2021-01-01Update copyright year range in all GDB filesJoel Brobecker1-1/+1
This commits the result of running gdb/copyright.py as per our Start of New Year procedure... gdb/ChangeLog Update copyright year range in copyright header of all GDB files.
2020-12-11Handle CPU offset for RavenscarTom Tromey1-2/+20
The Ravenscar support assumes that the thread ID is the same as the CPU ID that appears in the Ada task structure. However, on some systems, gdbserver will report thread IDs that are off by some constant. This can happen, e.g., with qemu in a scenario where there is an additional (unreported) CPU in the emulation. The Ada Ravenscar runtimes have been modified to store this offset in a global variable. This patch changes gdb to read this variable, when it exists, and apply the offset to the base CPU ID. This fixes some crashes that otherwise occur. 2020-12-11 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ada-tasks.c (struct ada_tasks_pspace_data) <cpu_id_offset>: New field. (ada_get_tcb_types_info): Look for __gnat_gdb_cpu_first_id. (read_atcb): Use cpu_id_offset.
2020-11-02gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issuesSimon Marchi1-59/+59
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example, there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch. So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully). One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit" anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you already need a somewhat efficient way to do this. Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke. It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it). Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't really make archeology more difficult. The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy). gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-tdep.c: Fix 2020-09-14Apply 'const' in more placesTom Tromey1-2/+2
Many global arrays in gdb could be marked "const" but are not. This patch changes some of them. (There may be other arrays that could benefit from this treatment. I only examined arrays of strings.) This lets the linker move some symbols to the readonly data section. 2020-05-14gdb: remove TYPE_CODE macroSimon Marchi1-5/+5
Remove TYPE_CODE, changing all the call sites to use type::code directly. This is quite a big diff, but this was mostly done using sed and coccinelle. A few call sites were done by hand. gdb/ChangeLog: * gdbtypes.h (TYPE_CODE): Remove. Change all call sites to use type::code instead.
2020-05-08Remove ALL_PSPACESTom Tromey1-3/+1
This removes the ALL_PSPACES macro. In this case it seemed cleanest to change how program spaces are stored -- instead of using a linked list, they are now stored in a std::vector. gdb/ChangeLog 2020-05-08 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * symtab.c (set_symbol_cache_size) (maintenance_print_symbol_cache, maintenance_flush_symbol_cache) (maintenance_print_symbol_cache_statistics): Update. * symmisc.c (print_symbol_bcache_statistics) (print_objfile_statistics, maintenance_print_objfiles) (maintenance_info_symtabs, maintenance_check_symtabs) (maintenance_expand_symtabs, maintenance_info_line_tables): Update. * symfile-debug.c (set_debug_symfile): Update. * source.c (forget_cached_source_info): Update. * python/python.c (gdbpy_progspaces): Update. * psymtab.c (maintenance_info_psymtabs): Update. * probe.c (parse_probes): Update. * linespec.c (iterate_over_all_matching_symtabs) (collect_symtabs_from_filename, search_minsyms_for_name): Update. * guile/scm-progspace.c (gdbscm_progspaces): Update. * exec.c (exec_target::close): Update. * ada-tasks.c (ada_tasks_new_objfile_observer): Update. * breakpoint.c (print_one_breakpoint_location) (create_longjmp_master_breakpoint) (create_std_terminate_master_breakpoint): Update. * progspace.c (program_spaces): Now a std::vector. (print_program_space, update_address_spaces): Update. * progspace.h (program_spaces): Change type. (ALL_PSPACES): Remove. (number_of_program_spaces): Don't declare. (struct program_space) <next>: Remove.
2020-03-20Avoid stringop-truncation errorsTom Tromey1-1/+2
I configured with -fsanitize=address and built gdb. linux-tdep.c and ada-tasks.c failed to build due to some stringop-truncation errors, e.g.: In function ‘char* strncpy(char*, const char*, size_t)’, inlined from ‘int linux_fill_prpsinfo(elf_internal_linux_prpsinfo*)’ at ../../binutils-gdb/gdb/linux-tdep.c:1742:11, inlined from ‘char* linux_make_corefile_notes(gdbarch*, bfd*, int*)’ at ../../binutils-gdb/gdb/linux-tdep.c:1878:27: /usr/include/bits/string_fortified.h:106:34: error: ‘char* __builtin_strncpy(char*, const char*, long unsigned int)’ specified bound 81 equals destination size [-Werror=stringop-truncation] This patch fixes the problem by using "sizeof - 1" in the call to strndup, as recommended in the GCC manual. This doesn't make a difference here because the next line, in all cases, sets the final element to '\0' anyway. gdb/ChangeLog 2020-03-20 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ada-tasks.c (read_atcb): Use smaller length in strncpy call. * linux-tdep.c (linux_fill_prpsinfo): Use smaller length in strncpy call.
2020-01-13gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functionsSimon Marchi1-1/+2
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it warns for every _initialize function, for example: CXX dcache.o /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’: /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations] _initialize_dcache (void) ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations, which were removed by this commit: commit 481695ed5f6e0a8a9c9c50bfac1cdd2b3151e6c9 Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org> Date: Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700 Remove unnecessary function prototypes. I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy to use it. gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-fbsd-nat.c 2020-01-10Multi-target supportPedro Alves1-2/+2
This commit adds multi-target support to GDB. What this means is that with this commit, GDB can now be connected to different targets at the same time. E.g., you can debug a live native process and a core dump at the same time, connect to multiple gdbservers, etc. Actually, the word "target" is overloaded in gdb. We already have a target stack, with pushes several target_ops instances on top of one another. We also have "info target" already, which means something completely different to what this patch does. So from here on, I'll be using the "target connections" term, to mean an open process_stratum target, pushed on a target stack. This patch makes gdb have multiple target stacks, and multiple process_stratum targets open simultaneously. The user-visible changes / commands will also use this terminology, but of course it's all open to debate. User-interface-wise, not that much changes. The main difference is that each inferior may have its own target connection. A target connection (e.g., a target extended-remote connection) may support debugging multiple processes, just as before. Say you're debugging against gdbserver in extended-remote mode, and you do "add-inferior" to prepare to spawn a new process, like: (gdb) target extended-remote :9999 ... (gdb) start ... (gdb) add-inferior Added inferior 2 (gdb) inferior 2 [Switching to inferior 2 [<null>] (<noexec>)] (gdb) file a.out ... (gdb) start ... At this point, you have two inferiors connected to the same gdbserver. With this commit, GDB will maintain a target stack per inferior, instead of a global target stack. To preserve the behavior above, by default, "add-inferior" makes the new inferior inherit a copy of the target stack of the current inferior. Same across a fork - the child inherits a copy of the target stack of the parent. While the target stacks are copied, the targets themselves are not. Instead, target_ops is made a refcounted_object, which means that target_ops instances are refcounted, which each inferior counting for a reference. What if you want to create an inferior and connect it to some _other_ target? For that, this commit introduces a new "add-inferior -no-connection" option that makes the new inferior not share the current inferior's target. So you could do: (gdb) target extended-remote :9999 Remote debugging using :9999 ... (gdb) add-inferior -no-connection [New inferior 2] Added inferior 2 (gdb) inferior 2 [Switching to inferior 2 [<null>] (<noexec>)] (gdb) info inferiors Num Description Executable 1 process 18401 target:/home/pedro/tmp/main * 2 <null> (gdb) tar extended-remote :10000 Remote debugging using :10000 ... (gdb) info inferiors Num Description Executable 1 process 18401 target:/home/pedro/tmp/main * 2 process 18450 target:/home/pedro/tmp/main (gdb) A following patch will extended "info inferiors" to include a column indicating which connection an inferior is bound to, along with a couple other UI tweaks. Other than that, debugging is the same as before. Users interact with inferiors and threads as before. The only difference is that inferiors may be bound to processes running in different machines. That's pretty much all there is to it in terms of noticeable UI changes. On to implementation. Since we can be connected to different systems at the same time, a ptid_t is no longer a unique identifier. Instead a thread can be identified by a pair of ptid_t and 'process_stratum_target *', the later being the instance of the process_stratum target that owns the process/thread. Note that process_stratum_target inherits from target_ops, and all process_stratum targets inherit from process_stratum_target. In earlier patches, many places in gdb were converted to refer to threads by thread_info pointer instead of ptid_t, but there are still places in gdb where we start with a pid/tid and need to find the corresponding inferior or thread_info objects. So you'll see in the patch many places adding a process_stratum_target parameter to functions that used to take only a ptid_t. Since each inferior has its own target stack now, we can always find the process_stratum target for an inferior. That is done via a inf->process_target() convenience method. Since each inferior has its own target stack, we need to handle the "beneath" calls when servicing target calls. The solution I settled with is just to make sure to switch the current inferior to the inferior you want before making a target call. Not relying on global context is just not feasible in current GDB. Fortunately, there aren't that many places that need to do that, because generally most code that calls target methods already has the current context pointing to the right inferior/thread. Note, to emphasize -- there's no method to "switch to this target stack". Instead, you switch the current inferior, and that implicitly switches the target stack. In some spots, we need to iterate over all inferiors so that we reach all target stacks. Native targets are still singletons. There's always only a single instance of such targets. Remote targets however, we'll have one instance per remote connection. The exec target is still a singleton. There's only one instance. I did not see the point of instanciating more than one exec_target object. After vfork, we need to make sure to push the exec target on the new inferior. See exec_on_vfork. For type safety, functions that need a {target, ptid} pair to identify a thread, take a process_stratum_target pointer for target parameter instead of target_ops *. Some shared code in gdb/nat/ also need to gain a target pointer parameter. This poses an issue, since gdbserver doesn't have process_stratum_target, only target_ops. To fix this, this commit renames gdbserver's target_ops to process_stratum_target. I think this makes sense. There's no concept of target stack in gdbserver, and gdbserver's target_ops really implements a process_stratum-like target. The thread and inferior iterator functions also gain process_stratum_target parameters. These are used to be able to iterate over threads and inferiors of a given target. Following usual conventions, if the target pointer is null, then we iterate over threads and inferiors of all targets. I tried converting "add-inferior" to the gdb::option framework, as a preparatory patch, but that stumbled on the fact that gdb::option does not support file options yet, for "add-inferior -exec". I have a WIP patchset that adds that, but it's not a trivial patch, mainly due to need to integrate readline's filename completion, so I deferred that to some other time. In infrun.c/infcmd.c, the main change is that we need to poll events out of all targets. See do_target_wait. Right after collecting an event, we switch the current inferior to an inferior bound to the target that reported the event, so that target methods can be used while handling the event. This makes most of the code transparent to multi-targets. See fetch_inferior_event. infrun.c:stop_all_threads is interesting -- in this function we need to stop all threads of all targets. What the function does is send an asynchronous stop request to all threads, and then synchronously waits for events, with target_wait, rinse repeat, until all it finds are stopped threads. Now that we have multiple targets, it's not efficient to synchronously block in target_wait waiting for events out of one target. Instead, we implement a mini event loop, with interruptible_select, select'ing on one file descriptor per target. For this to work, we need to be able to ask the target for a waitable file descriptor. Such file descriptors already exist, they are the descriptors registered in the main event loop with add_file_handler, inside the target_async implementations. This commit adds a new target_async_wait_fd target method that just returns the file descriptor in question. See wait_one / stop_all_threads in infrun.c. The 'threads_executing' global is made a per-target variable. Since it is only relevant to process_stratum_target targets, this is where it is put, instead of in target_ops. You'll notice that remote.c includes some FIXME notes. These refer to the fact that the global arrays that hold data for the remote packets supported are still globals. For example, if we connect to two different servers/stubs, then each might support different remote protocol features. They might even be different architectures, like e.g., one ARM baremetal stub, and a x86 gdbserver, to debug a host/controller scenario as a single program. That isn't going to work correctly today, because of said globals. I'm leaving fixing that for another pass, since it does not appear to be trivial, and I'd rather land the base work first. It's already useful to be able to debug multiple instances of the same server (e.g., a distributed cluster, where you have full control over the servers installed), so I think as is it's already reasonable incremental progress. Current limitations: - You can only resume more that one target at the same time if all targets support asynchronous debugging, and support non-stop mode. It should be possible to support mixed all-stop + non-stop backends, but that is left for another time. This means that currently in order to do multi-target with gdbserver you need to issue "maint set target-non-stop on". I would like to make that mode be the default, but we're not there yet. Note that I'm talking about how the target backend works, only. User-visible all-stop mode works just fine. - As explained above, connecting to different remote servers at the same time is likely to produce bad results if they don't support the exact set of RSP features. 2019-10-01Introduce metadata styleTom Tromey1-4/+10
This introduces a new "metadata" style and changes many places in gdb to use it. The idea here is to let the user distinguish gdb output from output that (conceptually at least) comes directly from the inferior. The newly-styled category includes text that gdb traditionally surrounds in "<...>", like "<unavailable>". I only added a single test for this. In many cases this output is difficult to test. Also, while developing this errors in the implementation of the new printf formats showed up as regressions. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-10-01 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * p-lang.c (pascal_printstr): Use metadata style. * value.c (show_convenience): Use metadata style. * valprint.c (valprint_check_validity, val_print_optimized_out) (val_print_not_saved, val_print_unavailable) (val_print_invalid_address, generic_val_print, val_print) (value_check_printable, val_print_array_elements): Use metadata style. * ui-out.h (class ui_out) <field_fmt>: New overload. <do_field_fmt>: Add style parameter. * ui-out.c (ui_out::field_fmt): New overload. * typeprint.c (type_print_unknown_return_type) (val_print_not_allocated, val_print_not_associated): Use metadata style. * tui/tui-out.h (class tui_ui_out) <do_field_fmt>: Add style parameter. * tui/tui-out.c (tui_ui_out::do_field_fmt): Update. * tracepoint.c (tvariables_info_1): Use metadata style. * stack.c (print_frame_arg, print_frame_info, print_frame) (info_frame_command_core): Use metadata style. * skip.c (info_skip_command): Use metadata style. * rust-lang.c (rust_print_enum): Use metadata style. * python/py-prettyprint.c (print_stack_unless_memory_error): Use metadata style. * python/py-framefilter.c (py_print_single_arg): Use metadata style. * printcmd.c (do_one_display, print_variable_and_value): Use metadata style. * p-valprint.c (pascal_val_print) (pascal_object_print_value_fields): Use metadata style. * p-typeprint.c (pascal_type_print_base): Use metadata style. * mi/mi-out.h (class mi_ui_out) <do_field_fmt>: Add style parameter. * mi/mi-out.c (mi_ui_out::do_field_fmt): Update. * m2-valprint.c (m2_print_long_set): Use metadata style. * m2-typeprint.c (m2_print_type): Use metadata style. * infcmd.c (print_return_value_1): Use metadata style. * gnu-v3-abi.c (print_one_vtable): Use metadata style. * f-valprint.c (info_common_command_for_block): Use metadata style. * f-typeprint.c (f_type_print_base): Use metadata style. * expprint.c (print_subexp_standard): Use metadata style. * cp-valprint.c (cp_print_value_fields): Use metadata style. * cli/cli-style.h (class cli_style_option): Add constructor. 2019-09-17(Ada) do not print Ada task names in quotes in "info tasks" outputJoel Brobecker1-3/+3
A recent change enhanced a couple of notifications about Ada tasks to include the task's name in addition to the task's number. That change also modified the output of the "info tasks" when printing the detailed information of one given task. I believe this change was unintentionally left over from the initial version after it was decided that quoting the task's name should not be done. This patch therefore undoes this part of the patch. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-tasks.c (info_task): Remove quoting of the task's name. Tested on x86_64-linux, with both the official testsuite as well as AdaCore's testsuite.
2019-09-12Output the Ada task name in more messages.Philippe Waroquiers1-12/+54
With this patch, we e.g. get: [Switching to task 2 "task_list(1)"] [Current task is 2 "task_list(1)"] instead of [Switching to task 2] [Current task is 2] The logic to produce the taskno optionally followed by the task name has been factorized in the task_to_str function. Task names are output between double quotes in the new messages, similarly to what GDB does for thread names. However, no quotes are put around task names in 'info tasks' Name column. This was discussed with Tom, that preferred no quotes there, while I was more in favour of visual consistency. I discussed with a few more users, which led to (exactly) 50% preferring quotes and 50% preferring no quotes :). To arrive to the decision to remove the quotes, the following "killing args" were used: * To have quotes or to not have quotes, that is the question; yes but not *THE* question :). * If there is not a clear majority that prefers quotes, better to not disturb the existing user basis for a (somewhat) irrelevant aspect. * The opinion of the reviewer has more weight. So, compared to the previous version, this version remotes the quotes in 'info tasks'. It improves the alignement of 'info tasks' output. With this patch, we get: (gdb) info task ID TID P-ID Pri State Name * 1 555555759030 48 Runnable main_task 2 555555759e30 1 48 Selective Wait mit (gdb) instead of (gdb) info task ID TID P-ID Pri State Name * 1 555555759030 48 Runnable main_task 2 555555759e30 1 48 Selective Wait mit (gdb) (e.g. the first one properly shows parent and priority under the correct header). This is version 4 of the 'task name' patch. Compared to version 3, the changes are: output task names between quotes but not in 'info tasks' gdb/ChangeLog 2019-09-12 Philippe Waroquiers <philippe.waroquiers@skynet.be> * NEWS: Announce that Ada task names are now shown at more places, and between quotes (except in info task output). * gdb/ada-tasks.c (task_to_str): New function. 2019-08-07Make first and last lines of 'command help documentation' consistent.Philippe Waroquiers1-2/+2
With this patch, the help docs now respect 2 invariants: * The first line of a command help is terminated by a '.' character. * The last character of a command help is not a newline character. Note that the changes for the last invariant were done by Tom, as part of : [PATCH] Remove trailing newlines from help text https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-06/msg00050.html but some occurrences have been re-introduced since then. Some help docs had to be rephrased/restructured to respect the above invariants. Before this patch, print_doc_line was printing the first line of a command help documentation, but stopping at the first '.' or ',' character. This was giving inconsistent results : * The first line of command helps was sometimes '.' terminated, sometimes not. * The first line of command helps was not always designed to be readable/understandable/unambiguous when stopping at the first '.' or ',' character. This e.g. created the following inconsistencies/problems: < catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions < catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions < catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names < down-silently -- Same as the `down' command while the new help is: > catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions, when raised. > catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions, when handled. > catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names, groups and/or numbers. > down-silently -- Same as the `down' command, but does not print anything. Also, the command help doc should not be terminated by a newline character, but this was not respected by all commands. The cli-option -OPT framework re-introduced some occurences. So, the -OPT build help framework was changed to not output newlines at the end of %OPTIONS% replacement. This patch changes the help documentations to ensure the 2 invariants given above. It implied to slightly rephrase or restructure some help docs. Based on the above invariants, print_doc_line (called by 'apropos' and 'help' commands to print the first line of a command help) now outputs the full first line of a command help. This all results in a lot of small changes in the produced help docs. There are less code changes than changes in the help docs, as a lot of docs are produced by some code (e.g. the remote packet usage settings). gdb/ChangeLog 2019-08-07 Philippe Waroquiers <philippe.waroquiers@skynet.be> * cli/cli-decode.h (print_doc_line): Add for_value_prefix argument. * cli/cli-decode.c (print_doc_line): Likewise. 2019-02-19Minor Ada task cleanupsTom Tromey1-28/+27
While working on the Ada task code, I noticed a few things that could be cleaned up: * task_list_valid_p was not set in all cases in ada_build_task_list. This causes many needless re-fetches of the task list. * task_list_valid_p can be bool, and various functions can also return bool. * Nothing checks the return value of read_known_tasks, so it can be changed to return void. * The call to ada_build_task_list in ravenscar_thread_target::update_thread_list is redundant, because this is the first thing done by iterate_over_live_ada_tasks. Tested using the internal AdaCore test suite against a ravenscar target. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-02-19 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ravenscar-thread.c (ravenscar_thread_target::update_thread_list): Don't call ada_build_task_list. * ada-lang.h (ada_build_task_list): Don't declare. * ada-tasks.c (struct ada_tasks_inferior_data) <task_list_valid_p>: Now bool. 2019-01-01Update copyright year range in all GDB files.Joel Brobecker1-1/+1
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header was sent to gcc-patches first. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
2018-11-07(Ada/tasking) fix array or string index out of range warningJoel Brobecker1-6/+6
A recent change in the compiler highlighted a small weakness in the function reading the contents of the Ada Task Control Block (ATCB -- the data that allows us to inspect Ada tasks). As a result, anytime we read it, we started getting some warnings. For instance, using the gdb.ada/tasks.exp testcase... $ gnatmake -g foo.adb $ gdb foo (gdb) b foo.adb:60 Breakpoint 1 at 0x403e07: file foo.adb, line 60. (gdb) run [...] Thread 1 "foo" hit Breakpoint 1, foo () at foo.adb:60 60 for J in Task_List'Range loop -- STOP_HERE ... we can see that the "info tasks" command produces some warnings, followed by the correct output. (gdb) info tasks !! -> warning: array or string index out of range !! -> warning: array or string index out of range !! -> warning: array or string index out of range !! -> warning: array or string index out of range ID TID P-ID Pri State Name * 1 654050 48 Runnable main_task 2 654ef0 1 48 Accept or Select Term task_list(1) 3 658680 1 48 Accept or Select Term task_list(2) 4 65be10 1 48 Accept or Select Term task_list(3) The problem comes from the fact that read_atcb, the function responsible for loading the contents of the ATCB, blindly tries to read some data which is only relevant when a task is waiting for another task on an entry call. A comment in that code's section gives a hint as to how the information is meant to be decoded: /* Let My_ATCB be the Ada task control block of a task calling the entry of another task; then the Task_Id of the called task is in My_ATCB.Entry_Calls (My_ATCB.ATC_Nesting_Level).Called_Task. */ What the comment shows is that, to get the Id of the task being called, one has to go through the entry calls field, which is an array pointer. Up to now, we were lucky that, for tasks that are _not_ waiting on an entry call, its ATCB atc_nesting_level used to be set to 1, and so we were able to silently read some irrelevant data. But a recent change now causes this field to be zero instead, and this triggers the warning, since we are now trying to read outside of the array's range (arrays in Ada often start at index 1, as is the case here). We avoid this issue by simply only reading that data when the data is actually known to be relevant (state == Entry_Caller_Sleep). This, in turn, allows us to simplify a bit the use of the task_info->state field, where we no longer need to check task the task has a state equal to Entry_Caller_Sleep before using this field. Indeed, with this new approach, we now know that, unless task_info->state == Entry_Caller_Sleep, the state is now guaranteed to be zero. In other words, we no longer set task_info->called_task to some random value, forcing to check the task's state first as a way to verify that the data is not random. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-lang.c (read_atcb): Only set task_info->called_task if task_info->state == Entry_Caller_Sleep. (print_ada_task_info): Do not check task_info->state before checking task_info->called_task. (info_task): Likewise.
2018-11-07ada-tasks.c::read_atcb: start from a cleared ada_task_info resultJoel Brobecker1-10/+6
The purpose of this patch is not to fix a bug per se, but rather to robustify this function to make sure it never returns a struct ada_task_info where some of the fields are left uninitialized. Reading the current implementation, it attempts to methodically set them all one by one: but it's not excluded that a future change might miss something. A memset is cheap and make sure that this function returns repeatable results. This in turns allows us to remove some assignments which have become redundant. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-tasks.c (read_atcb): Clear task_info before computing the value of each of its fields.

2018-06-21Use thread_info and inferior pointers more throughoutPedro Alves1-10/+11
This is more preparation bits for multi-target support. In a multi-target scenario, we need to address the case of different processes/threads running on different targets that happen to have the same PID/PTID. E.g., we can have both process 123 in target 1, and process 123 in target 2, while they're in reality different processes running on different machines. Or maybe we've loaded multiple instances of the same core file. Etc. To address this, in my WIP multi-target branch, threads and processes are uniquely identified by the (process_stratum target_ops *, ptid_t) and (process_stratum target_ops *, pid) tuples respectively. I.e., each process_stratum instance has its own thread/process number space. As you can imagine, that requires passing around target_ops * pointers in a number of functions where we're currently passing only a ptid_t or an int. E.g., when we look up a thread_info object by ptid_t in find_thread_ptid, the ptid_t alone isn't sufficient. In many cases though, we already have the thread_info or inferior pointer handy, but we "lose" it somewhere along the call stack, only to look it up again by ptid_t/pid. Since thread_info or inferior objects know their parent target, if we pass around thread_info or inferior pointers when possible, we avoid having to add extra target_ops parameters to many functions, and also, we eliminate a number of by ptid_t/int lookups. So that's what this patch does. In a bit more detail: - Changes a number of functions and methods to take a thread_info or inferior pointer instead of a ptid_t or int parameter. - Changes a number of structure fields from ptid_t/int to inferior or thread_info pointers. - Uses the inferior_thread() function whenever possible instead of inferior_ptid. - Uses thread_info pointers directly when possible instead of the is_running/is_stopped etc. routines that require a lookup. - A number of functions are eliminated along the way, such as: int valid_gdb_inferior_id (int num); int pid_to_gdb_inferior_id (int pid); int gdb_inferior_id_to_pid (int num); int in_inferior_list (int pid); - A few structures and places hold a thread_info pointer across inferior execution, so now they take a strong reference to the (refcounted) thread_info object to avoid the thread_info pointer getting stale. This is done in enable_thread_stack_temporaries and in the infcall.c code. - Related, there's a spot in infcall.c where using a RAII object to handle the refcount would be handy, so a gdb::ref_ptr specialization for thread_info is added (thread_info_ref, in gdbthread.h), along with a gdb_ref_ptr policy that works for all refcounted_object types (in common/refcounted-object.h). gdb/ChangeLog: 2018-06-21 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * ada-lang.h (ada_get_task_number): Take a thread_info pointer instead of a ptid_t. 2018-03-19Convert observers to C++Tom Tromey1-3/+3
This converts observers from using a special source-generating script to be plain C++. This version of the patch takes advantage of C++11 by using std::function and variadic templates; incorporates Pedro's patches; and renames the header file to "observable.h" (this change eliminates the need for a clean rebuild). Note that Pedro's patches used a template lambda in tui-hooks.c, but this failed to compile on some buildbot instances (presumably due to differing C++ versions); I replaced this with an ordinary template function. Regression tested on the buildbot. gdb/ChangeLog 2018-03-19 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * unittests/observable-selftests.c: New file. * common/observable.h: New file. * observable.h: New file. * ada-lang.c, ada-tasks.c, agent.c, aix-thread.c, annotate.c, arm-tdep.c, auto-load.c, auxv.c, break-catch-syscall.c, breakpoint.c, bsd-uthread.c, cli/cli-interp.c, cli/cli-setshow.c, corefile.c, dummy-frame.c, event-loop.c, event-top.c, exec.c, extension.c, frame.c, gdbarch.c, guile/scm-breakpoint.c, infcall.c, infcmd.c, inferior.c, inflow.c, infrun.c, jit.c, linux-tdep.c, linux-thread-db.c, m68klinux-tdep.c, mi/mi-cmd-break.c, mi/mi-interp.c, mi/mi-main.c, objfiles.c, ppc-linux-nat.c, ppc-linux-tdep.c, printcmd.c, procfs.c, python/py-breakpoint.c, python/py-finishbreakpoint.c, python/py-inferior.c, python/py-unwind.c, ravenscar-thread.c, record-btrace.c, record-full.c, record.c, regcache.c, remote.c, riscv-tdep.c, sol-thread.c, solib-aix.c, solib-spu.c, solib.c, spu-multiarch.c, spu-tdep.c, stack.c, symfile-mem.c, symfile.c, symtab.c, thread.c, top.c, tracepoint.c, tui/tui-hooks.c, tui/tui-interp.c, valops.c: Update all users. * tui/tui-hooks.c (tui_bp_created_observer) (tui_bp_deleted_observer, tui_bp_modified_observer) (tui_inferior_exit_observer, tui_before_prompt_observer) (tui_normal_stop_observer, tui_register_changed_observer): Remove. gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files
2017-12-13(Ada) Add support for task switching when debugging core filesJoel Brobecker1-29/+5
The reasons for not supporting task switching when debugging core files appear to now mostly be OBE. In particular, on GNU/Linux, the thread layer is now able to retrieve the same thread info as in the live process. So, this patch is mostly about just removing the guard that limited the use of task switching to live processes. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-tasks.c (read_atcb): Properly set task_info->ptid when !target_has_execution as well. (task_command): Remove error when !target_has_execution. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: * gdb.ada/task_switch_in_core: New testcase.
2017-11-21problem debugging ravenscar programs if runtime is strippedJoel Brobecker1-17/+22
Trying to debug a program using a stripped version of the ravenscar runtime, we can get the following error: (gdb) cont Continuing. Cannot find Ada_Task_Control_Block type. Aborting This is because the ravenscar-thread layer makes the assumption that the runtime is built the way we expect it, meaning that the Ada tasking units we rely on for Ada tasking debugging, are built with debugging information, and that this debug information has not been stripped from the runtime. When this assumption is not true, resuming such a program can trigger the error above, which then leads GDB a little confused. For instance, we can see things like: (gdb) bt Target is executing. This patch fixes the issue by disabling the ravenscar thread layer if we detect that the runtime is missing some of the debugging info we need in order to support Ada task debugging. This is the best we can do, as the ravenscar-thread layer actually depends on the ada-tasks layer to implement thread debugging. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-lang.h (ada_get_tcb_types_info): Add declaration. * ada-tasks.c (ada_get_tcb_types_info): Renames get_tcb_types_info. Make non-static. Change return type to char *. Adjust code accordingly. Rewrite the function's documentation. (read_atcb): Adjust call to get_tcb_types_info accordingly. * ravenscar-thread.c (ravenscar_inferior_created): Check that we have enough debugging information in the runtime to support Ada task debugging before we enable the ravenscar-thread layer.
2017-11-21Add multiple-CPU support in ravenscar-thread.cJoel Brobecker1-0/+24
This patch reworks the ravenscar-thread layer to remove the assumption that the target only has 1 CPU. In particular, when connected to a QEMU target over the remote protocol, QEMU reports each CPU as one thread. This patch adapts the ravenscar-thread layer to this, and adds a large comment explaining the general design of this unit. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-lang.h (ada_get_task_info_from_ptid): Add declaration. * ada-tasks.c (ada_get_task_info_from_ptid): New function. * ravenscar-thread.c: Add into comment. (base_magic_null_ptid): Delete. (base_ptid): Change documentation. (ravenscar_active_task): Renames ravenscar_running_thread. All callers updated throughout. Adjust implementation to handle this new parameter. (ravenscar_fetch_registers): Small adjustment to use is_ravenscar_task and ravenscar_task_is_currently_active in order to decide whether to use the target beneath or this module's arch_ops. (ravenscar_store_registers, ravenscar_prepare_to_store): Likewise. (ravenscar_stopped_by_sw_breakpoint): Use get_base_thread_from_ravenscar_task to get the underlying thread, rather than using base_ptid. (ravenscar_stopped_by_hw_breakpoint, ravenscar_stopped_by_watchpoint) (ravenscar_stopped_data_address, ravenscar_core_of_thread): Likewise. (ravenscar_inferior_created): Do not set base_magic_null_ptid.
2017-11-21Provide the "Base CPU" in output of "info task" (if set by runtime).Joel Brobecker1-0/+10
At the user level, this patch enhances the debugger to print the ID of the base CPU a task is running on: (gdb) info task 3 Ada Task: 0x13268 Name: raven1 Thread: 0x13280 LWP: 0 !!!-> Base CPU: 1 No parent Base Priority: 127 State: Runnable This new field is only printed when the base CPU is nonzero or, in other words, if the base CPU info is being provided by the runtime. For instance, on native systems, where threads/processes can "jump" from CPU to CPU, the info is not available, and the output of the command above then remains unchanged. At the internal level, the real purpose of this change is to prepare the way for ravenscar-thread to start handling SMP systems. For that, we'll need to know which CPU each task is running on... More info on that in the commit that actually adds support for it. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-lang.h (struct ada_task_info) <base_cpu>: New field. * ada-lang.c (struct atcb_fieldno) <base_cpu>: New field. (get_tcb_types_info): Set fieldnos.base_cpu. (read_atcb): Set task_info->base_cpu. (info_task): Print "Base CPU" info if set by runtime.

2017-08-03Introduce and use ui_out_emit_tableTom Tromey1-5/+1
This introduces ui_out_emit_table, similar to the other existing ui_out RAII classes, and then uses it in a number of places. This replaces some cleanups. ChangeLog 2017-08-03 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * tracepoint.c (tvariables_info_1): Use ui_out_emit_table. 2017-04-22Use ui_out_emit_tupleTom Tromey1-3/+1
This patch changes various places to use ui_out_emit_tuple, eliminating a number of cleanups. This patch only tackles "easy" cases, which are ones where the cleanups in question were block-structured and did not involve any changes other than the obvious replacement.
