Adds a configure option --with-system-gdbinit-dir to specify a directory
in which to look for gdbinit files. All files in this directory are
loaded on startup (subject to -n/-nx as usual) as long as the extension
matches a known and enabled scripting language (.gdb/.py/.scm).
This also changes get_ext_lang_of_file to support ".gdb" files, similar
to get_ext_lang_defn's handling of EXT_LANG_GDB.

Once https://sourceware.org/ml/insight/2019-q4/msg00000.html lands,
we can just include gdbtk.h to get the declarations for
external_editor_command and gdbtk_test, instead of having to
declare them here in main.c.

Commit f2aec7f6d14 changed gdb_datadir to std::string.
So, xstrdup-ing the result of relocate_gdb_directory (returning a std::string)
is not needed and creates a leak.
Fix the leak by removing the xstrdup and the not needed c_str ().
Also removes a useless conversion of gdb_datadir to std::string.

This simplifies memory management. I've also changed some global variables
to std::string accordingly (which store the result of these functions),
but not all because some are used with add_setshow_optional_filename_cmd
which requires a char*.

I noticed that init_cli_cmds only installs a command, and so doesn't
need to be handled specially. This patch merges it into
_initialize_cli_cmds.
The help text is constructed dynamically, which is sometimes an
indication that special treatment is needed; but in this case it is
just to insert the value of "gdbinit", which is created at
compile-time and not modified; so this doesn't affect the result.
This version also removes the "gdbinit" global. There's no need for
it, as GDBINIT can be used instead. Note, though, that the help text
in question must still be dynamically constructed, in order to be
i18n-friendly.

This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.
This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.
I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.
Tested by the buildbot.

Currently, a previous command can be repeated when the user types an
empty line. This is implemented in handle_line_of_input by
returning saved_command_line in case an empty line has been input.
If we want a command to repeat the previous command, we need to save
the previous saved_command_line, as when a command runs, the saved_command_line
already contains the current command line of the command being executed.
As suggested by Tom, the previous_saved_command_line is made static.
At the same time, saved_command_line is also made static.
The support functions/variables for the repeat command logic are now all
located inside top.c.

This makes exception handling more efficient in a few spots, through
the use of const- and rvalue-references.
I wrote this patch by commenting out the gdb_exception copy
constructor and then examining the resulting error messages one by
one, introducing the use of std::move where appropriate.

This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed
due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone.
The intermediate layer of gdb_exception_RETURN_MASK_ALL did not seem

The GCC Guality testsuite within GCC compiles C/C++ files in GCC at
various optimization levels then debugs them in GDB, checking that
program values can be read. This is done within the dejagnu framework.
The new style options in GDB have broken many of the tests due to the
testsuite being unable to process the new control characters. The fix
in Guality is to either to improve the string matching or to disable
styling on the cli or init file (after checking gdb is recent enough
to support styling).
This fix will also need making an any other testsuites in the wild
that use GDB.
An alternative would be to automatically disable styling when using GDB
in batch mode. The reasoning here is that batch mode is only used when
automating GDB and any output will be processed later either with text
processing tools or viewed in text editors, many of these will not
correctly handle the control characters by default. This ensures GDB
continues to work as expected. Anyone who explicitly wants styling in
batch mode can enable it either in the init file or adding to the batch
file - but that would not be the standard use case.
Patch simply disables style after reading the batch command flag, before
reading in the init file or batch file.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

Alan recently added a way for BFD library users to check whether they
were in fact loading a compatible version of BFD:
https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2018-10/msg00198.html
It seemed reasonable to me that gdb should do this check as well, in
case someone is dynamically linking against BFD.
Simon pointed out that an earlier version of the patch would cause a
gdb crash if the test failed. This version works around this by
lowering the call to bfd_init and adding a comment explaining where
'error' can safely be called in captured_main_1.

This fixes all the straightforward -Wshadow=local warnings in gdb. A
few standard approaches are used here:
* Renaming an inner (or outer, but more commonly inner) variable;
* Lowering a declaration to avoid a clash;
* Moving a declaration into a more inner scope to avoid a clash,
including the special case of moving a declaration into a loop header.
I did not consider any of the changes in this patch to be particularly
noteworthy, though of course they should all still be examined.

I noticed that some code in gdb was doing:
char *mumble = getenv (...)
However, using "const char *" here would be clearer.

sbrk on macOS is not useful for our purposes, since sbrk(0) always
returns the same value. From what I read, brk/sbrk on macOS is just an
emulation, it always returns a pointer in a 4MB section reserved for
that.
So instead of letting users use "maint set per-command space on" and
print silly results, I think we should just disable that feature for
this platform (as we do for platforms that don't have sbrk).
I defined a HAVE_USEFUL_SBRK macro and used that instead of HAVE_SBRK.

This is a bit on the wordy side, but also references interactive
commands, which I think doesn't really make sense for --version.
This patch removes some text from --version, while leaving it in the
"show version" output. It also adds a newline between the URLs and
the "For help, ..." text, because I thought that was easier to read.
Finally, it indents one of the URLs, since that was simpler to read,
but not the other URL, because the current format is specified by the
GNU coding standards section on "--version".
Now the --version output looks like:

This commit moves the path manipulation routines found on utils.c to a
new common/pathstuff.c, and updates the Makefile.in's accordingly.
The routines moved are "gdb_realpath", "gdb_realpath_keepfile" and
"gdb_abspath".
This will be needed because gdbserver will have to call "gdb_abspath"
on my next patch, which implements a way to expand the path of the
inferior provided by the user in order to allow specifying just the
binary name when starting gdbserver, like:
$ gdbserver :1234 a.out
With the recent addition of the startup-with-shell feature on
gdbserver, this scenario doesn't work anymore if the user doesn't have
the current directory listed in the PATH variable.
I had to do a minor adjustment on "gdb_abspath" because we don't have
access to "tilde_expand" on gdbserver, so now the function is using
"gdb_tilde_expand" instead. Otherwise, the code is the same.
Regression tested on the BuildBot, without regressions.

reports that the fix for PR gdb/18653 made GDB useless if you preload
libSegFault.so, because GDB internal-errors on startup:

The purpose of this concept is to turn the load of debugging
information off, either globally (via the '--readnever' option), or
objfile-specific. The implementation proposed here is an extension of
the patch distributed with Fedora GDB; looking at the Fedora patch
itself and the history, one can see some reasons why it was never
resubmitted:
- The patch appears to have been introduced as a workaround, at
least initially;
- The patch is far from perfect, as it simply shunts the load of
DWARF debugging information, without really worrying about the
other debug format.
- Who really does non-symbolic debugging anyways?
One use of this feature is when a user simply wants to do the
following sequence: attach, dump core, detach. Loading the debugging
information in this case is an unnecessary cause of delay.
This patch expands the version shipped with Fedora GDB in order to
make the feature available for all the debuginfo backends, not only
for DWARF. It also implements a per-objfile flag which can be
activated by using the "-readnever" command when using the
'add-symbol-file' or 'symbol-file' commands.
It's also worth mentioning that this patch tests whether GDB correctly
fails to initialize if both '--readnow' and '--readnever' options are
passed.
Tested on the BuildBot.

After commit bf4692711232 ("Eliminate catch_errors"), GCC started
inlining captured_command_loop in captured_main. And setting a
breakpoint on captured_command_loop makes the inferior GDB stop in
captured_main, _after_ captured_command_loop's call to
interp_pre_command_loop, which prints the inferior GDB's prompt, has
already executed, confusing the gdb.gdb/ selftest tests:

If you want to use catch_errors with a function with parameters, then
currently you have to manually write a "capture" struct wrapping the
arguments and marshall/unmarshall that.
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2017-09/msg00834.html proposed
adjusting catch_errors to use gdb::function_view, which would allow
passing lambdas with automatic captures. However, it seems like using
TRY/CATCH directly instead ends up producing clearer and easier to
debug code. This is what this commit does.
Note that removing catch_errors exposes further cleanup opportunities
around no longer having to follow catch_errors callback type, and also
removes a few cleanups.
I didn't do anything to save/restore current_uiout because I think
that should be the responsibility of the code that changes
current_uiout in the first place.
(Another approach could be to make catch_errors a variadic template
like:
template<typename Function, typename... Args>

and then with:

Currently we have "current_directory" and "gdb_dirbuf" globals, which
means that we basically have two possible places to consult when we
want to know GDB's current working directory.
This is not ideal and can lead to confusion. Moreover, the way we're
using "gdb_difbuf" along with "getcwd" is problematic because we
declare the buffer with "1024" elements hardcoded, which does not take
into account longer pathnames that are possible in many filesystems.
Using "PATH_MAX" would also not be a solution because of portability
problems. Therefore, the best solution is to rely on the fact that
"getcwd (NULL, 0)" will "do the right thing" and return a
heap-allocated string containing the full path. With the new "getcwd"
module from gnulib, it is now possible to do that without worrying
about breaking some host.
With this patch "current_directory" is now the only place to check for
GDB's cwd.

This changes gdb_realpath to return a unique_xmalloc_ptr and fixes up
the callers. This allows removing some cleanups. This change by
itself caused xfullpath.exp to fail; and attempting to fix that ran
into various problems (like .get() being optimized out); so this patch
also rewrites xfullpath.exp to be a C++ selftest instead.

It's quite easy to get rid of it by using &foo[len] instead of foo + len.
I think this warning is relevant to keep enabled, because it can be an
easy mistake to do.

This patch starts from the desire to eliminate
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete, but then goes beyond. It makes ui_file &
friends a real C++ class hierarchy, and switches temporary
ui_file-like objects to stack-based allocation.
- mem_fileopen -> string_file
mem_fileopen is replaced with a new string_file class that is treated
as a value class created on the stack. This alone eliminates most
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete calls, and, simplifies code a whole lot
(diffstat shows around 1k loc dropped.)
string_file's internal buffer is a std::string, thus the "string" in
the name. This simplifies the implementation much, compared to
mem_fileopen, which managed growing its internal buffer manually.
- ui_file_as_string, ui_file_strdup, ui_file_obsavestring all gone
The new string_file class has a string() method that provides direct
writable access to the internal std::string buffer. This replaced
ui_file_as_string, which forced a copy of the same data the stream had
inside. With direct access via a writable reference, we can instead
move the string out of the string_stream, avoiding deep string
copying.
Related, ui_file_xstrdup calls are replaced with xstrdup'ping the
stream's string, and ui_file_obsavestring is replaced by
obstack_copy0.
With all those out of the way, getting rid of the weird ui_file_put
mechanism was possible.
- New ui_file::printf, ui_file::puts, etc. methods
These simplify / clarify client code. I considered splitting
client-code changes, like these, e.g.:

In two steps, with the first step leaving fprintf_unfiltered (etc.)
calls in place, and only afterwards do a pass to change all those to
call stb.printf etc.. I didn't do that split, because (when I tried),
it turned out to be pointless make-work: the first pass would have to
touch the fprintf_unfiltered line anyway, to replace "stb" with
"&stb".
- gdb_fopen replaced with stack-based objects
This avoids the need for cleanups or unique_ptr's. I.e., this:

as string buffer, and supported being backed by a stdio FILE. The
string buffer part is gone, replaced by using of string_file. The
'FILE *' support is now much simplified, by making the TUI's ui_file
inherit from stdio_file.

The immediate cause of the segv is that follow_exec is passing a NULL
argument (the result of exec_file_find) to strlen.
However, the problem is deeper than that: follow_exec simply isn't
prepared for the case where sysroot translation fails to locate the
new executable. Actually all callers of exec_file_find have bugs due
to confusion between host and target pathnames. This commit attempts
to fix all that.
In terms of the testcases that were formerly segv'ing, GDB now prints
a warning but continues execution of the new program, so that the
tests now mostly FAIL instead. You could argue the FAILs are due to a
legitimate problem with the test environment setting up the sysroot
translation incorrectly.
A new representative test is added which exercises the ne wwarning
code path even with native testing.
Tested on x86_64 Fedora 23, native and gdbserver.

An earlier patch split captured_main into two parts. This patch
removes the last remaining cleanup from captured_main_1, and also
replaces a second hand-rolled VEC-like array with a std::vector.

This removes make_command_stats_cleanup in favor of an RAII class.
The patch is reasonably straightforward, but keeping the same
semantics without excessive reindentation required splitting
captured_main in two.
