2018-07-04darwin: Don't use sbrkSimon Marchi1-2/+2
This patch gets rid of this warning on macOS: CXX main.o /Users/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/main.c:492:27: error: 'sbrk' is deprecated [-Werror,-Wdeprecated-declarations] lim_at_start = (char *) sbrk (0); ^ /usr/include/unistd.h:585:1: note: 'sbrk' has been explicitly marked deprecated here __deprecated __WATCHOS_PROHIBITED __TVOS_PROHIBITED ^ /usr/include/sys/cdefs.h:176:37: note: expanded from macro '__deprecated' #define __deprecated __attribute__((deprecated)) ^ sbrk on macOS is not useful for our purposes, since sbrk(0) always returns the same value. From what I read, brk/sbrk on macOS is just an emulation, it always returns a pointer in a 4MB section reserved for that. So instead of letting users use "maint set per-command space on" and print silly results, I think we should just disable that feature for this platform (as we do for platforms that don't have sbrk). I defined a HAVE_USEFUL_SBRK macro and used that instead of HAVE_SBRK. gdb/ChangeLog: * common/common-defs.h (HAVE_USEFUL_SBRK): Define. * main.c: Use HAVE_USEFUL_SBRK instead of HAVE_SBRK. * maint.c: Likewise. * top.c: Likewise.
2018-02-13Fix prefix of maint set/show per-commandSimon Marchi1-2/+2
I noticed this: (gdb) apropos per-command maintenance set per-command -- Per-command statistics settings set per-command space -- Set whether to display per-command space usage set per-command symtab -- Set whether to display per-command symtab statistics set per-command time -- Set whether to display per-command execution time maintenance show per-command -- Show per-command statistics settings show per-command space -- Show whether to display per-command space usage show per-command symtab -- Show whether to display per-command symtab statistics show per-command time -- Show whether to display per-command execution time The subcommands of "maintenance set per-command" are missing the maintenance keyword. This is because that command is registered with the wrong prefix. This patch fixes that. gdb/ChangeLog: * maint.c (_initialize_maint_cmds): Fix prefix of maint set/show per-command.
2018-01-08Fix GDB build failure when $development is falseYao Qi1-0/+10
We don't build GDB selftests bits when $development is false. However, if we turn bfd/development.sh:$development to false, common/selftest.c is compiled which is not expected. It causes the build failure, selftest.o: In function `selftests::run_tests(char const*)': binutils-gdb/gdb/common/selftest.c:97: undefined reference to `selftests::reset()' collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status I fix this issue by putting selftest.o selftest-arch.o into CONFIG_OBS only when $development is true. After this is fixed, there are other build failures in maint.c, this patch fixes them as well. In the release mode, the output of these commands are: (gdb) maintenance selftest Selftests are not available in a non-development build. (gdb) maintenance selftest foo Selftests are not available in a non-development build. (gdb) maintenance info selftests Selftests are not available in a non-development build. gdb: 2018-01-08 Yao Qi <yao.qi@linaro.org> Simon Marchi <simon.marchi@ericsson.com> * Makefile.in (COMMON_SFILES): Remove selftest-arch.c and common/selftest.c. (COMMON_OBS): Remove selftest.o. * configure.ac: Append selftest-arch.c and common/selftest.c to CONFIG_SRCS. Append selftest-arch.o and selftest.o to COMMON_OBS. * configure: Re-generated. * maint.c (maintenance_selftest): Wrap selftests::run_tests with GDB_SELF_TEST. 2017-11-07Remove cmd_cfunc_ftypeTom Tromey1-15/+12
This removes cmd_cfunc_ftype and the non-const overload of add_cmd; then fixes up the fallout. For the most part this patch is straightforward. There are a few files (go32-nat.c, windows-nat.c, and gnu-nat.c) that I could not compile; so I made a best effort there. gdb/ChangeLog 2017-11-07 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * go32-nat.c (go32_sysinfo, go32_sldt, go32_sgdt, go32_sidt) (go32_pde, go32_pte, go32_pte_for_address): Constify. * gnu-nat.c (_parse_bool_arg, show_thread_default_pause_cmd) (set_thread_default_pause_cmd, set_thread_default_run_cmd) (show_thread_default_run_cmd, set_thread_default_detach_sc_cmd) (parse_int_arg, show_thread_default_detach_sc_cmd) (set_signals_cmd, show_signals_cmd, set_sig_thread_cmd) (show_sig_thread_cmd, set_stopped_cmd, show_stopped_cmd) (set_exceptions_cmd, show_exceptions_cmd, set_task_pause_cmd) (show_task_pause_cmd, set_task_detach_sc_cmd) (show_task_detach_sc_cmd, set_task_exc_port_cmd) (set_noninvasive_cmd, set_thread_pause_cmd) (show_thread_pause_cmd, set_thread_run_cmd, show_thread_run_cmd) (set_thread_detach_sc_cmd, show_thread_detach_sc_cmd) (set_thread_exc_port_cmd, thread_takeover_sc_cmd): Constify. * windows-nat.c (display_selectors): Constify. * cli/cli-decode.h (struct cmd_list_element) <function>: Remove non-const "cfunc". * cli/cli-decode.c (set_cmd_cfunc): Remove non-const overload. 2017-10-11Constify add_prefix_cmdTom Tromey1-14/+8
This changes add_prefix_cmd to accept a const-taking function as an argument; then fixes up all the callers. In a couple of spots I had to add a non-const overload of a function, because the function is passed to two different command-adding "constructors". These overloads are temporary; once constification is complete they can be removed. This patch also fixes a typo I happened to notice while constifying. Note that this touches a couple of files (gnu-nat.c and go32-nat.c) that I can't build. So, while I made a best-effort there, I am not certain they will still compile. 2017-09-16Add selftests run filteringSimon Marchi1-3/+15
With the growing number of selftests, I think it would be useful to be able to run only a subset of the tests. This patch associates a name to each registered selftest. It then allows doing something like: (gdb) maintenance selftest aarch64 Running self-tests. Running selftest aarch64-analyze-prologue. Running selftest aarch64-process-record. Ran 2 unit tests, 0 failed or with gdbserver: ./gdbserver --selftest=aarch64 In both cases, only the tests that contain "aarch64" in their name are ran. To help validate that the tests you want to run were actually ran, it also prints a message with the test name before running each test. Right now, all the arch-dependent tests are registered as a single test of the selftests. To be able to filter those too, I made them "first-class citizen" selftests. The selftest type is an interface, with different implementations for "simple selftests" and "arch selftests". The run_tests function simply iterates on that an invokes operator() on each test. I changed the tests data structure from a vector to a map, because - it allows iterating in a stable (alphabetical) order - it allows to easily verify if a test with a given name has been registered, to avoid duplicates There's also a new command "maintenance info selftests" that lists the registered selftests. gdb/ChangeLog: * common/selftest.h (selftest): New struct/interface. 2017-07-26Add "maint check xml-descriptions" to test builtin xml target descriptionsYao Qi1-0/+18
Now, GDB is able to dynamically create i386-linux target descriptions from features, instead of using pre-generated target descriptions. These pre-generated target descriptions are no longer used by GDB (note that they are still used by GDBserver). This patch add a new maint command "maint check xml-descriptions" to test dynamically generated tdesc are identical to these generated from xml files. gdb: 2017-07-26 Yao Qi <yao.qi@linaro.org> * cli/cli-cmds.c (maintenancechecklist): New variable. * gdbcmd.h (maintenancechecklist): Declare it. * i386-linux-tdep.c (_initialize_i386_linux_tdep) [GDB_SELF_TEST]: Call i386_linux_read_description with different masks. * maint.c (maintenance_check_command): New function. 2017-02-02Eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete / make ui_file a class hierarchyPedro Alves1-6/+3
This patch starts from the desire to eliminate make_cleanup_ui_file_delete, but then goes beyond. It makes ui_file & friends a real C++ class hierarchy, and switches temporary ui_file-like objects to stack-based allocation. - mem_fileopen -> string_file mem_fileopen is replaced with a new string_file class that is treated as a value class created on the stack. This alone eliminates most make_cleanup_ui_file_delete calls, and, simplifies code a whole lot (diffstat shows around 1k loc dropped.) string_file's internal buffer is a std::string, thus the "string" in the name. This simplifies the implementation much, compared to mem_fileopen, which managed growing its internal buffer manually. - ui_file_as_string, ui_file_strdup, ui_file_obsavestring all gone The new string_file class has a string() method that provides direct writable access to the internal std::string buffer. This replaced ui_file_as_string, which forced a copy of the same data the stream had inside. With direct access via a writable reference, we can instead move the string out of the string_stream, avoiding deep string copying. Related, ui_file_xstrdup calls are replaced with xstrdup'ping the stream's string, and ui_file_obsavestring is replaced by obstack_copy0. With all those out of the way, getting rid of the weird ui_file_put mechanism was possible. - New ui_file::printf, ui_file::puts, etc. methods These simplify / clarify client code. I considered splitting client-code changes, like these, e.g.: - stb = mem_fileopen (); - fprintf_unfiltered (stb, "%s%s%s", - _("The valid values are:\n"), - regdesc, - _("The default is \"std\".")); + string_file stb; + stb.printf ("%s%s%s", + _("The valid values are:\n"), + regdesc, + _("The default is \"std\".")); In two steps, with the first step leaving fprintf_unfiltered (etc.) calls in place, and only afterwards do a pass to change all those to call stb.printf etc.. I didn't do that split, because (when I tried), it turned out to be pointless make-work: the first pass would have to touch the fprintf_unfiltered line anyway, to replace "stb" with "&stb". - gdb_fopen replaced with stack-based objects This avoids the need for cleanups or unique_ptr's. I.e., this: struct ui_file *file = gdb_fopen (filename, "w"); if (filename == NULL) perror_with_name (filename); cleanups = make_cleanup_ui_file_delete (file); // use file. do_cleanups (cleanups); is replaced with this: stdio_file file; if (!file.open (filename, "w")) perror_with_name (filename); // use file. - odd contorsions in null_file_write / null_file_fputs around when to call to_fputs / to_write eliminated. - Global null_stream object A few places that were allocating a ui_file in order to print to "nowhere" are adjusted to instead refer to a new 'null_stream' global stream. - TUI's tui_sfileopen eliminated. TUI's ui_file much simplified The TUI's ui_file was serving a dual purpose. It supported being used as string buffer, and supported being backed by a stdio FILE. The string buffer part is gone, replaced by using of string_file. 2016-11-23gdb: Use C++11 std::chronoPedro Alves1-17/+14
This patch fixes a few problems with GDB's time handling. #1 - It avoids problems with gnulib's C++ namespace support On MinGW, the struct timeval that should be passed to gnulib's gettimeofday replacement is incompatible with libiberty's timeval_sub/timeval_add. That's because gnulib also replaces "struct timeval" with its own definition, while libiberty expects the system's. E.g., in code like this: gettimeofday (&prompt_ended, NULL); timeval_sub (&prompt_delta, &prompt_ended, &prompt_started); timeval_add (&prompt_for_continue_wait_time, &prompt_for_continue_wait_time, &prompt_delta); That's currently handled in gdb by not using gnulib's gettimeofday at all (see common/gdb_sys_time.h), but that #undef hack won't work with if/when we enable gnulib's C++ namespace support, because that mode adds compile time warnings for uses of ::gettimeofday, which are hard errors with -Werror. #2 - But there's an elephant in the room: gettimeofday is not monotonic... We're using it to: a) check how long functions take, for performance analysis b) compute when in the future to fire events in the event-loop c) print debug timestamps But that's exactly what gettimeofday is NOT meant for. Straight from the man page: ~~~ The time returned by gettimeofday() is affected by discontinuous jumps in the system time (e.g., if the system administrator manually changes the system time). If you need a monotonically increasing clock, see clock_gettime(2). ~~~ std::chrono (part of the C++11 standard library) has a monotonic clock exactly for such purposes (std::chrono::steady_clock). This commit switches to use that instead of gettimeofday, fixing all the issues mentioned above. gdb/ChangeLog: 2016-11-23 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * Makefile.in (SFILES): Add common/run-time-clock.c. 2016-10-28Fix gdb.base/maint.exp regressionsPedro Alves1-0/+6
This commit fixes these regressions: FAIL: gdb.base/maint.exp: mt set per on for expand-symtabs FAIL: gdb.base/maint.exp: maint set per-command on caused by commit 1e3b796d58ac ("Change command stats reporting to use class"). gdb.log shows that the command stats are now printing garbage: (gdb) mt set per on Command execution time: -6.-419590 (cpu), 1467139648.-7706296840 (wall) Space used: 9809920 (-33276528 for this command) (gdb) FAIL: gdb.base/maint.exp: mt set per on for expand-symtabs while there should have been no output at all. The stats printing is done from within the scoped_command_stats's destructor, depending on whether some flags in the object are set. The problem is simply that scoped_command_stats's ctor misses clearing those flags on some paths. Since scoped_command_stats objects are allocated on the stack, whether you'll see the regression simply depends on whatever happens to already be on the stack space the object occupies. gdb/ChangeLog: 2016-10-28 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * maint.c (scoped_command_stats::scoped_command_stats): Clear m_space_enabled, m_time_enabled and m_symtab_enabled.

2016-05-17Add self-test framework to gdbTom Tromey1-0/+18
I wanted to unit test the Rust lexer, so I added a simple unit testing command to gdb. The intent is that self tests will only be compiled into gdb in development mode. In release mode they simply won't exist. So, this exposes $development to C code as GDB_SELF_TEST. In development mode, test functions are registered with the self test module. A test function is just a function that does some checks, and throws an exception on failure. Then this adds a new "maint selftest" command which invokes the test functions, and a new dejagnu test case that invokes it. 2016-05-17 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * NEWS: Add "maint selftest" entry. * selftest.h: New file. * selftest.c: New file. * maint.c: Include selftest.h. 2015-08-24Prepare for gnulib updatePedro Alves1-1/+1
After the last gnulib import (Dec 2012), gnulib upstream started replacing mingw's 'struct timeval' with a version with 64-bit time_t, for POSIX compliance: commit f8e84098084b3b53bc6943a5542af1f607ffd477 Author: Bruno Haible <bruno@clisp.org> Date: Sat Jan 28 18:12:10 2012 +0100 sys_time: Override 'struct timeval' on some native Windows platforms. See: https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnulib/2012-01/msg00372.html However, that results in conflicts with native Winsock2's 'select': select()'s argument http://sourceforge.net/p/mingw-w64/mailman/message/29610438/ ... and libiberty's timeval-utils.h timeval_add/timeval_sub, at the least. We don't really need the POSIX compliance, so this patch prepares us to simply not use gnulib's 'struct timeval' replacement once a more recent gnulib is imported, thus preserving the current behavior, by adding a sys/time.h wrapper header that undefs gnulib's replacements, and including that everywhere instead. The SIZE -> OSIZE change is necessary because newer gnulib's sys/time.h also includes windows.h/winsock2.h, which defines a conflicting SIZE symbol. Cross build-tested mingw-w64 32-bit and 64-bit. 2014-11-20Split struct symtab into two: struct symtab and compunit_symtab.Doug Evans1-20/+20
Currently "symtabs" in gdb are stored as a single linked list of struct symtab that contains both symbol symtabs (the blockvectors) and file symtabs (the linetables). This has led to confusion, bugs, and performance issues. This patch is conceptually very simple: split struct symtab into two pieces: one part containing things common across the entire compilation unit, and one part containing things specific to each source file. Example. For the case of a program built out of these files: foo.c foo1.h foo2.h bar.c foo1.h bar.h Today we have a single list of struct symtabs: objfile -> foo.c -> foo1.h -> foo2.h -> bar.c -> foo1.h -> bar.h -> NULL where "->" means the "next" pointer in struct symtab. With this patch, that turns into: objfile -> foo.c(cu) -> bar.c(cu) -> NULL | | v v foo.c bar.c | | v v foo1.h foo1.h | | v v foo2.h bar.h | | v v NULL NULL where "foo.c(cu)" and "bar.c(cu)" are struct compunit_symtab objects, and the files foo.c, etc. are struct symtab objects. So now, for example, when we want to iterate over all blockvectors we can now just iterate over the compunit_symtab list. Plus a lot of the data that was either unused or replicated for each symtab in a compilation unit now lives in struct compunit_symtab. E.g., the objfile pointer, the producer string, etc. I thought of moving "language" out of struct symtab but there is logic to try to compute the language based on previously seen files, and I think that's best left as is for now. With my standard monster benchmark with -readnow (which I can't actually do, but based on my calculations), whereas today the list requires 77MB to store all the struct symtabs, it now only requires 37MB. A modest space savings given the gigabytes needed for all the debug info, etc. Still, it's nice. Plus, whereas today we create a copy of dirname for each source file symtab in a compilation unit, we now only create one for the compunit. So this patch is basically just a data structure reorg, I don't expect significant performance improvements from it. Notes: 1) A followup patch can do a similar split for struct partial_symtab. I have left that until after I get the changes I want in to better utilize .gdb_index (it may affect how we do partial syms). 2) Another followup patch *could* rename struct symtab. The term "symtab" is ambiguous and has been a source of confusion. In this patch I'm leaving it alone, calling it the "historical" name of "filetabs", which is what they are now: just the file-name + line-table. gdb/ChangeLog: Split struct symtab into two: struct symtab and compunit_symtab. * amd64-tdep.c (amd64_skip_xmm_prologue): Fetch producer from compunit. * block.c (blockvector_for_pc_sect): Change "struct symtab *" argument to "struct compunit_symtab *". Currently there are many calls to help_list that pass the constant -1 as the "class" value. 2014-02-26start change to progspace independenceTom Tromey1-1/+1
This patch starts changing minimal symbols to be independent of the program space. Specifically, it adds a new objfile parameter to MSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS and changes all the code to use it. This is needed so we can change gdb to apply the section offset when a minsym's address is computed, as opposed to baking the offsets into the symbol itself. A few spots still need the unrelocated address. For these, we introduce MSYMBOL_VALUE_RAW_ADDRESS. As a convenience, we also add the new macro BMSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS, which computes the address of a bound minimal symbol. This just does the obvious thing with the fields. Note that this change does not actually enable program space independence. That requires more changes to gdb. However, to ensure that these changes compile properly, this patch does add the needed section lookup code to MSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS -- it just ensures it has no effect at runtime by multiplying the offset by 0. 2014-02-26 Tom Tromey <tromey@redhat.com> * ada-lang.c (ada_main_name): Update. 2014-02-26change minsym representationTom Tromey1-3/+3
In a later patch we're going to change the minimal symbol address calculation to apply section offsets at the point of use. To make it simpler to catch potential problem spots, this patch changes the representation of minimal symbols and introduces new minimal-symbol-specific variants of the various accessors. This is necessary because it would be excessively ambitious to try to convert all the symbol types at once. The core of this change is just renaming a field in minimal_symbol; the rest is just a fairly mechanical rewording. 2014-02-26 Tom Tromey <tromey@redhat.com> * symtab.h (struct minimal_symbol) <mginfo>: Rename from ginfo.
