bound and changes various bits of code to use it. Since this function is intimately tied to the implementation of minimal symbol tables, I believe it belongs in minsyms.c. The new function is extracted from find_pc_partial_function_gnu_ifunc. Upstream GCC's new pass '-fisolate-erroneous-paths' may introduce traps at places where GCC has determined undefined behavior, e.g. when passing a NULL pointer to a function that defines this argument as __attribute__(__nonnull__(...)). In particular this applies to uniquify_strings(), because it invokes qsort() with NULL when the 'strings' vector is empty. The purpose of this patch is to better support renamings in the "info locals" command. Consider ... procedure Foo is GV : Integer renames Pck.Global_Variable; begin Increment (GV); -- STOP end Foo; ... Pck.Global_Variable is just an integer. After having stopped at the "STOP" line, "info locals" yields: (gdb) info locals gv = <error reading variable gv (Cannot access memory at address 0xffffffffffffffff)> In reality, two things are happening: (1) Variable "GV" does not exist, which is normal, since there is "GV" the renaming of another variable; (2) But to allow the user access to that renaming the same way the code has, the compiler produces an artificial variable whose name encodes the renaming: gv___XR_pck__global_variable___XE For practical reasons, the artificial variable itself is given irrelevant types and addresses. But the "info locals" command does not act as if it was a short-cut of "foreach VAR in locals, print VAR". Instead it gets the value of each VAR directly, which does not work in this case, since the variable is artificial and needs to be decoded first. This patch makes the "read_var_value" routine language-specific. The old implementation of "read_var_value" gets renamed to "default_read_var_value" and all languages now use it (unchanged behavior), except for Ada. In Ada, the new function ada_read_var_value checks if we have a renaming, and if so, evaluates its value, or else defers to default_read_var_value. gdb/ChangeLog: * language.h (struct language_defn): New "method" la_read_var_value. * findvar.c: #include "language.h". 2010-04-19gdb: objc-lang: check symbol name before accessing memoryMike Frysinger1-8/+11
The current ObjC logic will check both the symbol name and the target address space when trying to locate an appropriate selector. The problem is that first the target address space is checked before the symbol name. This may lead to a lot of unnecessary host<->target transactions when dealing with a non-OjbC target that does use function descriptors to describe functions as every symbol will have its FD read just to have the result thrown away with non-matching symbol names. It also may lead to problems when a non-FD symbol is found that points near the end of the address space as the target will throw up a memory_error(). One such example are symbols that are not functions, smaller than a FD, and are the last valid location. Obviously treating it as a larger data struct can cause memory overflows. So to speed things up and not screw over such targets, check the symbol name (which we already have locally) first before attempting to read the function's descriptor.
