gas needs to build lists of sections for each group. This arranges to
build the lists earlier, so they can be used when looking for sections
that belong to a group. Using the section hash table to find sections
by name, then by group isn't efficient when there are numerous groups
with the same section names. Using a hash table to quickly find a
group, then searching by section name on a list for the group results
in a 100-fold speed improvement assembling the testcase in this PR.
To reduce the number of times we traverse the section list, the patch
also moves some processing done in elf_adjust_symtab for linked-to
section, to elf_frob_file. This requires a testsuite change because
processing will stop before elf_frob_file if there is a parse error in
section21.s, ie. you'll only get the "junk at end of line" error, not
the "undefined linked-to symbol" errors.

This patch adds support in GAS to create generic GAS instructions
(a.k.a., the ginsn) for the x86 backend (AMD64 ABI only at this time).
Using this ginsn infrastructure, GAS can then synthesize CFI for
hand-written asm for x86_64.
A ginsn is a target-independent representation of the machine
instructions. One machine instruction may need one or more ginsn.
This patch also adds skeleton support for printing ginsn in the listing
output for debugging purposes.
Since the current use-case of ginsn is to synthesize CFI, the x86 target
needs to generate ginsns necessary for the following machine
instructions only:
- All change of flow instructions, including all conditional and
unconditional branches, call and return from functions.
- All register saves and unsaves to the stack.
- All instructions affecting the two registers that could potentially
be used as the base register for CFA tracking. For SCFI, the base
register for CFA tracking is limited to REG_SP and REG_FP only for
now.
The representation of ginsn is kept simple:
- GAS instruction has GINSN_NUM_SRC_OPNDS (defined to be 2 at this time)
number of source operands and one destination operand at this time.
- GAS instruction uses DWARF register numbers in its representation and
does not track register size.
- GAS instructions carry location information (file name and line
number).
- GAS instructions are ID's with a natural number in order of their
addtion to the list. This can be used as a proxy for the static
program order of the corresponding machine instructions.
Note that, GAS instruction (ginsn) format does not support
GINSN_TYPE_PUSH and GINSN_TYPE_POP. Some architectures, like aarch64,
do not have push and pop instructions, but rather STP/LDP/STR/LDR etc.
instructions. Further these instructions have a variety of addressing
modes, like offset, pre-indexing and post-indexing etc. Among other
things, one of differences in these addressing modes is _when_ the addr
register is updated with the result of the address calculation: before
or after the memory operation. To best support such needs, the generic
instructions like GINSN_TYPE_LOAD, GINSN_TYPE_STORE together with
GINSN_TYPE_ADD, and GINSN_TYPE_SUB may be used.
The functionality provided in ginsn.c and scfi.c is compiled in when a
target defines TARGET_USE_SCFI and TARGET_USE_GINSN. This can be
revisited later when there are other use-cases of creating ginsn's in
GAS, apart from the current use-case of synthesizing CFI for
hand-written asm.
Support is added only for System V AMD64 ABI for ELF at this time. If
the user enables SCFI with --32, GAS issues an error:
"Fatal error: SCFI is not supported for this ABI"
For synthesizing (DWARF) CFI, the SCFI machinery requires the programmer
to adhere to some pre-requisites for their asm:
- Hand-written asm block must begin with a .type foo, @function
It is highly recommended to, additionally, also ensure that:
- Hand-written asm block ends with a .size foo, .-foo
The SCFI machinery encodes some rules which align with the standard
calling convention specified by the ABI. Apart from the rules, the SCFI
machinery employs some heuristics. For example:
- The base register for CFA tracking may be either REG_SP or REG_FP.
- If the base register for CFA tracking is REG_SP, the precise amount of
stack usage (and hence, the value of REG_SP) must be known at all times.
- If using dynamic stack allocation, the function must switch to
FP-based CFA. This means using instructions like the following (in
AMD64) in prologue:
pushq %rbp
movq %rsp, %rbp
and analogous instructions in epilogue.
- Save and Restore of callee-saved registers must be symmetrical.
However, the SCFI machinery at this time only warns if any such
asymmetry is seen.
These heuristics/rules are architecture-independent and are meant to
employed for all architectures/ABIs using SCFI in the future.

2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external

... after any (sub)section change. While certain existing target hooks
only look at now_seg, for a few others it looks as if failing to do so
could have caused anomalies if sub-sections were used. In any event a
subsequent x86 change is going to require the sub-section to be properly
in place at the time the hook is invoked.
This primarily means for obj_elf_section() to pass the new subsection
into change_section(), for it to be set right away (ahead of invoking
the hook).
Also adjust obj_elf_ident() to invoke the hook after all section
changes. (Note that obj_elf_version(), which also changes sections and
then changes them back, has no hook invocation at all so far, so none
are added. Presumably there is a reason for this difference in
behavior.)

get_stab_string_offset currently creates the stabstr section if not
already present, in the process keeping a reference to the malloc'd
section name string. Really, the name belongs in bfd_alloc'd memory
or some obstack so that it doesn't show as a memory leak on exit.
s_stab_generic at least does allocate the name for the stab section on
an obstack, but doesn't tidy that as well as it could. Return paths
after issuing a warning don't release the memory, nor the memory for
the "string" copy.
This patch fixes these problems. s_stab_generic is rearranged so that
creation of the sections occurs earlier, before any potential uses of
the note obstack during expression parsing. That makes it possible to
always free the section name strings unless used to create new
sections. I've also avoided get_absolute_expression_and_terminator
as I see that function might skip over end-of-line, and lack of a
--input_line_pointer might have caused the following source line to be
ignored. (Other uses of this function in gas are OK.)

While --sectname-subst is nice, it isn't enough to e.g. mimic
-f{function,data}-sections in assembly code, when such use is to be
optional (e.g. dependent upon some configuration setting).
Assign meaning to '+' and '-' as section attribute letters, allowing
to inherit the prior section's attributes (and possibly type) along
with adding or removing some. Note that documenting the interaction
with '?' as undefined is a precautionary measure.
While touching the function invocation, stop using |= on the result of
obj_elf_parse_section_letters(): "attr" is firmly zero ahead of the
call.
|
|
It's not documented anyway, and having it makes no sense anymore with
obj_elf_section_word() now being TC_SPARC-only. In any event the x86
backing function was dead code.

Freeing ecoff_debug_info "pointers to the unswapped symbolic info"
isn't a simple matter, due to differing allocation strategies. In
_bfd_ecoff_slurp_symbolic_info the pointers are to objalloc memory.
In the ecoff linker they are to separately malloc'd memory. In gas we
have most (obj-elf) or all (obj-ecoff) into a single malloc'd buffer.
This patch fixes the leaks for binutils and ld, leaving the gas leaks
for another day. The mips elf backend already had this covered, and
the ecoff backend had a pointer, raw_syments used as a flag, so most
of the patch is moving these around a little so they are accessible
for both ecoff and elf.

Using notes_calloc means all of the string hash table memory should
now be freed before gas exits, even though htab_delete isn't called.
This also means that the hash table free_f and del_f must be NULL,
because freeing notes obstack memory results in all more recently
allocated notes memory being freed too. So hash table resizing won't
free any memory, and will be a little faster. Also, htab_delete won't
do anything (and be quick about it).
Since htab_traverse can also resize hash tables (to make another
traversal faster if the table is largely empty), stop that happening
when only one traversal is done.

When handling section names in quotes obj_elf_section_name calls
demand_copy_C_string, which puts the name on the gas notes obstack.
Such strings aren't usually freed, since obstack_free frees all more
recently allocated objects as well as its arg. When handling
non-quoted names, obj_elf_section_name mallocs the name. Due to the
mix of allocation strategies it isn't possible for callers to free
names, if that was desirable. Partially fix this by always creating
names on the obstack, which is more efficient anyway. (You still
can't obstack_free on error paths due to the xtensa
tc_canonicalize_section_name.) Also remove a couple of cases where
the name is dup'd for no good reason as far as I know.

bar1's size is 2 while bar2, bar3, bar4's is 1. The behavior of bar1 makes sense
(generally directives on the new symbol should win) and is relied upon by glibc
stdio-common/errlist.c:
```
.hidden _sys_errlist_internal
.globl _sys_errlist_internal
// glibc expects that .size __GLIBC_2_1_sys_errlist, 125 * (64 / 8) wins.
```
The behavior of bar2/bar3/bar4 seems brittle. To avoid the reordering of the two
code blocks which will result in the bar3 situation, glibc compiles errlist.c
with gcc -fno-toplevel-reorder (previously -fno-unit-at-a-time).
To fix the inconsistency and improve robustness, make bar2/bar3/bar4 match bar1,
removing the directive order sensitivity.
There is a pity that `.size dest, 0` is indistinguishable from the case where
dest is unset, but the compromise seems fine.

These aren't specific to ELF at all, and seem generally useful.
So pull them out of the ELF backend and into the common core.
|
|
For ELF targets, section symbols are required only for relocations.
With -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections, there can be many unused
section symbols. Sizes of libstdc++.a on Linux/x86-64 in GCC 11 are
With unused section symbols : 39411698 bytes
Without unused section symbols: 39227002 bytes
The unused section symbols in libstdc++.a occupy more than 180 KB.
Add BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED to indicate if a section symbol should be
included in the symbol table. The BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED should be set
if the section symbol is used for relocation or the section symbol is
always included in the symbol table.
Add keep_unused_section_symbols to bfd_target to indicate if unused
section symbols should be kept. If TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS
is defined as FALSE, unused ection symbols will be removed.
Tested on Linux/x86. Other ELF backends need to:
1. Define TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS to FALSE.
2. Mark used section symbols in assembler backend.
3. Remove unused section symbols from expected assembler and linker
outputs.

elfNN_bed was made writable as an expedient means of communicating
ld -z max-page-size and ld -z common-page-size values to BFD linker
code, and even for objcopy to communicate segment alignment between
copy_private_bfd_data, rewrite_elf_program_header and

elf_osabi was written by gas. It turns out none of these

The SHF_GNU_RETAIN section flag is an extension to the GNU ELF OSABI.
It is defined as follows:
=========================================================
Section Attribute Flags
+-------------------------------------+
| Name | Value |
+-------------------------------------+
| SHF_GNU_RETAIN | 0x200000 (1 << 21) |
+-------------------------------------+
SHF_GNU_RETAIN
The link editor should not garbage collect the section.
=========================================================
The .section directive accepts the "R" flag, which indicates
SHF_GNU_RETAIN should be applied to the section.
There is not a direct mapping of SHF_GNU_RETAIN to the BFD
section flag SEC_KEEP. Keeping these flags distinct allows
SHF_GNU_RETAIN sections to be explicitly removed by placing them in
/DISCARD/.

Inserting with replacement is wrong for some gas hash table uses.
This patch implements an htab_insert that conditionally replaces, and
similarly for str_hash_insert. str_hash_insert with replace=0 is
roughly equivalent to the older hash_insert, and str_hash_insert with
replace=1 to the older hash_jam, but return values are different. I
found it useful to know whether the slot was occupied prior to
inserting/replacing. I've also reinstated the fatal errors on messing
up opcode tables with duplicates.

This patch fixes an internal error in GAS when defining a section using
a symbol that has already been named but not defined. For a minimal
reproducer, try the following input:
a=b
.sect a
The problem is that obj_elf_change_section() happily reuses the symbol
"a" created by equals() without clearing the sy_value field: prior to
this patch, it just set bsym. This caused a problem when attempting to
resolve the section symbol, since resolve_symbol_value() ended up
resolving the symbol as if it were the original symbol created by
equals(), which ends up leaving the section symbol in the undefined
section instead of in section a, hence the call to abort() in
S_SET_SEGMENT().

existing symbol, ensure that we set sy_value as per other (fresh)
