Currently there are many prefix commands that do nothing but call
either help_list or cmd_show_list. I happened to notice that one such
call, for "set print type", used the wrong command list parameter,
causing incorrect output.
Rather than fix this bug in isolation, I decided to eliminate this
possibility by adding two new ways to add prefix commands, which
simply route the call to help_list or cmd_show_list, as appropriate.
This makes it impossible for a mismatch to occur.
In some cases, a bit of output was removed; however, I don't think
this output in general was very useful. It seemed redundant with
what's already printed by help_list. A representative example is this
hunk, removed from ada-lang.c:
- printf_unfiltered (_(\
-"\"set ada\" must be followed by the name of a setting.\n"));
This simplified the CLI style set/show commands quite a bit, and
allowed the deletion of a macro.
This also cleans up some unusual code in windows-tdep.c.
Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30. Note that I have no way to build the
go32-nat.c change.

I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:
CXX dcache.o
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
_initialize_dcache (void)
^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:
commit 481695ed5f6e0a8a9c9c50bfac1cdd2b3151e6c9
Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org>
Date: Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700
Remove unnecessary function prototypes.
I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these
functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.

gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
|
|
This adds configury support and an RAII class that can be used to
temporarily block signals that are used by gdb. (This class is not
used in this patch, but it split out for easier review.)
The idea of this patch is that these signals should only be delivered
to the main thread. So, when creating a background thread, they are
temporarily blocked; the blocked state is inherited by the new thread.
The sigprocmask man page says:
The use of sigprocmask() is unspecified in a multithreaded
process; see pthread_sigmask(3).
This patch changes gdb to use pthread_sigmask when appropriate, by
introducing a convenience define.
I've updated gdbserver as well, because I had to touch gdbsupport, and
because the threading patches will make it link against the thread
library.
I chose not to touch the NTO code, because I don't know anything about
that platform and because I cannot test it.
Finally, this modifies an existing spot in the Guile layer to use the
new facility.
gdb/ChangeLog
2019-11-26 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* gdbsupport/signals-state-save-restore.c (original_signal_mask):
Remove comment.
(save_original_signals_state, restore_original_signals_state): Use
gdb_sigmask.
* linux-nat.c (block_child_signals, restore_child_signals_mask)
(_initialize_linux_nat): Use gdb_sigmask.

This makes it clearer that the structs are only used in this file. It
required moving the definition of extension_language_guile further
down in the file, because static structs can't be forward-declared.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2019-10-09 Christian Biesinger <cbiesinger@google.com>
* guile/guile.c (guile_extension_script_ops): Remove forward
declaration and mark as static.
(guile_script_ops): Likewise.
(extension_language_guile): Move further down in the file so
it can reference the definitions for guile_{extension_,}script_ops.

This simplifies memory management. I've also changed some global variables
to std::string accordingly (which store the result of these functions),
but not all because some are used with add_setshow_optional_filename_cmd
which requires a char*.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2019-09-11 Christian Biesinger <cbiesinger@google.com>
* auto-load.c (auto_load_expand_dir_vars): Update.
* defs.h (gdb_datadir): Change to std::string.
(python_libdir): Likewise.
(relocate_gdb_directory): Change return type to std::string.

* top.c (show_gdb_datadir): Update.
* xml-syscall.c (xml_init_syscalls_info): Update.
(init_syscalls_info): Update.

This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.
This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.
I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.
Tested by the buildbot.

ARI pointed out that a recent patch introduced a call to "warning"
with a string that ended in a newline:
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-06/msg00000.html
This is generally forbidden, I believe, because warning adds its own
newline.
This patch removes all of the trailing newlines I was able to find. I
searched for 'warning (.*\\n"' and then fixed the ones where the
newline appeared at the end of the string (some had internal
newlines).
Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.
gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

Since commit
56bcdbea2bed ("Let gdb.execute handle multi-line commands")
trying to use a command like gdb.execute("show commands") in Python
fails. GDB ends up trying to run the "commands" command.
The reason is that GDB gets confused with the special "commands"
command. In process_next_line, the lookup_cmd_1 function returns the
cmd_list_element representing the "commands" sub-command of "show".
Lower, we check the cmd_list_element to see if it matches various
control commands by name, including the "commands" command. This is
where we wrongfully conclude that the executed command must be
"commands", when in reality it was "show commands".
The fix proposed in this patch removes the comparisons by name, instead
comparing the cmd_list_element object by pointer with the objects
created at initialization time.
Tested on the buildbot, though on a single builder (Fedora-x86_64-m64).

This patch fixes various unused variable warnings that are related to
conditional compilation. In these cases, either the variable is now
protected by the same #if as its uses, or the declaration is simply
lowered into the conditionally-compiled block.
gdb/ChangeLog
2018-07-22 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* windows-nat.c (saved_context): Conditionally define.
* remote.c (remote_target::remote_btrace_maybe_reopen):
Conditionally declare "warned".
* inflow.c (sigquit_ours): Conditionally define.
(new_tty): Move "tty" declaration inside #if.
* guile/guile.c (guile_datadir): Conditionally define.
* charset.c (set_be_le_names): Move some declarations inside #if.
* btrace.c (parse_xml_btrace): Move "errcode" declaration inside
#if.

Note: the "may be modified" comment is no longer true nowadays.
gdb/ChangeLog:

* guile/guile.c (gdbscm_execute_gdb_command): Adjust to use
gdbscm_wrap. Use gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr<char> instead of a
cleanup.
|
|
This changes gdbscm_safe_eval_string to return a unique_xmalloc_ptr.
This allows for the removal of some cleanups. It also fixes a
potential latent memory leak in gdbscm_set_backtrace.

Currently command lines are reference counted using shared_ptr only
when attached to breakpoints. This patch changes gdb to use
shared_ptr in commands as well. This allows for the removal of
copy_command_lines.
Note that the change to execute_user_command explicitly makes a new
reference to the command line. This will be used in a later patch.
This simplifies struct command_line based on the observation that a
given command can have at most two child bodies: an "if" can have both
"then" and "else" parts. Perhaps the names I've chosen for the
replacements here are not very good -- your input requested.

gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files

This patch removes some unused variables, found with -Wunused. I have
not removed everything reported by -Wunused, because some expressions
such as
struct type *arg_type = check_typedef (value_type);
in bfin-tdep.c could have an unexpected but important side-effect. I
removed others that I considered more low-risk, such as:
struct gdbarch *gdbarch = get_objfile_arch (objfile);
I tested building with Python 2/Python 3/no Python, with/without expat,
with/without libipt and with/without babeltrace.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* ada-lang.c (ada_collect_symbol_completion_matches): Remove
unused variables.

This changes add_com to take a cmd_const_cfunc_ftype, and then fixes
up all the command implementations.
In most cases this is trivial.
In a couple of places I had to again introduce a temporary non-const
overload. These overloads will be removed when add_info is
constified.

This changes add_prefix_cmd to accept a const-taking function as an
argument; then fixes up all the callers.
In a couple of spots I had to add a non-const overload of a function,
because the function is passed to two different command-adding
"constructors". These overloads are temporary; once constification is
complete they can be removed.
This patch also fixes a typo I happened to notice while constifying.
Note that this touches a couple of files (gnu-nat.c and go32-nat.c)
that I can't build. So, while I made a best-effort there, I am not
certain they will still compile.
Tested by rebuilding.

This introduces command_line_up, a unique_ptr for command_line
objects, and changes many places to use it. This removes a number of
cleanups.
Command lines are funny in that sometimes they are reference counted.
Once there is more C++-ification of some of the users, perhaps all of
these can be changed to use shared_ptr instead.

This replaces a cleanup in execute_gdb_command with an instance of
std::string.
Testing showed that this originally missed a cleanup that was returned
by prevent_dont_repeat. This version of the patch changes
prevent_dont_repeat to return a scoped_restore rather than a cleanup.
2017-01-10 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* top.c (prevent_dont_repeat): Change return type.
* python/python.c (execute_gdb_command): Use std::string.
Update.

Make each UI have its own interpreter list, top level interpreter,
current interpreter, etc. The "interpreter_async" global is not
really specific to an struct interp (it crosses interpreter-exec ...),
so I moved it to "struct ui" directly, while the other globals were
left hidden in interps.c, opaque to the rest of GDB.
gdb/ChangeLog:

The wildebeest-debian-wheezy-i686 buildslave's build is broken due to:
../../binutils-gdb/gdb/python/python.c: In function void _initialize_python():
../../binutils-gdb/gdb/python/python.c:1709:36: error: missing sentinel in function call [-Werror=format]
Reproduced on Fedora 23 by sticking a few:

caught all instances.

gdb/ChangeLog:
Update year range in copyright notice of all files.

Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the
allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when
assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case
more often than not).
The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit
"(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I
validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to
make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I
could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc.
Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing
it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time.
Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This
means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be
dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to
build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't
know.
I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.
Here's the changelog entry, which was not too bad to make despite the
size, thanks to David Malcom's script. I fixed some bits by hand, but
there might be some wrong parts left (hopefully not).

This patch splits the TRY_CATCH macro into three, so that we go from
this:
~~~
volatile gdb_exception ex;
TRY_CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR)
{
}
if (ex.reason < 0)
{
}
~~~
to this:
~~~
TRY
{
}
CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR)
{
}
END_CATCH
~~~
Thus, we'll be getting rid of the local volatile exception object, and
declaring the caught exception in the catch block.
This allows reimplementing TRY/CATCH in terms of C++ exceptions when
building in C++ mode, while still allowing to build GDB in C mode
(using setjmp/longjmp), as a transition step.
TBC, after this patch, is it _not_ valid to have code between the TRY
and the CATCH blocks, like:
TRY
{
}
// some code here.
CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR)
{
}
END_CATCH
Just like it isn't valid to do that with C++'s native try/catch.
By switching to creating the exception object inside the CATCH block
scope, we can get rid of all the explicitly allocated volatile
exception objects all over the tree, and map the CATCH block more
directly to C++'s catch blocks.
The majority of the TRY_CATCH -> TRY+CATCH+END_CATCH conversion was
done with a script, rerun from scratch at every rebase, no manual
editing involved. After the mechanical conversion, a few places
needed manual intervention, to fix preexisting cases where we were
using the exception object outside of the TRY_CATCH block, and cases
where we were using "else" after a 'if (ex.reason) < 0)' [a CATCH
after this patch]. The result was folded into this patch so that GDB
still builds at each incremental step.
END_CATCH is necessary for two reasons:
First, because we name the exception object in the CATCH block, which
requires creating a scope, which in turn must be closed somewhere.
Declaring the exception variable in the initializer field of a for
block, like:
#define CATCH(EXCEPTION, mask) \
for (struct gdb_exception EXCEPTION; \
exceptions_state_mc_catch (&EXCEPTION, MASK); \
EXCEPTION = exception_none)
would avoid needing END_CATCH, but alas, in C mode, we build with C90,
which doesn't allow mixed declarations and code.
Second, because when TRY/CATCH are wired to real C++ try/catch, as
long as we need to handle cleanup chains, even if there's no CATCH
block that wants to catch the exception, we need for stop at every
frame in the unwind chain and run cleanups, then rethrow. That will
be done in END_CATCH.
After we require C++, we'll still need TRY/CATCH/END_CATCH until
cleanups are completely phased out -- TRY/CATCH in C++ mode will
save/restore the current cleanup chain, like in C mode, and END_CATCH
catches otherwise uncaugh exceptions, runs cleanups and rethrows, so
that C++ cleanups and exceptions can coexist.
IMO, this still makes the TRY/CATCH code look a bit more like a
newcomer would expect, so IMO worth it even if we weren't considering
C++.

const works different in C vs C++. In C++, a global "const" variable
has internal linkage by default, resulting in link errors like:
...
extension.o: In function `get_ext_lang_defn(extension_language)':
gdb/extension.c:126: undefined reference to `extension_language_guile'
gdb/extension.c:124: undefined reference to `extension_language_guile'
...
The fix is to define exported const objects with "extern const". But
that in C would not be a definition. So we need to #ifdef C vs C++ in
this case.
EXPORTED_CONST comes from include/ansidecl.h, but in the
feature_to_c.sh case I think it's better to leave the script with no
dependencies.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2015-02-27 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com>
* cp-valprint.c (vtbl_ptr_name): Use EXPORTED_CONST.
* guile/guile.c (extension_language_guile): Use EXPORTED_CONST.
* features/feature_to_c.sh: Tag the generated xml_builtin array
with extern const in C++ mode.

In C, we can forward declare static structure instances. That doesn't
work in C++ though. C++ treats these as definitions. So then the
compiler complains about symbol redefinition, like:
src/gdb/elfread.c:1569:29: error: redefinition of ‘const sym_fns elf_sym_fns_lazy_psyms’
src/gdb/elfread.c:53:29: error: ‘const sym_fns elf_sym_fns_lazy_psyms’ previously declared here
The intent of static here is naturally to avoid making these objects
visible outside the compilation unit. The equivalent in C++ would be
to instead define the objects in the anonymous namespace. But given
that it's desirable to leave the codebase compiling as both C and C++
for a while, this just makes the objects extern.
(base_breakpoint_ops is already declared in breakpoint.h, so we can
just remove the forward declare from breakpoint.c)

The problem here is that if a thread other than gdb's main thread
gets a SIGCHLD (it's an asynchronous signal so the kernel will
essentially pick a random thread) then gdb will hang if it is
in sigsuspend when the SIGCHLD is delivered. The other thread
will see the signal and the sigsuspend won't "wake up".
Guile and libgc should be blocking SIGCHLD in their threads,
but we need to work with Guile 2.0 and libgc 7.4.
The problem first shows up in libgc 7.4 because it is the first
release that enables multiple marker threads by default.

PR 17185 describes a problem with using gdb+guile with libgc 7.4.0.
The symptom is a hang in sigsuspend.
[The thread referenced in the PR has the details.]
It's not clear what the right fix is, or even where the bug is yet.
This patch applies the same workaround Guile has applied.
There is no functionality or real performance loss with this,
and Guile has been using it for awhile.
* configure.ac: Add check for header gc/gc.h.
Add check for function setenv.
* configure: Regenerate.
* config.in: Regenerate.
* guile/guile.c (_initialize_guile): Add workaround for libgc 7.4.0.

Currently there are many calls to help_list that pass the constant -1
as the "class" value. However, the parameter is declared as being of
type enum command_class, and uses of the constant violate this
abstraction.
This patch fixes the error everywhere it occurs in the gdb sources.
Tested by rebuilding.
