On DOS systems, absolute paths start with the drive letter. This can
trigger failures in the regexp from dump tests, especially for those
checking for warnings or errors. They are usually skipping everything
before the first ":" as it has to be the file path.
| [^:]*: warning: ...
In order to avoid modifying many regexps to allow such drive letters,
prune them from all the outputs if they are found at the beginning of
a line.

Fix these fails:
alpha-dec-vms +FAIL: ld-scripts/asciz
alpha-dec-vms +FAIL: ld-scripts/ascii
i386-go32 +FAIL: ld-scripts/asciz
sh-coff +FAIL: ld-scripts/asciz
It's better to positively select targets for .section support than to
try to exclude all targets that don't. Make a new is_coff_format so
we can easily select such.

PowerPC64 takes a more traditional approach to DT_RELR than x86. Count
relative relocs in check_relocs, allocate space for them and output in
the usual places but not doing so when enable_dt_relr. DT_RELR is
sized in the existing ppc stub relaxation machinery, run via the
linker's ldemul_after_allocation hook. DT_RELR is output in the same
function that writes ppc stubs, run via ldemul_finish.
This support should be considered experimental.

The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all
the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with
--enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking
out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.
The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit
breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

The top level Makefile, the ld Makefile and others, define
CC_FOR_TARGET to be a compiler for the binutils target machine. This
is the compiler that should be used for almost all tests with C
source. There are _FOR_TARGET versions of CFLAGS, CXX, and CXXFLAGS
too. This was all supposed to work with the testsuite .exp files
using CC for the target compiler, and CC_FOR_HOST for the host
compiler, with the makefiles passing CC=$CC_FOR_TARGET and
CC_FOR_HOST=$CC to the runtest invocation.
One exception to the rule of using CC_FOR_TARGET is the native-only ld
bootstrap test, which uses the newly built ld to link a copy of
itself. Since the files being linked were created with the host
compiler, the boostrap test should use CC and CFLAGS, in case some
host compiler option provides needed libraries automatically.
However, bootstrap.exp used CC where it should have used CC_FOR_HOST.
I set about fixing that problem, then decided that playing games in
the makefiles with CC was a bad idea. Not only is it confusing, but
other dejagnu code knows about CC_FOR_TARGET. See dejagnu/target.exp.
So this patch gets rid of the makefile variable renaming and changes
all the .exp files to use the correct _FOR_TARGET variables.
CC_FOR_HOST and CFLAGS_FOR_HOST disappear. A followup patch will
correct bootstrap.exp to use CFLAGS, and a number of other things I
noticed.

As discussed previously, a.out support is now quite deprecated, and in
some cases removed, in both Binutils itself and NetBSD, so this legacy
default makes little sense. `netbsdelf*` and `netbsdaout*` still work
allowing the user to be explicit about there choice. Additionally, the
configure script warns about the change as Nick Clifton requested.
One possible concern was the status of NetBSD on NS32K, where only a.out
was supported. But per [1] NetBSD has removed support, and if it were to
come back, it would be with ELF. The binutils implementation is
therefore marked obsolete, per the instructions in the last message.
With that patch and this one applied, I have confirmed the following:
--target=i686-unknown-netbsd
--target=i686-unknown-netbsdelf
builds completely
--target=i686-unknown-netbsdaout
properly fails because target is deprecated.
--target=vax-unknown-netbsdaout builds completely except for gas, where
the target is deprecated.

netbsdpe was deprecated in c2ce831330e10dab4703094491f80b6b9a5c2289.
Since then, a release has passed (2.37), and it was marked obselete in
5c9cbf07f3f972ecffe13d858010b3179df17b32. Unless I am mistaken, that
means we can now remove support altogether.
All branches in the "active" code are remove, and the target is
additionally marked as obsolete next to the other removed ones for
libbfd and gdb.
Per [1] from the NetBSD toolchain list, PE/COFF support was removed a
decade ago. Furthermore, the sole mention of this target in the binutils
commit history was in 2002. Together, I'm led to believe this target
hasn't seen much attention in quite a while.

For ELF targets, section symbols are required only for relocations.
With -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections, there can be many unused
section symbols. Sizes of libstdc++.a on Linux/x86-64 in GCC 11 are
With unused section symbols : 39411698 bytes
Without unused section symbols: 39227002 bytes
The unused section symbols in libstdc++.a occupy more than 180 KB.
Add BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED to indicate if a section symbol should be
included in the symbol table. The BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED should be set
if the section symbol is used for relocation or the section symbol is
always included in the symbol table.
Add keep_unused_section_symbols to bfd_target to indicate if unused
section symbols should be kept. If TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS
is defined as FALSE, unused ection symbols will be removed.
Tested on Linux/x86. Other ELF backends need to:
1. Define TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS to FALSE.
2. Mark used section symbols in assembler backend.
3. Remove unused section symbols from expected assembler and linker
outputs.

The ".persistent" section is for data that should be initialized during
load, but not during application reset.
The ".noinit" section is for data that should not be initialized during
load or application reset.
Targets utilizing the elf.sc linker script template can define
HAVE_{NOINIT,PERSISTENT}=yes to include the .noinit or .persistent
output sections in the generated linker script.
Targets with existing support for .noinit did not handle unique
.noinit.* and .gnu.linkonce.n.* sections the .noinit output section,
this patch also fixes that.

The SHF_GNU_RETAIN section flag is an extension to the GNU ELF OSABI.
It is defined as follows:
=========================================================
Section Attribute Flags
+-------------------------------------+
| Name | Value |
+-------------------------------------+
| SHF_GNU_RETAIN | 0x200000 (1 << 21) |
+-------------------------------------+
SHF_GNU_RETAIN
The link editor should not garbage collect the section.
=========================================================
The .section directive accepts the "R" flag, which indicates
SHF_GNU_RETAIN should be applied to the section.
There is not a direct mapping of SHF_GNU_RETAIN to the BFD
section flag SEC_KEEP. Keeping these flags distinct allows
SHF_GNU_RETAIN sections to be explicitly removed by placing them in
/DISCARD/.
bfd/ChangeLog:
* elf-bfd.h (enum elf_gnu_osabi): Add elf_gnu_osabi_retain.

The CTF assembler emitted by GCC has architecture-dependent pseudos in
it, and is (obviously) tightly tied to a particular set of C source
files with specific types in them. The CTF tests do run_dump_test on
some candidate input, link it using the run_dump_test ld machinery, and
compare objdump --ctf output. To avoid skew, we'd like to be able
to easily regenerate the .s being scanned so that the .c doesn't get
out of sync with it, but since GCC emits arch-dependent pseudos, we
are forced to hand-hack the output every time (quite severely on some
arches, like x86-32 and -64, where every single pseudo used is not only
arch-dependent but undocumented).
To avoid this, teach run_dump_test how to optionally compile things
given new, optional additional flags passed in in the cc option.
Only sources with the .c suffix are compiled, so there is no effect on
any existing tests. The .s files go into the tmpdir, from which
existing run_dump_test code picks them up as usual.
binutils/
* testsuite/lib/binutils-common.exp (run_dump_test): Add 'cc'
option.

A couple of ld ifunc tests currently FAIL on 64-bit Solaris/x86:
FAIL: ld-ifunc/ifunc-10-x86-64
FAIL: ld-ifunc/ifunc-11-x86-64

FAIL: ld-ifunc/pr17154-x86-64-now
FAIL: ld-ifunc/pr17154-x86-64
For one, the actual error is weird:
./ld-new: target elf64-x86-64 not found
failed with: <./ld-new: target elf64-x86-64 not found>, no expected output
FAIL: ld-ifunc/ifunc-10-x86-64
although ld -V does report the elf_x86_64 emulation as supported:
$ ./ld/ld-new -V
GNU ld (GNU Binutils) 2.34.50.20200328
Supported emulations:
elf_x86_64_sol2
elf_x86_64
[...]
When using ld -m elf_x86_64_sol2 instead, one of the testcases links
successfully.
However, there's no point in pursuing this: Solaris does not support
ifunc, as can be seen in <sys/elf.h>:
/*
* GNU/Linux specific symbol type not used by Solaris
*/
#define STT_GNU_IFUNC 10
and never will, given that it has symbol capabilities as solution to
effectively the same problem:
http://www.linker-aliens.org/blogs/rie/entry/symbol_capabilitie/
Therefore this patch disables ifunc testing on Solaris completely by
removing Solaris from binutils/testsuite/lib/binutils-common.exp
(supports_gnu_osabi). The ifunc part is justified above. SHF_GNU_MBIND is
in the OS-specific range and conflicts with
#define SHF_SUNW_REALLOC 0x01000000 /* internal: krtld realloc */
While the comment suggests this might be relocatable without too much
problems, the description of mbind (no formal spec AFAICS, just the
comment in the binutils patch submission) strongly suggests that this
isn't relevant to Solaris at all.
Indirectly, clearing supports_gnu_osabi on Solaris disables
supports_gnu_unique. Again, Solaris <sys/elf.h> has
/*
* GNU/Linux specific binding not used by Solaris
*/
#define STB_GNU_UNIQUE 10
so this seems the right thing to do.
Afterwards, one can remove the explicit mentions of *-*-solaris2* in
quite a number of (but not all) the ld-ifunc dump file notarget lists.
There's one fallout, though: two gas tests now XPASS because they are
xfail'ed for !supports_gnu_osabi:
XPASS: mbind sections 12
XPASS: mbind section contents 16
XPASS: mbind sections 16
XPASS: mbind section contents 16
To fix that, I've changed
#xfail: ![supports_gnu_osabi]
to notarget.
Tested on x86_64-pc-solaris2.11, i386-pc-solaris2.11,
x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, and i686-pc-linux-gnu.

With the addition of section16 tests we have multiple tests
advertising themselves as "mbind sections" and "mbind section

that force an OSABI value. It's a pain specifying all the relevant

This adds an alternative to using #... in dump files, useful where we

Committed on behalf of Matthew Malcomson.
This allows checking the command line parsing more easily than before by
allowing many command line invokations from the same .d file.
Each line is used as a set of flags, and the tests are ran against the output
of the assembler with each set.
Each line of assembler is treated as another set of tests (as if the test file
were copied to another with a different #as: line).
This patch includes some example uses where multiple testcases can be merged
into one file using this new functionality.

Some existing tests build .s and .d files for run_dump_test, using an
absolute #source: line in the .d file. This patch changes that scheme
a little to instead use "#source: ./..." in .d files rather than
"#source: $objdir/...", which is more useful in cases where the .d
file is not generated.
This allows RX gas test files to be built in the build directory,

run_dump_test proposes an ld action but when trying to make use of it in
a gas test it gave me some Tcl error. It turns out that it references
the check_shared_lib_support procedure and ld_elf_shared_opt variable
both only available in ld-lib.exp. I've thus moved the procedure in
binutils-common.exp and defined the variable needed in the various
default.exp of testsuite that seem to be using run_dump_test.
Since check_shared_lib_support itself references the ld variable not
defined in binutils-common I've defined it from LD in run_dump_test and
fixed LD and LDFLAGS to be defined as expected by run_dump_test in the
various default.exp of testsuite using run_dump_test.

handling versus the old gas version shows up a number of tests that
need their disassembly updating:
arm-linuxeabi +FAIL: ARM v1 instructions
arm-linuxeabi +FAIL: Accepted v8-a with ARMv8.1 AdvSIMD.
arm-linuxeabi +FAIL: bl local instructions for v4t.
arm-linuxeabi +FAIL: UDF
and some that now fail due to detecting assembly warnings:
h8300-elf +FAIL: binutils-all/strip-13
h8300-elf +FAIL: binutils-all/strip-14
h8300-elf +FAIL: binutils-all/strip-15
I've generally kept the union of all run_dump_test features, except
that the ld target aliases "cfi" and "shared" have disappeared, as has
the binutils substitution of $srcdir as $scrdir/$subdir.

When glibc is enabled with the new GNU_PROPERTY_X86_XXX bits:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/x86-64-abi/-D05GQ3kWrA
BFD will issue an unknown GNU property warning like
warning: tmpdir/ld1: unsupported GNU_PROPERTY_TYPE (5) type: 0xc0010001
and ignore such GNU properties. This patch adds prune_warnings_extra to
prune such warnings on release branches and updates prune_warnings to
call prune_warnings_extra.

The strip-13 test runs into difficulty using dc.a on some targets.
dc.a writes a power of 2 number of bytes large enough to contain a
target address. On some targets, eg. avr-elf, this can be 2 bytes but
the ELF format used require words of 4 bytes to make up a relocation
entry. There was a hack in the test, duplicating the reloc type into
what is normally the addend to make the test work when little-endian,
but that hack fails for similar big-endian targets.
This patch fixes that problem by arranging to emit 32-bit and 64-bit
ELF relocs using .4byte and .8byte directives, chosen as appropriate
for the ELF size. I've also bumped the reloc number tested to a
higher unused value, and made the number more easily parameterised by
target should that be necessary in the future. Whether REL or RELA
relocs are used is now chosen by a new is_rela readelf test of an
object file, rather than by lists of targets.
* testsuite/lib/binutils-common.exp (is_elf64): Use directory of
input file for readelf.out.
(is_rela): New proc.
* testsuite/binutils-all/objcopy.exp (elf64): Set new variable
from first result of is_elf64 test.
(reloc_format): Set using is_rela.
(strip-13): Pass RELOC and ELF64 to assembler.
(strip-14, strip-15): Use elf64 rather than calling is_elf64 again.
* testsuite/binutils-all/strip-13.d: Run for more targets.
* testsuite/binutils-all/strip-13mips64.s: Use RELOC and set
addend to zero.
* testsuite/binutils-all/strip-13rel.s: Use RELOC and ELF64.
Don't add _NONE reloc.
* testsuite/binutils-all/strip-13rela.s: Likewise.
