2015-08-25remote: allow aborting long operations (e.g., file transfers)Pedro Alves1-11/+9
Currently, when remote debugging, if you type Ctrl-C just while the target stopped for an internal event, and GDB is busy doing something that takes a while (e.g., fetching chunks of a shared library off of the target, with vFile, to process ELF headers and debug info), the Ctrl-C is lost. The patch hooks up the QUIT macro to a new target method that lets the target react to the double-Ctrl-C before the event loop is reached, which allows reacting to a double-Ctrl-C even when GDB is busy doing some long operation and not waiting for a stop reply. That end result is: (gdb) c Continuing. ^C ^C Interrupted while waiting for the program. Give up waiting? (y or n) y Quit (gdb) info threads Id Target Id Frame * 1 Thread 11673 0x00007ffff7deb240 in _dl_debug_state () from target:/lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (gdb) If, however, GDB is waiting for a stop reply (because the target has been resumed, with e.g., vCont;c), but the target isn't responding, we now get: (gdb) c Continuing. ^C ^C The target is not responding to interrupt requests. Stop debugging it? (y or n) y Disconnected from target. (gdb) info threads No threads. This offers to disconnect, because when we're waiting for a stop reply, there's nothing else we can send the target other than an interrupt request. And if that doesn't work, there's nothing else we can do. The Ctrl-C is presently lost because until we get to a user-visible stop, the SIGINT handler that is installed is the one that forwards the interrupt to the remote side, with the \003 "packet" [1]. But, gdbserver ignores an interrupt request if the program is stopped. Still, even if it didn't, the server can only report back a stop-because-of-SIGINT when the program is next resumed. And it may take a while to actually re-resume the target. [1] - In the old sync days, the remote target would react to a double-Ctrl-C by asking users whether they wanted to give up waiting and disconnect. The code is still there, but it it isn't reacheable on most hosts, which support serial connections in async mode (probably only DJGPP doesn't). Even then, in sync mode, remote.c's SIGINT handler is only installed while the target is resumed, and is removed as soon as the target sends back a stop reply. That means that a Ctrl-C just while GDB is processing an internal event can end up with an odd "Quit" at the prompt instead of "Program stopped by SIGINT". In contrast, in async mode, remote.c's SIGINT handler is set up as long as target_terminal_inferior or target_terminal_ours_for_output are in effect (IOW, until we get a user-visible stop and call target_terminal_ours), so the user shouldn't get back a spurious Quit. However, it's still desirable to be able to interrupt a long-running GDB operation, if GDB takes a while to re-resume the target or get back to the event loop. Tested on x86_64 Fedora 20. gdb/ChangeLog: 2015-08-24 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * defs.h (maybe_quit): Declare. 2015-07-08tui: replace deprecated_register_changed_hook with observerPatrick Palka1-1/+0

2015-05-16compile: New 'compile print'Jan Kratochvil1-0/+9
It is planned the existing GDB command 'print' will be able to evaluate its expressions using the compiler. There will be some option to choose between the existing GDB evaluation and the compiler evaluation. But as an intermediate step this patch provides the expression printing feature as a new command. I can imagine it could be also called 'maintenance compile print' as in the future one should be able to use its functionality by the normal 'print' command. There was a discussion with Eli about the command name: https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2015-03/msg00880.html As there were no other comments yet I haven't renamed it yet, before there is some confirmation about settlement on the final name. 2015-04-11Remove --xdbJan Kratochvil1-3/+0
Pedro Alves: The commands that enables aren't even documented in the manual. Judging from that, I assume that only wdb users would ever really be using the --xdb switch. I think it's time to drop "support" for the --xdb switch too. I looked through the commands that that exposes, the only that looked potentially interesting was "go", but then it's just an alias for "tbreak+jump", which can easily be done with "define go...end". I'd rather free up the "go" name for something potentially more interesting (either run control, or maybe even unrelated, e.g., for golang). gdb/ChangeLog 2015-04-11 Jan Kratochvil <jan.kratochvil@redhat.com> * NEWS (Changes since GDB 7.9): Add removed -xdb. * breakpoint.c (command_line_is_silent): Remove xdb_commands conditional. 2015-01-15Move code to disable ASR to nat/Sergio Durigan Junior1-1/+0
This patch moves the shared code present on gdb/linux-nat.c:linux_nat_create_inferior and gdb/gdbserver/linux-low.c:linux_create_inferior to nat/linux-personality.c. This code is responsible for disabling address space randomization based on user setting, and using <sys/personality.h> to do that. I decided to put the prototype of the maybe_disable_address_space_randomization on nat/linux-osdata.h because it seemed the best place to put it. 2014-12-15Fix build with Python 3.4 (PR python/16784)Simon Marchi1-4/+4
The type of the function pointer PyOS_ReadlineFunctionPointer (part of the Python C API), which we use, slightly changed starting with Python 3.4. The signature went from PyAPI_DATA(char) *(*PyOS_ReadlineFunctionPointer)(FILE *, FILE *, char *); to PyAPI_DATA(char) *(*PyOS_ReadlineFunctionPointer)(FILE *, FILE *, const char *); The parameter that changed is the prompt text. This commits adjust gdb accordingly by making the prompt_arg parameter const, as well as the fallouts of that. I needed to rework how annotations are added to the prompt, since the it is now const. If annotations are enabled, it will make a copy of the prompt overwrite the prompt variable that is used throughout the function. Otherwise, no copy is done and the original prompt_arg value is passed. I changed the signature of deprecated_readline_hook. I would've changed any user of it, but it seems like nothing is using it, Built-tested with python 2.7.x, 3.3.y and 3.4.z. gdb/ChangeLog: * defs.h (gdb_readline): Constify argument. 2014-12-12the "compile" commandTom Tromey1-0/+28
This final patch adds the new "compile" command and subcommands, and all the machinery needed to make it work. A shared library supplied by gcc is used for all communications with gcc. Types and most aspects of symbols are provided directly by gdb to the compiler using this library. gdb provides some information about the user's code using plain text. Macros are emitted this way, and DWARF location expressions (and bounds for VLA) are compiled to C code. This hybrid approach was taken because, on the one hand, it is better to provide global declarations and such on demand; but on the other hand, for local variables, translating DWARF location expressions to C was much simpler than exporting a full compiler API to gdb -- the same result, only easier to implement, understand, and debug. In the ordinary mode, the user's expression is wrapped in a dummy function. After compilation, gdb inserts the resulting object code into the inferior, then calls this function. Access to local variables is provided by noting which registers are used by location expressions, and passing a structure of register values into the function. Writes to registers are supported by copying out these values after the function returns. This approach was taken so that we could eventually implement other more interesting features based on this same infrastructure; for example, we're planning to investigate inferior-side breakpoint conditions. gdb/ChangeLog 2014-12-12 Phil Muldoon <pmuldoon@redhat.com> Jan Kratochvil <jan.kratochvil@redhat.com> Tom Tromey <tromey@redhat.com> * NEWS: Update. * symtab.h (struct symbol_computed_ops) <generate_c_location>: New field. * p-lang.c (pascal_language_defn): Update. * opencl-lang.c (opencl_language_defn): Update. * objc-lang.c (objc_language_defn): Update. * m2-lang.c (m2_language_defn): Update. * language.h (struct language_defn) <la_get_compile_instance, la_compute_program>: New fields. * language.c (unknown_language_defn, auto_language_defn) (local_language_defn): Update. * jv-lang.c (java_language_defn): Update. * go-lang.c (go_language_defn): Update. * f-lang.c (f_language_defn): Update. * dwarf2loc.h (dwarf2_compile_property_to_c): Declare. * dwarf2loc.c (dwarf2_compile_property_to_c) (locexpr_generate_c_location, loclist_generate_c_location): New functions. 2014-10-17Delete Tru64 supportPedro Alves1-1/+0
This commit does most of the mechanical removal. IOW, the easy part. procfs.c isn't touched beyond removing a couple obvious bits that are guarded by a couple macros defined in config/alpha/nm-osf3.h. Going beyond that for procfs.c & co would be a harder excision that potentially affects Solaris. Some comments in the generic alpha code ABIs that may still be relevant and I wouldn't know what to do with them. That can always be done on a separate pass, preferably by someone who can test on alpha. A couple other spots have references to OSF/Tru64 and related files being removed, but it felt like removing them would make things worse, not better. We can revisit those when we next need to touch that code. I didn't remove a reference to osf in testsuite/lib/future.exp, as I believe that code is imported from DejaGNU. Built and tested on x86_64 Fedora 20, with --enable-targets=all. Tested that building for --target=alpha-osf3 on x86_64 Fedora 20 fails with: checking for default auto-load directory... $debugdir:$datadir/auto-load checking for default auto-load safe-path... $debugdir:$datadir/auto-load *** Configuration alpha-unknown-osf3 is obsolete. *** Support has been REMOVED. make[1]: *** [configure-gdb] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `build-osf' make: *** [all] Error 2 gdb/ 2014-10-17 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * Makefile.in (ALL_64_TARGET_OBS): Remove alpha-osf1-tdep.o. 2014-08-19Introduce common-types.hGary Benson1-29/+0
This introduces common-types.h. This file defines various standard types used by gdb and gdbserver. Currently these types are conditionally defined based on GDBSERVER. The long term goal is to remove all such tests; however, this is difficult as currently gdb uses definitions from BFD. In the meantime this is still a step in the right direction. gdb/ChangeLog: * common/common-types.h: New file. * Makefile.in (HFILES_NO_SRCDIR): Add common/common-types.h. * common/common-defs.h: Include common-types.h. * defs.h (gdb_byte, CORE_ADDR, CORE_ADDR_MAX, LONGEST) (ULONGEST): Remove. gdb/gdbserver/ChangeLog: * server.h: Add static assertion. 2014-08-07Move errno.h to common-defs.hGary Benson1-1/+0
This commit moves the inclusion of errno.h to common-defs.h and removes all other inclusions. Note that prior to this commit server.h included errno.h protected by "#ifdef HAVE_ERRNO_H". 2014-07-30Introduce common/common-defs.hGary Benson1-2/+1
This commit creates a new header, common/common-defs.h, to hold definitions common to all code under gdb/. Both gdb/defs.h and gdb/gdbserver/server.h are modified to include common-defs.h as their first non-comment line; all code under gdb/ includes either defs.h or server.h as appropriate, so common-defs.h will be the first actual code the compiler sees. For this initial commit common-defs.h includes only the two config.h files. Future commits will move more code currently duplicated across defs.h and server.h such that shared code in gdb/{common,target,nat} can be modified to include common-defs.h rather than defs.h or server.h. gdb/ 2014-07-30 Gary Benson <gbenson@redhat.com> * common/common-defs.h: New file. * Makefile.in (HFILES_NO_SRCDIR): Add common/common-defs.h. * defs.h: Include common-defs.h. 2013-11-18don't check for stddef.hTom Tromey1-6/+0
gdb already unconditionally includes stddef.h in many places. I think there is no reason to check for its existence. Also, Zack Weinberg's header file survey agrees: http://hacks.owlfolio.org/header-survey/ This patch removes the configure check and the inclusion guards. It also removes a redundant inclusion that I noticed in defs.h. 2013-11-18 Tom Tromey <tromey@redhat.com> * config.in: Rebuild. * configure: Rebuild. * configure.ac: Don't check for stddef.h. * defs.h: Unconditionally include stddef.h.
