Function file_is_auto_load_safe was taking a format string and varargs
just to output a debug print. This is probably because that function is
used in linux-thread-db.c and main.c, but debug_auto_load is static in
auto-load.c. I simplified that, making debug_auto_load visible outside
of auto-load.c, and making the callers of file_is_auto_load_safe output
the debug print themselves.
This file uses _() for internationalization of the debug messages. This
is not necessary, as these are mostly messages for GDB developers, and
it's not used in other files anyway. So I removed them.
The rest is pretty much standard.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* auto-load.h (debug_auto_load): Move here.
(auto_load_debug_printf): New.
* auto-load.c: Use auto_load_debug_printf.
(debug_auto_load): Move to header.
* linux-thread-db.c (try_thread_db_load): Use
auto_load_debug_printf.
* main.c (captured_main_1): Likewise.

They are currently in target.h, it would make more sense to have them in
serial.h, since they are defined in serial.c.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* target.h (baud_rate, serial_parity): Move declarations...
* serial.h: ... here.
* main.c: Include serial.h.
* serial.c (baud_rate, serial_parity): Update doc.

Suppose we have the script file below:
break main
commands
print 123
end
run
If started with this script file, GDB executes the breakpoint command:
$ gdb -q -x myscript --args ./test
Reading symbols from ./test...
Breakpoint 1 at 0x114e: file test.c, line 2.
Breakpoint 1, main () at test.c:2
2 return 0;
$1 = 123
(gdb)
However, if we remove the "run" line from the script and pass it with
the '-ex' option instead, the command is not executed:
$ gdb -q -x myscript_no_run --args ./test
Reading symbols from ./test...
Breakpoint 1 at 0x114e: file test.c, line 2.
Starting program: /path/to/test
Breakpoint 1, main () at test.c:2
2 return 0;
(gdb)
If the user enters a command at this point, the breakpoint command
is executed, yielding weird output:
$ gdb -q -x myscript_no_run --args ./test
Reading symbols from ./test...
Breakpoint 1 at 0x114e: file test.c, line 2.
Starting program: /path/to/test
Breakpoint 1, main () at test.c:2
2 return 0;
(gdb) print "a"
$1 = "a"
$2 = 123
When consuming script files, GDB runs bp actions after executing a
command. See `command_handler` in event-top.c:
if (c[0] != '#')
{
execute_command (command, ui->instream == ui->stdin_stream);
/* Do any commands attached to breakpoint we stopped at. */
bpstat_do_actions ();
}
However, for '-ex' commands, `bpstat_do_actions` is not invoked.
Hence, the misaligned output explained above occurs. To fix the
problem, add a call to `bpstat_do_actions` after executing a command.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2020-12-07 Tankut Baris Aktemur <tankut.baris.aktemur@intel.com>
* main.c (catch_command_errors): Add a flag parameter; invoke
`bpstat_do_actions` if the flag is set.
(execute_cmdargs): Update a call to `catch_command_errors`.
gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog:
2020-12-07 Tankut Baris Aktemur <tankut.baris.aktemur@intel.com>
* gdb.base/bp-cmds-run-with-ex.c: New file.
* gdb.base/bp-cmds-run-with-ex.exp: New file.
* gdb.base/bp-cmds-run-with-ex.gdb: New file.
* gdb.gdb/python-interrupts.exp: Update the call to
'catch_command_errors' with the new argument.
* gdb.gdb/python-selftest.exp: Ditto.

Small refactor to wrap up executing the scripts and commands passed
using the -x, -ex, -ix, -iex command line flags.
There should be no user visible changes after this commit.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* main.c (execute_cmdargs): New function.
(captured_main_1): Make use of execute_cmdargs.

This commit effectively changes the default location of the .gdbinit
file, while maintaining backward compatibility.
For non Apple hosts the .gdbinit file will now be looked for in the
following locations:
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/gdb/gdbinit
$HOME/.config/gdb/gdbinit
$HOME/.gdbinit
On Apple hosts the search order is instead:
$HOME/Library/Preferences/gdb/gdbinit
$HOME/.gdbinit
I've performed an extensive rewrite of the documentation, moving all
information about initialization files and where to find them into a
new @node, text from other areas has been moved into this one
location, and other areas cross-reference to this new @node as much as
possible.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* NEWS: Mention changes to config file search path.
* main.c
gdb/doc/ChangeLog:
* gdb.texinfo (Mode Options): Descriptions of initialization files
has been moved to 'Initialization Files'.
(Startup): Likewise.
(Initialization Files): New node.
(gdb man): Update to mention alternative file paths.
(gdbinit man): Likewise.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

This converts the get_inferior_io_terminal and
set_inferior_io_terminal free functions to inferior methods.
Since the related commands are called "tty", "{set,show}
inferior-tty", and MI's "-inferior-tty-{set,show}", to make the
connection between the commands and the code more obvious, the methods
are named set_tty/tty instead of set_io_terminal/io_terminal.
gdb/ChangeLog:

* infcmd.c (set_inferior_io_terminal, get_inferior_io_terminal):

A subsequent patch is going to move event-loop.c to gdbsupport. In a
review of an earlier version of this series, Pedro pointed out that
the resulting code would be cleaner if start_event_loop were not
shared -- because gdb and gdbserver have some different needs here --
and so this moves start_event_loop to main.c. Because the only caller
is there, it is also now static.
gdb/ChangeLog
2020-04-13 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* event-loop.h (start_event_loop): Don't declare.
* event-loop.c (start_event_loop): Move...
* main.c (start_event_loop): ...here. Now static.

The motivation behind this commit is to make it easier to bundle the
Python *.py library files with GDB when statically linking GDB against
libpython. The Python files will be manually added into the GDB
installation tree, and GDB should be able to find them at run-time.
The installation tree will look like this:
.
|-- bin/
|-- include/
|-- lib/
| `-- python3.8/
`-- share/
The benefit here is that the entire installation tree can be bundled
into a single archive and copied to another machine with a different
version of Python installed, and GDB will still work, including its
Python support.
In use the new configure options would be used something like this,
first build and install a static Python library:
mkdir python
cd python
# Clone or download Python into a src/ directory.
mkdir build
export PYTHON_INSTALL_PATH=$PWD/install
cd build
../src/configure --disable-shared --prefix=$PYTHON_INSTALL_PATH
make
make install
Now build and install GDB:
mkdir binutils-gdb
cd binutils-gdb
# Clone or download GDB into a src/ directory.
mkdir build
export GDB_INSTALL_DIR=$PWD/install
cd build
../src/configure \
--prefix=$GDB_INSTALL_DIR \
--with-python=$PYTHON_INSTALL_PATH/bin/python3 \
--with-python-libdir=$GDB_INSTALL_DIR/lib
make all-gdb
make install-gdb
Finally, copy the Python libraries into the GDB install:
cp -r $PYTHON_INSTALL_DIR/lib/python3.8/ $GDB_INSTALL_DIR/lib
After this the Python src, build, and install directories are no
longer needed and can be deleted.
If the new --with-python-libdir option is not used then the existing
behaviour is left unchanged, GDB will look for the Python libraries in
the lib/ directory within the python path. The concatenation of the
python prefix and the string 'lib/' is now done at configure time,
rather than at run time in GDB as it was previous, however, this was
never something that the user had dynamic control over, so there's no
loss of functionality.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* config.in: Regenerate.
* configure: Regenerate.
* configure.ac: Add --with-python-libdir option.
* main.c: Use WITH_PYTHON_LIBDIR.

While handling the comments of Tom related to
[RFC] Have an option to tell GDB to detect and possibly handle mismatched exec-files.
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-12/msg00621.html
I saw that GDB warnings are produced ignoring the given styles.
This patch:
* ensures that style markups are properly handled by "warning".
* changes 'set/show data-directory' so that file style is used
in warnings and in 'show message'
* changes all other messages in top.c to use file style when appropriate.
* Uses the above data-directory changes in gdb.base/style.exp
2020-01-03 Philippe Waroquiers <philippe.waroquiers@skynet.be>
* ui-file.c (stdio_file::can_emit_style_escape)
(tee_file::can_emit_style_escape): Ensure style is used also on
gdb_stderr when gdb_stderr is a tty supporting styling, similarly
to gdb_stdout.
* main.c (set_gdb_data_directory): Use file style to output the
warning that the given pathname is not a directory.
* top.c (show_history_filename, gdb_safe_append_history)
(show_gdb_datadir): Use file style.
2020-01-03 Philippe Waroquiers <philippe.waroquiers@skynet.be>
* gdb.base/style.exp: Test that warnings are styled.

This introduces a new RAII class that temporarily installs an
alternate signal stack (on systems that have sigaltstack); then
changes the one gdb use of sigaltstack to use this class instead.
This will be used in a later patch, when creating new threads that may
want to handle SIGSEGV.

Adds a configure option --with-system-gdbinit-dir to specify a directory
in which to look for gdbinit files. All files in this directory are
loaded on startup (subject to -n/-nx as usual) as long as the extension
matches a known and enabled scripting language (.gdb/.py/.scm).
This also changes get_ext_lang_of_file to support ".gdb" files, similar
to get_ext_lang_defn's handling of EXT_LANG_GDB.
gdb/ChangeLog:

* configure: Regenerate.
* configure.ac: Add new option --with-system-gdbinit-dir.
* extension.c (get_ext_lang_of_file): Return extension_language_gdb
for a ".gdb" suffix.
* main.c (get_init_files): Change system_gdbinit argument to
a vector and return the files in SYSTEM_GDBINIT_DIR in
addition to SYSTEM_GDBINIT.
(captured_main_1): Update.
(print_gdb_help): Update.
* top.c (print_gdb_configuration): Also print the value of
SYSTEM_GDBINIT_DIR.
gdb/doc/ChangeLog:

* Makefile.in: Also set SYSTEM_GDBINIT_DIR for the info manual
generation.
* gdb.texinfo (many sections): Document new --with-system-gdbinit-dir
option.

declare them here in main.c.

Commit f2aec7f6d14 changed gdb_datadir to std::string.
So, xstrdup-ing the result of relocate_gdb_directory (returning a std::string)
is not needed and creates a leak.
Fix the leak by removing the xstrdup and the not needed c_str ().
Also removes a useless conversion of gdb_datadir to std::string.

renames "flag" to "relocatable" to make it clearer
what it does.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2019-09-06 Christian Biesinger <cbiesinger@google.com>
* defs.h (relocate_gdb_directory): Change int to bool in
signature and rename flag to relocatable.
* main.c (relocate_path): Likewise.
(relocate_gdb_directory): Likewise.

I noticed that init_cli_cmds only installs a command, and so doesn't
need to be handled specially. This patch merges it into
_initialize_cli_cmds.
The help text is constructed dynamically, which is sometimes an
indication that special treatment is needed; but in this case it is
just to insert the value of "gdbinit", which is created at
compile-time and not modified; so this doesn't affect the result.
This version also removes the "gdbinit" global. There's no need for
it, as GDBINIT can be used instead. Note, though, that the help text
in question must still be dynamically constructed, in order to be
i18n-friendly.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-07-11 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com>
* main.c (get_init_files): Use GDBINIT, not gdbinit.
* auto-load.c (file_is_auto_load_safe): Use GDBINIT, not gdbinit.
* top.h (gdbinit): Don't declare.
* cli/cli-cmds.c (init_cli_cmds): Remove, merging contents
into...
(_initialize_cli_cmds): ...here. Use GDBINIT, not gdbinit.
* top.c (gdb_init): Don't call init_cli_cmds.
(gdbinit): Remove.
* cli/cli-cmds.h (init_cli_cmds): Don't declare.

This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.
This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.
I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.
Tested by the buildbot.

Currently, a previous command can be repeated when the user types an
empty line. This is implemented in handle_line_of_input by
returning saved_command_line in case an empty line has been input.
If we want a command to repeat the previous command, we need to save
the previous saved_command_line, as when a command runs, the saved_command_line
already contains the current command line of the command being executed.
As suggested by Tom, the previous_saved_command_line is made static.
At the same time, saved_command_line is also made static.
The support functions/variables for the repeat command logic are now all
located inside top.c.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-05-31 Philippe Waroquiers <philippe.waroquiers@skynet.be>
* top.h (saved_command_line): Remove declaration.
* top.c (previous_saved_command_line, previous_repeat_arguments):
New variables.
(saved_command_line): Make static, define together with other
'repeat variables'.
(dont_repeat): Clear repeat_arguments.
(repeat_previous, get_saved_command_line, save_command_line):
New functions.
(gdb_init): Initialize saved_command_line
and previous_saved_command_line.
* main.c (captured_main_1): Remove saved_command_line initialization.
* event-top.c (handle_line_of_input): Update to use
the new 'repeat' related functions instead of direct access to
saved_command_line.
* command.h (repeat_previous, get_saved_command_line,
save_command_line): New declarations.
(dont_repeat): Add comment.

This makes exception handling more efficient in a few spots, through
the use of const- and rvalue-references.
I wrote this patch by commenting out the gdb_exception copy
constructor and then examining the resulting error messages one by
one, introducing the use of std::move where appropriate.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-04-25 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com>
* xml-support.c (struct gdb_xml_parser) <set_error>: Take an
rvalue reference.

This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed
due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone.
The intermediate layer of gdb_exception_RETURN_MASK_ALL did not seem
needed, so this patch removes it entirely.
gdb/ChangeLog

The GCC Guality testsuite within GCC compiles C/C++ files in GCC at
various optimization levels then debugs them in GDB, checking that
program values can be read. This is done within the dejagnu framework.
The new style options in GDB have broken many of the tests due to the
testsuite being unable to process the new control characters. The fix
in Guality is to either to improve the string matching or to disable
styling on the cli or init file (after checking gdb is recent enough
to support styling).
This fix will also need making an any other testsuites in the wild
that use GDB.
An alternative would be to automatically disable styling when using GDB
in batch mode. The reasoning here is that batch mode is only used when
automating GDB and any output will be processed later either with text
processing tools or viewed in text editors, many of these will not
correctly handle the control characters by default. This ensures GDB
continues to work as expected. Anyone who explicitly wants styling in
batch mode can enable it either in the init file or adding to the batch
file - but that would not be the standard use case.
Patch simply disables style after reading the batch command flag, before
reading in the init file or batch file.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* main.c (captured_main_1): Disable styling in batch mode.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.
gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

Alan recently added a way for BFD library users to check whether they
were in fact loading a compatible version of BFD:
https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2018-10/msg00198.html
It seemed reasonable to me that gdb should do this check as well, in
case someone is dynamically linking against BFD.
Simon pointed out that an earlier version of the patch would cause a
gdb crash if the test failed. This version works around this by
lowering the call to bfd_init and adding a comment explaining where
'error' can safely be called in captured_main_1.

* main.c (captured_main_1): Check return value of bfd_init.

This fixes all the straightforward -Wshadow=local warnings in gdb. A
few standard approaches are used here:
* Renaming an inner (or outer, but more commonly inner) variable;
* Lowering a declaration to avoid a clash;
* Moving a declaration into a more inner scope to avoid a clash,
including the special case of moving a declaration into a loop header.
I did not consider any of the changes in this patch to be particularly
noteworthy, though of course they should all still be examined.

This patch gets rid of this warning on macOS:
CXX main.o
/Users/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/main.c:492:27: error: 'sbrk' is deprecated [-Werror,-Wdeprecated-declarations]
lim_at_start = (char *) sbrk (0);
^
/usr/include/unistd.h:585:1: note: 'sbrk' has been explicitly marked deprecated here
__deprecated __WATCHOS_PROHIBITED __TVOS_PROHIBITED
^
/usr/include/sys/cdefs.h:176:37: note: expanded from macro '__deprecated'
#define __deprecated __attribute__((deprecated))
^
sbrk on macOS is not useful for our purposes, since sbrk(0) always
returns the same value. From what I read, brk/sbrk on macOS is just an
emulation, it always returns a pointer in a 4MB section reserved for
that.
So instead of letting users use "maint set per-command space on" and
print silly results, I think we should just disable that feature for
this platform (as we do for platforms that don't have sbrk).
I defined a HAVE_USEFUL_SBRK macro and used that instead of HAVE_SBRK.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* common/common-defs.h (HAVE_USEFUL_SBRK): Define.
* main.c: Use HAVE_USEFUL_SBRK instead of HAVE_SBRK.

I happened to notice recently that "gdb --version" says:
GNU gdb (GDB) 8.0.50.20170911-git

License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html>

and "show warranty" for details.
This GDB was configured as "x86_64-pc-linux-gnu".
Type "show configuration" for configuration details.
For bug reporting instructions, please see:
<http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/bugs/>.
Find the GDB manual and other documentation resources online at:
<http://www.gnu.org/software/gdb/documentation/>.
For help, type "help".
Type "apropos word" to search for commands related to "word".
This is a bit on the wordy side, but also references interactive
commands, which I think doesn't really make sense for --version.
This patch removes some text from --version, while leaving it in the
"show version" output. It also adds a newline between the URLs and
the "For help, ..." text, because I thought that was easier to read.
Finally, it indents one of the URLs, since that was simpler to read,
but not the other URL, because the current format is specified by the
GNU coding standards section on "--version".
Now the --version output looks like:
GNU gdb (GDB) 8.1.50.20180511-git

License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <http://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html>

This commit moves the path manipulation routines found on utils.c to a
new common/pathstuff.c, and updates the Makefile.in's accordingly.
The routines moved are "gdb_realpath", "gdb_realpath_keepfile" and
"gdb_abspath".
This will be needed because gdbserver will have to call "gdb_abspath"
on my next patch, which implements a way to expand the path of the
inferior provided by the user in order to allow specifying just the
binary name when starting gdbserver, like:
$ gdbserver :1234 a.out
With the recent addition of the startup-with-shell feature on
gdbserver, this scenario doesn't work anymore if the user doesn't have
the current directory listed in the PATH variable.
I had to do a minor adjustment on "gdb_abspath" because we don't have
access to "tilde_expand" on gdbserver, so now the function is using
"gdb_tilde_expand" instead. Otherwise, the code is the same.
Regression tested on the BuildBot, without regressions.

At https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=18653#c7, Andrew
reports that the fix for PR gdb/18653 made GDB useless if you preload
libSegFault.so, because GDB internal-errors on startup:
$ LD_PRELOAD=libSegFault.so gdb

further debugging may prove unreliable.

The internal error comes from the code saving the signal dispositions

gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files

The purpose of this concept is to turn the load of debugging
information off, either globally (via the '--readnever' option), or
objfile-specific. The implementation proposed here is an extension of
the patch distributed with Fedora GDB; looking at the Fedora patch
itself and the history, one can see some reasons why it was never
resubmitted:
- The patch appears to have been introduced as a workaround, at
least initially;
- The patch is far from perfect, as it simply shunts the load of
DWARF debugging information, without really worrying about the
other debug format.
- Who really does non-symbolic debugging anyways?
One use of this feature is when a user simply wants to do the
following sequence: attach, dump core, detach. Loading the debugging
information in this case is an unnecessary cause of delay.
This patch expands the version shipped with Fedora GDB in order to
make the feature available for all the debuginfo backends, not only
for DWARF. It also implements a per-objfile flag which can be
activated by using the "-readnever" command when using the
'add-symbol-file' or 'symbol-file' commands.
It's also worth mentioning that this patch tests whether GDB correctly
fails to initialize if both '--readnow' and '--readnever' options are
passed.

After commit bf4692711232 ("Eliminate catch_errors"), GCC started
inlining captured_command_loop in captured_main. And setting a
breakpoint on captured_command_loop makes the inferior GDB stop in
captured_main, _after_ captured_command_loop's call to
interp_pre_command_loop, which prints the inferior GDB's prompt, has
already executed, confusing the gdb.gdb/ selftest tests:
(gdb) FAIL: gdb.gdb/complaints.exp: run until breakpoint at captured_command_loop
WARNING: Couldn't test self
Debugging GDB with GDB manually, we see:
(top-gdb) b captured_command_loop
Breakpoint 1 at 0x71ee60: file src/gdb/main.c, line 324.
(top-gdb) r
[....]
(gdb) <<<<<< PROMPT HERE
Thread 1 "gdb" hit Breakpoint 1, captured_main (data=<optimized out>) at src/gdb/main.c:1147
1147 captured_command_loop ();
(top-gdb)
Note the stop at 'captured_main', and the "PROMPT HERE" line. That
prompt does not show up when debugging a non-optimized build of GDB.
Fix this by preventing inlining of captured_command_loop.
