This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script,
which automated the update of the copyright year range for all
source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include
year 2023.

While working on another patch, Simon pointed out that GDB could be
improved by marking the functions passed to the disassembler as
noexcept.

The reason this is important is the on some hosts, libopcodes, being C
code, will not be compiled with support for handling exceptions. As
such, an attempt to throw an exception over libopcodes code will cause
GDB to terminate.
See bug gdb/29712 for an example of when this happened.
In this commit all the functions that are passed to the disassembler,
and which might be used as callbacks by libopcodes are marked
noexcept.
Ideally, I would have liked to change these typedefs:
using read_memory_ftype = decltype (disassemble_info::read_memory_func);
using memory_error_ftype = decltype (disassemble_info::memory_error_func);
using print_address_ftype = decltype (disassemble_info::print_address_func);
using fprintf_ftype = decltype (disassemble_info::fprintf_func);
using fprintf_styled_ftype = decltype (disassemble_info::fprintf_styled_func);
which are declared in disasm.h, as including the noexcept keyword.
However, when I tried this, I ran into this warning/error:

So I've left that change out. This does mean that if somebody adds a
new use of the disassembler classes in the future, and forgets to mark
the callbacks as noexcept, this will compile fine. We'll just have to
manually check for that during review.

This commit started from an observation I made while working on some
other disassembler patches, that is, that the function
gdb_buffered_insn_length, is broken ... sort of.
I noticed that the gdb_buffered_insn_length function doesn't set up
the application data field if the disassemble_info structure.
Further, I noticed that some architectures, for example, ARM, require
that the application_data field be set, see gdb_print_insn_arm in
arm-tdep.c.
And so, if we ever use gdb_buffered_insn_length for ARM, then GDB will
likely crash. Which is why I said only "sort of" broken. Right now
we don't use gdb_buffered_insn_length with ARM, so maybe it isn't
broken yet?
Anyway to prove to myself that there was a problem here I extended the
disassembler self tests in disasm-selftests.c to include a test of
gdb_buffered_insn_length. As I run the test for all architectures, I
do indeed see GDB crash for ARM.
To fix this we need gdb_buffered_insn_length to create a disassembler
that inherits from gdb_disassemble_info, but we also need this new
disassembler to not print anything.
And so, I introduce a new gdb_non_printing_disassembler class, this is
a disassembler that doesn't print anything to the output stream.
I then observed that both ARC and S12Z also create non-printing
disassemblers, but these are slightly different. While the
disassembler in gdb_non_printing_disassembler reads the instruction
from a buffer, the ARC and S12Z disassemblers read from target memory
using target_read_code.
And so, I further split gdb_non_printing_disassembler into two
sub-classes, gdb_non_printing_memory_disassembler and
gdb_non_printing_buffer_disassembler.
The new selftests now pass, but otherwise, there should be no user
visible changes after this commit.

In print_one_insn_test we have this cluster of skipped tests:

When running the print_one_insn selftests with -v, I get:

The insn is written to gdb_stdout, and there is code in the selftest to add a
newline after the insn, which writes to stream().
The stream() ui_file points into a string buffer, which the disassembler uses
before writing to gdb_stdout, so writing into it after the disassembler has
finished has no effect.
Fix this by using gdb_stdlog and debug_printf (which is what the unit test
infrastructure itself uses) instead, such that we have:

When running selftest print_one_insn::ez80-adl we run into this warning:

When running the selftests, I run into:
...

The warning can easily be reproduced outside the selftests by doing:

and can be prevented by first doing "set osabi none".
Fix the warning by setting osabi to none while doing selftests that iterate
over all architectures.
This causes a regression in the print_one_insn selftests for the ARC
architecture.
The problem is pre-existing, and can be demonstrated (already without this
patch) using:

For ARC, we use the generic case in print_one_insn_test, containing this code:

The problem is that with osabi linux we trigger:

supported osabi's to makes sure we trigger arc_linux_breakpoint_kind_from_pc
which will give us a usable instruction to disassemble.

Now that filtered and unfiltered output can be treated identically, we
can unify the printf family of functions. This is done under the name
"gdb_printf". Most of this patch was written by script.

This commit brings all the changes made by running gdb/copyright.py
as per GDB's Start of New Year Procedure.
For the avoidance of doubt, all changes in this commits were
performed by the script.

The disassembly tests in "maint selftest" will fail on x86-linux.
This happens because opcodes rejects an attempt to disassemble for an
arch with a 64-bit address size when bfd_vma is 32-bit.
This patch avoids this problem by avoiding the test in this case. I
chose to do it this way because this seems to be the only situation
where opcodes checks the size of bfd_vma.
For v2 of this patch, I've also updated memory_error_test to do the
same thing. This is needed due to the "improve error reporting from
the disassembler" patch.

The print_one_insn selftest in gdb/disasm-selftests.c contains:

I noticed that the ARC print_one_insn selftest was failing. The
problem is that in print_one_insn_test the arc case falls through into
the special case that handles nios2, score, and riscv.
The special case for these targets hard codes the breakpoint kind to
'4'. This is find for bare metal arc (see arc-tdep.c,
arc_sw_breakpoint_from_kind), however, for arc/linux only breakpoint
kind '2' is supported (see arc-linux-tdep.c,
arc_linux_sw_breakpoint_from_kind).
So the code in print_one_insn_test as it is currently written passed
in an invalid breakpoint kind, this leads to GDB trying to disassemble
unexpected memory.
The fix is to reorder the code in print_one_insn_test so that the arc
case falls through into the default case. In the default we no longer
hard code the breakpoint kind, and everything should be good.
Additionally, given the arc code only expects specific breakpoint kind
values, I thought it would be nice to add some gdb_assert to validate
things. This assert would have triggered in this case and made it
easier to find the error.
After this commit, configure GDB with --enable-targets=all, then run
gdb.gdb/unittest.exp, there should no longer be any failures.

While working on the preceding selftests patches, I noticed that some
selftests-specific files are included in the build even when selftests
are disabled, namely disasm-selftest.c and gdbarch-selftests.c. These
files are entirely #if'ed out when building with selftests disabled.
This is not a huge problem, but I think it would make more sense if
these files were simply not built.
With this patch, I propose to put all the selftests-specific source
files into a SELFTESTS_SRCS Makefile variable (even selftest-arch.c,
which is currently added by the configure script).

(SELFTESTS_SRCS): ... this. Add disasm-selftests.c,

I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

I touched symtab.h and was surprised to see how many files were
rebuilt. I looked into it a bit, and found that defs.h includes
gdbarch.h, which in turn includes many things.
gdbarch.h is only needed by a minority ofthe files in gdb, so this
patch removes the include from defs.h and updates the fallout.
I did "wc -l" on the files in build/gdb/.deps; this patch reduces the
line count from 139935 to 137030; so there are definitely future
build-time savings here.
Note that while I configured with --enable-targets=all, it's possible
that some *-nat.c file needs an update. I could not test all of
these. The buildbot caught a few problems along these lines.

This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.
This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.
I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.
Tested by the buildbot.

This renames the gdb exception types. The old types were only needed
due to the macros in common-exception.h that are now gone.
The intermediate layer of gdb_exception_RETURN_MASK_ALL did not seem
needed, so this patch removes it entirely.

Andreas Schwab and John Baldwin pointed out some bugs in the header
sorting patch; and I noticed that the output was not correct when
limited to a subset of files (a bug in my script).
So, I'm reverting the patch. I may try again after fixing the issues

This patch sorts the include files for the files [a-f]*.[chyl].
The patch was written by a script.
Tested by the buildbot.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

This fixes all the straightforward -Wshadow=local warnings in gdb. A
few standard approaches are used here:
* Renaming an inner (or outer, but more commonly inner) variable;
* Lowering a declaration to avoid a clash;
* Moving a declaration into a more inner scope to avoid a clash,
including the special case of moving a declaration into a loop header.
I did not consider any of the changes in this patch to be particularly
noteworthy, though of course they should all still be examined.

RISC-V supports instructions of varying lengths. Standard existing
instructions in the base ISA are 4 bytes in length, but the 'C'
extension adds support for compressed, 2 byte instructions. RISC-V
supports two different breakpoint instructions: EBREAK is a 4 byte
instruction in the base ISA, and C.EBREAK is a 2 byte instruction only
available on processors implementing the 'C' extension. Using EBREAK
to set breakpoints on compressed instructions causes problems as the
second half of EBREAK will overwrite the first 2 bytes of the
following instruction breaking other threads in the process if their
PC is the following instruction. Thus, breakpoints on compressed
instructions need to use C.EBREAK instead of EBREAK.
Previously, the riscv architecture checked the MISA register to
determine if the 'C' extension was available. If so, it used C.EBREAK
for all breakpoints. However, the MISA register is not necessarily
available to supervisor mode operating systems. While native targets
could provide a fake MISA register value, this patch instead examines
the existing instruction at a breakpoint target to determine which
breakpoint instruction to use. If the existing instruction is a
compressed instruction, C.EBREAK is used, otherwise EBREAK is used.

With the growing number of selftests, I think it would be useful to be
able to run only a subset of the tests. This patch associates a name to
each registered selftest. It then allows doing something like:
(gdb) maintenance selftest aarch64
Running self-tests.
Running selftest aarch64-analyze-prologue.
Running selftest aarch64-process-record.
Ran 2 unit tests, 0 failed
or with gdbserver:
./gdbserver --selftest=aarch64
In both cases, only the tests that contain "aarch64" in their name are
ran. To help validate that the tests you want to run were actually ran,
it also prints a message with the test name before running each test.
Right now, all the arch-dependent tests are registered as a single test
of the selftests. To be able to filter those too, I made them
"first-class citizen" selftests. The selftest type is an interface,
with different implementations for "simple selftests" and "arch
selftests". The run_tests function simply iterates on that an invokes
operator() on each test.
I changed the tests data structure from a vector to a map, because
- it allows iterating in a stable (alphabetical) order
- it allows to easily verify if a test with a given name has been
registered, to avoid duplicates
There's also a new command "maintenance info selftests" that lists the
registered selftests.

This patch starts from the desire to eliminate
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete, but then goes beyond. It makes ui_file &
friends a real C++ class hierarchy, and switches temporary
ui_file-like objects to stack-based allocation.
- mem_fileopen -> string_file
mem_fileopen is replaced with a new string_file class that is treated
as a value class created on the stack. This alone eliminates most
make_cleanup_ui_file_delete calls, and, simplifies code a whole lot
(diffstat shows around 1k loc dropped.)
string_file's internal buffer is a std::string, thus the "string" in
the name. This simplifies the implementation much, compared to
mem_fileopen, which managed growing its internal buffer manually.
- ui_file_as_string, ui_file_strdup, ui_file_obsavestring all gone
The new string_file class has a string() method that provides direct
writable access to the internal std::string buffer. This replaced
ui_file_as_string, which forced a copy of the same data the stream had
inside. With direct access via a writable reference, we can instead
move the string out of the string_stream, avoiding deep string
copying.
Related, ui_file_xstrdup calls are replaced with xstrdup'ping the
stream's string, and ui_file_obsavestring is replaced by
obstack_copy0.
With all those out of the way, getting rid of the weird ui_file_put
mechanism was possible.
- New ui_file::printf, ui_file::puts, etc. methods
These simplify / clarify client code. I considered splitting
client-code changes, like these, e.g.:

In two steps, with the first step leaving fprintf_unfiltered (etc.)
calls in place, and only afterwards do a pass to change all those to
call stb.printf etc.. I didn't do that split, because (when I tried),
it turned out to be pointless make-work: the first pass would have to
touch the fprintf_unfiltered line anyway, to replace "stb" with
"&stb".
- gdb_fopen replaced with stack-based objects
This avoids the need for cleanups or unique_ptr's. I.e., this:

The TUI's ui_file was serving a dual purpose. It supported being used
as string buffer, and supported being backed by a stdio FILE. The
string buffer part is gone, replaced by using of string_file. The
'FILE *' support is now much simplified, by making the TUI's ui_file
inherit from stdio_file.

This patch adds a unit test about memory error occurs on reading
memory, and check MEMORY_ERROR exception is always thrown.

This patch adds one unit test, which disassemble one instruction for
every gdbarch if available. The test needs one valid instruction of
each gdbarch, and most of them are got from breakpoint instruction.
For the rest gdbarch whose breakpoint instruction isn't a valid
instruction, I copy one instruction from the gas/testsuite/gas/
directory.
I get the valid instruction of most gdbarch except ia64, mep, mips,
tic6x, and xtensa. People familiar with these arch should be easy
to extend the test.
In order to achieve "do the unit test for every gdbarch", I add
selftest-arch.[c,h], so that we can register a function pointer,
which has one argument gdbarch. selftest.c will iterate over all
gdbarches to call the registered function pointer.
