Using the default lookup for the symbol "this" might lead to segmentation
fault in GDB.
Some languages, e.g. Fortran, use as default lookup routine the C++
routines.
For those languages "this" can be the instance of a class or even the
definition of a class.
When an instance of a class having the name "this" is evaluated
in GDB a segmentation fault was observed.
As example of the issue take into consideration the Fortran code:
type foo
real :: a
type(bar) :: x
character*7 :: b
end type foo
type(foo) :: this
Issue appears when evaluating the variable "this" in GDB.
Within the language definition structure there is a field that represents
the name of the special symbol used for the C++ "this" for the language
being described.
The fix presented here takes into account the aforementioned field. In the
case the aforementioned field is NULL "this" is not represented in the
language described and the lookup should return a null_block_symbol.
Tests: Performed tests with gfortran and ifort.

lookup_symbol is often called with user input. Consequently, any
function called from lookup_symbol{,_in_language} should attempt to
deal with malformed input gracefully. After all, malformed user
input is not a programming/API error.
This patch does not attempt to find/correct all instances of this. It
only fixes locations in the code that trigger test suite failures.
This patch fixes PR breakpoints/18303, "Assertion: -breakpoint-insert
with windows paths of file in non-current directory".
The patch includes three new tests related to this. One is just
gdb.linespec/ls-errs.exp copied and converted to use C++ instead of C, and
to add a case using a file name containing a Windows-style logical drive
specifier. The others include an MI test to provide a regression test for
the specific case reported in PR 18303, and a C++ test for proper error
handling of access to a program variable when using a file scope specifier
that refers to a non-existent file.
Tested on x86_64 native Linux.

Note: I needed to split this patch in two, otherwise it's too big for
the mailing list.
This patch adds explicit casts to situations where a void pointer is
assigned to a pointer to the "real" type. Building in C++ mode requires
those assignments to use an explicit cast. This includes, for example:
- callback arguments (cleanups, comparison functions, ...)
- data attached to some object (objfile, program space, etc) in the form
of a void pointer
- "user data" passed to some function
This patch comes from the commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert
casts needed for C++", taken from Pedro's C++ branch.
Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified, so the
native files for other arches will need to be dealt with separately.
I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested. To my
surprise, a test case (selftest.exp) had to be adjusted.
Here's the ChangeLog entry. Again, this was relatively quick to make
despite the length, thanks to David Malcom's script, although I don't
believe it's very useful information in that particular case...

Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the
allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when
assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case
more often than not).
The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit
"(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I
validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to
make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I
could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc.
Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing
it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time.
Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This
means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be
dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to
build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't
know.
I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.

Consider the following declaration:
function Foo (I : Integer) return Integer renames Pack.Bar;
As Foo is not materialized as a routine whose name is derived from Foo,
GDB currently cannot use it:
(gdb) print foo(0)
No definition of "foo" in current context.
However, compilers can emit DW_TAG_imported_declaration in order to
materialize the fact that Foo is actually another name for Pack.Bar.
This commit enhances the DWARF reader to record global renamings (it
used to put global ones in a static block) and enhances the Ada engine
to leverage this information during symbol lookup.

As of commit a5fdf78a4402341a0ae23a5ca8a63825e2b5286c, building GDB with
a GCC 4.1 host compiler fails with:
gdb/cp-namespace.c: In function 'cp_lookup_symbol_via_imports':
gdb/cp-namespace.c:482: warning: 'sym.block' may be used uninitialized in this function
Apparently, more recent compilers are able to deduce that no actual
uninitialized use of sym.block takes place, but GCC 4.1 isn't yet
able to do that.
Fixed by adding an explicit initalization.

As Pedro suggested on gdb-patches@ (see

both the symbol found and the block in which it was found. This makes
it possible to get rid of the block_found global variable and thus makes

I think that the CHECK_TYPEDEF macro is not necessary, and even a bit
annoying. It makes unclear the fact that the "type" variables gets
overwritten. It has actually bitten me a few times. I think the
following, explicit form, is better.
type = check_typedef (type);
This patches changes all instances of CHECK_TYPEDEF for an equivalent
call to check_typedef. The bulk of the change was done with this sed:
sed -i 's/CHECK_TYPEDEF (\([^)]*\));/\1 = check_typedef (\1);/' <file>.c
The ChangeLog was generated using David Malcom's generate_changelog.py.
I manually fixed those places where it gets the wrong function name,
hopefully all of them.
The patch was built-tested, and I ran a few smoke tests.

This commit introduces a new inline common function "startswith"
which takes two string arguments and returns nonzero if the first
string starts with the second. It also updates the 295 places
where this logic was written out longhand to use the new function.

This patch renames symbols that happen to have names which are
reserved keywords in C++.
Most of this was generated with Tromey's cxx-conversion.el script.
Some places where later hand massaged a bit, to fix formatting, etc.
And this was rebased several times meanwhile, along with re-running
the script, so re-running the script from scratch probably does not
result in the exact same output. I don't think that matters anyway.

This patch addresses two issues.
The basic problem is that "(anonymous namespace)" doesn't get entered
into the symbol table because when dwarf2read.c:new_symbol_full is called
the DIE has no name (dwarf2_name returns NULL).

PR 17821: perf issue looking up (anonymous namespace)

symbol_matches_domain was permitting searches for a VAR_DOMAIN
symbol to also match STRUCT_DOMAIN symbols for languages like C++
where STRUCT_DOMAIN symbols also define a typedef of the same name,
e.g., "struct foo {}" introduces a typedef of the name "foo".
Problems occur if there exists both a VAR_DOMAIN and STRUCT_DOMAIN
symbol of the same name. Then it is essentially a race between which
symbol is found first. The other symbol is obscurred.
[This is a relatively common idiom: enum e { ... } e;]
This patchset moves this "language defines a typedef" logic to
lookup_symbol[_in_language], looking first for a symbol in the given
domain and falling back to searching STRUCT_DOMAIN when/if appropriate.

This adds support for the C++11 "enum class" feature. This is
PR c++/15246.
I chose to use the existing TYPE_DECLARED_CLASS rather than introduce
a new type code. This seemed both simple and clear to me.
I made overloading support for the new enum types strict. This is how
it works in C++; and it didn't seem like an undue burden to keep this,
particularly because enum constants are printed symbolically by gdb.
Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 20.

Added new domain MODULE_DOMAIN for fortran modules to avoid
issues with sharing namespaces (e.g. when a variable currently
in scope has the same name as a module).
(gdb) ptype modname
old> No symbol "modname" in current context.
new> type = module modname
This fixes PR 15209 and also addresses the issue
with sharing namespaces:

This moves the "gdbarch" field from the objfile into the BFD.
This field's value is derived from the BFD and is immutable over the
lifetime of the BFD. This makes it a reasonable candidate for pushing
into the per-BFD object.
This is part of the long-term objfile splitting project. In the long
run I think this patch will make it simpler to moves types from the
objfile to the per-BFD object; but the patch makes sense as a minor
cleanup by itself.
Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 18.
