I propose removing the context parameter from add_setshow_enum_cmd. It
was useful before add_setshow_enum_cmd returned both created commands,
as the caller couldn't easily set the context itself. But now, I think
it's fine to just let the caller do it.

If something tries to set a context pointer on a cmd_list_element and
m_context is not nullptr, it's likely that two parts of the code are
trying to set different contexts, and one will overwrite the other.
This is almost guaranteed to lead to bad behavior or a crash, as one of
the spots will not be using the data it expects. This happened to me
during development, so I think having this assert would be useful to
catch this problem earlier.

The alias creation functions currently accept a name to specify the
target command. They pass this to add_alias_cmd, which needs to lookup
the target command by name.
Given that:
- We don't support creating an alias for a command before that command
exists.
- We always use add_info_alias just after creating that target command,
and therefore have access to the target command's cmd_list_element.
... change add_com_alias to accept the target command as a
cmd_list_element (other functions are done in subsequent patches). This
ensures we don't create the alias before the target command, because you
need to get the cmd_list_element from somewhere when you call the alias
creation function. And it avoids an unecessary command lookup. So it
seems better to me in every aspect.

Some add_set_show commands return a single cmd_list_element, the one for
the "set" command. A subsequent patch will need to access the show
command's cmd_list_element as well. Change these functions to return a
new structure type that holds both pointers.
I initially only modified add_setshow_boolean_cmd (the one I needed),
but I think it's better to change the whole chain to keep everything in
sync.

In cli/cli-script.c, process_next_line() allocates memory
which will eventually end up being assigned to the 'next'
field in struct command_line. However, in a case
recurse_read_control_structure returns 'invalid_control'
this memory is leaked. This commit uses std::unique_ptr
as appropriate to prevent this leakage.
This issue was found by coverity scanning.

While adding a ui_out::text () overload accepting a std::string, I
noticed that several callers of ui_out::field_string () were converting
std::string instances to char pointers even if not necessary.

Same idea as the previous patches, but for whether a command is a
"command class help" command. I think this one is particularly useful,
because it's not obvious when reading code what "c->func == NULL" means.
Remove the cmd_func_p function, which does kind of the same thing as
cmd_list_element::is_command_class_help (except it doesn't give a clue
about the semantic of a NULL func value).

Add the cmd_list_element::is_alias helper to check whether a command is
an alias. I find it easier to understand the intention in:
if (c->is_alias ())
than
if (c->alias_target != nullptr)
Change all the spots that are reading alias_target just to compare it to
NULL/nullptr to use is_alias instead.

cmd_pointer is another field whose name I found really not clear. Yes,
it's a pointer to a command, the type tells me that. But what's the
relationship of that command to the current command? This field
contains, for an alias, the command that it aliases. So I think that
the name "alias_target" would be more appropriate.
Also, rename "old" parameters to "target" in the functions that add
aliases.

While browsing this code, I found the name "prefixlist" really
confusing. I kept reading it as "list of prefixes". Which it isn't:
it's a list of sub-commands, for a prefix command. I think that
renaming it to "subcommands" would make things clearer.

I don't think this can ever happen, that we add an alias command and
pass a nullptr old (target) command. Remove the "if" handling this,
replace with an assert.

I don't think this method really benefits from being implemented in the
header file, especially because it's recursive, it can't be inlined.
Move it to the source file, so it's no re-compiled by every CU
including cli/cli-decode.h.
I also noticed this method could be const, make it so.

Previously, the prefixname field of struct cmd_list_element was manually
set for prefix commands. This seems verbose and error prone as it
required every single call to functions adding prefix commands to
specify the prefix name while the same information can be easily
generated.
Historically, this was not possible as the prefix field was null for
many commands, but this was fixed in commit
3f4d92ebdf7f848b5ccc9e8d8e8514c64fde1183 by Philippe Waroquiers, so
we can rely on the prefix field being set when generating the prefix
name.
This commit also fixes a use after free in this scenario:
* A command gets created via Python (using the gdb.Command class).
The prefix name member is dynamically allocated.
* An alias to the new command is created. The alias's prefixname is set
to point to the prefixname for the original command with a direct
assignment.
* A new command with the same name as the Python command is created.
* The object for the original Python command gets freed and its
prefixname gets freed as well.
* The alias is updated to point to the new command, but its prefixname
is not updated so it keeps pointing to the freed one.

Before this patch:

ERROR: In procedure apply-smob/1:

This is because the path is not tilde expanded. In contrast, when
sourcing a .py or .gdb script the path is tilde expanded.
This commit fixes this oversight, and allows the above source command
to work as expected.
The tilde expansion is done in the generic GDB code before we call the
sourcer function for any particular extension language.

In code dealing with commands, there's a pattern repeated a few times of
calling lookup_cmd with some speficic arguments and then using strcmp
on the returned command to check for an exact match.
As a later patch would add a few more similar lines of code, this patch
adds a new lookup_cmd_exact function which simplify this use case.

Bug 27773 shows that passing a filename in a non-existent directory to
the "dump binary" command leads to a gdb crash. This is because the
gdb_fopen_cloexec in dump_binary_file fails (returns nullptr) and the
return value is not checked. Fix that by erroring out if
gdb_fopen_cloexec fails.

This patch addresses PR gdb/27133. Before it, the following succession
of commands would cause gdb to crash:
set logging redirect on
set logging debugredirect on
set logging on
The problem eventually comes down to a use after free. The function
cli_interp_base::set_logging is called with a unique_ptr argument that
holds a pointer to the redirection file. In the problematic use case,
no-one ever took ownership of that pointer (as far as unique_ptr is
concerned), so the call to its dtor at the end of the function causes
the file object to be deleted. Any later use of the pointer to the
redirection file is therefore an error.
This patch ensures that the unique_ptr is released when required (so it
does not assume ownership anymore). The internal logic of
cli_interp_base::set_logging takes care of freeing the ui_file when it
is not necessary anymore using the saved_output.file_to_delete field.

This commit adds a new 'version' style, which replaces the hard coded
styling currently used for GDB's version string. GDB's version number
is displayed:
1. In the output of 'show version', and
2. When GDB starts up (without the --quiet option).
This new style can only ever affect the first of these two cases as
the second case is printed before GDB has processed any initialization
files, or processed any GDB commands passed on the command line.
However, because the first case exists I think this commit makes
sense, it means the style is no longer hard coded into GDB, and we can
add some tests that the style can be enabled/disabled correctly.
This commit is an alternative to a patch Tom posted here:

I've used the style name 'version' instead of 'startup' to reflect
what the style is actually used for. If other parts of the startup
text end up being highlighted I imagine they would get their own
styles based on what is being highlighted. I feel this is more inline
with the other style names that are already in use within GDB.
I also decoupled adding this style from the idea of startup options,
and the possibility of auto-saving startup options. Those ideas can
be explored in later patches.
This commit should probably be considered only a partial solution to
issue PR cli/25956. The colours of the style are no longer hard
coded, however, it is still impossible to change the styling of the
version string displayed during startup, so in one sense, the styling
of that string is still "hard coded". A later patch will hopefully
extend GDB to allow it to adjust the version styling before the
initial version string is printed.

Commands "set debug remote" and "set remotetimeout" are defined in
cli/cli-cmds.c, I think it would make more sense for them to be in
remote.c.

"document" command executed in python, gdb.execute("document
<comname>\n...\nend\n"), will wait for user input. Python extension stops
working from that point.
multi-line suport was introduced in commit 56bcdbea2. But "document" support
seem to be implemented.

After Andrew's latest patch, I noticed that the deprecation warnings
could use the (so-called) title style when printing command names.

We currently have two flushing commands 'flushregs' and 'maint
flush-symbol-cache'. I'm planning to add at least one more so I
thought it might be nice if we bundled these together into one place.
And so I created the 'maint flush ' command prefix. Currently there
are two commands:
(gdb) maint flush symbol-cache
(gdb) maint flush register-cache
Unfortunately, even though both of the existing flush commands are
maintenance commands, I don't know how keen we about deleting existing
commands for fear of breaking things in the wild. So, both of the
existing flush commands 'maint flush-symbol-cache' and 'flushregs' are
still around as deprecated aliases to the new commands.
I've updated the testsuite to use the new command syntax, and updated
the documentation too.

Notice the warning mentions 'qqq_aaa' and 'xxx_yyy', I consider this
to be wrong. I think the proper warning should read:
(gdb) set qqq_aaa

With the 'set' prefixes added and a comma before the final 'is
deprecated'. That is what this patch does. The expected results are
updated as needed.

Rewrite deprecated_cmd_warning to be i18n friendly. While I'm going
through the function I also cleaned up some whitespace issues,
replaced uses of NULL with nullptr, and moved some comments to avoid
having to add { ... }.
Though the message being printed has a 'Warning: ' prefix I could have
changed from using printf_filtered to use warning, however, I haven't
done that in this commit as that would change what GDB outputs and I
wanted this commit NOT to change the output.
There should be no user visible changes after this commit.

I noticed that deprecated aliases that have a prefix don't give a
deprecated command warning. For example looking in mi/mi-main.c we
see this:

So both 'set target-async' and 'show target-async' are deprecated and
should be giving a warning, however, in use we see no warning given.
This is a consequence of how the code that should give this
warning (deprecated_cmd_warning) performs a second command lookup in
order to distinguish between aliases and real commands, and that the
code that calls this (lookup_cmd_1) strips off prefix commands as it
calls itself recursively.
As a result when we are considering an alias like 'set target-async'
we first enter lookup_cmd_1 with text = "set target-async", we spot
the 'set' command prefix and then recursively call lookup_cmd_1 with
text = "target-async".
We spot that 'target-async' is a known alias but that it is
deprecated, and so call deprecated_cmd_warning passing in the value of
text, which remember is now "target-async".
In deprecated_cmd_warning we again perform a command lookup starting
from the top-level cmdlist, but now we're trying to find just
"target-async", this fails (as this command requires the 'set' prefix,
and so no warning is given.
I resolved this issue by passing a command list to the function
deprecated_cmd_warning, this is the list in which the command can be
found.
A new test is added to cover this case.
However, there is an additional problem which will be addressed in a
subsequent patch.
Consider this GDB session:
(gdb) define set xxx_yyy

Notice the warning mentions 'qqq_aaa' and 'xxx_yyy', I consider this
to be wrong. I think the proper warning should read:

What's happened is during tab completion the alias has been resolved
to the actual command being aliased, and at this stage the warning is
issued. Clearly this is not what we want during tab completion.
In this commit I add a new parameter to the lookup function, a boolean
that indicates if the lookup is being done as part of completion.
This flag is used to suppress the warning. Now we get the expected
behaviour, the alias completes without any warning, but the warning is
still given once the user executes the alias.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

I noticed a couple of spots where the "disassemble" could style its

Prior to commit 56bcdbea2b, the from_tty keyword argument to the
Python function gdb.execute controlled whether the command took input
from the terminal. When from_tty=True, "starti" and similar commands
prompted the user:
(gdb) python gdb.execute("starti", from_tty=True)
The program being debugged has been started already.
Start it from the beginning? (y or n) y
Starting program: /bin/true
Program stopped.
When from_tty=False, these commands did not prompt the user, and "yes"
was assumed:
(gdb) python gdb.execute("starti", from_tty=False)
Program stopped.
However, after commit 56bcdbea2b, the from_tty keyword argument no
longer had this effect. For example, as of commit 7ade7fba75:
(gdb) python gdb.execute("starti", from_tty=True)
The program being debugged has been started already.
Start it from the beginning? (y or n) [answered Y; input not from terminal]
Starting program: /bin/true
Program stopped.
Note the "[answered Y; input not from terminal]" in the output even
though from_tty=True was requested.
Looking at commit 56bcdbea2b, it seems that the behaviour of the
from_tty argument was changed accidentally. The commit message said:
Let gdb.execute handle multi-line commands
This changes the Python API so that gdb.execute can now handle
multi-line commands, like "commands" or "define".
and there was no mention of changing the effect of the from_tty
argument. It looks as though the code for setting the instream to
nullptr was accidentally moved from execute_user_command() to
execute_control_commands() along with the other scoped restores.
Accordingly, the simplest way to fix this is to partially reverse
commit 56bcdbea2b by moving the code for setting the instream to
nullptr back to execute_user_command() where it was to begin with.
Additionally, add a test case to reduce the risk of similar breakage
in future.

Use the linkage name if it exists
The disassembler no longer demangles function names in its output. So
we see things like this:
(gdb) disassemble tree_insert
Dump of assembler code for function _Z11tree_insertP4nodei:

Instead of this:
(gdb) disassemble tree_insert
Dump of assembler code for function tree_insert(node*, int):
....
This is because find_pc_partial_function now returns the linkage name
rather than the demangled name.

This patch fixes the problem by introducing a new "overload" of
find_pc_partial_function, which returns the general_symbol_info rather
than simply the name. This lets the disassemble command choose which
name to show.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 32.

The cmd_type function only has a single caller, which is in the CLI
implementation code. This patch removes the function, and moves the
cmd_types enum definition from command.h to cli-decode.h, fixing an 18
year old FIXME.

Currently, a user can define an alias, but cannot have default
arguments for this alias.
This patch modifies the 'alias' command so that default args can
be provided.
(gdb) h alias
Define a new command that is an alias of an existing command.
Usage: alias [-a] [--] ALIAS = COMMAND [DEFAULT-ARGS...]
ALIAS is the name of the alias command to create.
COMMAND is the command being aliased to.
Options:
-a
Specify that ALIAS is an abbreviation of COMMAND.
Abbreviations are not used in command completion..
GDB will automatically prepend the provided DEFAULT-ARGS to the list
of arguments explicitly provided when using ALIAS.
Use "help aliases" to list all user defined aliases and their default args.
Examples:
Make "spe" an alias of "set print elements":
alias spe set print elements
Make "elms" an alias of "elements" in the "set print" command:
alias -a set print elms set print elements
Make "btf" an alias of "backtrace -full -past-entry -past-main" :
alias btf = backtrace -full -past-entry -past-main
Make "wLapPeu" an alias of 2 nested "with":
alias wLapPeu = with language pascal -- with print elements unlimited --

The way 'default-args' is implemented makes it trivial to set default
args also for GDB commands (such as "backtrace") and for GDB pre-defined
aliases (such as "bt"). It was however deemed better to not allow to
define default arguments for pre-defined commands and aliases, to avoid
users believing that e.g. default args for "backtrace" would apply to "bt".
If needed, default-args could be allowed for GDB predefined commands
and aliases by adding a command
'set default-args GDB_COMMAND_OR_PREDEFINED_ALIAS [DEFAULT-ARGS...]'.
* 'alias' command now has a completer that helps to complete:
- ALIAS (if the user defines an alias after a prefix),
- the aliased COMMAND
- the possible options for the aliased COMMAND.
* Help and apropos commands show the definitions of the aliases
that have default arguments, e.g.
(gdb) help backtrace
backtrace, btf, where, bt
alias btf = backtrace -full -past-entry -past-main
Print backtrace of all stack frames, or innermost COUNT frames.

Readline has a styling feature for completion -- if it is enabled, the
common prefix of completions will be displayed in a different style.
This doesn't work in gdb, because gdb implements its own completer.
This patch implements the feature. However, it doesn't directly use
the Readline feature, because gdb can do a bit better: it can let the
user control the styling using the existing mechanisms.
This version incorporates an Emacs idea, via Eli: style the prefix,
the "difference character", and the suffix differently.

I was inspired by a series of patches merged by Alan Modra in the other
projects, so I did the same in GDB with a bit of Coccinelle and grep.
This patch removes the unnecessary NULL checks before calls to xfree.
They are unnecessary because xfree already does a NULL check. Since
free is supposed to handle NULL values correctly, the NULL check in
xfree itself is also questionable, but I've left it there for now.
