2020-01-13gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functionsSimon Marchi1-1/+2
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it warns for every _initialize function, for example: CXX dcache.o /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’: /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations] _initialize_dcache (void) ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations, which were removed by this commit: commit 481695ed5f6e0a8a9c9c50bfac1cdd2b3151e6c9 Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org> Date: Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700 Remove unnecessary function prototypes. I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy to use it. gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-fbsd-nat.c gdb/ChangeLog: Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
2019-12-27Make symbol_set_names a member functionChristian Biesinger1-1/+1
This also renames it to make it clearer that this is not a cheap function (to compute_and_set_names). Also renames name to m_name to make the implementation of the renamed function more readable. Most of the places that access sym->m_name directly were also changed to call linkage_name () instead, to make it clearer which name they are accessing. gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-12-26 Christian Biesinger <cbiesinger@google.com> * ada-lang.c (ada_decode_symbol): Update. * buildsym.c (add_symbol_to_list): Update. * coffread.c (process_coff_symbol): Update. * ctfread.c (ctf_add_enum_member_cb): Update. 2019-12-16Use an accessor function for general_symbol_info::languageChristian Biesinger1-7/+6
Also renames the member variable to m_language to make code easier to read when more functions become member functions. I was originally hoping to eventually make m_language private (after a few more patches), but unfortunately then it no longer counts as a POD type, which means gdbsupport/poison.h won't let us use memset to initialize this type, which psymtabs rely on to clear padding bytes so that bcache can work properly. gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-12-15 Christian Biesinger <cbiesinger@google.com> * ada-lang.c (ada_add_block_symbols): Update. 2019-12-04Remove gdbarch_bits_big_endianTom Tromey1-4/+4
From what I can tell, set_gdbarch_bits_big_endian has never been used. That is, all architectures since its introduction have simply used the default, which is simply check the architecture's byte-endianness. Because this interferes with the scalar_storage_order code, this patch removes this gdbarch setting entirely. In some places, type_byte_order is used rather than the plain gdbarch. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-12-04 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ada-lang.c (decode_constrained_packed_array) (ada_value_assign, value_assign_to_component): Update. * dwarf2loc.c (rw_pieced_value, access_memory) (dwarf2_compile_expr_to_ax): Update. * dwarf2read.c (dwarf2_add_field): Update. * eval.c (evaluate_subexp_standard): Update. * gdbarch.c, gdbarch.h: Rebuild. * gdbarch.sh (bits_big_endian): Remove. * gdbtypes.h (union field_location): Update comment. * target-descriptions.c (make_gdb_type): Update. * valarith.c (value_bit_index): Update. * value.c (struct value) <bitpos>: Update comment. 2019-11-21Adjust byte order variable display/change if DW_AT_endianity is present.Peeter Joot1-2/+2
- Rationale: It is possible for compilers to indicate the desired byte order interpretation of scalar variables using the DWARF attribute: DW_AT_endianity A type flagged with this variable would typically use one of: DW_END_big DW_END_little which instructs the debugger what the desired byte order interpretation of the variable should be. The GCC compiler (as of V6) has a mechanism for setting the desired byte ordering of the fields within a structure or union. For, example, on a little endian target, a structure declared as: struct big { int v; short a[4]; } __attribute__( ( scalar_storage_order( "big-endian" ) ) ); could be used to ensure all the structure members have a big-endian interpretation (the compiler would automatically insert byte swap instructions before and after respective store and load instructions). - To reproduce GCC V8 is required to correctly emit DW_AT_endianity DWARF attributes in all situations when the scalar_storage_order attribute is used. A fix for (dwarf endianity instrumentation) for GCC V6-V7 can be found in the URL field of the following PR: https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=82509 - Test-case: A new test case (testsuite/gdb.base/endianity.*) is included with this patch. 2019-11-08Constify command_line_inputTom Tromey1-1/+1
This changes command_line_input to return a "const char *", which is appropriate because the memory is owned by command_line_input. Then it fixes up the users. I looked at making command_line_input transfer ownership to its caller instead, but this is complicated due to the way read_next_line is called, so I decided against it. 2019-11-05Remove la_get_string memberTom Tromey1-1/+0
The la_get_string member of struct language_defn was intended to provide a way to fetch string data from a "string" object in a language-dependent way. 2019-10-02Add $_ada_exception convenience variableTom Tromey1-230/+77
This adds the $_ada_exception convenience variable. It is set by the Ada exception catchpoints, and holds the address of the exception currently being thrown. This is useful because it allows more fine-grained filtering of exceptions than is possible using the existing "catch" syntax. This also simplifies Ada catchpoints somewhat; because the catchpoint must now carry the "kind", it's possible to remove many helper functions. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-10-02 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * NEWS: Add $_ada_exception entry. * ada-lang.c (struct ada_catchpoint): Add constructor. <m_kind>: New member. 2019-10-02Back out earlier Ada exception changeTom Tromey1-82/+25
commit 2ff0a9473 (Fix "catch exception" with dynamic linking) changed how ada-lang.c creates expressions to determine if an exception catchpoint should stop. That patch is no longer needed now that copy relocations are handled more directly. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-10-02 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ada-lang.c (ada_lookup_simple_minsyms): Remove. (create_excep_cond_exprs): Simplify exception string computation. (ada_exception_catchpoint_cond_string): Likewise.
2019-10-02Handle copy relocationsTom Tromey1-0/+9
In ELF, if a data symbol is defined in a shared library and used by the main program, it will be subject to a "copy relocation". In this scenario, the main program has a copy of the symbol in question, and a relocation that tells ld.so to copy the data from the shared library. Then the symbol in the main program is used to satisfy all references. This patch changes gdb to handle this scenario. Data symbols coming from ELF shared libraries get a special flag that indicates that the symbol's address may be subject to copy relocation. I looked briefly into handling copy relocations by looking at the actual relocations in the main program, but this seemed difficult to do with BFD. Note that no caching is done here. Perhaps this could be changed if need be; I wanted to avoid possible problems with either objfile lifetimes and changes, or conflicts with the long-term (vapor-ware) objfile splitting project. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-10-02 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * symmisc.c (dump_msymbols): Don't use MSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS. * ada-lang.c (lesseq_defined_than): Handle LOC_STATIC. * dwarf2read.c (dwarf2_per_objfile): Add can_copy parameter. 2019-10-01Use styled_string in more placesTom Tromey1-3/+5

2019-10-01Introduce metadata styleTom Tromey1-2/+3
This introduces a new "metadata" style and changes many places in gdb to use it. The idea here is to let the user distinguish gdb output from output that (conceptually at least) comes directly from the inferior. The newly-styled category includes text that gdb traditionally surrounds in "<...>", like "<unavailable>". I only added a single test for this. In many cases this output is difficult to test. Also, while developing this errors in the implementation of the new printf formats showed up as regressions. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-10-01 Tom Tromey <tom@tromey.com> * p-lang.c (pascal_printstr): Use metadata style. * value.c (show_convenience): Use metadata style. * valprint.c (valprint_check_validity, val_print_optimized_out) (val_print_not_saved, val_print_unavailable) (val_print_invalid_address, generic_val_print, val_print) (value_check_printable, val_print_array_elements): Use metadata style. * ui-out.h (class ui_out) <field_fmt>: New overload. <do_field_fmt>: Add style parameter. * ui-out.c (ui_out::field_fmt): New overload. * typeprint.c (type_print_unknown_return_type) (val_print_not_allocated, val_print_not_associated): Use metadata style. * tui/tui-out.h (class tui_ui_out) <do_field_fmt>: Add style parameter. * tui/tui-out.c (tui_ui_out::do_field_fmt): Update. * tracepoint.c (tvariables_info_1): Use metadata style. * stack.c (print_frame_arg, print_frame_info, print_frame) (info_frame_command_core): Use metadata style. * skip.c (info_skip_command): Use metadata style. * rust-lang.c (rust_print_enum): Use metadata style. * python/py-prettyprint.c (print_stack_unless_memory_error): Use metadata style. * python/py-framefilter.c (py_print_single_arg): Use metadata style. * printcmd.c (do_one_display, print_variable_and_value): Use metadata style. * p-valprint.c (pascal_val_print) (pascal_object_print_value_fields): Use metadata style. * p-typeprint.c (pascal_type_print_base): Use metadata style. * mi/mi-out.h (class mi_ui_out) <do_field_fmt>: Add style parameter. * mi/mi-out.c (mi_ui_out::do_field_fmt): Update. * m2-valprint.c (m2_print_long_set): Use metadata style. * m2-typeprint.c (m2_print_type): Use metadata style. * infcmd.c (print_return_value_1): Use metadata style. * gnu-v3-abi.c (print_one_vtable): Use metadata style. * f-valprint.c (info_common_command_for_block): Use metadata style. * f-typeprint.c (f_type_print_base): Use metadata style. * expprint.c (print_subexp_standard): Use metadata style. * cp-valprint.c (cp_print_value_fields): Use metadata style. * cli/cli-style.h (class cli_style_option): Add constructor. 2019-09-03Handle biased typesTom Tromey1-1/+1
In Ada, the programmer can request that a range type with a non-zero base be stored in the minimal number of bits required for the range. This is done by biasing the values; so, for example, a range of -7..-4 may be stored as two bits with a bias of -7. This patch implements this for gdb. It is done by adding a bias to struct range_bounds and then adjusting a few spots to handle this. The test case is written to use -fgnat-encodings=minimal, but a future compiler patch will change the compiler to emit DW_AT_GNU_bias with -fgnat-encodings=gdb. It seemed good to get the gdb patch in first. Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29; plus a variety of targets using AdaCore's internal test suite. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-09-03 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ada-valprint.c (ada_val_print_num): Don't recurse for range types. 2019-08-15Fix bug with character enumeration literalTom Tromey1-0/+8
gnat encodes character enumeration literals using a few different schemes. The gnat compiler documented the "QU" and "QW" encodings, but failed to document that a simpler encoding was used for certain characters. This patch updates gdb to handle this simple Q encoding. Note that wide character literals are still not handled. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-08-15 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ada-exp.y (convert_char_literal): Handle "Q%c" encoding. * ada-lang.c (ada_enum_name): Likewise. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog 2019-08-15 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * gdb.ada/char_enum.exp: Add regression tests. * gdb.ada/char_enum/foo.adb (Char_Enum_Type): Use '_' and '0'. 2019-08-07Make first and last lines of 'command help documentation' consistent.Philippe Waroquiers1-6/+6
With this patch, the help docs now respect 2 invariants: * The first line of a command help is terminated by a '.' character. * The last character of a command help is not a newline character. Note that the changes for the last invariant were done by Tom, as part of : [PATCH] Remove trailing newlines from help text https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2019-06/msg00050.html but some occurrences have been re-introduced since then. Some help docs had to be rephrased/restructured to respect the above invariants. Before this patch, print_doc_line was printing the first line of a command help documentation, but stopping at the first '.' or ',' character. This was giving inconsistent results : * The first line of command helps was sometimes '.' terminated, sometimes not. * The first line of command helps was not always designed to be readable/understandable/unambiguous when stopping at the first '.' or ',' character. This e.g. created the following inconsistencies/problems: < catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions < catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions < catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names < down-silently -- Same as the `down' command while the new help is: > catch exception -- Catch Ada exceptions, when raised. > catch handlers -- Catch Ada exceptions, when handled. > catch syscall -- Catch system calls by their names, groups and/or numbers. > down-silently -- Same as the `down' command, but does not print anything. Also, the command help doc should not be terminated by a newline character, but this was not respected by all commands. The cli-option -OPT framework re-introduced some occurences. So, the -OPT build help framework was changed to not output newlines at the end of %OPTIONS% replacement. This patch changes the help documentations to ensure the 2 invariants given above. It implied to slightly rephrase or restructure some help docs. Based on the above invariants, print_doc_line (called by 'apropos' and 'help' commands to print the first line of a command help) now outputs the full first line of a command help. This all results in a lot of small changes in the produced help docs. There are less code changes than changes in the help docs, as a lot of docs are produced by some code (e.g. the remote packet usage settings). gdb/ChangeLog 2019-08-07 Philippe Waroquiers <philippe.waroquiers@skynet.be> * cli/cli-decode.h (print_doc_line): Add for_value_prefix argument. * cli/cli-decode.c (print_doc_line): Likewise. 2019-07-09Rename common to gdbsupportTom Tromey1-4/+4
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the top level. This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit more tractable. I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too much difficulty. 2019-06-19Fix crash when setting breakpoint conditionTom Tromey1-7/+27
gdb could crash when setting a breakpoint condition on a breakpoint when using the Ada language. The problem occurred because the ada_evaluate_subexp would try to evaluate the array to compute its attributes, but evaluating can't really be done at this time. This patch fixes the problem by arranging not to try to evaluate in EVAL_AVOID_SIDE_EFFECTS mode when computing an attribute. Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29. Because this is Ada-specific, and because Joel approved it internally, I am checking it in. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-06-19 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ada-lang.c (ada_evaluate_subexp) <case OP_ATR_FIRST>: Handle EVAL_AVOID_SIDE_EFFECTS specially. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog 2019-06-19 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * gdb.ada/length_cond.exp: New file. * gdb.ada/length_cond/length_cond.adb: New file. * gdb.ada/length_cond/pck.adb: New file. * gdb.ada/length_cond/pck.ads: New file.

2019-06-14Allow re-assigning to convenience variablesTom Tromey1-1/+5
In Ada mode, re-assigning an array of a different size to a convenience variable will cause an error: (gdb) set lang ada (gdb) set $v := "abc" (gdb) set $v := "abcd" cannot assign arrays of different length However, this does not really make sense -- instead, it should always be possible to overwrite a convenience variable. This patch fixes this bug. This was reviewed off-list by Joel. Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-06-10 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ada-lang.c (_initialize_ada_language): Update help text.
2019-06-04Introduce and use make_unique_xstrdupPedro Alves1-2/+1
Adds an utility function to make it shorter to write the common case of wrapping an xstrdup with a unique_xmalloc_ptr, and uses it throughout. Note: I tried to put this in common/common-utils.h near skip_spaces, etc. but that is included in common/common-defs.h before common/gdb_unique_ptr.h is included, so it would fail to compile because gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr isn't defined at that point yet. I tried moving the gdb_unique_ptr.h inclusion before common-utils.h, but that doesn't work because gdb_unique_ptr.h depends on common-utils.h for xfree. gdb/ChangeLog: 2019-06-04 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * common/gdb_unique_ptr.h (make_unique_xstrdup): New. * ada-lang.c (catch_ada_completer): Use make_unique_xstrdup. * breakpoint.c (condition_completer): Likewise. * cli/cli-dump.c (scan_expression): Likewise. * common/filestuff.c (mkdir_recursive): Likewise. * common/gdb_tilde_expand.c (gdb_tilde_expand_up) * common/pathstuff.c (gdb_realpath, gdb_realpath_keepfile) (gdb_abspath): Likewise. * compile/compile-cplus-types.c (compile_cplus_instance::decl_name): Likewise. * completer.c (complete_explicit_location): (signal_completer, reg_or_group_completer_1): Likewise. * cp-support.c (cp_remove_params_if_any): Likewise. * fbsd-tdep.c (fbsd_core_vnode_path): Likewise. * guile/scm-safe-call.c (gdbscm_safe_eval_string): Likewise. * infcmd.c (strip_bg_char): Likewise. * linespec.c (copy_token_string): Likewise. * mi/mi-main.c (output_cores): Likewise. * psymtab.c (psymtab_search_name): * symfile.c (test_set_ext_lang_command): Likewise. * target.c (target_fileio_read_stralloc): Likewise. * tui/tui-regs.c (tui_reggroup_completer): Likewise. * value.c (complete_internalvar): Likewise. gdb/gdbserver/ChangeLog: 2019-06-04 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * server.c (captured_main): Use make_unique_xstrdup.
2019-05-28Remove find_old_style_renaming_symbolTom Tromey1-171/+9
We found a case where a "bt" was very slow with Ada code. Profiling with callgrind showed this to be primarily due to calls to find_old_style_renaming_symbol. Because new-style renaming symbols were implemented in 2007, it seems safe enough to remove this old code. A "-batch -ex bt" test on a large Ada program improves from: 13.23user 0.57system 0:13.82elapsed 99%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 571408maxresident)k to 4.25user 0.48system 0:04.74elapsed 99%CPU (0avgtext+0avgdata 559844maxresident)k with this patch. Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29. Joel reviewed this internally; and as it is Ada-specific, I am checking it in. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-05-28 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ada-lang.c (ada_remove_Xbn_suffix) (find_old_style_renaming_symbol) (parse_old_style_renaming): Remove. 2019-05-14Fix assertion failure in coerce_unspec_val_to_typeTom Tromey1-1/+2
coerce_unspec_val_to_type does: set_value_address (result, value_address (val)); However, this is only valid for lval_memory. This patch changes this code to only set the address for lval_memory values. This seems like an ordinary oversight in coerce_unspec_val_to_type, and a test case would be difficult to write, so I'm submitting it without a test case. Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29; plus using an Ada program that exhibits the bug (but which cannot be shared). gdb/ChangeLog 2019-05-14 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ada-lang.c (coerce_unspec_val_to_type): Only set address when value is not lval_memory.

2019-05-03Remove "struct" from foreach statementsTom Tromey1-2/+2
Some versions of gcc have a bug that causes for (struct mumble : something) ... to give a compiler error. We routinely work around this bug in gdb, but apparently had not done so in a while. 2019-05-01Fix bug in assignment to nested packed structureTom Tromey1-3/+4
A user at AdaCore found a case where assignment to a nested packed structure would fail. The bug is that ada_value_primitive_field doesn't account for the situation where a field is not packed relative to its containing structure, but where the structure itself is packed in its parent. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-05-01 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ada-lang.c (ada_value_primitive_field): Treat more fields as bitfields. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog 2019-05-01 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * gdb.ada/packed_array_assign/aggregates.ads (Nested_Packed): New record. 2019-05-01Fix big-endian aggregate assignment in AdaTom Tromey1-6/+8
A bug internal to AdaCore notes that assigning a non-scalar value to an element of a packed array will sometimes fail. The bug turns out to be that ada_value_assign incorrectly computes the starting point for the assignment. This patch fixes the problem. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-05-01 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ada-lang.c (ada_value_assign): Correctly compute starting offset for big-endian copies. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog 2019-05-01 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * gdb.ada/packed_array_assign.exp: Add packed assignment regression test.
2019-04-30Fix "catch exception" with dynamic linkingTom Tromey1-25/+83
When an Ada program is dynamically linked against libgnat, and when one of the standard exceptions is used, the exception object may be referenced by the main executable using a copy relocation. In this situation, a "catch exception" for those exceptions will not manage to stop. This happens because, under the hood, "catch exception" creates an expression object that examines the object addresses -- but in this case, the address will be incorrect. This patch fixes the problem by arranging for these filter expressions to examine all the relevant minimal symbols. This way, the object from libgnat will be found as well. Tested on x86-64 Fedora 29. gdb/ChangeLog 2019-04-30 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * ada-lang.c (ada_lookup_simple_minsyms): New function. (create_excep_cond_exprs): Iterate over program spaces. 2019-04-29gdb: Introduce new language field la_is_string_type_pAndrew Burgess1-0/+1
This commit is preparation work for the next commit, and by itself makes no user visible change to GDB. I've split this work into a separate commit in order to make code review easier. This commit adds a new field 'la_is_string_type_p' to the language struct, this predicate will return true if a type is a string type for the given language. Some languages already have a "is this a string" predicate that I was able to reuse, while for other languages I've had to add a new predicate. In this case I took inspiration from the value printing code for that language - what different conditions would result in printing something as a string. A default "is this a string" method has also been added that looks for TYPE_CODE_STRING, this is the fallback I've used for a couple of languages. In this commit I add the new field and initialise it for each language, however at this stage the new field is never used. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-lang.c (ada_language_defn): Initialise new field. * c-lang.c (c_is_string_type_p): New function. 2019-04-29gdb: Introduce new language field la_struct_too_deep_ellipsisAndrew Burgess1-1/+2
This commit is preparation work for a later commit, and by itself makes no user visible change to GDB. I've split this work into a separate commit in order to make code review easier. This commit adds a new field 'la_struct_too_deep_ellipsis' to the language struct, this string will be used in the next commit to print a language specific string from within the generic value printing code. In this commit I add the new field and initialise it for each language, however at this stage the new field is never used. gdb/ChangeLog: * language.h (struct language_defn) <la_struct_too_deep_ellipsis>: New field. * ada-lang.c (ada_language_defn): Initialise new field. * c-lang.c (c_language_defn): Likewise. 2019-04-29gdb/ada: Update some predicate functions to return boolAndrew Burgess1-4/+4
A later commit would like to make use of a pointer to the function ada_is_string_type, however, this will require the function to return a bool (so the signature matches). As the ada_is_string_type is a predicate function, and its return value is only ever used as either true or false, then this commit updates the function to return a bool. As a consequence ada_is_character_type needs to change too. There should be no user visible changes after this commit. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-lang.c (ada_is_character_type): Change return type to bool. (ada_is_string_type): Likewise. * ada-lang.h (ada_is_character_type): Update declaration (ada_is_string_type): Likewise.
