The abort happens because a c++ exception escapes to c code, specifically
opncls_bstat in bfd/opncls.c. Compiling with -fexceptions works around this.
Fix this by catching the exception just before it escapes, in stat_trampoline
and likewise in few similar spot.
Add a new template catch_exceptions to do so in a consistent way.
Tested on aarch64-linux.

Most files including gdbcmd.h currently rely on it to access things
actually declared in cli/cli-cmds.h (setlist, showlist, etc). To make
things easy, replace all includes of gdbcmd.h with includes of
cli/cli-cmds.h. This might lead to some unused includes of
cli/cli-cmds.h, but it's harmless, and much faster than going through
the 170 or so files by hand.

Move some declarations related to the "quit" machinery from defs.h to
event-top.h. Most of the definitions associated to these declarations
are in event-top.c. The exceptions are `quit()` and `maybe_quit()`,
that are defined in utils.c. For consistency, move these two
definitions to event-top.c.
Include "event-top.h" in many files that use these things.

commit e8cd90f0 ("Rewrite gdb_bfd_error_handler") broke the clang
build.
The problem here is that print_error_callback isn't marked as being
printf-like, but it calls string_file::vprintf, triggering:
../../binutils-gdb/gdb/gdb_bfd.c:1202:18: error: format string is not a string literal [-Werror,-Wformat-nonliteral]
This patch applies the attribute to this function.
It also removes the attribute from gdb_bfd_error_handler, because that
function is no longer really printf-like.
|
|
This patch rewrites gdb_bfd_error_handler to use 'bfd_print_error' to
generate the text of the warning, and then emits it using 'warning'.
The current code in the tree is a bit wrong because it may do the
wrong thing when BFD uses ones of its printf extensions.
This also adds locking to increment_bfd_error_count. This is
important now that some BFD operations can be done on worker threads.
This approach makes it simpler for worker threads to intercept any
messages.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 38.

BFD recently changed bfd_mmap to use size_t, not bfd_size_type. This
patch updates gdb_bfd_section_data to follow. Without this patch, if
the two types ever differ, gdb would fail to build.

This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

This changes gdb to ensure that gdb's BFD cache is guarded by a lock.
This avoids any races when multiple threads might open a BFD (and thus
use the BFD cache) at the same time.
Currently, this change is not needed because the the main thread waits
for some DWARF scanning to be completed before returning. The only
locking that's required is when opening DWO files, and there's a local
lock to this end in dwarf2/read.c.
However, in the coming patches, the DWARF reader will begin its work
earlier, in the background. This means there is the potential for the
DWARF reader and other code on the main thread to both attempt to open
BFDs at the same time.

This patch adds a new, type-safe variant of gdb_bfd_openr_iovec. In
this approach, the underlying user data is simply an object, the
callbacks are methods, and the "open" function is a function view.

I noticed that some spots in gdb call bfd_set_cacheable after opening
a BFD.
The BFD file cache is a bit odd. BFDs that are opened locally are
unconditionally registered with the cache, and their underlying file
descriptor will always be closed when bfd_cache_close_all is called.
However, only "cacheable" BFDs will be eligible for reopening when
needed -- and by default BFD decides that if a file descriptor is
passed in, then it should not be cacheable. If a non-cacheable BFD's
file descriptor is closed, there is no offical way to reopen it.
gdb needs to call bfd_cache_close_all, because some systems cannot
start an executable when it has an open file descriptor referencing
it.
However, gdb also will sometimes passes an open file descriptor to the
various BFD open functions. And, due to lazy DWARF reading, gdb may
also need to reopen these BFDs.
Rather than having all the callers figure out when exactly to set the
cacheable flag, I think it makes sense to consolidate this logic into
the gdb_bfd.c wrapper functions. It is ok to do this because gdb
always passes a filename to these open functions, so reopening should
work ok.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 38.

The struct target_buffer (in gdb_bfd.c) is used to hold information
about an in-memory BFD object created by GDB. For now this mechanism
is used by GDB when loading information about JIT symfiles.
This commit updates target_buffer (in gdb_bfd.c) to be more C++ like,
and, at the same time, adds the base address of the symfile into the
BFD filename.
Right now, every in-memory BFD is given the filename "<in-memory>".
This filename is visible in things like 'maint info symtabs' and
'maint info line-table'. If there are multiple in-memory BFD objects
then it can be hard to match keep track if which BFD is which. This
commit changes the name to be "<in-memory@ADDRESS>" where ADDRESS is
replaced with the base address for where the in-memory symbol file was
read from.
As an example of how this is useful, here's the output of 'maint info
jit' showing a single loaded JIT symfile:
(gdb) maintenance info jit
jit_code_entry address symfile address symfile size
0x00000000004056b0 0x0000000007000000 17320
And here's part of the output from 'maint info symtabs':
(gdb) maintenance info symtabs
...snip...
{ objfile <in-memory@0x7000000> ((struct objfile *) 0x5258250)
{ ((struct compunit_symtab *) 0x4f0afb0)

fullname (null)
linetable ((struct linetable *) 0x5477880)
}
}
}
I've added a new test that checks the new in-memory file names are
generated correctly, and also checks that the in-memory JIT files can
be dumped back out using 'dump binary memory'.
|
|
The filename argument to gdb_bfd_open_from_target_memory was never
used; this argument had a default value of nullptr, and the only call
to this function, in jit.c, relied on the default value.
In the next commit I'm going to make some changes to the
gdb_bfd_open_from_target_memory function, and, though I could take
account of a filename parameter, it seems pointless to maintain an
unused argument.
This commit removes the filename argument.
There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

Converting from free-form macros to an enum gives a bit of type-safety.
This caught places where we would assign host error numbers to what
should contain a target fileio error number, for instance in
target_fileio_pread.
I added the FILEIO_SUCCESS enumerator, because
remote.c:remote_hostio_parse_result initializes the remote_errno output
variable to 0. It seems better to have an explicit enumerator than to
assign a value for which there is no enumerator. I considered
initializing this variable to FILEIO_EUNKNOWN instead, such that if the
remote side replies with an error and omits the errno value, we'll get
an errno that represents an error instead of 0 (which reprensents no
error). But it's not clear what the consequences of that change would
be, so I prefer to err on the side of caution and just keep the existing
behavior (there is no intended change in behavior with this patch).
Note that remote_hostio_parse_resul still reads blindly what the remote
side sends as a target errno into this variable, so we can still end up
with a nonsensical value here. It's not good, but out of the scope of
this patch.
Convert host_to_fileio_error and fileio_errno_to_host to return / accept
a fileio_error instead of an int, and cascade the change in the whole
chain that uses that.

This commit adds a hook to the BFD error handler for suppressing
identical messages which have been output once already.
It's motivated by this Fedora bug...
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2083315
...in which over 900,000 BFD error messages are output when attaching
to firefox. From the bug report, the messages all say:
BFD: /usr/lib/debug/usr/lib64/firefox/libxul.so-100.0-2.fc35.x86_64.debug: attempt to load strings from a non-string section (number 38)
Since there's no (additional) context which might assist the user in
determining what's wrong, there's really no point in outputting more
than one message. Of course, if BFD should output some
other/different message, it should be output too, but all future
messages identical to those already output should be suppressed.
For the firefox problem, it turned out that there were only 37
sections, but something was referring to section #38. I haven't
investigated further to find out how this came to be.
Despite this problem, useful debugging might still be done, especially
if the user doesn't care about debugging the problematic library.
If it turns out that knowing the quantity of messages might be useful,
I've implemented the suppression mechanism by keeping a count of each
identical message. A new GDB command, perhaps a 'maintenance'
command, could be added to print out each message along with the
count. I haven't implemented this though because I'm not convinced of
its utility. Also, the BFD message printer has support for BFD-
specific format specifiers. The BFD message strings that GDB stores
in its map are sufficient for distinguishing messages from each
other, but are not identical to those output by BFD's default error
handler. So, that problem would need to be solved too.

This rewrites registry.h, removing all the macros and replacing it
with relatively ordinary template classes. The result is less code
than the previous setup. It replaces large macros with a relatively
straightforward C++ class, and now manages its own cleanup.
The existing type-safe "key" class is replaced with the equivalent
template class. This approach ended up requiring relatively few
changes to the users of the registry code in gdb -- code using the key
system just required a small change to the key's declaration.
All existing users of the old C-like API are now converted to use the
type-safe API. This mostly involved changing explicit deletion
functions to be an operator() in a deleter class.
The old "save/free" two-phase process is removed, and replaced with a
single "free" phase. No existing code used both phases.
The old "free" callbacks took a parameter for the enclosing container
object. However, this wasn't truly needed and is removed here as

Now that filtered and unfiltered output can be treated identically, we
can unify the printf family of functions. This is done under the name
"gdb_printf". Most of this patch was written by script.

I found a few spots where filename styling ought to be applied, but is
not.

This commit brings all the changes made by running gdb/copyright.py
as per GDB's Start of New Year Procedure.
For the avoidance of doubt, all changes in this commits were
performed by the script.

gdb_bfd.c contains most of gdb's BFD-related utility functions.
However, gdb_bfd_errmsg is in utils.c. It seemed better to me to move
this out of util.[ch] and into the BFD-related file instead.
Tested by rebuilding.

Make gdb_open_cloexec return a scoped_fd, to encourage using automatic
management of the file descriptor closing. Except in the most trivial
cases, I changed the callers to just release the fd, which retains their
existing behavior. That will allow the transition to using scoped_fd
more to go gradually, one caller at a time.

Note frame #14:
#14 0x0000555555ae4730 in objfile::~objfile (this=0x555556515540, __in_chrg=<optimized out>) at src/gdb/objfiles.c:573
That's a dtor, thus noexcept. That's the reason for the
std::terminate.
The previous patch fixed things such that the exception above isn't
thrown anymore. However, it's possible that e.g., the remote
connection drops just while a user types "nosharedlibrary", or some
other reason that leads to objfile::~objfile, and then we end up the
same std::terminate problem.
Also notice that frames #9-#11 are BFD frames:
#9 0x0000555555e09e3f in opncls_bclose (abfd=0x555556bc27e0) at src/bfd/opncls.c:599
#10 0x0000555555e0a2c7 in bfd_close_all_done (abfd=0x555556bc27e0) at src/bfd/opncls.c:847
#11 0x0000555555e0a27a in bfd_close (abfd=0x555556bc27e0) at src/bfd/opncls.c:814
BFD is written in C and thus throwing exceptions over such frames may
either not clean up properly, or, may abort if bfd is not compiled
with -fasynchronous-unwind-tables (x86-64 defaults that on, but not
all GCC ports do).
Thus frame #8 seems like a good place to swallow exceptions. More so
since in this spot we already ignore target_fileio_close return
errors. That's what this commit does. Without the previous fix, we'd
see:
(gdb) detach
Detaching from program: target:/any/program, process 2197701
Ending remote debugging.
[Inferior 1 (process 2197701) detached]
warning: cannot close "target:/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2": Remote connection closed

This function allows to create a BFD handle using an accessible memory
range in a target memory. It is currently contained in a JIT module but
this functionality may be of wider usefullness - for example, reading
ELF binaries contained within a core dump.

* jit.c (mem_bfd*, bfd_open_from_target_memory): Removed.
* gdb_bfd.h (gdb_bfd_open_from_target_memory): New function.
* gdb_bfd.c (mem_bfd*, gdb_bfd_open_from_target_memory): New functions.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

This changes gdb_bfd_close_or_warn to avoid bfd_map_over_sections, in
favor of iteration.
gdb/ChangeLog
2020-09-19 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com>
* gdb_bfd.c (free_one_bfd_section): Remove 'abfd' and 'ignore'
parameters.
(gdb_bfd_close_or_warn): Use foreach.
|
|
The previous patch introduced an uninitialized warning in
gdb_bfd_open. The problem was that "abfd" was being used without
being initialized.
This patch fixes the problem by calling bfd_fopen in the branch where
"fstat" has failed.
gdb/ChangeLog
2020-09-08 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com>
* gdb_bfd.c (gdb_bfd_open): Call bfd_fopen when fstat fails.
|
|
gdb caches BFDs that come from ordinary files. This code turns out to
have a bug where the hash table can become corrupted, causing gdb to
crash.
When gdb_bfd_open opens the BFD, it uses fstat to get the BFD's mtime.
This is used when inserting the entry into gdb_bfd_cache. Then, the
function creates the gdb_bfd_data object as a side effect of calling
new_reference. This object is used when finding objects in the hash
table, and its constructor uses bfd_get_mtime. So, if the file
changes between the time the BFD is put into the cache and the time
that this object is created, the hash table will be incorrect. When
the BFD is later deleted, its entry in the hash table will not be
found, and at this point the hash table will point to invalid memory.
This patch fixes the bug by ensuring that the mtime, and other
relevant attributes comgin from stat, that are used for insertion are
also used when creating the gdb_bfd_data.
This obsoletes an earlier patch that had split this into two parts
(surrounding a patch to use bfd_stat more consistently). This version
merges the two patches, in the interest of correctness.
gdb/ChangeLog
2020-09-08 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com>
PR win32/25302:
* gdb_bfd.c (gdb_bfd_data): Add "st" parameter.
(gdb_bfd_init_data): New function.
(gdb_bfd_open, gdb_bfd_ref): Use gdb_bfd_init_data.

The patch makes GDB do exec-file-mismatch validation by comparing
build IDs instead of the current method of comparing filenames.
Currently, the exec-file-mismatch feature simply compares filenames to
decide whether the exec file loaded in gdb and the exec file the
target reports is running match. This causes false positives when
remote debugging, because it'll often be the case that the paths in
the host and the target won't match. And of course misses the case of
the files having the same name but being actually different files
(e.g., different builds).
This also broke many testcases when running against gdbserver, causing
tests to be skipped like (here native-extended-gdbserver):
(gdb) run
Starting program: /home/pedro/gdb/binutils-gdb/build/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.base/argv0-symlink/argv0-symlink-filelink
warning: Mismatch between current exec-file /home/pedro/gdb/binutils-gdb/build/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.base/argv0-symlink/argv0-symlink-filelink

exec-file-mismatch handling is currently "ask"

(gdb) UNSUPPORTED: gdb.btrace/buffer-size.exp: target does not support record-btrace
The former case is about GDB not realizing the two files are the same,
because one of the them is a symlink to the other. The latter case is
about GDB realizing that one file is a copy of the other.
Over the years, the toolchain has settled on build ID matching being
the canonical method to match core dumps to executables, and
executables with no debug info to their debug info.
This patch makes us use build IDs to match the running image of a
binary with its version loaded in gdb, which may or may not have debug
info. This is very much like the core dump/executable matching.
The change to gdb_bfd_open is necessary to get rid of the "transfers
from remote targets can be slow" warning when we open the remote file
to read its build ID:
(gdb) r
Starting program: /home/pedro/gdb/binutils-gdb/build/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.base/break/break
Reading /home/pedro/gdb/binutils-gdb/build/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.base/argv0-symlink/argv0-symlink from remote target...
warning: File transfers from remote targets can be slow. Use "set sysroot" to access files locally instead.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
warning: Mismatch between current exec-file /home/pedro/gdb/binutils-gdb/build/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.base/break/break
and automatically determined exec-file /home/pedro/gdb/binutils-gdb/build/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.base/argv0-symlink/argv0-symlink
exec-file-mismatch handling is currently "ask"
Load new symbol table from "/home/pedro/gdb/binutils-gdb/build/gdb/testsuite/outputs/gdb.base/argv0-symlink/argv0-symlink"? (y or n)
While trying this out, I was worried that bfd would read a lot of
stuff from the binary in order to extract the build ID, making it
potentially slow, but turns out we don't read all that much. Maybe a
couple hundred bytes, and most of it seemingly is the read-ahead
cache. So I'm not worried about that. Otherwise I'd consider whether
a new qXfer:buildid:read would be better. But I'm happy that we
seemingly don't need to worry about it.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2020-05-19 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com>
* NEWS (set exec-file-mismatch): Adjust entry.
* exec.c: Include "build-id.h".
(validate_exec_file): Try to match build IDs instead of filenames.
* gdb_bfd.c (struct gdb_bfd_open_closure): New.
(gdb_bfd_iovec_fileio_open): Adjust to use gdb_bfd_open_closure
and pass down 'warn_if_slow'.
(gdb_bfd_open): Add 'warn_if_slow' parameter. Use
gdb_bfd_open_closure to pass it down.
* gdb_bfd.h (gdb_bfd_open): Add 'warn_if_slow' parameter.
gdb/doc/ChangeLog:
2020-05-19 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com>
* gdb.texinfo (Attach): Update exec-file-mismatch description to
mention build IDs.
(Separate Debug Files): Add "build id" anchor.

This basically makes target_fileio_open_1 extern, renamed to
target_fileio_open, and eliminates the current
target_fileio_open_warn_if_slow and target_fileio_open.
A following parameter will want to change gdb_bfd_iovec_fileio_open,
the only caller of target_fileio_open_warn_if_slow, to pass down
"warn_if_slow" true/false from the caller, instead of hardcoding
"warn_if_slow" true.
gdb/ChangeLog:
2020-05-19 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com>
* gdb_bfd.c (gdb_bfd_iovec_fileio_open): Adjust.
* target.c (target_fileio_open_1): Rename to target_fileio_open
and make extern. Use bool.
(target_fileio_open, target_fileio_open_warn_if_slow): Delete.
(target_fileio_read_alloc_1): Adjust.
* target.h (target_fileio_open): Add 'warn_if_slow' parameter.
(target_fileio_open_warn_if_slow): Delete declaration.

is_linked_with_cygwin_dll
The function is_linked_with_cygwin_dll currently uses
gdb_bfd_map_section to get some section contents. This is not ideal
because that memory, which is only used in this function, can't be
released. Instead, it was suggested to use
bfd_get_full_section_contents.
However, bfd_get_full_section_contents returns a newly allocated buffer,
which is not very practical to use with C++ automatic memory management
constructs. I decided to make gdb_bfd_get_full_section_contents, a
small alternative to bfd_get_full_section_contents. It is a small
wrapper around bfd_get_section_contents which returns the full contents
of the section in a gdb::byte_vector.
gdb_bfd_get_full_section_contents could be used at many places that
already allocate a vector of the size of the section and then call
bfd_get_section_contents. I think these call sites can be updated over
time.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* gdb_bfd.h: Include gdbsupport/byte-vector.h.
(gdb_bfd_get_full_section_contents): New declaration.
* gdb_bfd.c (gdb_bfd_get_full_section_contents): New function.
* windows-tdep.c (is_linked_with_cygwin_dll): Use
gdb_bfd_get_full_section_contents.

I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:
CXX dcache.o
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
_initialize_dcache (void)
^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:
commit 481695ed5f6e0a8a9c9c50bfac1cdd2b3151e6c9
Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org>
Date: Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700
Remove unnecessary function prototypes.
I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these
functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.

gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
|
|
Removes vec.c and vec.h from the source tree, and remove all the
remaining includes of vec.h. There should be no user visible changes
after this commit.
I did have a few issues rebuilding GDB after applying this patch due
to cached dependencies, I found that running this command in the build
directory resolved my build issues without requiring a 'make clean':
rm -fr gdb/gdbserver/gdbsupport/.deps/
