Currently, every internal_error call must be passed __FILE__/__LINE__
explicitly, like:
internal_error (__FILE__, __LINE__, "foo %d", var);
The need to pass in explicit __FILE__/__LINE__ is there probably
because the function predates widespread and portable variadic macros
availability. We can use variadic macros nowadays, and in fact, we
already use them in several places, including the related
gdb_assert_not_reached.
So this patch renames the internal_error function to something else,
and then reimplements internal_error as a variadic macro that expands
__FILE__/__LINE__ itself.
The result is that we now should call internal_error like so:
internal_error ("foo %d", var);
Likewise for internal_warning.
The patch adjusts all calls sites. 99% of the adjustments were done
with a perl/sed script.
The non-mechanical changes are in gdbsupport/errors.h,
gdbsupport/gdb_assert.h, and gdb/gdbarch.py.

This changes GDB to use frame_info_ptr instead of frame_info *
The substitution was done with multiple sequential `sed` commands:
sed 's/^struct frame_info;/class frame_info_ptr;/'
sed 's/struct frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' - which left some
issues in a few files, that were manually fixed.
sed 's/\<frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g'
sed 's/frame_info_ptr $/frame_info_ptr/g' - used to remove whitespace
problems.
The changed files were then manually checked and some 'sed' changes
undone, some constructors and some gets were added, according to what
made sense, and what Tromey originally did

Building on the previous commits, this commit goes through the various
gdbarch_register_name methods and removes all the remaining 'return
NULL' cases, I claim that these either couldn't be hit, or should be
returning the empty string.
In all cases the return of NULL was used if the register number being
passed to gdbarch_register_name was "invalid", i.e. negative, or
greater than the total number of declared registers. I don't believe
either of these cases can occur, and the previous commit asserts that
this is the case. As a result we can simplify the code by removing
these checks. In many cases, where the register names are held in an
array, I was able to add a static assert that the array contains the
correct number of strings, after that, a direct access into the array
is fine.
I don't have any means of testing these changes.

After the commit:
commit 08106042d9f5fdff60c129bf33190639f1a98b2a
Date: Thu May 19 13:20:17 2022 +0100
gdb: move the type cast into gdbarch_tdep
GDB would no longer build using g++ 4.8. The issue appears to be some
confusion caused by GDB having 'struct gdbarch_tdep', but also a
templated function called 'gdbarch_tdep'. Prior to the above commit
the gdbarch_tdep function was not templated, and this compiled just
fine. Note that the above commit compiles just fine with later
versions of g++, so this issue was clearly fixed at some point, though
I've not tried to track down exactly when.
In this commit I propose to fix the g++ 4.8 build problem by renaming
'struct gdbarch_tdep' to 'struct gdbarch_tdep_base'. This rename
better represents that the struct is only ever used as a base class,
and removes the overloading of the name, which allows GDB to build
with g++ 4.8.
I've also updated the comment on 'struct gdbarch_tdep_base' to fix a
typo, and the comment on the 'gdbarch_tdep' function, to mention that
in maintainer mode a run-time type check is performed.

I built GDB for all targets on a x86-64/GNU-Linux system, and
then (accidentally) passed GDB a RISC-V binary, and asked GDB to "run"
the binary on the native target. I got this error:
(gdb) show architecture
The target architecture is set to "auto" (currently "i386").
(gdb) file /tmp/hello.rv32.exe
Reading symbols from /tmp/hello.rv32.exe...
(gdb) show architecture
The target architecture is set to "auto" (currently "riscv:rv32").
(gdb) run
Starting program: /tmp/hello.rv32.exe
../../src/gdb/i387-tdep.c:596: internal-error: i387_supply_fxsave: Assertion `tdep->st0_regnum >= I386_ST0_REGNUM' failed.
What's going on here is this; initially the architecture is i386, this
is based on the default architecture, which is set based on the native
target. After loading the RISC-V executable the architecture of the
current inferior is updated based on the architecture of the
executable.
When we "run", GDB does a fork & exec, with the inferior being
controlled through ptrace. GDB sees an initial stop from the inferior
as soon as the inferior comes to life. In response to this stop GDB
ends up calling save_stop_reason (linux-nat.c), which ends up trying
to read register from the inferior, to do this we end up calling
target_ops::fetch_registers, which, for the x86-64 native target,
calls amd64_linux_nat_target::fetch_registers.
After this I eventually end up in i387_supply_fxsave, different x86
based targets will end in different functions to fetch registers, but
it doesn't really matter which function we end up in, the problem is
this line, which is repeated in many places:
i386_gdbarch_tdep *tdep = (i386_gdbarch_tdep *) gdbarch_tdep (arch);
The problem here is that the ARCH in this line comes from the current
inferior, which, as we discussed above, will be a RISC-V gdbarch, the
tdep field will actually be of type riscv_gdbarch_tdep, not
i386_gdbarch_tdep. After this cast we are relying on undefined
behaviour, in my case I happen to trigger an assert, but this might
not always be the case.
The thing I tried that exposed this problem was of course, trying to
start an executable of the wrong architecture on a native target. I
don't think that the correct solution for this problem is to detect,
at the point of cast, that the gdbarch_tdep object is of the wrong
type, but, I did wonder, is there a way that we could protect
ourselves from incorrectly casting the gdbarch_tdep object?
I think that there is something we can do here, and this commit is the
first step in that direction, though no actual check is added by this
commit.
This commit can be split into two parts:
(1) In gdbarch.h and arch-utils.c. In these files I have modified
gdbarch_tdep (the function) so that it now takes a template argument,
like this:
template<typename TDepType>
static inline TDepType *
gdbarch_tdep (struct gdbarch *gdbarch)
{
struct gdbarch_tdep *tdep = gdbarch_tdep_1 (gdbarch);
return static_cast<TDepType *> (tdep);
}
After this change we are no better protected, but the cast is now
done within the gdbarch_tdep function rather than at the call sites,
this leads to the second, much larger change in this commit,
(2) Everywhere gdbarch_tdep is called, we make changes like this:
- i386_gdbarch_tdep *tdep = (i386_gdbarch_tdep *) gdbarch_tdep (arch);
+ i386_gdbarch_tdep *tdep = gdbarch_tdep<i386_gdbarch_tdep> (arch);
There should be no functional change after this commit.
In the next commit I will build on this change to add an assertion in
gdbarch_tdep that checks we are casting to the correct type.

Now that filtered and unfiltered output can be treated identically, we
can unify the printf family of functions. This is done under the name
"gdb_printf". Most of this patch was written by script.
|
|
Various targets introduce their own commands, which then use
unfiltered output. It's better to use filtered output by default, so
this patch fixes the instances I found.

This commit brings all the changes made by running gdb/copyright.py
as per GDB's Start of New Year Procedure.
For the avoidance of doubt, all changes in this commits were
performed by the script.

avr_io_reg_read_command is an ordinary gdb command, and so should not
be calling reinitialize_more_filter. This patch removes it. I'm
checking this in as obvious. Tested by rebuilding.

Commit 345bd07cce33 ("gdb: fix gdbarch_tdep ODR violation") made a bunch
of files define a *_gdbarch_tdep class that inherits from a gdbarch_tdep
base. But some of these files don't include gdbarch.h, where
gdbarch_tdep is defined. This may cause build errors if gdbarch.h isn't
already included by chance by some other header file. Avoid this by
making them include gdbarch.h.

I would like to be able to use non-trivial types in gdbarch_tdep types.
This is not possible at the moment (in theory), because of the one
definition rule.
To allow it, rename all gdbarch_tdep types to <arch>_gdbarch_tdep, and
make them inherit from a gdbarch_tdep base class. The inheritance is
necessary to be able to pass pointers to all these <arch>_gdbarch_tdep
objects to gdbarch_alloc, which takes a pointer to gdbarch_tdep.
These objects are never deleted through a base class pointer, so I
didn't include a virtual destructor. In the future, if gdbarch objects
deletable, I could imagine that the gdbarch_tdep objects could become
owned by the gdbarch objects, and then it would become useful to have a
virtual destructor (so that the gdbarch object can delete the owned
gdbarch_tdep object). But that's not necessary right now.
It turns out that RISC-V already has a gdbarch_tdep that is
non-default-constructible, so that provides a good motivation for this
change.
Most changes are fairly straightforward, mostly needing to add some
casts all over the place. There is however the xtensa architecture,
doing its own little weird thing to define its gdbarch_tdep. I did my
best to adapt it, but I can't test those changes.

The bug fixed by this [1] patch was caused by an out-of-bounds access to
a value's content. The code gets the value's content (just a pointer)
and then indexes it with a non-sensical index.
This made me think of changing functions that return value contents to
return array_views instead of a plain pointer. This has the advantage
that when GDB is built with _GLIBCXX_DEBUG, accesses to the array_view
are checked, making bugs more apparent / easier to find.
This patch changes the return types of these functions, and updates
callers to call .data() on the result, meaning it's not changing
anything in practice. Additional work will be needed (which can be done
little by little) to make callers propagate the use of array_view and
reap the benefits.

I wrote this while debugging a problem where the expected unwinder for a
frame wasn't used. It adds messages to show which unwinders are
considered for a frame, why they are not selected (if an exception is
thrown), and finally which unwinder is selected in the end.
To be able to show a meaningful, human-readable name for the unwinders,
add a "name" field to struct frame_unwind, and update all instances to
include a name.
Here's an example of the output:
[frame] frame_unwind_find_by_frame: this_frame=0

When trying to do pretty much anything that requires unwinding a frame
on AVR, we get
/home/simark/src/wt/avr/gdb/trad-frame.h:143: internal-error: LONGEST trad_frame_saved_reg::addr() const: Assertion `m_kind == trad_frame_saved_reg_kind::ADDR' failed.
This is likely coming from the trad-frame refactor in 098caef485a4
("Refactor struct trad_frame_saved_regs"). Here's an example of how to
reproduce it:
In one terminal:
$ cat test.c
int foo(int x)
{
return x * 7;
}
int main() {
return foo(2);
}
$ avr-gcc -gdwarf-4 -mmcu=atmega2560 test.c
$ /tmp/simavr/bin/simavr --mcu atmega2560 -g a.out
Loaded 330 .text at address 0x0
Loaded 0 .data
And in another one:
$ ./gdb -q -nx --data-directory=data-directory a.out -ex "tar rem :1234" -ex "b foo" -ex c -ex bt
Reading symbols from a.out...
Remote debugging using :1234
0x00000000 in __vectors ()
Breakpoint 1 at 0x110: file test.c, line 3.
Note: automatically using hardware breakpoints for read-only addresses.
Continuing.
Breakpoint 1, foo (x=2) at test.c:3
3 return x * 7;
#0 foo (x=2) at test.c:3
/home/simark/src/wt/avr/gdb/trad-frame.h:143: internal-error: LONGEST trad_frame_saved_reg::addr() const: Assertion `m_kind == trad_frame_saved_reg_kind::ADDR' failed.
What the AVR code does is:
1. In avr_scan_prologue, in the block that says "First stage of the
prologue scanning.", look for "push rX" instructions and note that rX
is saved on the stack. But instead of putting the actual stack
address directly, it puts an offset (from the previous frame's sp).
2. Back in avr_frame_unwind_cache, in the block that says "Adjust all
the saved registers", adjust all these values to be real stack
addresses.
To check whether a register was assigned an address (and therefore if it
needs adjustment), the code does:
if (info->saved_regs[i].addr () > 0)
Since commit 098caef485a4, it's invalid to call the `addr` getter of
trad_frame_saved_reg if the register hasn't been assigned an address.
Instead, the code could use the `is_addr` getter to verify if the
register has been assigned an address. This is what this patch does.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* avr-tdep.c (avr_frame_unwind_cache): Use
trad_frame_saved_reg::is_addr.

The current_top_target function is a hidden dependency on the current
inferior. Since I'd like to slowly move towards reducing our dependency
on the global current state, remove this function and make callers use
current_inferior ()->top_target ()
There is no expected change in behavior, but this one step towards
making those callers use the inferior from their context, rather than
refer to the global current inferior.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* target.h (current_top_target): Remove, make callers use the
current inferior instead.
* target.c (current_top_target): Remove.

With the new member functions for struct trad_frame_saved_reg, there is no
need to invoke some of the set/get functions anymore. This patch removes
those and adjusts all callers.
Even though the most natural initial state of a saved register value is
UNKNOWN, there are target backends relying on the previous initial state
of REALREG set to a register's own number. I noticed this in at least a
couple targets: aarch64 and riscv.
Because of that, I decided to keep the reset function that sets the set of
register values to REALREG. I can't exercise all the targets to make sure
the initial state change won't break things, hence why it is risky to change
the default.
Validated with --enable-targets=all on aarch64-linux Ubuntu 18.04/20.04.

The following patch drops the overloading going on with the trad_frame_saved_reg
struct and defines a new struct with a KIND enum and a union of different
fields.
The new struct looks like this:
struct trad_frame_saved_reg
{
setters/getters
...
private:
trad_frame_saved_reg_kind m_kind;
union {
LONGEST value;
int realreg;
LONGEST addr;
const gdb_byte *value_bytes;
} m_reg;
};
And the enums look like this:
/* Describes the kind of encoding a stored register has. */
enum class trad_frame_saved_reg_kind
{
/* Register value is unknown. */
UNKNOWN = 0,
/* Register value is a constant. */
VALUE,
/* Register value is in another register. */
REALREG,
/* Register value is at an address. */
ADDR,
/* Register value is a sequence of bytes. */
VALUE_BYTES
};
The patch also adds setters/getters and updates all the users of the old
struct.
It is worth mentioning that due to the previous overloaded nature of the
fields, some tdep files like to store negative offsets and indexes in the ADDR
field, so I kept the ADDR as LONGEST instead of CORE_ADDR. Those cases may
be better supported by a new enum entry.
I have not addressed those cases in this patch to prevent unwanted breakage,
given I have no way to test some of the targets. But it would be nice to
clean those up eventually.
The change to frame-unwind.* is to constify the parameter being passed to the
unwinding functions, given we now accept a "const gdb_byte *" for value bytes.
Tested on aarch64-linux/Ubuntu 20.04/18.04 and by building GDB with
--enable-targets=all.

Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.
So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).
One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.
Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.
The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

A later patch in this series will rewrite enum_flags fixing some API
holes. That would cause build failures around code using
type_instance_flags. Or rather, that should be using it, but wasn't.
This patch fixes it by using type_instance_flags throughout instead of
plain integers.
Note that we can't make the seemingly obvious change to struct
type::instance_flags:
- unsigned instance_flags : 9;
+ ENUM_BITFIELD (type_instance_flag_value) instance_flags : 9;
Because G++ complains then that 9 bits isn't sufficient for holding
all values of type_instance_flag_value.
So the patch adds an type::instance_flags() method, which takes care
of casting appropriately, and adds a separate type::set_instance_flags
method, following the pattern of the ongoing TYPE_XXX macro
elimination. This converts uses of TYPE_INSTANCE_FLAGS to
type::instance_flags() in the places where the code was already being
touched, but there are still many references to the
TYPE_INSTANCE_FLAGS macro left behind. Those could/should be fully
replaced at some point.

The AVR architecture is a Harvard one, meaning it has different memory
spaces for code and data. In GDB, this is dealt with by having the data
(SRAM) addresses start at 0x00800000. When interpreting an integer as
an address (converting to a CORE_ADDR), we currently always generate a
data address. This doesn't work for some cases described below, where
the integer is meant to represent a code address.
This patch changes avr_integer_to_address so that it generates the
correct type of address (code or data) based on the passed type.
Using the simavr.exp board, I didn't see any regressions when running
the gdb.base/*.exp tests. A few tests go from fail to pass, but none
from pass to fail. There are a few new fails and unresolved, but it's
just because some tests manage to make more progress before failing in a
different way.
In practice, it fixes disassembling by address, as described in the PR:
- (gdb) disassemble 0x12a,0x12b
- Dump of assembler code from 0x12a to 0x12b:
- 0x0000012a <main+0>: push r28
- End of assembler dump.
+ (gdb) disassemble 0x12a,0x12b
+ Dump of assembler code from 0x80012a to 0x80012b:
+ 0x0080012a: nop
+ End of assembler dump.
And also, setting a breakpoint by address:
- (gdb) p &main
- $1 = (int (*)(void)) 0x12a <main>
- (gdb) b *0x12a
- Breakpoint 1 at 0x80012a
+ (gdb) p &main
+ $1 = (int (*)(void)) 0x12a <main>
+ (gdb) b *0x12a
+ Breakpoint 1 at 0x12a: file test-avr.c, line 3.
+ Note: automatically using hardware breakpoints for read-only addresses.
gdb/ChangeLog:
PR gdb/13519
* avr-tdep.c (avr_integer_to_address): Return data or code
address accordingly to the second 'type' argument of the
function.

Remove TYPE_CODE, changing all the call sites to use type::code
directly. This is quite a big diff, but this was mostly done using sed
and coccinelle. A few call sites were done by hand.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* gdbtypes.h (TYPE_CODE): Remove. Change all call sites to use
type::code instead.

/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
/home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
_initialize_dcache (void)
^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:
commit 481695ed5f6e0a8a9c9c50bfac1cdd2b3151e6c9
Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org>
Date: Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700
Remove unnecessary function prototypes.
I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these
functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.

gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
|
|
Running the selftests on an all-targets build, I get:
Running selftest help_doc_invariants.
help doc broken invariant: command 'info io_registers' help doc first line is not terminated with a '.' character
Self test failed: self-test failed at /home/simark/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/unittests/help-doc-selftests.c:95
Add a period at the end of the doc of that command, and make it a bit
nicer in general.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* avr-tdep.c (_initialize_avr_tdep): Improve help of command
"info io_registers".

Andreas Schwab and John Baldwin pointed out some bugs in the header
sorting patch; and I noticed that the output was not correct when
limited to a subset of files (a bug in my script).
So, I'm reverting the patch. I may try again after fixing the issues
pointed out.

This patch sorts the include files for the files [a-f]*.[chyl].
The patch was written by a script.
Tested by the buildbot.
I will follow up with patches to sort the remaining files, by sorting
a subset, testing them, and then checking them in.

This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.
Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.
gdb/ChangeLog:
Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

The recent C++ification of target_ops replaced references to the old
"current_target" squashed target throughout with references to a
"target_stack" pointer. I had picked the "target_stack" name very
early in the multi-target work, and managed to stick with it, even
though it's a bit of a misnomer, since it isn't really a "target
stack" object, but a pointer into the current top target in the stack.
As I'm splitting more pieces off of the multi-target branch, I've come
to think that it's better to rename it now. A following patch will
introduce a new class to represent a target stack, and "target_stack"
would be _its_ ideal name. (In the branch, the class is called
a_target_stack to work around the clash.)
Thus this commit renames target_stack to current_top_target and
replaces all references throughout. Also, while at it,
current_top_target is made a function instead of a pointer, to make it
possible to change its internal implementation without leaking
implementation details out. In a couple patches, the implementation
of the function will change to refer to a target stack object, and
then further down the multi-target work, it'll change again to find
the right target stack for the current inferior.

I.e., use C++ virtual methods and inheritance instead of tables of
function pointers.
Unfortunately, there's no way to do a smooth transition. ALL native
targets in the tree must be converted at the same time. I've tested
all I could with cross compilers and with help from GCC compile farm,
but naturally I haven't been able to test many of the ports. Still, I
made a best effort to port everything over, and while I expect some
build problems due to typos and such, which should be trivial to fix,
I don't expect any design problems.
* Implementation notes:
- The flattened current_target is gone. References to current_target
or current_target.beneath are replaced with references to
target_stack (the top of the stack) directly.
- To keep "set debug target" working, this adds a new debug_stratum
layer that sits on top of the stack, prints the debug, and delegates
to the target beneath.
In addition, this makes the shortname and longname properties of
target_ops be virtual methods instead of data fields, and makes the
debug target defer those to the target beneath. This is so that
debug code sprinkled around that does "if (debugtarget) ..." can
transparently print the name of the target beneath.
A patch later in the series actually splits out the
shortname/longname methods to a separate structure, but I preferred
to keep that chance separate as it is associated with changing a bit
the design of how targets are registered and open.
- Since you can't check whether a C++ virtual method is overridden,
the old method of checking whether a target_ops implements a method
by comparing the function pointer must be replaced with something
else.
Some cases are fixed by adding a parallel "can_do_foo" target_ops
methods. E.g.,:
+ for (t = target_stack; t != NULL; t = t->beneath)
{
- if (t->to_create_inferior != NULL)
+ if (t->can_create_inferior ())
break;
}
Others are fixed by changing void return type to bool or int return
type, and have the default implementation return false or -1, to
indicate lack of support.
- make-target-delegates was adjusted to generate C++ classes and
methods.
It needed tweaks to grok "virtual" in front of the target method
name, and for the fact that methods are no longer function pointers.
(In particular, the current code parsing the return type was simple
because it could simply parse up until the '(' in '(*to_foo)'.
It now generates a couple C++ classes that inherit target_ops:
dummy_target and debug_target.
Since we need to generate the class declarations as well, i.e., we
need to emit methods twice, we now generate the code in two passes.
- The core_target global is renamed to avoid conflict with the
"core_target" class.
- ctf/tfile targets
init_tracefile_ops is replaced by a base class that is inherited by
both ctf and tfile.
- bsd-uthread
The bsd_uthread_ops_hack hack is gone. It's not needed because
nothing was extending a target created by bsd_uthread_target.
- remote/extended-remote targets
This is a first pass, just enough to C++ify target_ops.
A later pass will convert more free functions to methods, and make
remote_state be truly per remote instance, allowing multiple
simultaneous instances of remote targets.
- inf-child/"native" is converted to an actual base class
(inf_child_target), that is inherited by all native targets.
- GNU/Linux
The old weird double-target linux_ops mechanism in linux-nat.c, is
gone, replaced by adding a few virtual methods to linux-nat.h's
target_ops, called low_XXX, that the concrete linux-nat
implementations override. Sort of like gdbserver's
linux_target_ops, but simpler, for requiring only one
target_ops-like hierarchy, which spares implementing the same method
twice when we need to forward the method to a low implementation.
The low target simply reimplements the target_ops method directly in
that case.
There are a few remaining linux-nat.c hooks that would be better
converted to low_ methods like above too. E.g.:
linux_nat_set_new_thread (t, x86_linux_new_thread);
linux_nat_set_new_fork (t, x86_linux_new_fork);
linux_nat_set_forget_process
That'll be done in a follow up patch.
- We can no longer use functions like x86_use_watchpoints to install
custom methods on an arbitrary base target.
The patch replaces instances of such a pattern with template mixins.
For example memory_breakpoint_target defined in target.h, or
x86_nat_target in x86-nat.h.
- linux_trad_target, MIPS and Alpha GNU/Linux
The code in the new linux-nat-trad.h/c files which was split off of
inf-ptrace.h/c recently, is converted to a C++ base class, and used
by the MIPS and Alpha GNU/Linux ports.
- BSD targets
The
$architecture x NetBSD/OpenBSD/FreeBSD
support matrix complicates things a bit. There's common BSD target
code, and there's common architecture-specific code shared between
the different BSDs. Currently, all that is stiched together to form
a final target, via the i386bsd_target, x86bsd_target,
fbsd_nat_add_target functions etc.
This introduces new fbsd_nat_target, obsd_nat_target and
nbsd_nat_target classes that serve as base/prototype target for the
corresponding BSD variant.
And introduces generic i386/AMD64 BSD targets, to be used as
template mixin to build a final target. Similarly, a generic SPARC
target is added, used by both BSD and Linux ports.
- bsd_kvm_add_target, BSD libkvm target
I considered making bsd_kvm_supply_pcb a virtual method, and then
have each port inherit bsd_kvm_target and override that method, but
that was resulting in lots of unjustified churn, so I left the
function pointer mechanism alone.

This patch started by changing target_read_alloc_1 to return a
byte_vector, to avoid manual memory management (in target_read_alloc_1
and in the callers). To communicate failures to the callers, it
actually returns a gdb::optional<gdb::byte_vector>.
Adjusting target_read_stralloc was a bit more tricky, since it wants to
return a buffer of char, and not gdb_byte. Since you can't just cast a
gdb::byte_vector into a gdb::def_vector<char>, I made
target_read_alloc_1 templated, so both versions (that return vectors of
gdb_byte and char) are generated. Since target_read_stralloc now
returns a gdb::char_vector instead of a gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr<char>, a
few callers need to be adjusted.

pseudo_register_read and pseudo_register_read_value
pseudo registers are either from raw registers or memory, so
gdbarch methods pseudo_register_read and pseudo_register_read_value
should have regcache object which only have read methods. In other
words, we should disallow writing to regcache in these two gdbarch
methods. In order to apply this restriction, this patch adds a new
class readable_regcache, derived from reg_buffer, and it only has
raw_read and cooked_read methods. regcache is derived from
readable_regcache. This patch also passes readable_regcache instead of
regcache to gdbarch methods pseudo_register_read and
pseudo_register_read_value.
This patch moves raw_read* and cooked_read* methods to readable_regcache,
which is straightforward. One thing not straightforward is that I split
regcache::xfer_part to readable_regcache::read_part and regcache::write_part,
because readable_regcache can only have methods to read.
readable_regcache is an abstract base class, and it has a pure virtual
function raw_update, because I don't want readable_regcache know where
these raw registers are from. They can be from either the target
(readwrite regcache) or the regcache itself (readonly regcache).

The patch later in this series will move regcache's raw_read and
cooked_read methods to a new class regcache_read, and regcache is
dervied from it. Also pass regcache_read instead of regcache to gdbarch
methods pseudo_register_read and pseudo_register_read_value. In order
to prepare for this change, this patch changes regcache_raw_read to
regcache->raw_read. On the other hand, since we are in C++, I prefer
using class method (regcache->raw_read).

This patch constifies add_info and updates all the info commands. The
bulk of this patch was written using a script; and then I did a manual
pass to fix up the remaining compilation errors.
I could not compile every changed file; in particular nto-procfs.c,
gnu-nat.c, and darwin-nat-info.c; but I at least tried to check the
correctness by inspection.

This changes the interfaces to init_type and arch_type to take the
type length in bits as input (instead of as bytes). The routines
assert that the length is a multiple of TARGET_CHAR_BIT.
For consistency, arch_flags_type is changed likewise, so that now
all type creation interfaces always use length in bits.
All callers are updated in the straightforward manner.
The assert actually found a bug in read_range_type, where the
init_integer_type routine was called with a wrong argument (probably
a bug introduced with the conversion to use init_integer_type).

This patch changes GDB to use disassembler selected by opcodes in
default, so that we don't have to duplicate the selection logic again
in GDB side. For example, gdb/score-tdep.c has
static int
score_print_insn (bfd_vma memaddr, struct disassemble_info *info)
{
if (info->endian == BFD_ENDIAN_BIG)
return print_insn_big_score (memaddr, info);
else
return print_insn_little_score (memaddr, info);
}
and opcodes/disassemble.c has the same logic,
case bfd_arch_score:
if (big)
disassemble = print_insn_big_score;
else
disassemble = print_insn_little_score;
This patch removes the logic in GDB and calls
opcodes/disassemble.c:disassembler in default to select disassembler.

GDB is currently not aware that wchar_t is a built-in type in C++
mode. This is usually not a problem because the debug info describes
the type, so when you have a program loaded, you don't notice this.
However, if you try expressions involving wchar_t before a program is
loaded, gdb errors out:
(gdb) p (wchar_t)-1
No symbol table is loaded. Use the "file" command.
(gdb) p L"hello"
No type named wchar_t.
(gdb) ptype L"hello"
No type named wchar_t.
This commit teaches gdb about the type. After:
(gdb) p (wchar_t)-1
$1 = -1 L'\xffffffff'
(gdb) p L"hello"
$2 = L"hello"
(gdb) ptype L"hello"
type = wchar_t [6]
Unlike char16_t/char32_t, unfortunately, the underlying type of
wchar_t is implementation dependent, both size and signness. So this
requires adding a couple new gdbarch hooks.
I grepped the GCC code base for WCHAR_TYPE and WCHAR_TYPE_SIZE, and it
seems to me that the majority of the ABIs have a 4-byte signed
wchar_t, so that's what I made the default for GDB too. And then I
looked for which ports have a 16-bit and/or unsigned wchar_t, and made
GDB follow suit.
