2024-06-07gdb: remove get_exec_fileSimon Marchi1-0/+3
I believe that the get_exec_file function is unnecessary, and the code can be simplified if we remove it. Consider for instance when you "run" a program on Linux with native debugging. 1. run_command_1 obtains the executable file from `current_program_space->exec_filename ()` 2. it passes it to `run_target->create_inferior()`, which is `inf_ptrace_target::create_inferior()` in this case, which then passes it to `fork_inferior()` 3. `fork_inferior()` then has a fallback, where if the passed exec file is nullptr, it gets its from `get_exec_file()`. 4. `get_exec_file()` returns `current_program_space->exec_filename ()` - just like the things we started with - or errors out if the current program space doesn't have a specified executable. If there's no exec filename passed in step 1, there's not going to be any in step 4, so it seems pointless to call `get_exec_file()`, we could just error out when `exec_file` is nullptr. But we can't error out directly in `fork_inferior()`, since the error is GDB-specific, and that function is shared with GDBserver. Speaking of GDBserver, all code paths that lead to `fork_inferior()` provide a non-nullptr exec file. Therefore, to simplify things: - Make `fork_inferior()` assume that the passed exec file is not nullptr, don't call `get_exec_file()` - Change some targets (darwin-nat, go32-nat, gnu-nat, inf-ptrace, nto-procfs, procfs) to error out when the exec file passed to their create_inferior method is nullptr. Some targets are fine with a nullptr exec file, so we can't check that in `run_command_1()`. - Add the `no_executable_specified_error()` function, which re-uses the error message that `get_exec_file()` had. - Change some targets (go32-nat, nto-procfs) to not call `get_exec_file()`, since it's pointless for the same reason as in the example above, if it returns, it's going the be the same value as the `exec_file` parameter. Just rely on `exec_file`. - Remove the final use of `get_exec_file()`, in `load_command()`. - Remove the `get_exec_file()` implementations in GDB and GDBserver and remove the shared declaration. Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the `-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include them. Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find. This commit is the result of the following actions: - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to include 2024, - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the file, - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright date, - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've updated them this year to 2024. I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as you spot them.

The "info program" manual entry even says: "Display information about the status of your program: whether it is running or not, what process it is, and why it stopped." ^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This change affects ptrace targets, procfs targets, and Windows. 2022-02-22inf-ptrace: Add an event_pipe to be used for async mode in subclasses.John Baldwin1-0/+15
Subclasses of inf_ptrace_target have to opt-in to using the event_pipe by implementing the can_async_p and async methods. For subclasses which do this, inf_ptrace_target provides is_async_p, async_wait_fd and closes the pipe in the close target method. inf_ptrace_target also provides wrapper routines around the event pipe (async_file_open, async_file_close, async_file_flush, and async_file_mark) for use in target methods such as async. inf_ptrace_target also exports a static async_file_mark_if_open function which can be used in SIGCHLD signal handlers.

- Handle TARGET_WNOHANG by passing WNOHANG to waitpid and returning TARGET_WAITKIND_IGNORE if there are no events to report. - Handle a race in async mode where SIGCHLD might signal the event pipe for an event that has already been reported. If the event was the exit of the last child process, waitpid() will fail with ECHILD rather than returning a pid of 0. For this case, return TARGET_WAITKIND_NO_RESUMED.

Previously this returned a TARGET_WAITKIND_SIGNALLED event for inferior_ptid. However, inferior_ptid is invalid during ::wait() methods after the multi-target changes, so this was triggering an assertion further up the stack.

2021-12-13gdb: make post_startup_inferior a virtual method on inf_ptrace_targetAndrew Burgess1-1/+1
While working on a later patch that required me to understand how GDB starts up inferiors, I was confused by the target_ops::post_startup_inferior method. The post_startup_inferior target function is only called from inf_ptrace_target::create_inferior. Part of the target class hierarchy looks like this: inf_child_target | '-- inf_ptrace_target | |-- linux_nat_target | |-- fbsd_nat_target | |-- nbsd_nat_target | |-- obsd_nat_target | '-- rs6000_nat_target Every sub-class of inf_ptrace_target, except rs6000_nat_target, implements ::post_startup_inferior. The rs6000_nat_target picks up the implementation of ::post_startup_inferior not from inf_ptrace_target, but from inf_child_target. No descendent of inf_child_target, outside the inf_ptrace_target sub-tree, implements ::post_startup_inferior, which isn't really surprising, as they would never see the method called (remember, the method is only called from inf_ptrace_target::create_inferior). What I find confusing is the role inf_child_target plays in implementing, what is really a helper function for just one of its descendents. In this commit I propose that we formally make ::post_startup_inferior a helper function of inf_ptrace_target. To do this I will remove the ::post_startup_inferior from the target_ops API, and instead make this a protected, pure virtual function on inf_ptrace_target. I'll remove the empty implementation of ::post_startup_inferior from the inf_child_target class, and add a new empty implementation to the rs6000_nat_target class. All the other descendents of inf_ptrace_target already provide an implementation of this method and so don't need to change beyond making the method protected within their class declarations. To me, this makes much more sense now. The helper function, which is only called from within the inf_ptrace_target class, is now a part of the inf_ptrace_target class. The only way in which this change is visible to a user is if the user turns on 'set debug target 1'. With this debug flag on, prior to this patch the user would see something like: -> native->post_startup_inferior (...) <- native->post_startup_inferior (2588939) After this patch these lines are no longer present, as the post_startup_inferior is no longer a top level target method. For me, this is an acceptable change.
2021-12-03gdb: change store_waitstatus to return a target_waitstatus by valueSimon Marchi1-1/+2
store_waitstatus is basically a translation function between a status integer and an equivalent target_waitstatus object. It would make sense for it to take the integer as a parameter and return the target_waitstatus by value. Do that, and rename to host_status_to_waitstatus. 2021-10-21gdb, gdbserver: make target_waitstatus safeSimon Marchi1-2/+1
I stumbled on a bug caused by the fact that a code path read target_waitstatus::value::sig (expecting it to contain a gdb_signal value) while target_waitstatus::kind was TARGET_WAITKIND_FORKED. This meant that the active union field was in fact target_waitstatus::value::related_pid, and contained a ptid. The read signal value was therefore garbage, and that caused GDB to crash soon after. Or, since that GDB was built with ubsan, this nice error message: /home/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/linux-nat.c:1271:12: runtime error: load of value 2686365, which is not a valid value for type 'gdb_signal' Despite being a large-ish change, I think it would be nice to make target_waitstatus safe against that kind of bug. As already done elsewhere (e.g. dynamic_prop), validate that the type of value read from the union matches what is supposed to be the active field. - Make the kind and value of target_waitstatus private. - Make the kind initialized to TARGET_WAITKIND_IGNORE on target_waitstatus construction. This is what most users appear to do explicitly. - Add setters, one for each kind. Each setter takes as a parameter the data associated to that kind, if any. This makes it impossible to forget to attach the associated data. - Add getters, one for each associated data type. Each getter validates that the data type fetched by the user matches the wait status kind. - Change "integer" to "exit_status", "related_pid" to "child_ptid", just because that's more precise terminology. - Fix all users. That last point is semi-mechanical. There are a lot of obvious changes, but some less obvious ones. For example, it's not possible to set the kind at some point and the associated data later, as some users did. But in any case, the intent of the code should not change in this patch. This was tested on x86-64 Linux (unix, native-gdbserver and native-extended-gdbserver boards). It was built-tested on x86-64 FreeBSD, NetBSD, MinGW and macOS. The rest of the changes to native files was done as a best effort. If I forgot any place to update in these files, it should be easy to fix (unless the change happens to reveal an actual bug). A following patch will want to use scoped_ignore_sigttou in code shared between GDB and GDBserver. Move it under gdbsupport/. Note that despite what inflow.h/inflow.c's first line says, inflow.c is no longer about ptrace, it is about terminal management. Some other files were unnecessarily including inflow.h, I guess a leftover from the days when inflow.c really was about ptrace. Since this is a GDB 9 -> 10 regression, I would like to push it to gdb-10-branch. This is a follow-up to: https://sourceware.org/pipermail/gdb-patches/2021-February/176202.html This patch fixes a segfault seen when attaching to a process on Solaris. The steps leading to the segfault are: - procfs_target::attach calls do_attach, at this point the inferior's process slot in the target stack is empty. - do_attach adds a thread with `add_thread (&the_procfs_target, ptid)` - in add_thread_silent, the passed target (&the_procfs_target) is passed to find_inferior_ptid - find_inferior_ptid returns nullptr, as there is no inferior with this ptid that has &the_procfs_target as its process target - the nullptr `inf` is passed to find_thread_ptid, which dereferences it, causing a segfault - back in procfs_target::attach, after do_attach, we push the the_procfs_target on the inferior's target stack, although we never reach this because the segfault happens before. To fix this, I think we need to do the same as is done in inf_ptrace_target::attach: push the target early and unpush it in case the attach fails (and keep it if the attach succeeds). Implement it by moving target_unpush_up to target.h, so it can be re-used here. Make procfs_target::attach use it. Note that just like is mentioned in inf_ptrace_target::attach, we should push the target before calling target_pid_to_str, so that calling target_pid_to_str ends up in procfs_target::pid_to_str. This changes TARGET_WNOHANG to be a member of an enum, rather than a define, and also adds a DEF_ENUM_FLAGS_TYPE for this type. Then, it changes target_wait and the various target wait methods to use this type rather than "int". This didn't catch any bugs, but it seems like a decent cleanup nevertheless. I did not change deprecated_target_wait_hook, since that's only used out-of-tree (by Insight), and there didn't seem to be a need. I can't build some of these targets, so I modified them on a best-effort basis. 2020-07-09Don't compare the pid returned from 'wait' against inferior_ptid.John Baldwin1-1/+1
'inf_ptrace::wait' needs to discard termination events reported by detached child processes. Previously it compared the returned pid against the pid in inferior_ptid to determine if a termination event should be discarded or reported. The multi-target changes cleared inferior_ptid to null_ptid in 'wait' target methods, so this was always failing and never reporting exit events. Instead, report termination events whose pid matches any inferior belonging to the current target. Several tests started failing on FreeBSD after the multi-target changes and pass again after this change. gdb/ChangeLog: * inf-ptrace.c (inf_ptrace_target::wait): Don't compare against inferior_ptid.

This commit adds multi-target support to GDB. What this means is that with this commit, GDB can now be connected to different targets at the same time. E.g., you can debug a live native process and a core dump at the same time, connect to multiple gdbservers, etc. Actually, the word "target" is overloaded in gdb. We already have a target stack, with pushes several target_ops instances on top of one another. We also have "info target" already, which means something completely different to what this patch does. So from here on, I'll be using the "target connections" term, to mean an open process_stratum target, pushed on a target stack. This patch makes gdb have multiple target stacks, and multiple process_stratum targets open simultaneously. The user-visible changes / commands will also use this terminology, but of course it's all open to debate. User-interface-wise, not that much changes. The main difference is that each inferior may have its own target connection. A target connection (e.g., a target extended-remote connection) may support debugging multiple processes, just as before. Say you're debugging against gdbserver in extended-remote mode, and you do "add-inferior" to prepare to spawn a new process, like: (gdb) target extended-remote :9999 ... (gdb) start ... (gdb) add-inferior Added inferior 2 (gdb) inferior 2 [Switching to inferior 2 [<null>] (<noexec>)] (gdb) file a.out ... (gdb) start ... At this point, you have two inferiors connected to the same gdbserver. With this commit, GDB will maintain a target stack per inferior, instead of a global target stack. To preserve the behavior above, by default, "add-inferior" makes the new inferior inherit a copy of the target stack of the current inferior. Same across a fork - the child inherits a copy of the target stack of the parent. While the target stacks are copied, the targets themselves are not. Instead, target_ops is made a refcounted_object, which means that target_ops instances are refcounted, which each inferior counting for a reference. What if you want to create an inferior and connect it to some _other_ target? For that, this commit introduces a new "add-inferior -no-connection" option that makes the new inferior not share the current inferior's target. Other than that, debugging is the same as before. Users interact with inferiors and threads as before. The only difference is that inferiors may be bound to processes running in different machines. That's pretty much all there is to it in terms of noticeable UI changes. On to implementation. Since we can be connected to different systems at the same time, a ptid_t is no longer a unique identifier. Instead a thread can be identified by a pair of ptid_t and 'process_stratum_target *', the later being the instance of the process_stratum target that owns the process/thread. Note that process_stratum_target inherits from target_ops, and all process_stratum targets inherit from process_stratum_target. In earlier patches, many places in gdb were converted to refer to threads by thread_info pointer instead of ptid_t, but there are still places in gdb where we start with a pid/tid and need to find the corresponding inferior or thread_info objects. So you'll see in the patch many places adding a process_stratum_target parameter to functions that used to take only a ptid_t. Since each inferior has its own target stack now, we can always find the process_stratum target for an inferior. That is done via a inf->process_target() convenience method. Since each inferior has its own target stack, we need to handle the "beneath" calls when servicing target calls. The solution I settled with is just to make sure to switch the current inferior to the inferior you want before making a target call. Not relying on global context is just not feasible in current GDB. Fortunately, there aren't that many places that need to do that, because generally most code that calls target methods already has the current context pointing to the right inferior/thread. Note, to emphasize -- there's no method to "switch to this target stack". Instead, you switch the current inferior, and that implicitly switches the target stack. In some spots, we need to iterate over all inferiors so that we reach all target stacks. Native targets are still singletons. There's always only a single instance of such targets. Remote targets however, we'll have one instance per remote connection. The exec target is still a singleton. There's only one instance. I did not see the point of instanciating more than one exec_target object. After vfork, we need to make sure to push the exec target on the new inferior. See exec_on_vfork. For type safety, functions that need a {target, ptid} pair to identify a thread, take a process_stratum_target pointer for target parameter instead of target_ops *. Some shared code in gdb/nat/ also need to gain a target pointer parameter. This poses an issue, since gdbserver doesn't have process_stratum_target, only target_ops. To fix this, this commit renames gdbserver's target_ops to process_stratum_target. I think this makes sense. There's no concept of target stack in gdbserver, and gdbserver's target_ops really implements a process_stratum-like target. The thread and inferior iterator functions also gain process_stratum_target parameters. These are used to be able to iterate over threads and inferiors of a given target. Following usual conventions, if the target pointer is null, then we iterate over threads and inferiors of all targets. I tried converting "add-inferior" to the gdb::option framework, as a preparatory patch, but that stumbled on the fact that gdb::option does not support file options yet, for "add-inferior -exec". I have a WIP patchset that adds that, but it's not a trivial patch, mainly due to need to integrate readline's filename completion, so I deferred that to some other time. In infrun.c/infcmd.c, the main change is that we need to poll events out of all targets. See do_target_wait. Right after collecting an event, we switch the current inferior to an inferior bound to the target that reported the event, so that target methods can be used while handling the event. This makes most of the code transparent to multi-targets. See fetch_inferior_event. infrun.c:stop_all_threads is interesting -- in this function we need to stop all threads of all targets. What the function does is send an asynchronous stop request to all threads, and then synchronously waits for events, with target_wait, rinse repeat, until all it finds are stopped threads. Now that we have multiple targets, it's not efficient to synchronously block in target_wait waiting for events out of one target. Instead, we implement a mini event loop, with interruptible_select, select'ing on one file descriptor per target. For this to work, we need to be able to ask the target for a waitable file descriptor. Such file descriptors already exist, they are the descriptors registered in the main event loop with add_file_handler, inside the target_async implementations. This commit adds a new target_async_wait_fd target method that just returns the file descriptor in question. See wait_one / stop_all_threads in infrun.c. The 'threads_executing' global is made a per-target variable. Since it is only relevant to process_stratum_target targets, this is where it is put, instead of in target_ops. You'll notice that remote.c includes some FIXME notes. These refer to the fact that the global arrays that hold data for the remote packets supported are still globals. For example, if we connect to two different servers/stubs, then each might support different remote protocol features. They might even be different architectures, like e.g., one ARM baremetal stub, and a x86 gdbserver, to debug a host/controller scenario as a single program. That isn't going to work correctly today, because of said globals. I'm leaving fixing that for another pass, since it does not appear to be trivial, and I'd rather land the base work first. It's already useful to be able to debug multiple instances of the same server (e.g., a distributed cluster, where you have full control over the servers installed), so I think as is it's already reasonable incremental progress. Current limitations: - You can only resume more that one target at the same time if all targets support asynchronous debugging, and support non-stop mode. It should be possible to support mixed all-stop + non-stop backends, but that is left for another time. This means that currently in order to do multi-target with gdbserver you need to issue "maint set target-non-stop on". I would like to make that mode be the default, but we're not there yet. Note that I'm talking about how the target backend works, only. User-visible all-stop mode works just fine. - As explained above, connecting to different remote servers at the same time is likely to produce bad results if they don't support the exact set of RSP features. I noticed that get_exec_file could return a "const char *". This patch implements this change. I couldn't build all the code -- but I did build Linux native and a mingw cross. Consequently, the NTO code has a hack, where it casts away const. I think this can be removed, but that required more work there, and since I couldn't compile it, I felt it best not to try. In Fedora GDB, we carry the following patch: https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/gdb/blob/8ac06474ff1e2aa4920d14e0666b083eeaca8952/f/gdb-attach-fail-reasons-5of5.patch Its purpose is to try to detect a specific scenario where SELinux's 'deny_ptrace' option is enabled, which prevents GDB from ptrace'ing in order to debug the inferior (PTRACE_ATTACH and PTRACE_TRACEME will fail with EACCES in this case). I like the idea of improving error detection and providing more information to the user (a simple "Permission denied" can be really frustrating), but I don't fully agree with the way the patch was implemented: it makes GDB link against libselinux only for the sake of consulting the 'deny_ptrace' setting, and then prints a warning if ptrace failed and this setting is on. My first thought (and attempt) was to make GDB print a generic warning when a ptrace error happened; this message would just point the user to our documentation, where she could find more information about possible causes for the error (and try to diagnose/fix the problem). This proved to be too simple, and I was convinced that it is actually a good idea to go the extra kilometre and try to pinpoint the specific problem (or problems) preventing ptrace from working, as well as provide useful suggestions on how the user can fix things. Here is the patch I came up with. It implements a new function, 'linux_ptrace_restricted_fail_reason', which does a few things to check what's wrong with ptrace: - It dlopen's "libselinux.so.1" and checks if the "deny_ptrace" option is enabled. - It reads the contents of "/proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope" and checks if it's different than 0. For each of these checks, if it succeeds, the user will see a message informing about the restriction in place, and how it can be disabled. For example, if "deny_ptrace" is enabled, the user will see: # gdb /usr/bin/true ... If GDB can't determine the cause for the failure, it will still print the generic error message which tells the user to check our documentation: There might be restrictions preventing ptrace from working. Please see the appendix "Linux kernel ptrace restrictions" in the GDB documentation for more details. If you are debugging the inferior remotely, the ptrace restriction(s) need to be disabled in the target system (e.g., where GDBserver is running). This means that the patch expands our documentation and creates a new appendix section named "Linux kernel ptrace restrictions", with sub-sections for each possible restriction that might be in place. Notice how, on every message, we instruct the user to "do the right thing" if gdbserver is being used. This is because if the user started gdbserver *before* any ptrace restriction was in place, and then, for some reason, one or more restrictions get enabled, then the error message will be displayed both on gdbserver *and* on the connected GDB. Since the user will be piloting GDB, it's important to explicitly say that the ptrace restrictions are enabled in the target, where gdbserver is running. The current list of possible restrictions is: - SELinux's 'deny_ptrace' option (detected). - YAMA's /proc/sys/kernel/yama/ptrace_scope setting (detected). - seccomp on Docker containers (I couldn't find how to detect). It's important to mention that all of this is Linux-specific; as far as I know, SELinux, YAMA and seccomp are Linux-only features. I tested this patch locally, on my Fedora 30 machine (actually, a Fedora Rawhide VM), but I'm not proposing a testcase for it because of the difficulty of writing one. I touched symtab.h and was surprised to see how many files were rebuilt. I looked into it a bit, and found that defs.h includes gdbarch.h, which in turn includes many things. gdbarch.h is only needed by a minority ofthe files in gdb, so this patch removes the include from defs.h and updates the fallout. I did "wc -l" on the files in build/gdb/.deps; this patch reduces the line count from 139935 to 137030; so there are definitely future build-time savings here. Note that while I configured with --enable-targets=all, it's possible that some *-nat.c file needs an update. I could not test all of these. This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the top level. This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit more tractable. I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too much difficulty. 2019-03-13Change pid_to_str to return std::stringTom Tromey1-4/+4
Currently the target pid_to_str method returns a const char *, so many implementations have a static buffer that they update. This patch changes these methods to return a std::string instead. I think this is cleaner and avoids possible gotchas when calling pid_to_str on different ptids in a single statement. (Though no such calls exist currently.) This also updates various helper functions, and the gdbarch pid_to_str methods. I also made a best effort to fix all the callers, but I can't build some of the *-nat.c files. 2019-03-05Remove excess calls to gdb_flushTom Tromey1-2/+0
A customer noticed some mildly odd MI output, where CLI output was split into multiple MI strings at unusual boundaries, like this: ~"$1 = (b => true" ~", p => 0x407260" This is technically correct according to the MI spec, but still unusual, in that there's no particular reason for the string to be split where it is. I tracked this down to a call to gdb_flush in generic_val_print. Then, I went through all calls to gdb_flush and removed the ones I thought were superfluous. In particular: * Any call in the value-printing code; * Likewise the type-printing code (just a single call); and * Any call that immediately followed a printf that obviously ended with a newline, my belief being that gdb's standard output streams are line buffered (by inheriting the behavior from stdio) Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 29. I didn't add a new test case. I tend to think we don't necessarily want to specify this behavior in the tests. 2018-05-03Convert struct target_ops to C++Pedro Alves1-87/+55
I.e., use C++ virtual methods and inheritance instead of tables of function pointers. Unfortunately, there's no way to do a smooth transition. ALL native targets in the tree must be converted at the same time. I've tested all I could with cross compilers and with help from GCC compile farm, but naturally I haven't been able to test many of the ports. Still, I made a best effort to port everything over, and while I expect some build problems due to typos and such, which should be trivial to fix, I don't expect any design problems. * Implementation notes: - The flattened current_target is gone. References to current_target or current_target.beneath are replaced with references to target_stack (the top of the stack) directly. - To keep "set debug target" working, this adds a new debug_stratum layer that sits on top of the stack, prints the debug, and delegates to the target beneath. In addition, this makes the shortname and longname properties of target_ops be virtual methods instead of data fields, and makes the debug target defer those to the target beneath. This is so that debug code sprinkled around that does "if (debugtarget) ..." can transparently print the name of the target beneath. A patch later in the series actually splits out the shortname/longname methods to a separate structure, but I preferred to keep that chance separate as it is associated with changing a bit the design of how targets are registered and open. - Since you can't check whether a C++ virtual method is overridden, the old method of checking whether a target_ops implements a method by comparing the function pointer must be replaced with something else. Some cases are fixed by adding a parallel "can_do_foo" target_ops methods. It needed tweaks to grok "virtual" in front of the target method name, and for the fact that methods are no longer function pointers. (In particular, the current code parsing the return type was simple because it could simply parse up until the '(' in '(*to_foo)'. It now generates a couple C++ classes that inherit target_ops: dummy_target and debug_target. Since we need to generate the class declarations as well, i.e., we need to emit methods twice, we now generate the code in two passes. - The core_target global is renamed to avoid conflict with the "core_target" class. - ctf/tfile targets init_tracefile_ops is replaced by a base class that is inherited by both ctf and tfile. - bsd-uthread The bsd_uthread_ops_hack hack is gone. It's not needed because nothing was extending a target created by bsd_uthread_target. - remote/extended-remote targets This is a first pass, just enough to C++ify target_ops. A later pass will convert more free functions to methods, and make remote_state be truly per remote instance, allowing multiple simultaneous instances of remote targets. - inf-child/"native" is converted to an actual base class (inf_child_target), that is inherited by all native targets. - GNU/Linux The old weird double-target linux_ops mechanism in linux-nat.c, is gone, replaced by adding a few virtual methods to linux-nat.h's target_ops, called low_XXX, that the concrete linux-nat implementations override. Sort of like gdbserver's linux_target_ops, but simpler, for requiring only one target_ops-like hierarchy, which spares implementing the same method twice when we need to forward the method to a low implementation. The low target simply reimplements the target_ops method directly in that case. There are a few remaining linux-nat.c hooks that would be better converted to low_ methods like above too. E.g.: linux_nat_set_new_thread (t, x86_linux_new_thread); linux_nat_set_new_fork (t, x86_linux_new_fork); linux_nat_set_forget_process That'll be done in a follow up patch. - We can no longer use functions like x86_use_watchpoints to install custom methods on an arbitrary base target. The patch replaces instances of such a pattern with template mixins. For example memory_breakpoint_target defined in target.h, or x86_nat_target in x86-nat.h. - linux_trad_target, MIPS and Alpha GNU/Linux The code in the new linux-nat-trad.h/c files which was split off of inf-ptrace.h/c recently, is converted to a C++ base class, and used by the MIPS and Alpha GNU/Linux ports. - BSD targets The $architecture x NetBSD/OpenBSD/FreeBSD support matrix complicates things a bit. There's common BSD target code, and there's common architecture-specific code shared between the different BSDs. Currently, all that is stiched together to form a final target, via the i386bsd_target, x86bsd_target, fbsd_nat_add_target functions etc. This introduces new fbsd_nat_target, obsd_nat_target and nbsd_nat_target classes that serve as base/prototype target for the corresponding BSD variant. And introduces generic i386/AMD64 BSD targets, to be used as template mixin to build a final target. There are only two inf_ptrace_trad_target users, MIPS GNU/Linux and Alpha GNU/Linux. They both call it via linux_trad_target. Move this code out of inf-ptrace.c to a GNU/Linux-specific new file. Making this code be GNU/Linux-specific simplifies C++ification of target_ops, because we can make the trad target inherit linux_nat instead of inheriting inf_ptrace. That'll be visible in a later patch. Note this makes linux_target_install_ops an extern function, but that is temporary -- the function will disappear once target_ops is made a C++ class with virtual methods, later in the series. Also, I did not rename the functions in the new file for a similar reason.
