This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

A patch later in this series will make frame_info_ptr access some
fields internal to frame_info, which we don't want to expose outside of
frame.c. Move the frame_info_ptr class to frame.h, and the definitions
to frame.c. Remove frame-info.c and frame-info.h.

struct compile_instance needs to be visible to users, since we use
std::unique<compile_instance>. language.c and c-lang.c currently
includes compile-internal.h for this reason, which kind of defeats the
purpose of having an "internal" header file.

PR symtab/29105 shows a number of situations where symbol lookup can
result in the expansion of too many CUs.
What happens is that lookup_signed_typename will try to look up a type
like "signed int". In cooked_index_functions::expand_symtabs_matching,
when looping over languages, the C++ case will canonicalize this type
name to be "int" instead. Then this method will proceed to expand
every CU that has an entry for "int" -- i.e., nearly all of them. A
crucial component of this is that the caller, objfile::lookup_symbol,
does not do this canonicalization, so when it tries to find the symbol
for "signed int", it fails -- causing the loop to continue.
This patch fixes the problem by introducing name canonicalization for
C. The idea here is that, by making C and C++ agree on the canonical
name when a symbol name can have multiple spellings, we avoid the bad
behavior in objfile::lookup_symbol (and any other such code -- I don't
know if there is any).
Unlike C++, C only has a few situations where canonicalization is
needed. And, in particular, due to the lack of overloading (thus
avoiding any issues in linespec) and due to the way c-exp.y works, I
think that no canonicalization is needed during symbol lookup -- only
during symtab construction. This explains why lookup_name_info is not
touched.
The stabs reader is modified on a "best effort" basis.
The DWARF reader needed one small tweak in dwarf2_name to avoid a
regression in dw2-unusual-field-names.exp. I think this is adequately
explained by the comment, but basically this is a scenario that should
not occur in real code, only the gdb test suite.
lookup_signed_typename is simplified. It used to search for two
different type names, but now gdb can search just for the canonical
form.
gdb.dwarf2/enum-type.exp needed a small tweak, because the
canonicalizer turns "unsigned integer" into "unsigned int integer".
It seems better here to use the correct C type name.

The next patch will want to do language->print_type(type, ...), to
print a type in a given language, avoiding a dependency on the current
language. That doesn't work correctly currently, however, because
most language implementations of language_defn::print_type call
c_print_type without passing down the language. There are two
overloads of c_print_type, one that takes a language, and one that
does not. The one that does not uses the current language, defeating
the point of calling language->print_type()...
This commit removes the c_print_type overload that does not take a
language, and adjusts the codebase throughout to always pass down a
language. In most places, there's already an enum language handy.
language_defn::print_type implementations naturally pass down
this->la_language. In a couple spots, like in ada-typeprint.c and
rust-lang.c there's no enum language handy, but the code is written
for a specific language, so we just hardcode the language.
In gnuv3_print_method_ptr, I wasn't sure whether we could hardcode C++
here, and we don't have an enum language handy, so I made it use the
current language, just like today. Can always be improved later.

This removes union exp_element functions that either create such
elements or walk them. struct expression no longer holds
exp_elements. A couple of language_defn methods are also removed, as
they are obsolete.
Note that this patch also removes the print_expression code. The only
in-tree caller of this was from dump_prefix_expression, which is only
called when expression debugging is enabled. Implementing this would
involve a fair amount of code, and it seems to me that prefix dumping
is preferable anyway, as it is unambiguous. So, I have not
reimplemented this feature.

This introduces c_value_print_inner, which implements the
la_value_print_inner method for the C family of languages. In this
patch, it is just a simple wrapper of c_val_print. However,
subsequent patches will convert it to use the value API. The
transformation is done this way to make each patch easier to review.
Future patches will apply this same treatment to other languages as
well.

This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.
This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.
I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.

This commit is preparation work for the next commit, and by itself
makes no user visible change to GDB. I've split this work into a
separate commit in order to make code review easier.
This commit adds a new field 'la_is_string_type_p' to the language
struct, this predicate will return true if a type is a string type for
the given language.
Some languages already have a "is this a string" predicate that I was
able to reuse, while for other languages I've had to add a new
predicate. In this case I took inspiration from the value printing
code for that language - what different conditions would result in
printing something as a string.
A default "is this a string" method has also been added that looks for
TYPE_CODE_STRING, this is the fallback I've used for a couple of
languages.
In this commit I add the new field and initialise it for each
language, however at this stage the new field is never used.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* ada-lang.c (ada_language_defn): Initialise new field.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.
gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

-fsanitize=undefined complains about using operator~ on various enum
types that are used with DEF_ENUM_FLAGS_TYPE. This patch fixes these
problems by explicitly setting the base type for these enums to
unsigned. It also adds a static assert to enum_flags to ensure that
future enums used this way have an unsigned underlying type.

This patch adds *basic* support for C++ to the compile feature. It does
most simple type conversions, including everything that C compile does and
your basic "with-classes" type of C++.
I've written a new compile-support.exp support file which adds a new test
facility for automating and simplifying "compile print" vs "compile code"
testing. See testsuite/lib/compile-support.exp and CompileExpression
for more on that. The tests use this facility extensively.
This initial support has several glaring omissions:
- No template support at all
I have follow-on patches for this, but they add much complexity
to this "basic" support. Consequently, they will be submitted separately.
- Cannot print functions
The code template needs tweaking, and I simply haven't gotten to it yet.
- So-called "special function" support is not included
Using constructors, destructors, operators, etc will not work. I have
follow-on patches for that, but they require some work because of the
recent churn in symbol searching.
- There are several test suite references to "compile/1234" bugs.
I will file bugs and update the test suite's bug references before pushing
these patches.
The test suite started as a copy of the original C-language support, but
I have written tests to exercise the basic functionality of the plug-in.
I've added a new option for outputting debug messages for C++ type-conversion
("debug compile-cplus-types").

This patch changes structs compile_instance and compile_c_instance into
classes.
Because of the nature of the change, there are a number of unavoidably
mechanical changes buried in here, such as turning variable access of the
POD struct into method calls, removing the struct keyword, and changing
access of the plugin from "c_plugin->operation()" to
"plugin ().operation ()".
There is one "non-trivial" change associated with this patch, though.
The type cache and symbol error maps have been moved into the base class,
believing these facilities would be used other language implementations.
[They are indeed re-used by C++.]
gdb/ChangeLog:
* compile/compile-c-support.c (c_get_compile_context): Use `new'
instead of `new_compile_instance'.
* compile/compile-c-symbols.c (compile_instance::insert_symbol_error):
Update description.
If the symbol error map is not initialized, create it.

While working on the parser code, I noticed that yyerror is exported
from each parser. It is used by this code in parse.c:
TRY
{
if (lang->la_parser (&ps))
lang->la_error (NULL);
}
However, it seems to me that la_error will never be called here,
because in every case, la_parser throws an exception on error -- each
implementation of yyerror just calls error.
So, this patch removes la_error and makes all the yyerror functions
static. This is handy primarily because it makes it simpler to make
the expression parsers pure.
Tested by the buildbot.

Currently dwarf2read.c will pass the CU's language to
c_type_print_args -- but this doesn't affect all aspects of type
printing, because some code in c-typeprint.c refers to
current_language.
This patch threads the language through more of the type printing
code, adding an overload to c_type_print. Some uses of
current_language remain, but now they are only in top-level functions.

gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files
|
|
PR rust/21484 notes that watch -location does not work with Rust:
(gdb) watch -location a
syntax error in expression, near `) 0x00007fffffffe0f4'.
update_watchpoint tries to tell gdb that the new expression it creates
has C syntax:
/* The above expression is in C. */
b->language = language_c;
However, update_watchpoint doesn't actually use this language when
re-parsing the expression.
Originally I was going to fix this by saving and restoring the
language in update_watchpoint, but this regressed
gdb.dlang/watch-loc.exp, because the constructed expression actually
has D syntax (specifically the name is not parseable by C).
Next I looked at directly constructing an expression, and not relying
on the parser at all; but it seemed to me that upon a re-set, we'd
want to reparse the type, and there is no existing API to do this
correctly.
So, in the end I made a hook to let each language choose what
expression to use. I made all the languages other than Rust use the C
expression, because that is the status quo ante. However, this is
probably not truly correct. After this patch, at least, it is easy to
correct by someone who knows the language(s) in question.
Regtested by the buildbot.

Nowadays, we pass both val and return value of
value_contents_for_printing (val) to la_val_print. The latter is
unnecessary. This patch removes the second parameter of la_val_print,
and get valaddr in each language's implementation by calling
value_contents_for_printing. Since value_contents_for_printing calls
value_fetch_lazy, I also make VAL non-const.
Note that
- I don't clean up the valaddr usages in each language's routines,
- I don't remove valaddr from apply_ext_lang_val_pretty_printer, and
extension language ops apply_val_pretty_printer.
They can be done in followup patches.

Using ui_file_as_string would imply changing a few prototypes to pass
around source and object file names as std::string. Instead of that,
wrap those two in a new class. This ends up eliminating a small
wrinkle: get_new_file_names and compile_object_load have swapped
parameters. The former takes "source, objfile", while the latter
takes "objfile, source".

This factors out all the yy-variables remapping to a single file,
instead of each parser having to do the same, with different prefixes.
With this, a parser just needs to define the prefix they want and
include yy-remap.h, which does the dirty job.
Note this renames the c_error, ada_error, etc. functions. Writing the
remapping pattern as:
#define yyerror GDB_YY_REMAP (error)
instead of:
#define yyerror GDB_YY_REMAP (yyerror)
would have avoided the renaming. However, that would be problematic
if we have a macro 'foo' in scope, when we write:
#define yyfoo GDB_YY_REMAP (foo)
as that would expand 'foo'.
The c_yyerror etc. naming end ups indicating that this is a yacc
related function more clearly, so feels like a good change, anyway.

This final patch adds the new "compile" command and subcommands, and
all the machinery needed to make it work.
A shared library supplied by gcc is used for all communications with
gcc. Types and most aspects of symbols are provided directly by gdb
to the compiler using this library.
gdb provides some information about the user's code using plain text.
Macros are emitted this way, and DWARF location expressions (and
bounds for VLA) are compiled to C code.
This hybrid approach was taken because, on the one hand, it is better
to provide global declarations and such on demand; but on the other
hand, for local variables, translating DWARF location expressions to C
was much simpler than exporting a full compiler API to gdb -- the same
result, only easier to implement, understand, and debug.
In the ordinary mode, the user's expression is wrapped in a dummy
function. After compilation, gdb inserts the resulting object code
into the inferior, then calls this function.
Access to local variables is provided by noting which registers are
used by location expressions, and passing a structure of register
values into the function. Writes to registers are supported by
copying out these values after the function returns.
This approach was taken so that we could eventually implement other
more interesting features based on this same infrastructure; for
example, we're planning to investigate inferior-side breakpoint
conditions.

This commit removes the "expout*" globals from our parser code, turning
them into a structure that is passed when an expression needs to be
evaluated. This is the initial step to make our parser less
"globalized".
This is mostly a mechanical patch, which creates a structure containing
the "expout*" globals and then modify all the functions that handle them
in order to take the structure as argument. It is big, and has been
reviewed at least 4 times, so I think everything is covered.
