Currently, every internal_error call must be passed __FILE__/__LINE__
explicitly, like:
internal_error (__FILE__, __LINE__, "foo %d", var);
The need to pass in explicit __FILE__/__LINE__ is there probably
because the function predates widespread and portable variadic macros
availability. We can use variadic macros nowadays, and in fact, we
already use them in several places, including the related
gdb_assert_not_reached.
So this patch renames the internal_error function to something else,
and then reimplements internal_error as a variadic macro that expands
__FILE__/__LINE__ itself.
The result is that we now should call internal_error like so:
internal_error ("foo %d", var);
Likewise for internal_warning.
The patch adjusts all calls sites. 99% of the adjustments were done
with a perl/sed script.
The non-mechanical changes are in gdbsupport/errors.h,
gdbsupport/gdb_assert.h, and gdb/gdbarch.py.

[ Assuming arch i386:x86-64, sizeof (int) == 4,
sizeof (long) == sizeof (long long) == 8. ]
Currently we have (decimal for 0x80000000):
...
(gdb) ptype 2147483648
type = unsigned int
...
According to C language rules, unsigned types cannot be used for decimal
constants, so the type should be long instead (reported in PR16377).
Fix this by making sure the type of 2147483648 is long.
The next interesting case is (decimal for 0x8000000000000000):
...
(gdb) ptype 9223372036854775808
type = unsigned long
...
According to the same rules, unsigned long is incorrect.
Current gcc uses __int128 as type, which is allowed, but we don't have that
available in gdb, so the strict response here would be erroring out with
overflow.
Older gcc without __int128 support, as well as clang use an unsigned type, but with
a warning. Interestingly, clang uses "unsigned long long" while gcc uses
"unsigned long", which seems the better choice.
Given that the compilers allow this as a convience, do the same in gdb
and keep type "unsigned long", and make this explicit in parser and test-case.
Furthermore, make sure we error out on overflow instead of truncating in all
cases.
Tested on x86_64-linux with --enable-targets=all.

The next patch will want to do language->print_type(type, ...), to
print a type in a given language, avoiding a dependency on the current
language. That doesn't work correctly currently, however, because
most language implementations of language_defn::print_type call
c_print_type without passing down the language. There are two
overloads of c_print_type, one that takes a language, and one that
does not. The one that does not uses the current language, defeating
the point of calling language->print_type()...
This commit removes the c_print_type overload that does not take a
language, and adjusts the codebase throughout to always pass down a
language. In most places, there's already an enum language handy.
language_defn::print_type implementations naturally pass down
this->la_language. In a couple spots, like in ada-typeprint.c and
rust-lang.c there's no enum language handy, but the code is written
for a specific language, so we just hardcode the language.
In gnuv3_print_method_ptr, I wasn't sure whether we could hardcode C++
here, and we don't have an enum language handy, so I made it use the
current language, just like today. Can always be improved later.

symtab::blockvector is a wrapper around compunit_symtab::blockvector.
It is a bit misleadnig, as it gives the impression that a symtab has a
blockvector. Remove it, change all users to fetch the blockvector
through the compunit instead.

A common pattern for string_file is to want to move out the internal
string buffer, because it is the result of the computation that we want
to return. It is the reason why string_file::string returns a non-const
reference, as explained in the comment. I think it would make sense to
have a dedicated method for that instead and make string_file::string
return a const reference.
This allows removing the explicit std::move in the typical case. Note
that compile_program::compute was missing a move, meaning that the
resulting string was copied. With the new version, it's not possible to
forget to move.

When using Bison 3.8, we get this error:
../../gdb/c-exp.y:3455:1: error: 'void c_print_token(FILE*, int, YYSTYPE)' defined but not used [-Werror=unused-function]
That's because bison 3.8 removed YYPRINT support:
https://savannah.gnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=10047
Accordingly, this patch only defines that function for Bison < 3.8.

This fixes a problem with GDB's address space qualifier parsing. GDB uses
'@' as a way to express an address space in expression evaluation. This can
currently lead to a crash for "Add support for the __flash qualifier on AVR"
(487d975399dfcb2bb2f0998a7d12bd62acdd9fa1), the only user I am aware of.

Note that how the binding of this qualifier is interpreted and resolved for an
address/pointer is target specific. Hence only the prepended qualifier works
for AVR, even if it seems syntactically incorrect. I won't change this for
AVR, as I am not familiar with that target.
Bison now also complains about less conflicts:
Before:

The goal of this patch is to allow target dependent address space qualifiers
in the C++ expression parser. This can be useful for memory examination on
targets that actually use different address spaces in hardware without
having to deep-dive into implementation details of the whole solution.
GDB uses the @ symbol to parse address space qualifiers. The only current
user that I am aware of is the __flash support for avr, which was added in
"Add support for the __flash qualifier on AVR"
(487d975399dfcb2bb2f0998a7d12bd62acdd9fa1)
and only works for C.
One use-case of the AVR patch is:
~~~
const __flash char data_in_flash = 0xab;
int
main (void)
{
const __flash char *pointer_to_flash = &data_in_flash;
}
~~~
~~~
(gdb) print pointer_to_flash
$1 = 0x1e8 <data_in_flash> "\253"
(gdb) print/x *pointer_to_flash
$2 = 0xab
(gdb) x/x pointer_to_flash
0x1e8 <data_in_flash>: 0xXXXXXXab
(gdb)
(gdb) p/x *(char* @flash) pointer_to_flash
$3 = 0xab
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).
For some reason, macro_expand_next does not return a
gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr<char>, like its counterparts macro_expand and
macro_expand_once. This patch fixes that.
macro_buffer::release now returns a gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr<char> too,
which required updating the other callers. The `.release (). release
()` in macro_stringify looks a bit funny, but it's because one release
is for the macro_buffer, and the other is for the unique ptr.
I removed the ATTRIBUTE_UNUSED_RESULT on macro_buffer::release, I don't
really understand why it's there. I don't see how this method could be
called without using the result, that would be an obvious memory leak.
The commit that introduced it (4e4a8b932b7 "Add ATTRIBUTE_UNUSED_RESULT
to macro_buffer") doesn't give any details.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* c-exp.y (scan_macro_expansion): Don't free `expansion`.
(lex_one_token): Update.
* macroexp.c (struct macro_buffer) <release>: Return
gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr<char>.
(macro_stringify): Update.
(macro_expand): Update.
(macro_expand_next): Return gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr<char>.
* macroexp.h (macro_expand_next): Likewise.
I started to look into changing the callbacks in macroexp.h to use
gdb::function_view. However, I noticed that the passed lookup function
was always `standard_macro_lookup`, which looks up a macro in a
`macro_scope` object. Since that doesn't look like a very useful
abstraction, it would be simpler to just pass the scope around and have
the various functions call standard_macro_lookup themselves. This is
what this patch does.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* macroexp.h (macro_lookup_ftype): Remove.
(macro_expand, macro_expand_once, macro_expand_next): Remove
lookup function parameters, add scope parameter.
* macroexp.c (scan, substitute_args, expand, maybe_expand,
macro_expand, macro_expand_once, macro_expand_next): Likewise.
to macro_scope.
* macroscope.c (standard_macro_lookup): Likewise.
* c-exp.y (lex_one_token): Update.
* macrocmd.c (macro_expand_command): Likewise.
PR gdb/18318 notes that gdb will sometimes incorrectly handle hex
floating point input. This turns out to be a bug in the C lexer; the
'p' was not being correctly recognized, and so the exponent was not
always passed to the floating point "from_string" method.
Tested by the buildbot "Fedora-x86_64-m64" builder.
I noticed that cp_canonicalize_string and friends copy a
unique_xmalloc_ptr to a std::string. However, this copy isn't
genuinely needed anywhere, and it serves to slow down DWARF psymbol
reading.
This patch removes the copy and updates the callers to adapt.
This speeds up the reader from 1.906 seconds (mean of 10 runs, of gdb
on a copy of itself) to 1.888 seconds (mean of 10 runs, on the same
copy as the first trial).
The "restrict" patch added some asserts to c-exp.y, but one spot was
A user noticed that "watch -location" would fail with a "restrict"
pointer. The issue here is that if the DWARF mentions "restrict", gdb
will put this into the type name -- but then the C parser will not be
able to parse this type.
This patch adds support for "restrict" and "_Atomic" to the C parser.
C++ doesn't have "restrict", but does have some GCC extensions. The
type printer is changed to handle this difference as well, so that
watch expressions will work properly.
This introduces obstack_strndup and changes gdb to use it.
Note that obstack_strndup works like savestring, and not exactly like
xstrndup. The difference is that obstack_strndup uses the passed-in
length, while xstrndup uses strnlen to choose the length.
This changes copy_name to return a std::string, updating all the
callers. In some cases, an extra copy was removed. This also
required a little bit of constification.
This changes the parsing API so that callers that are interested in
tracking the innermost block must instantiate an
This introduces a new "type_stack" class, and moves all the parser
type stack handling to this class. Parsers that wish to use this
facility must now instantiate this class somehow. I chose this
approach because a minority of the existing parsers require this.
This removes the lexptr and prev_lexptr globals, in favor of members
of parser_state. prev_lexptr could be isolated to each parser, but
