This patch teaches GDB to support gnu vector in inferior calls. As a
result, fails in gdb.base/gnu_vector.exp are fixed. The calling
convention of gnu vector isn't documented in the AAPCS, because it
is the GCC extension. I checked the gcc/config/arm/arm.c, understand
how GCC pass arguments and return values, and do the same in GDB side.
The patch is tested with both hard float and soft float on arm-linux.

Current arm_return_in_memory isn't friendly to adding new things in it.
Moreover, a lot of stuff are about APCS, which is not used nowadays (AAPCS
is being used). This patch is to refactor arm_return_in_memory, so that
some code can be shared for both APCS and AAPCS at the beginning of
arm_return_in_memory, and then each ABI (APCS and AAPCS) are processed
separately.

GDBServer.
ARM can have multiple breakpoint types based on the instruction set
it's currently in: arm, thumb or thumb2.
GDBServer needs to know what breakpoint is to be inserted at location
when inserting a breakpoint.
This is handled by the breakpoint_kind_from_pc and sw_breakpoint_from_kind
target ops introduced in a previous patch, this patch adds the
arm_breakpoint_kind_from_pc and arm_sw_breakpoint_from_kind implementation so
that the proper breakpoint type is returned based on the pc.
Also in order to share some code with GDB a new file called arm.c have been
introduced in arch/.
While this file does not contain much yet future patches will add more
to it thus the inclusion at this stage.
No regressions on Ubuntu 14.04 on ARMv7 and x86.

There are a bunch of places where a void* is implicitely casted into a
gdb_byte*. The auto-insert-casts script added explicit casts at those
places. However, in many cases, it makes more sense to just change the
void* to a gdb_byte*.

Note: I needed to split this patch in two, otherwise it's too big for
the mailing list.
This patch adds explicit casts to situations where a void pointer is
assigned to a pointer to the "real" type. Building in C++ mode requires
those assignments to use an explicit cast. This includes, for example:
- callback arguments (cleanups, comparison functions, ...)
- data attached to some object (objfile, program space, etc) in the form
of a void pointer
- "user data" passed to some function
This patch comes from the commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert
casts needed for C++", taken from Pedro's C++ branch.
Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified, so the
native files for other arches will need to be dealt with separately.
I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested. To my
surprise, a test case (selftest.exp) had to be adjusted.
Here's the ChangeLog entry. Again, this was relatively quick to make
despite the length, thanks to David Malcom's script, although I don't
believe it's very useful information in that particular case...

Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the
allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when
assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case
more often than not).
The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit
"(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I
validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to
make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I
could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc.
Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing
it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time.
Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This
means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be
dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to
build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't
know.
I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.

This patch is part of the make-gdb-buildable-in-C++ effort. The idea is
to change some calls to the xmalloc family of functions to calls to the
equivalents in the XNEW family. This avoids adding an explicit cast, so
it keeps the code a bit more readable. Some of them also map relatively
well to a C++ equivalent (XNEW (struct foo) -> new foo), so it will be
possible to do scripted replacements if needed.
I only changed calls that were obviously allocating memory for one or
multiple "objects". Allocation of variable sizes (such as strings or
buffer handling) will be for later (and won't use XNEW).

architecture-specific files. For those I'll have to rely on the
buildbot or people complaining that I broke their gdb.

This patch is mostly extracted from Pedro's C++ branch. It adds explicit
casts from integer to enum types, where it is really the intention to do
so. This could be because we are ...
* iterating on enum values (we need to iterate on an equivalent integer)
* converting from a value read from bytes (dwarf attribute, agent
expression opcode) to the equivalent enum
* reading the equivalent integer value from another language (Python/Guile)
An exception to that is the casts in regcache.c. It seems to me like
struct regcache's register_status field could be a pointer to an array of
enum register_status. Doing so would waste a bit of memory (4 bytes
used by the enum vs 1 byte used by the current signed char, for each
register). If we switch to C++11 one day, we can define the underlying
type of an enum type, so we could have the best of both worlds.

I think that the CHECK_TYPEDEF macro is not necessary, and even a bit
annoying. It makes unclear the fact that the "type" variables gets
overwritten. It has actually bitten me a few times. I think the
following, explicit form, is better.
type = check_typedef (type);
This patches changes all instances of CHECK_TYPEDEF for an equivalent
call to check_typedef. The bulk of the change was done with this sed:
sed -i 's/CHECK_TYPEDEF (\([^)]*\));/\1 = check_typedef (\1);/' <file>.c
The ChangeLog was generated using David Malcom's generate_changelog.py.
I manually fixed those places where it gets the wrong function name,
hopefully all of them.
The patch was built-tested, and I ran a few smoke tests.

This patch is to remove the global variable arm_linux_vfp_register_count
from arm-linux-nat.c. This global variable is set when native gdb
looks for the right target description according HWCAP. However,
'struct gdbarch_tdep' has already had a field have_vfp_registers, which
is a boolean about whether target has vfp registers or not. This
patch converts this boolean field to a numeric counter to replace
global variable arm_linux_vfp_register_count.

On ARM systems, gdb must determine which style of breakpoint to use
(see the comments at the beginning of gdb/arm-linux-tdep.c). In
arm_gdbarch_init we only attempt to extract the eabi version from the
ELF binary if it is a ELFOSABI_NONE binary. If the binary is
ELFOSABI_GNU instead, we end up defaulting to the old style OABI
syscall breakpoint instruction. On a Linux kernel built without
CONFIG_OABI_COMPAT, this triggers a SIGILL in ld when attempting to
execute any ELFOSABI_GNU program.

We concluded that gdbarch_in_function_epilogue_p is misnamed, since it
returns true if the given PC is one instruction after the one that
destroyed the stack (which isn't necessarily inside an epilogue),
therefore it should be renamed to stack_frame_destroyed_p.
I also took the liberty of renaming the arch-specific implementations to
*_stack_frame_destroyed_p as well for consistency.

Hi,
I see many fails in dw2-dir-file-name.exp on arm target when test
case is compiled with -marm, however, these fails are disappeared when
test case is compiled with -mthumb.
The difference of pass and fail shown below is that "0x000085d4 in" isn't
printed out, but test case expects to see it.

This difference is caused by setting breakpoint at the first instruction
in the function (actually, the first instruction in prologue, at [1]),
so that frame_show_address returns false, and print_frame doesn't print the
address.

Then, it must be the arm_skip_prologue's fault that unable to skip
instructions in prologue. At the end of arm_skip_prologue, it matches
several instructions, such as "str r(0123),[r11,#-nn]" and
"str r(0123),[sp,#nn]", but "push {r11}" isn't handled.
These instruction matching code in arm_skip_prologue, which can be regarded
as leftover of development for many years, should be merged to
arm_analyze_prologue and use arm_analyze_prologue in arm_skip_prologue.
Here is the something like the history of arm_{skip,scan,analyze}_prologue.
Around 2002, there are arm_skip_prologue and arm_scan_prologue, but code are
duplicated to some extent. When match an instruction, both functions should
be modified, for example in Michael Snyder's patch

expressed the willingness to merge both into one. Daniel added code call
thumb_analyze_prologue in arm_skip_prologue in 2006, but didn't handle its
counterpart arm_analyze_prologue, which is added in 2010
<https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2010-03/msg00820.html>
however, the instructions matching at the bottom of arm_skip_prologue wasn't
cleaned up. This patch is to merge them into arm_analyze_prologue.

Currently "symtabs" in gdb are stored as a single linked list of
struct symtab that contains both symbol symtabs (the blockvectors)
and file symtabs (the linetables).
This has led to confusion, bugs, and performance issues.
This patch is conceptually very simple: split struct symtab into
two pieces: one part containing things common across the entire
compilation unit, and one part containing things specific to each
source file.
Example.
For the case of a program built out of these files:

foo1.h
foo2.h
bar.c
foo1.h
bar.h
Today we have a single list of struct symtabs:
objfile -> foo.c -> foo1.h -> foo2.h -> bar.c -> foo1.h -> bar.h -> NULL
where "->" means the "next" pointer in struct symtab.
With this patch, that turns into:

where "foo.c(cu)" and "bar.c(cu)" are struct compunit_symtab objects,

So now, for example, when we want to iterate over all blockvectors
we can now just iterate over the compunit_symtab list.
Plus a lot of the data that was either unused or replicated for each
symtab in a compilation unit now lives in struct compunit_symtab.
E.g., the objfile pointer, the producer string, etc.
I thought of moving "language" out of struct symtab but there is
logic to try to compute the language based on previously seen files,
and I think that's best left as is for now.
With my standard monster benchmark with -readnow (which I can't actually
do, but based on my calculations), whereas today the list requires
77MB to store all the struct symtabs, it now only requires 37MB.
A modest space savings given the gigabytes needed for all the debug info,
etc. Still, it's nice. Plus, whereas today we create a copy of dirname
for each source file symtab in a compilation unit, we now only create one
for the compunit.
So this patch is basically just a data structure reorg,
I don't expect significant performance improvements from it.
Notes:
1) A followup patch can do a similar split for struct partial_symtab.
I have left that until after I get the changes I want in to
better utilize .gdb_index (it may affect how we do partial syms).
2) Another followup patch *could* rename struct symtab.
The term "symtab" is ambiguous and has been a source of confusion.
In this patch I'm leaving it alone, calling it the "historical" name
of "filetabs", which is what they are now: just the file-name + line-table.

extract_arm_insn function needs to read instructions in
gdbarch_byte_order_for_code byte order, because in case armv7b,
even data is big endian, instructions are still little endian.
Currently function uses gdbarch_byte_order which would be
big endian in armv7b case.
Because of this issue pretty much all gdb.reverse/ tests are
failing with 'Process record does not support instruction' message.
Fix is to change gdbarch_byte_order to gdbarch_byte_order_for_code,
when passed to extract_unsigned_integer that reads instruction.

When computing the address related to str.adb:4, GDB correctly
resolves it to 0x0800001e first, but then considers the next
3 instructions as being part of the prologue because it thinks
they are part of stack-protector code. As a result, instead
of inserting the breakpoint at line 4, it skips those instruction
and consequently the rest of the instructions until the start
of the next line, which his line 7.
The stack-protector code is expected to start like this...

.word __stack_chk_guard
... but the implementation actually accepts a sequence where
the ldr location points to an address for which there is no symbol.
It only aborts if the address points to a symbol which is not
__stack_chk_guard.
Since the __stack_chk_guard symbol is always expected to exist
when used (it lives in .dynsym), this patch fixes the issue by
requiring that the ldr gets the address of the __stack_chk_guard
symbol. If the address could not be resolved, then it rejects
the sequence as being stack-protector code.

This patch fixes the bug in my patch skipping stack protector
https://www.sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2010-12/msg00110.html
In my skipping stack protector patch, I misunderstood the constant vs.
immediate on instruction encodings, and treated immediate as constant
by mistake. The instruction 'ldr Rd, [PC, #immed]' loads the
address of __stack_chk_guard to Rd, and #immed is an offset from PC.
We should get the __stack_chk_guard from *(pc + #immed).
As a result of this mistake, arm_analyze_load_stack_chk_guard returns
the wrong address of __stack_chk_guard, and the symbol
__stack_chk_guard can't be found. However, we continue to match the
following instructions when symbol isn't found, so the code still
works. In other words, the code just matches the instruction pattern
without checking __stack_chk_guard symbol correctly.
Joel's patch <https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2014-10/msg00605.html>
makes the heuristics stricter that we stop matching instructions if
symbol __stack_chk_guard isn't found. Then the bug is exposed. This
patch is to correct the load address computation for ldr instruction,

When running GDB's reverse debugging testsuite against a few ARM
multilibs, i noticed failures in the machinestate* testcases.
Further investigation showed that push and pop instruction encodings
A1 and A2 were not being handled properly, thus we missed saving
important contents from registers and memory. When going backwards,
such contents were not restored and thus we ended up with a corrupted
state that did not correspond to the real values we had at a
particular point in time.
Attached is a patch that fixes around 36 failures for both
gdb.reverse/machinestate.exp and
gdb.reverse/machinestate-precsave.exp testcases, making them fully
pass. This is for both armv7 and armv4. I still see failures for
armv4 thumb though, so it needs a bit more investigation.
I see no regressions due to this patch for armv7, armv7 thumb, armv4
and armv4 thumb.

This patch fixes a typo in the bit mask I've made in my previous code
refactor. If PC is in the register list, the bit 8 is one, so bit
mask 0xff00 should be used. Current condition is a constant false.

In the test, jumper calls func, and programs returns from func to
jumper's epilogue, IOW, the branch instruction is the last instruction
of jumper's function body.

When the inferior returns from func back to jumper, it is expected
that an expression of a software watchpoint becomes out-of-scope.
GDB validates the expression by checking the corresponding frame,
but this check is guarded by gdbarch_in_function_epilogue_p. See
breakpoint.c:watchpoint_check.
It doesn't work in this case, because program returns from func's
epilogue back to jumper's epilogue [2], GDB thinks the program is
still within the epilogue, but in fact it goes to a different one.
When PC points at [2], the sp-restore instruction is to be
executed, so the stack frame isn't destroyed yet and we can still
use the frame mechanism reliably.
Note that when PC points to the first instruction of restoring SP,
it is part of epilogue, but we still return zero. When goes to
the next instruction, the backward scan will still match the
epilogue sequence correctly. The reason for doing this is to
handle the "return-to-epilogue" case.
What this patch does is to restrict the epilogue matching that let
GDB think the first SP restore instruction isn't part of the epilogue,
and fall back to use frame mechanism. We set 'found_stack_adjust'
zero before backward scan, and we've done this for arm mode
counterpart (arm_in_function_epilogue_p) too.
The patch is tested in arm-none-eabi and arm-none-linux-gnueabi with
various multilibs. OK to apply?

The hard-VFP ABI was supported by GDB overal, done by this patch
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2009-07/msg00686.html but
"vectors and complex types are not currently supported", mentioned in
the patch. As a result, these tests fail.
This patch is to support _Complex types in hard-VFP abi. As specified
in "7.1.1, Procedure Call Standard for the ARM Arch", the layout of
_Complex types is a struct, which is identical to the layout on amd64,
so I copy Mark's comments to amd64 support.
Regression tested on arm-none-eabi target. OK to apply?

As we can see, GDB analyzes the prologue and skip the prologue to the last
instruction but one. The breakpoint is set within the epilogue, and GDB
skips too many instruction for prologue. This patch teaches GDB to stop
prologue analysis when goes into the epilogue. With this patch applied,
GDB is able to unwind correctly,

This is a refactor patch, that moves matching instructions adjusting
SP into a new function, thumb_instruction_restores_sp. The second
call to thumb_instruction_restores_sp in thumb_in_function_epilogue_p
is a little different from the original. The original code matches
'POP <registers> without PC', but thumb_in_function_epilogue_p matches
'POP <registers> (with and without PC)'. However, GDB found one
instruction about return and is scanning the previous instruction,
which should be an instruction about return too, so the code change
doesn't affect the functionality.

Currently, GDB matches both add/sub sp, #imm in prologue and epilogue,
which is not very precise. On the instruction level, the immediate
number in both instruction can't be negative, so 'sub sp, #imm' only
appears in prologue while 'add sp, #imm' only appears in epilogue.
Note that on assembly level, we can write 'add sp, -8', but gas will
translate to 'sub sp, 8' instruction.
This patch is to only match 'sub sp, #imm' in prologue and match
'add sp, #immm' in epilogue. It paves the way for the following
patch.

In target arm-none-eabi, prologue unwinder is used for trampoline
'bx reg'. However, in target arm-linux, exidx unwinder is selected for
trampoline at first, which is not expected. The main function and the
trampoline is,

Trampolines 'bx r2' and 'bx r4' doesn't belong to main, but the exidx
for main is still selected form them because there is no end address
of each exidx entry.
Instead of teaching exidx unwinder ignore this trampoline (which looks
complicated and error prone), I decide to let stub unwinder to handle
trampoline, because stub undwinder is installed before exidx unwinder,
and this trampoline can be regarded as a stub too.
This patch is to add the code to match 'bx reg' trampoline in the
sniffer of stub unwinder.

After this patch

GCC, a new trampoline is generated but GDB doesn't recognize it. This
patch is to teach GDB to understand this trampoline. See details

Prologue analysis for ldr.w and ldrd instruction obtains offset from
first two bytes that contains opcode of instruction. It should obtain
offset from next two bytes that actually contain operands.
* arm-tdep.c (thumb_analyze_prologue): Fix offset calculation for
ldr.w and ldrd instructions.
