Since 3c45e9f915ae4aeab7312d6fc55a947859057572 gdb crashes when trying
to print a global variable stub without a running inferior, because of
a missing nullptr-check (the block_scope function took care of that
check before it was converted to a method).
With this check it works again:
```
(gdb) print s
$1 = <incomplete type>
```

This function is just a wrapper around the current inferior's gdbarch.
I find that having that wrapper just obscures where the arch is coming
from, and that it's often used as "I don't know which arch to use so
I'll use this magical target_gdbarch function that gets me an arch" when
the arch should in fact come from something in the context (a thread,
objfile, symbol, etc). I think that removing it and inlining
`current_inferior ()->arch ()` everywhere will make it a bit clearer
where that arch comes from and will trigger people into reflecting
whether this is the right place to get the arch or not.

When debugging C++ programs, it is possible to trigger a spurious assert
failure when attempting to set a breakpoint on a malformed symbol name.
Names of the form 'A>::B' and 'A)::B' trigger this assert failure in
cp_lookup_bare_symbol:
$ gdb gdb
[...]
(gdb) br test>::assert
Function "test>::assert" not defined.
Make breakpoint pending on future shared library load? (y or [n]) y
Breakpoint 1 (test>::assert) pending.
(gdb) start

A problem internal to GDB has been detected,
further debugging may prove unreliable.

This converts block_static_block and block_global_block to be methods.
This was mostly written by script. It was simpler to convert them at
the same time because they're often used near each other.
|
|
This converts block_scope, block_set_scope, block_using, and
block_set_using to be methods. These are all done at once to make it
easier to also convert block_initialize_namespace at the same time.

When running gdb.cp/nsusing.cc and stopping at line 17, we can ask GDB
to print x and get a compiler-dependent answer. Using gcc 12.2.1, GDB
will print M::x, and using clang 16.0.0 prints N::x. Not only is this
behavior confusing to users, it is also not consistent with compiler
behaviors, which would warn that using x is ambiguous at this point.
This commit makes GDB behavior consistent with compilers. it achieves
this by making it so instead of exiting early when finding any symbol
with the correct name, GDB continues searching through all include
directives, storing all matching symbols in a relational map betwen the
mangled name and the found symbols.
If the resulting map has more than one entry, GDB says that the
reference is ambiguous and lists all possibilities. Otherwise it returns
the block_symbol structure for the desired symbol, or an empty struct if
nothing was found.
The commit also changes gdb.cp/nsusing.exp to test the ambiguous
detection.

This commit is the result of running the gdb/copyright.py script,
which automated the update of the copyright year range for all
source files managed by the GDB project to be updated to include
year 2023.

When asking GDB to print a variable from an imported namespace, we only
want to see variables imported in lines that the inferior has already
gone through, as is being tested last in gdb.cp/nsusing.exp. However
with the proposed change to gdb.cp/nsusing.exp, we get the following
failures:
(gdb) PASS: gdb.cp/nsusing.exp: continue to breakpoint: marker10 stop
print x
$9 = 911
(gdb) FAIL: gdb.cp/nsusing.exp: print x, before using statement
next
15 y += x;
(gdb) PASS: gdb.cp/nsusing.exp: using namespace M
print x
$10 = 911
(gdb) PASS: gdb.cp/nsusing.exp: print x, only using M
Showing that the feature wasn't functioning properly, it just so
happened that gcc ordered the namespaces in a convenient way.
This happens because GDB doesn't take into account the line where the
"using namespace" directive is written. So long as it shows up in the
current scope, we assume it is valid.
To fix this, add a new member to struct using_direct, that stores the
line where the directive was written, and a new function that informs if
the using directive is valid already.
Unfortunately, due to a GCC bug, the failure still shows up. Compilers
that set the declaration line of the using directive correctly (such as
Clang) do not show such a bug, so the test includes an XFAIL for gcc
code.
Finally, because the final test of gdb.cp/nsusing.exp has turned into
multiple that all would need XFAILs for older GCCs (<= 4.3), and that
GCC is very old, if it is detected, the test just exits early.

Convert the implementation of 'set debug symbol-lookup' to the new
debug printing scheme.
In a few places I've updated the debug output to remove places where
the printed debug message included the function name, the new debug
scheme already adds that, but I haven't done all the possible updates.

Currently, every internal_error call must be passed __FILE__/__LINE__
explicitly, like:
internal_error (__FILE__, __LINE__, "foo %d", var);
The need to pass in explicit __FILE__/__LINE__ is there probably
because the function predates widespread and portable variadic macros
availability. We can use variadic macros nowadays, and in fact, we
already use them in several places, including the related
gdb_assert_not_reached.
So this patch renames the internal_error function to something else,
and then reimplements internal_error as a variadic macro that expands
__FILE__/__LINE__ itself.
The result is that we now should call internal_error like so:
internal_error ("foo %d", var);
Likewise for internal_warning.
The patch adjusts all calls sites. 99% of the adjustments were done
with a perl/sed script.
The non-mechanical changes are in gdbsupport/errors.h,
gdbsupport/gdb_assert.h, and gdb/gdbarch.py.

When a class inherits from a typedef'd baseclass, GDB may be unable to
find the baseclass if the user is not using the typedef'd name, as is
tested on gdb.cp/virtbase2.exp; the reason that test case is working
under gcc is that the dwarf generated by gcc links the class to the
original definition of the baseclass, not to the typedef. If the
inheritance is linked to the typedef, such as how clang does it,
gdb.cp/virtbase2.exp starts failing.
This can also be seen in gdb.cp/impl-this.exp, when attempting to print
D::Bint::i, and GDB not being able to find the baseclass Bint.
This happens because searching for baseclasses only uses the macro
TYPE_BASECLASS_NAME, which returns the typedef'd name. However, we can't
switch that macro to checking for typedefs, otherwise we wouldn't be
able to find the typedef'd name anymore. This is fixed by searching for
members or baseclasses by name, we check both the saved name and the
name after checking for typedefs.
This also fixes said long-standing bug in gdb.cp/impl-this.exp when the
compiler adds information about typedefs in the debuginfo.

This moves the gdb-specific obstack code -- both extensions like
obconcat and obstack_strdup, and things like auto_obstack -- to
gdbsupport.
|
|
Many otherwise ordinary commands choose to use unfiltered output
rather than filtered. I don't think there's any reason for this, so
this changes many such commands to use filtered output instead.
Note that complete_command is not touched due to a comment there
explaining why unfiltered output is believed to be used.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

Remove `TYPE_NAME`, changing all the call sites to use `type::name`
directly. This is quite a big diff, but this was mostly done using sed
and coccinelle. A few call sites were done by hand.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* gdbtypes.h (TYPE_NAME): Remove. Change all cal sites to use
type::name instead.

Remove TYPE_CODE, changing all the call sites to use type::code
directly. This is quite a big diff, but this was mostly done using sed
and coccinelle. A few call sites were done by hand.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* gdbtypes.h (TYPE_CODE): Remove. Change all call sites to use
type::code instead.

I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:
CXX dcache.o
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
_initialize_dcache (void)
^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:
commit 481695ed5f6e0a8a9c9c50bfac1cdd2b3151e6c9
Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org>
Date: Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700
Remove unnecessary function prototypes.
I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these
functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.

gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
|
|
Also renames the member variable to m_language to make code easier to read
when more functions become member functions.
I was originally hoping to eventually make m_language private (after a few
more patches), but unfortunately then it no longer counts as a POD type,
which means gdbsupport/poison.h won't let us use memset to initialize
this type, which psymtabs rely on to clear padding bytes so that bcache
can work properly.

This patch is a rebase and update of the following three patches:
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2018-11/msg00298.html
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2018-11/msg00302.html
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2018-11/msg00301.html
I have merged these together into a single commit as the second patch,
adding scope support to nested subroutines, means that some of the
changes in the first patch are now no longer useful and would have to
be backed out. The third patch is tightly coupled to the changes in
the second of these patches and I think deserves to live together with
it.
There is an extra change in cp-namespace.c that is new, this resolves
an issue with symbol lookup when placing breakpoints from within
nested subroutines.
There is also an extra test added to this commit 'nested-funcs-2.exp'
that was written by Richard Bunt from ARM, this offers some additional
testing of breakpoints on nested functions.
After this commit it is possible to place breakpoints on nested
Fortran subroutines and functions by using a fully scoped name, for
example, given this simple Fortran program:
program greeting
call message
contains
subroutine message
print *, "Hello World"
end subroutine message
end program greeting
It is possible to place a breakpoint in 'message' with:
(gdb) break greeting::message
Breakpoint 1 at 0x4006c9: file basic.f90, line 5.
What doesn't work with this commit is placing a breakpoint like this:
(gdb) break message
Function "message" not defined.
Making this work will come in a later commit.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* cp-namespace.c (cp_search_static_and_baseclasses): Only search
for nested static variables when searchin VAR_DOMAIN.
* dwarf2read.c (add_partial_symbol): Add nested subroutines to the
global scope, update comment.

Andreas Schwab and John Baldwin pointed out some bugs in the header
sorting patch; and I noticed that the output was not correct when
limited to a subset of files (a bug in my script).
So, I'm reverting the patch. I may try again after fixing the issues
pointed out.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

This changes cp_scan_for_anonymous_namespaces to use the

This introduces a new header, buildsym-legacy.h, and changes all the
symbol readers to use it. The idea is to put the function-based
interface, that relies on the buildsym_compunit global, into a
separate header. Then when a symbol reader is updated to use the new
interface, it can simply not include buildsym-legacy.h, so it's easy
to be sure that the new API is used everywhere.

wrote:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Consider the following code which first declares a tagged type (the
equivalent of a class in Ada), and then a procedure which takes a
pointer (access) to this type's 'Class.
package Pck is
type Top_T is tagged record
N : Integer := 1;
end record;
procedure Inspect (Obj: access Top_T'Class);
end Pck;
Putting a breakpoint in that procedure and then running to it triggers
an internal error:
(gdb) break inspect
(gdb) continue
Breakpoint 1, pck.inspect (obj=0x63e010
/[...]/gdb/stack.c:621: internal-error: void print_frame_args(symbol*, frame_info*, int, ui_file*): Assertion `nsym != NULL' failed.
What's special about this subprogram is that it takes an access to
what we call a 'Class type, and for implementation reasons, the
compiler adds an extra argument named "objL". If you are curious why,
it allows the compiler for perform dynamic accessibility checks that
are mandated by the language.
If we look at the location where we get the internal error (in
stack.c), we find that we are looping over the symbol of each
parameter, and for each parameter, we do:
/* We have to look up the symbol because arguments can have
two entries (one a parameter, one a local) and the one we
want is the local, which lookup_symbol will find for us.
[...]
nsym = lookup_symbol (SYMBOL_LINKAGE_NAME (sym),
b, VAR_DOMAIN, NULL).symbol;
gdb_assert (nsym != NULL);
The lookup_symbol goes through the lookup structure, which means the
symbol's linkage name ("objL") gets transformed into a
lookup_name_info object (in block_lookup_symbol), before it gets fed
to the block symbol dictionary iterators. This, in turn, triggers the
symbol matching by comparing the "lookup" name which, for Ada, means
among other things, lowercasing the given name to "objl". It is this
transformation that causes the lookup find no matches, and therefore
trip this assertion.
Going back to the "offending" call to lookup_symbol in stack.c, what
we are trying to do, here, is do a lookup by linkage name. So, I
think what we mean to be doing is a completely literal symbol lookup,
so maybe not even strcmp_iw, but actually just plain strcmp???
In the past, in practice, you could get that effect by doing a lookup
using the C language. But that doesn't work, because we still end up
somehow using Ada's lookup_name routine which transforms "objL".
So, ideally, as I hinted before, I think what we need is a way to
perform a literal lookup so that searches by linkage names like the
above can be performed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This commit fixes the problem by implementing something similar to
Joel's literal idea, but with some important differences.
I considered adding a symbol_name_match_type::LINKAGE and supporting
searching by linkage name for any language, but the problem with that
is that the dictionaries only work with SYMBOL_SEARCH_NAME, because
that's what is used for hashing. We'd need separate dictionaries for
hashed linkage names.
So with the current symbol tables infrastructure, it's not literal
linkage names that we want to pass down, but instead literal _search_
names (SYMBOL_SEARCH_NAME, etc.).
However, psymbols have no overload/function parameter info in C++, so
a straight strcmp doesn't work properly for C++ name matching.
So what we do is be a little less aggressive then and add a new
symbol_name_match_type::SEARCH_SYMBOL instead that takes as input a
non-user-input search symbol, and then we skip any decoding/demangling
steps and make:
- Ada treat that as a verbatim match,
- other languages treat it as symbol_name_match_type::FULL.
This also fixes the new '"maint check-psymtabs" for Ada' testcase for
me (gdb.ada/maint_with_ada.exp). I've not removed the kfail yet
because Joel still sees that testcase failing with this patch.
That'll be fixed in follow up patches.

While the previous commit made "p method()::static_var" (no
single-quotes) Just Work, if users (or frontends) try wrapping the
expression with quotes, they'll get:
(gdb) p 'S::method()::static_var'
'S::method()::static_var' has unknown type; cast it to its declared type
even if we _do_ have debug info for that variable. That's better than
the bogus/confusing value what GDB would print before the
stop-assuming-int patch:
(gdb) p 'S::method()::static_var'
$1 = 1
but I think it'd still be nice to make this case Just Work too.
In this case, due to the quoting, the C/C++ parser (c-exp.y)
interprets the whole expression/string as a single symbol name, and we
end up calling lookup_symbol on that name. There's no debug symbol
with that fully-qualified name, but since the compiler gives the
static variable a mangled linkage name exactly like the above, it
appears in the mininal symbols:
$ nm -A local-static | c++filt | grep static_var
local-static:0000000000601040 d S::method()::static_var
... and that's what GDB happens to find/print. This only happens in
C++, note, since for C the compiler uses different linkage names:
local-static-c:0000000000601040 d static_var.1848
So while (in C++, not C) function local static variables are given a
mangled name that demangles to the same syntax that GDB
documents/expects as the way to access function local statics, there's
no global symbol in the debug info with that name at all. The debug
info for a static local variable for a non-inline function looks like
this:
<1><2a1>: Abbrev Number: 19 (DW_TAG_subprogram)
...
<2><2f7>: Abbrev Number: 20 (DW_TAG_variable)
<2f8> DW_AT_name : (indirect string, offset: 0x4e9): static_var
<2fc> DW_AT_decl_file : 1
<2fd> DW_AT_decl_line : 64
<2fe> DW_AT_type : <0x25>
<302> DW_AT_location : 9 byte block: 3 40 10 60 0 0 0 0 0 (DW_OP_addr: 601040)
and for an inline function, it looks like this (linkage name run
through c++filt for convenience):
<2><21b>: Abbrev Number: 16 (DW_TAG_variable)
<21c> DW_AT_name : (indirect string, offset: 0x21a): static_var
<220> DW_AT_decl_file : 1
<221> DW_AT_decl_line : 48
<222> DW_AT_linkage_name: (indirect string, offset: 0x200): S::inline_method()::static_var
<226> DW_AT_type : <0x25>
<22a> DW_AT_external : 1
<22a> DW_AT_location : 9 byte block: 3 a0 10 60 0 0 0 0 0 (DW_OP_addr: 6010a0)
(The inline case makes the variable external so that the linker can
merge the different inlined copies. It seems like GCC never outputs
the linkage name for non-extern globals.)
When we read the DWARF, we record the static_var variable as a regular
variable of the containing function's block. This makes stopping in
the function and printing the variable as usual. The variable just so
happens to have a memory address as location.
So one way to make "p 'S::method()::static_var'" work would be to
record _two_ copies of the symbols for these variables. One in the
function's scope/block, with "static_var" as name, as we currently do,
and another in the static or global blocks (depending on whether the
symbol is external), with a fully-qualified name. I wrote a prototype
patch for that, and it works. For the non-inline case above, since
the debug info doesn't point to the linkage same, that patch built the
physname of the static local variable as the concat of the physname of
the containing function, plus "::", plus the variable's name. We
could make that approach work for C too, though it kind of feels
awkward to record fake symbol names like that in C.
The other approach I tried is to change the C++ symbol lookup routines
instead. This is the approach this commit takes. We can already
lookup up symbol in namespaces and classes, so this feels like a good
fit, and was easy enough. The advantage is that this doesn't require
recording extra symbols.
The test in gdb.cp/m-static.exp that exposed the need for this is
removed, since the same functionality is now covered by
gdb.cp/local-static.exp.
