2017-04-22Use ui_out_emit_listTom Tromey1-11/+3
This changes some spots to use ui_out_emit_list. This only touches "easy" cases, where the cleanup was used in a block-structured way. There's also one more use of ui_out_emit_tuple in here. 2017-02-02Eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete / make ui_file a class hierarchyPedro Alves1-9/+8
This patch starts from the desire to eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete, but then goes beyond. It makes ui_file & friends a real C++ class hierarchy, and switches temporary ui_file-like objects to stack-based allocation. - mem_fileopen -> string_file mem_fileopen is replaced with a new string_file class that is treated as a value class created on the stack. This alone eliminates most make_cleanup_ui_file_delete calls, and, simplifies code a whole lot (diffstat shows around 1k loc dropped.) string_file's internal buffer is a std::string, thus the "string" in the name. This simplifies the implementation much, compared to mem_fileopen, which managed growing its internal buffer manually. - ui_file_as_string, ui_file_strdup, ui_file_obsavestring all gone The new string_file class has a string() method that provides direct writable access to the internal std::string buffer. This replaced ui_file_as_string, which forced a copy of the same data the stream had inside. With direct access via a writable reference, we can instead move the string out of the string_stream, avoiding deep string copying. Related, ui_file_xstrdup calls are replaced with xstrdup'ping the stream's string, and ui_file_obsavestring is replaced by obstack_copy0. With all those out of the way, getting rid of the weird ui_file_put mechanism was possible. - New ui_file::printf, ui_file::puts, etc. methods These simplify / clarify client code. I considered splitting client-code changes, like these, e.g.: - stb = mem_fileopen (); - fprintf_unfiltered (stb, "%s%s%s", - _("The valid values are:\n"), - regdesc, - _("The default is \"std\".")); + string_file stb; + stb.printf ("%s%s%s", + _("The valid values are:\n"), + regdesc, + _("The default is \"std\".")); In two steps, with the first step leaving fprintf_unfiltered (etc.) calls in place, and only afterwards do a pass to change all those to call stb.printf etc.. I didn't do that split, because (when I tried), it turned out to be pointless make-work: the first pass would have to touch the fprintf_unfiltered line anyway, to replace "stb" with "&stb". - gdb_fopen replaced with stack-based objects This avoids the need for cleanups or unique_ptr's. I.e., this: struct ui_file *file = gdb_fopen (filename, "w"); if (filename == NULL) perror_with_name (filename); cleanups = make_cleanup_ui_file_delete (file); // use file. do_cleanups (cleanups); is replaced with this: stdio_file file; if (!file.open (filename, "w")) perror_with_name (filename); // use file. - odd contorsions in null_file_write / null_file_fputs around when to call to_fputs / to_write eliminated. - Global null_stream object A few places that were allocating a ui_file in order to print to "nowhere" are adjusted to instead refer to a new 'null_stream' global stream. - TUI's tui_sfileopen eliminated. TUI's ui_file much simplified The TUI's ui_file was serving a dual purpose. It supported being used as string buffer, and supported being backed by a stdio FILE. The string buffer part is gone, replaced by using of string_file. The 'FILE *' support is now much simplified, by making the TUI's ui_file inherit from stdio_file. gdb/ChangeLog: 2017-02-02 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * ada-lang.c (type_as_string): Use string_file. * ada-valprint.c (ada_print_floating): Use string_file. * ada-varobj.c (ada_varobj_scalar_image) (ada_varobj_get_value_image): Use string_file. * aix-thread.c (aix_thread_extra_thread_info): Use string_file. * arm-tdep.c (_initialize_arm_tdep): Use string_printf. * breakpoint.c (update_inserted_breakpoint_locations) (insert_breakpoint_locations, reattach_breakpoints) (print_breakpoint_location, print_one_detail_ranged_breakpoint) (print_it_watchpoint): Use string_file. 2017-01-01update copyright year range in GDB filesJoel Brobecker1-1/+1
This applies the second part of GDB's End of Year Procedure, which updates the copyright year range in all of GDB's files. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
2016-12-22Class-ify ui_outSimon Marchi1-6/+6
This patch finalizes the C++ conversion of the ui-out subsystem, by turning the ui_out and ui_out_impl structures into a single class hierarchy. ui_out functions are turned into virtual methods of that new class, so as a result there are a lot of call sites to update. In the previous version of the patchset, there were separate ui_out and ui_out_impl classes, but it wasn't really useful and added boilerplate. In this version there is simply an ui_out base class that is extended for CLI, TUI and MI. It's a bit hard to maintain a ChangeLog for such a big patch, I did my best but I'm sure there are some missing or outdated info in there... gdb/ChangeLog: * ui-out.h (ui_out_begin, ui_out_end, ui_out_table_header, ui_out_table_body, ui_out_field_int, ui_out_field_fmt_int, ui_out_field_core_addr, ui_out_field_string, ui_out_field_stream, ui_out_field_fmt, ui_out_field_skip, ui_out_spaces, ui_out_text, ui_out_message, ui_out_wrap_hint, ui_out_flush, ui_out_test_flags, ui_out_query_field, ui_out_is_mi_like_p, ui_out_redirect): Remove, replace with a method in class ui_out. 2015-08-01Replace the block_found global with explicit data-flowPierre-Marie de Rodat1-1/+1
As Pedro suggested on gdb-patches@ (see https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2015-05/msg00714.html), this change makes symbol lookup functions return a structure that includes both the symbol found and the block in which it was found. This makes it possible to get rid of the block_found global variable and thus makes block hunting explicit. gdb/ * ada-exp.y (write_object_renaming): Replace struct ada_symbol_info with struct block_symbol. 2015-07-31Mostly trivial enum fixesSimon Marchi1-2/+2
This is a patch I extracted from Pedro's C++ branch. It contains the most trivial enum fixes, where an integer type/value was used instead of the appropriate enum type/value. It fixes many C++ errors, since in C++ you can't mix integers and enums implicitely. Regardless of the C++ conversion, I think this is a good cleanup to make use of the appropriate enum types. 2015-03-07Split TRY_CATCH into TRY + CATCHPedro Alves1-7/+10
This patch splits the TRY_CATCH macro into three, so that we go from this: ~~~ volatile gdb_exception ex; TRY_CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR) { } if (ex.reason < 0) { } ~~~ to this: ~~~ TRY { } CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR) { } END_CATCH ~~~ Thus, we'll be getting rid of the local volatile exception object, and declaring the caught exception in the catch block. This allows reimplementing TRY/CATCH in terms of C++ exceptions when building in C++ mode, while still allowing to build GDB in C mode (using setjmp/longjmp), as a transition step. TBC, after this patch, is it _not_ valid to have code between the TRY and the CATCH blocks, like: TRY { } // some code here. CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR) { } END_CATCH Just like it isn't valid to do that with C++'s native try/catch. By switching to creating the exception object inside the CATCH block scope, we can get rid of all the explicitly allocated volatile exception objects all over the tree, and map the CATCH block more directly to C++'s catch blocks. The majority of the TRY_CATCH -> TRY+CATCH+END_CATCH conversion was done with a script, rerun from scratch at every rebase, no manual editing involved. After the mechanical conversion, a few places needed manual intervention, to fix preexisting cases where we were using the exception object outside of the TRY_CATCH block, and cases where we were using "else" after a 'if (ex.reason) < 0)' [a CATCH after this patch]. The result was folded into this patch so that GDB still builds at each incremental step. END_CATCH is necessary for two reasons: First, because we name the exception object in the CATCH block, which requires creating a scope, which in turn must be closed somewhere. Declaring the exception variable in the initializer field of a for block, like: #define CATCH(EXCEPTION, mask) \ for (struct gdb_exception EXCEPTION; \ exceptions_state_mc_catch (&EXCEPTION, MASK); \ EXCEPTION = exception_none) would avoid needing END_CATCH, but alas, in C mode, we build with C90, which doesn't allow mixed declarations and code. Second, because when TRY/CATCH are wired to real C++ try/catch, as long as we need to handle cleanup chains, even if there's no CATCH block that wants to catch the exception, we need for stop at every frame in the unwind chain and run cleanups, then rethrow. That will be done in END_CATCH. After we require C++, we'll still need TRY/CATCH/END_CATCH until cleanups are completely phased out -- TRY/CATCH in C++ mode will save/restore the current cleanup chain, like in C mode, and END_CATCH catches otherwise uncaugh exceptions, runs cleanups and rethrows, so that C++ cleanups and exceptions can coexist. IMO, this still makes the TRY/CATCH code look a bit more like a newcomer would expect, so IMO worth it even if we weren't considering C++. gdb/ChangeLog. 2015-03-07 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * common/common-exceptions.c (struct catcher) <exception>: No longer a pointer to volatile exception. 2015-02-27mi/mi-cmd-stack.c|frame filters: print_values <-> ext_lang_frame_argsPedro Alves1-7/+24
The enums are value compatible by design, but building in C++ mode trips on them, like: ... gdb/mi/mi-cmd-stack.c:363:34: error: cannot convert ‘print_values’ to ‘ext_lang_frame_args’ for argument ‘3’ to ‘ext_lang_bt_status apply_ext_lang_frame_filter(frame_info*, int, ext_lang_frame_args, ui_out*, int, int)’ ... 2014-06-18constify struct block in some placesTom Tromey1-1/+1
This makes some spots in gdb, particularly general_symbol_info, use a "const struct block", then fixes the fallout. The justification is that, ordinarily, blocks ought to be readonly. 2013-09-17PR gdb/15911: "info threads" changes the default source and line (for ↵Pedro Alves1-2/+2
"break", "list") "info threads" changes the default source for "break" and "list", to whatever the location of the first/bottom thread in the thread list is... (gdb) b start (gdb) c ... (gdb) list *lists "start"* (gdb) b 23 Breakpoint 3 at 0x400614: file test.c, line 23. (gdb) info threads Id Target Id Frame * 2 Thread 0x7ffff7fcb700 (LWP 1760) "test" start (arg=0x0) at test.c:23 1 Thread 0x7ffff7fcc740 (LWP 1748) "test" 0x000000323dc08e60 in pthread_join (threadid=140737353922304, thread_return=0x0) at pthread_join.c:93 (gdb) b 23 Breakpoint 4 at 0x323dc08d90: file pthread_join.c, line 23. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ (gdb) list 93 lll_wait_tid (pd->tid); 94 95 96 /* Restore cancellation mode. */ 97 CANCEL_RESET (oldtype); 98 99 /* Remove the handler. */ 100 pthread_cleanup_pop (0); 101 102 The issue is that print_stack_frame always sets the current sal to the frame's sal. print_frame_info (which print_stack_frame calls to do most of the work) also sets the last displayed sal, but only if print_what isn't LOCATION. Now the call in question, from within thread.c:print_thread_info, does pass in LOCATION as print_what, but print_stack_frame doesn't have the same check print_frame_info has. We could consider adding it, but setting these globals depending on print_what isn't very clean, IMO. What we have is two logically distinct operations mixed in the same function(s): #1 - print frame, in the format specified by {print_what, print_level and print_args}. #2 - We're displaying a frame to the user, and I want the default sal to point here, because the program stopped here, or the user did some context-changing command (up, down, etc.). So I added a new parameter to print_stack_frame & friends for point #2, and went through all calls in the tree adjusting as necessary. Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17. gdb/ 2013-09-17 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> PR gdb/15911 * ada-tasks.c (task_command_1): Adjust call to print_stack_frame. * bsd-kvm.c (bsd_kvm_open, bsd_kvm_proc_cmd, bsd_kvm_pcb_cmd): * corelow.c (core_open): * frame.h (print_stack_frame, print_frame_info): New 'set_current_sal' parameter. * infcmd.c (finish_command, kill_command): Adjust call to print_stack_frame. * inferior.c (inferior_command): Likewise. * infrun.c (normal_stop): Likewise. * linux-fork.c (linux_fork_context): Likewise. * record-full.c (record_full_goto_entry, record_full_restore): Likewise. * remote-mips.c (common_open): Likewise. * stack.c (print_stack_frame): New 'set_current_sal' parameter. 2013-08-27Add options to skip unavailable localsYao Qi1-20/+57
This is the patch to add new option '--skip-unavailable' to MI commands '-stack-list-{locals, arguments, variables}'. This patch extends list_args_or_locals to add a new parameter 'skip_unavailable', and don't list locals or arguments if values are unavailable and 'skip_unavailable' is true. This is inspecting a trace frame (tfind mode), where only a few locals have been collected. -stack-list-locals, no switch vs new switch: -stack-list-locals --simple-values ^done, locals=[{name="array",type="unsigned char [2]"},{name="i",type="int",value="<unavailable>"}] -stack-list-locals --skip-unavailable --simple-values ^done, locals=[{name="array",type="unsigned char [2]"}] -stack-list-arguments, no switch vs new switch: -stack-list-arguments --simple-values ^done,stack-args=[frame={level="0",args=[{name="j",type="int",value="4"},{name="s",type="char *",value="<unavailable>"}]},frame={level="1",args=[]}] -stack-list-arguments --skip-unavailable --simple-values ^done,stack-args=[frame={level="0",args=[{name="j",type="int",value="4"}]},frame={level="1",args=[]}] -stack-list-variables, no switch vs new switch: -stack-list-variables --simple-values ^done,variables=[{name="j",arg="1",type="int",value="4"},{name="s",arg="1",type="char *",value="<unavailable>"},{name="array",type="unsigned char [2]"},{name="i",type="int",value="<unavailable>"}] -stack-list-variables --skip-unavailable --simple-values ^done,variables=[{name="j",arg="1",type="int",value="4"},{name="array",type="unsigned char [2]"}] tests are added to test these new options. gdb: 2013-08-27 Pedro Alves <pedro@codesourcery.com> Yao Qi <yao@codesourcery.com> * mi/mi-cmd-stack.c (list_args_or_locals): Adjust prototype. 2013-05-30fix mi-cmd-stack.cTom Tromey1-4/+1
mi-cmd-stack.d had a conditional cleanup, "cleanup_tuple" that confused the checker. However, there was no need for this, since it was only used via do_cleanups at the end of the function, just before another call to do_cleanups. So, while this is a stylistic patch for the checker, I also consider it a generic improvement for readers of the code. * mi/mi-cmd-stack.c (list_arg_or_local): Remove "cleanup_tuple".

2012-02-03GDB/MI: crash printing "_task" (Ada) argumentJoel Brobecker1-1/+2
In GDB/MI mode, trying to print the arguments of the frame corresponding to the body of a task ("-stack-list-arguments 1") causes the debugger to crash. This is because the compiler adds an implicit argument to that task body called "_task". mi/mi-cmd-stack.c:list_args_or_locals, which is responsible for printing the value of our arguments, finds that our "_task" symbol is an argument, and thus tries to fing the non-argument equivalent: if (SYMBOL_IS_ARGUMENT (sym)) sym2 = lookup_symbol (SYMBOL_NATURAL_NAME (sym), block, VAR_DOMAIN, (int *) NULL); Unfortunately, it tries using the natural name, which doesn't always work for Ada parameters, in particular those who are internally- generated. In our case, The "_task" parameter's natural name is "<_task>", and that symbol does not exist. So sym2 is NULL, thus causing the crash a little later on when trying to dereference it. We should be using the symbol linkage name in this case, the same way iterate_over_block_arg_vars already does. gdb/ChangeLog: * mi/mi-cmd-stack.c (list_args_or_locals): For argument symbols, use SYMBOL_LINKAGE_NAME to find the corresponding non-argument symbol. Add assertion that sym2 is never NULL. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: * gdb.ada/mi_task_arg: New testcase.
