Nothing in defs.h actually uses this. Add some includes for some spots using things from hashtab.h. Note that if the GDB build doesn't use libxxhash, hashtab.h is included by gdbsupport/common-utils.h, so all files still see hashtab.h. It puzzled me for some time why I didn't see build failures in my build (which didn't use libxxhash) but the buildbot gave build failures (it uses libxxhash). 2024-02-27Add extension_language_ops::shutdownTom Tromey1-0/+3
Right now, Python is shut down via a final cleanup. However, it seems to me that it is better for extension languages to be shut down explicitly, after all the ordinary final cleanups are run. The main reason for this is that a subsequent patch adds another case like finalize_values; and rather than add a series of workarounds for Python shutdown, it seemed better to let these be done via final cleanups, and then have Python shutdown itself be the special case.
2024-02-20gdb: pass frames as `const frame_info_ptr &`Simon Marchi1-1/+1
We currently pass frames to function by value, as `frame_info_ptr`. This is somewhat expensive: - the size of `frame_info_ptr` is 64 bytes, which is a bit big to pass by value - the constructors and destructor link/unlink the object in the global `frame_info_ptr::frame_list` list. This is an `intrusive_list`, so it's not so bad: it's just assigning a few points, there's no memory allocation as if it was `std::list`, but still it's useless to do that over and over. As suggested by Tom Tromey, change many function signatures to accept `const frame_info_ptr &` instead of `frame_info_ptr`. Some functions reassign their `frame_info_ptr` parameter, like: void the_func (frame_info_ptr frame) { for (; frame != nullptr; frame = get_prev_frame (frame)) { ... } } I wondered what to do about them, do I leave them as-is or change them (and need to introduce a separate local variable that can be re-assigned). I opted for the later for consistency. It might not be clear why some functions take `const frame_info_ptr &` while others take `frame_info_ptr`. Also, if a function took a `frame_info_ptr` because it did re-assign its parameter, I doubt that we would think to change it to `const frame_info_ptr &` should the implementation change such that it doesn't need to take `frame_info_ptr` anymore. This commit is the result of the following actions: - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to include 2024, - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the file, - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright date, - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've updated them this year to 2024. I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as you spot them.

Since GDB now requires C++17, we don't need the internally maintained gdb::optional implementation. This patch does the following replacing: - gdb::optional -> std::optional - gdb::in_place -> std::in_place - #include "gdbsupport/gdb_optional.h" -> #include <optional> This change has mostly been done automatically. One exception is gdbsupport/thread-pool.* which did not use the gdb:: prefix as it already lives in the gdb namespace. 2023-11-14gdb: add an extension language hook for missing debug infoAndrew Burgess1-0/+62
This commit adds a new extension_language_ops hook which allows an extension to handle the case where GDB can't find a separate debug information file for a particular objfile. This commit doesn't actually implement the hook for any of GDB's extension languages, the next commit will do that. This commit just adds support for the hook to extension-priv.h and extension.[ch], and then reworks symfile-debug.c to call the hook. Right now the hook will always return its default value, which means GDB should do nothing different. As such, there should be no user visible changes after this commit. I'll give a brief description of what the hook does here so that we can understand the changes in symfile-debug.c. The next commit adds a Python implementation for this new hook, and gives a fuller description of the new functionality. Currently, when looking for separate debug information GDB tries three things, in this order: 1. Use the build-id to find the required debug information, 2. Check for .gnu_debuglink section and use that to look up the required debug information, 3. Check with debuginfod to see if it can supply the required information. The new extension_language_ops::handle_missing_debuginfo hook is called if all three steps fail to find any debug information. The hook has three possible return values: a. Nothing, no debug information is found, GDB continues without the debug information for this objfile. This matches the current behaviour of GDB, and is the default if nothing is implementing this new hook, b. Install debug information into a location that step #1 or #2 above would normally check, and then request that GDB repeats steps #1 and #2 in the hope that GDB will now find the debug information. If the debug information is still not found then GDB carries on without the debug information. If the debug information is found the GDB loads it and carries on, c. Return a filename for a file containing the required debug information. GDB loads the contents of this file and carries on. The changes in this commit mostly involve placing the core of objfile::find_and_add_separate_symbol_file into a loop which allows for steps #1 and #2 to be repeated. We take care to ensure that debuginfod is only queried once, the first time through. The assumption is that no extension is going to be able to control the replies from debuginfod, so there's no point making a second request -- and as these requests go over the network, they could potentially be slow. The warnings that find_and_add_separate_symbol_file collects are displayed only once assuming that no debug information is found. If debug information is found, even after the extension has operated, then the warnings are not shown; remember, these are warnings from GDB about failure to find any suitable debug information, so it makes sense to hide these if debug information is found. This changes GDB to use frame_info_ptr instead of frame_info * The substitution was done with multiple sequential `sed` commands: sed 's/^struct frame_info;/class frame_info_ptr;/' sed 's/struct frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' - which left some issues in a few files, that were manually fixed. sed 's/\<frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' sed 's/frame_info_ptr $/frame_info_ptr/g' - used to remove whitespace problems. 2022-06-15gdb: add extension language print_insn hookAndrew Burgess1-0/+10
This commit is setup for the next commit. In the next commit I will add a Python API to intercept the print_insn calls within GDB, each print_insn call is responsible for disassembling, and printing one instruction. After the next commit it will be possible for a user to write Python code that either wraps around the existing disassembler, or even, in extreme situations, entirely replaces the existing disassembler. This commit does not add any new Python API. What this commit does is put the extension language framework in place for a print_insn hook. There's a new callback added to 'struct extension_language_ops', which is then filled in with nullptr for Python and Guile. Finally, in the disassembler, the code is restructured so that the new extension language function ext_lang_print_insn is called before we delegate to gdbarch_print_insn. After this, the next commit can focus entirely on providing a Python implementation of the new print_insn callback. There should be no user visible change after this commit.
2022-02-14gdb: use python to colorize disassembler outputAndrew Burgess1-0/+8
This commit adds styling support to the disassembler output, as such two new commands are added to GDB: set style disassembler enabled on|off show style disassembler enabled In this commit I make use of the Python Pygments package to provide the styling. I did investigate making use of libsource-highlight, however, I found the highlighting results to be inferior to those of Pygments; only some mnemonics were highlighted, and highlighting of register names such as r9d and r8d (on x86-64) was incorrect. To enable disassembler highlighting via Pygments, I've added a new extension language hook, which is then implemented for Python. This hook is very similar to the existing hook for source code colorization. One possibly odd choice I made with the new hook is to pass a gdb.Architecture through, even though this is currently unused. The reason this argument is not used is that, currently, styling is performed identically for all architectures. However, even though the Python function used to perform styling of disassembly output is not part of any documented API, I don't want to close the door on a user overriding this function to provide architecture specific styling. To do this, the user would inevitably require access to the gdb.Architecture, and so I decided to add this field now. The styling is applied within gdb_disassembler::print_insn, to achieve this, gdb_disassembler now writes its output into a temporary buffer, styling is then applied to the contents of this buffer. Finally the gdb_disassembler buffer is copied out to its final destination stream. There's a new test to check that the disassembler output includes some escape sequences, though I don't check for specific colours; the precise colors will depend on which instructions are in the disassembler output, and, I guess, how pygments is configured. The only negative change with this commit is how we currently style addresses in GDB. Currently, when the disassembler wants to print an address, we call back into GDB, and GDB prints the address value using the `address` styling, and the symbol name using `function` styling. After this commit, if pygments is used, then all disassembler styling is done through pygments, and this include the address and symbol name parts of the disassembler output. I don't know how much of an issue this will be for people. There's already some precedent for this in GDB when we look at source styling. For example, function names in styled source listings are not styled using the `function` style, but instead, either GNU Source Highlight, or pygments gets to decide how the function name should be styled. If the Python pygments library is not present then GDB will continue to behave as it always has, the disassembler output is mostly unstyled, but the address and symbols are styled using the `address` and `function` styles, as they are today. However, if the user does `set style disassembler enabled off`, then all disassembler styling is switched off. This obviously covers the use of pygments, but also includes the minimal styling done by GDB when pygments is not available.

Now that both Python and Guile are fully initialized from their respective finish_initialization methods, the "finish" in the method name doesn't really make sense; initialization starts _and_ finishes with that method. As such, this commit renames finish_initialization to just initialize. This changes the extension language pretty-printers to use the value API. Note that new functions were needed, for both Guile and Python. Currently both languages always wrap values by removing the values from the value chain. This makes sense to avoid strange behavior with watchpoints, and to avoid excessive memory use. 2020-01-21Allow use of Pygments to colorize source codeTom Tromey1-0/+9
While GNU Source Highlight is good, it's also difficult to build and distribute. For one thing, it needs Boost. For another, it has an unusual configuration and installation setup. Pygments, a Python library, doesn't suffer from these issues, and so I thought it would be a reasonable fallback. This patch implements this idea. GNU Source Highlight is preferred, but if it is unavailable (or fails), the extension languages are tried. This patch also implements support for Pygments. 2019-07-29Implement 'set print frame-info|frame-arguments presence'.Philippe Waroquiers1-1/+4
New settings allow to better control what frame information is printed. 'set print frame-info' allows to override the default frame information printed when a GDB command prints a frame. The backtrace command has a new option -frame-info to override this global setting. It is now possible to have very short frame information by using the new 'set print frame-arguments presence' and 'set print frame-info short-location'. Combined with 'set print address off', a backtrace will only show the essential information to see the function call chain, e.g.: (gdb) set print address off (gdb) set print frame-arguments presence (gdb) set print frame-info short-location (gdb) bt #0 break_me () #1 call_me (...) #2 main () (gdb) This is handy in particular for big backtraces with functions having many arguments. Python frame filter printing logic has been updated to respect the new setting in non MI mode. Also, the default frame information printed was inconsistent when backtrace was printing the frame information itself, or when the python frame filtering code was printing the frame information. This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the top level. This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit more tractable. I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too much difficulty. When running gdb in the build directory without passing --data-directory, I noticed I could provoke a crash by: $ ./gdb -nx ./gdb (gdb) ptype/o struct dwarf2_per_objfile ... and then trying to "q" out at the pagination prompt. valgrind complained about an uninitialized use of py_type_printers. Initializing this member fixes the bug. I believe this bug can occur even when the gdb Python libraries are available, for example if get_type_recognizers fails. Tested by hand on x86-64 Fedora 26. 2018-02-26Make "bt N" print correct number of frames when using a frame filterTom Tromey1-0/+3
PR python/16497 notes that using "bt" with a positive argument prints the wrong number of frames when a frame filter is in use. Also, in this case, the non-frame-filter path will print a message about "More stack frames" when there are more; but this is not done in the frame-filter case. The first problem is that backtrace_command_1 passes the wrong value to apply_ext_lang_frame_filter -- that function takes the final frame's number as an argument, but backtrace_command_1 passes the count, which is off by one. The solution to the second problem is to have the C stack-printing code stop at the correct number of frames and then print the message. Tested using the buildbot. I think that the clone method of xmethod_worker can be removed. It is only used in find_overload_match, to clone an xmethod we want to keep. Instead, we can just std::move it out of the vector and into value_from_xmethod. value_from_xmethod creates a value that will own the xmethod_worker from that point. The initial goal of this patch was to remove the usage of VEC(xmethod_worker_ptr) and corresponding cleanups. I ended up having to C++ify the xmethod_worker code, to be able to have xmethod_workers free their data in destructors, and therefore be able to use vectors of xmethod_worker unique_ptr. The operations in extension_language_ops that act on one instance of xmethod_worker (get result type, get args type, invoke) are transformed to methods of xmethod_worker. xmethod_worker becomes an abstract base class with virtual pure methods which python_xmethod_worker implements. The only xmethod-related operation left in extension_language_ops is get_matching_xmethod_workers, which returns a list of xmethod_workers. The changes are relatively straightforward, but here are some notes on things that may raise eyebrows: - I was not really comfortable with the value_of_xmethod function. At first it looks like a simple getter, so I considered making it a method of xmethod_worker. But actually it creates a value and transfers the ownership of the xmethod_worker to it. It would be a bit weird and error-prone if calling a method on an object silently removed the ownership of the object from the caller. To reflect the behavior more accurately, I renamed it to value_from_xmethod and made it accept an rvalue-reference (so the caller knows it gives away the ownership). I noticed the backlink from xmethod_worker to its owning value was not used, so I removed it. - Some code, like get_matching_xmethod_workers, made each callee fill a new vector, which was then merged in the result vector.
