2022-04-04objdump/opcodes: add syntax highlighting to disassembler outputAndrew Burgess1-0/+4
This commit adds the _option_ of having disassembler output syntax highlighted in objdump. This option is _off_ by default. The new command line options are: --disassembler-color=off # The default. --disassembler-color=color --disassembler-color=extended-color I have implemented two colour modes, using the same option names as we use of --visualize-jumps, a basic 8-color mode ("color"), and an extended 8bit color mode ("extended-color"). The syntax highlighting requires that each targets disassembler be updated; each time the disassembler produces some output we now pass through an additional parameter indicating what style should be applied to the text. As updating all target disassemblers is a large task, the old API is maintained. And so, a user of the disassembler (i.e. objdump, gdb) must provide two functions, the current non-styled print function, and a new, styled print function. I don't currently have a plan for converting every single target disassembler, my hope is that interested folk will update the disassemblers they are interested in. But it is possible some might never get updated. In this initial series I intend to convert the RISC-V disassembler completely, and also do a partial conversion of the x86 disassembler. Hopefully having the x86 disassembler at least partial converted will allow more people to try this out easily and provide feedback. In this commit I have focused on objdump. The changes to GDB at this point are the bare minimum required to get things compiling, GDB makes no use of the styling information to provide any colors, that will come later, if this commit is accepted. This first commit in the series doesn't convert any target disassemblers at all (the next two commits will update some targets), so after this commit, the only color you will see in the disassembler output, is that produced from objdump itself, e.g. from objdump_print_addr_with_sym, where we print an address and a symbol name, these are now printed with styling information, and so will have colors applied (if the option is on). Finally, my ability to pick "good" colors is ... well, terrible. I'm in no way committed to the colors I've picked here, so I encourage people to suggest new colors, or wait for this commit to land, and then patch the choice of colors. I do have an idea about using possibly an environment variable to allow the objdump colors to be customised, but I haven't done anything like that in this commit, the color choices are just fixed in the code for now. binutils/ChangeLog: * NEWS: Mention new feature. * doc/binutils.texi (objdump): Describe --disassembler-color option. * objdump.c (disassembler_color): New global. 2022-01-02Update year range in copyright notice of binutils filesAlan Modra1-1/+1
The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit breaks building of bfp opcodes files.
2021-11-23AArch64: Add support for AArch64 EFI (efi-*-aarch64).Tamar Christina1-0/+3
This adds support for efi-*-aarch64 by virtue of adding a new PEI target pei-aarch64-little. This is not a full target and only exists to support EFI at this time. This means that this target does not support relocation processing and is mostly a container format. This format has been added to elf based aarch64 targets such that efi images can be made natively on Linux. However this target is not valid for use with gas but only with objcopy. With these changes the resulting file is recognized as an efi image by third party tools: > pecli info hello.efi Metadata ================================================================================ MD5: 598c32a778b0f0deebe977fef8578c4e SHA1: 4580121edd5cb4dc40f51b28f171fd15250df84c SHA256: 3154bd7cf42433d1c957f6bf55a17ad8c57ed41b29df2d485703349fd6ff1d5c Imphash: Size: 47561 bytes Type: PE32+ executable (EFI application) (stripped to external PDB), for MS Windows Compile Time: 1970-01-01 00:00:00 (UTC - 0x0 ) Entry point: 0x2000 (section .text) Sections ================================================================================ Name RWX VirtSize VirtAddr RawAddr RawSize Entropy md5 .text R-X 0x5bb0 0x2000 0x400 0x5c00 6.39 551fbc264256a3f387de8a891500ae0d .reloc R-- 0xc 0x8000 0x6000 0x200 0.02 0c45f6d812d079821c1d54c09ab89e1d .data RW- 0x1d88 0x9000 0x6200 0x1e00 4.18 5d1137c09f01289dc62bf754f7290db3 .dynamic RW- 0xf0 0xb000 0x8000 0x200 0.34 5c94ed3206f05a277e6f04fbf131f131 .rela R-- 0xe58 0xc000 0x8200 0x1000 1.87 8b5c6bc30f3acb7ca7bf2e6789d68519 .dynsym R-- 0x138 0xd000 0x9200 0x200 0.96 bdcf5101da51aadc663ca8859f88138c Imports ================================================================================ Any magic number is based on the Microsoft PE specification [1]. It is defined as follows: ========================================================= Section Attribute Flags +-------------------------------------+ | Name | Value | +-------------------------------------+ | SHF_GNU_RETAIN | 0x200000 (1 << 21) | +-------------------------------------+ SHF_GNU_RETAIN The link editor should not garbage collect the section. ========================================================= The .section directive accepts the "R" flag, which indicates SHF_GNU_RETAIN should be applied to the section. There is not a direct mapping of SHF_GNU_RETAIN to the BFD section flag SEC_KEEP. Keeping these flags distinct allows SHF_GNU_RETAIN sections to be explicitly removed by placing them in /DISCARD/. bfd/ChangeLog: * elf-bfd.h (enum elf_gnu_osabi): Add elf_gnu_osabi_retain. (struct elf_obj_tdata): Increase has_gnu_osabi to 4 bits. * elf.c (_bfd_elf_make_section_from_shdr): Set elf_gnu_osabi_retain for SHF_GNU_RETAIN. (_bfd_elf_final_write_processing): Report if SHF_GNU_RETAIN is not supported by the OSABI. Adjust error messages. * elflink.c (elf_link_input_bfd): Copy enabled has_gnu_osabi bits from input BFD to output BFD. 2020-01-09Add support for debuginfod to the binutils (disable by default, enabled via ↵Aaron Merey1-0/+9
a configure time option). debuginfod is a lightweight web service that indexes ELF/DWARF debugging resources by build-id and serves them over HTTP. This patch enables objdump and readelf to query debuginfod servers when they are otherwise not able to find separate debug files. Binutils can be built with debuginfod using the --with-debuginfod configure option. This requires that libdebuginfod be installed and found at configure time. debuginfod is packaged with elfutils, starting with version 0.178. 2019-05-28binutils: CTF support for objdump and readelfNick Alcock1-1/+4
This introduces CTF support for objdump and readelf. objdump has the following new arguments: --ctf=SECTION: display CTF in the given SECTION --ctf-parent=SECTION: name of CTF section that is the parent of this section readelf has the above, and these two as well: --ctf-symbols=SECTION: name of symbol table section (optional) --ctf-strings=SECTION: name of string table section (optional) (objdump can always use BFD machinery to determine the applicable string and symbol tables automatically, so these arguments are unnecessary.) Nearly all the work is done by the ctf_dump machinery in libctf: most of the remaining work is option-processing and section-reading, and thus is different for objdump and readelf: the minimal amount of similar code remaining is, in my view, too small to share, particularly given that objdump uses ctf_bfdopen() and readelf uses ctf_simple_open() since it doesn't have a bfd. I am not particularly satisfied with the way resources are freed in either of these (I was forced to do it at the top level, for lack of anywhere else to free resources allocated during option processing), but I can't see any better way to do it without introducing new infrastructure for no other purpose. There are essentially arbitrary ordering changes to the Makefile.in's order of libtool-related stuff that I can't get rid of, but they have no semantic effect. (It is possible that some hunks of these changes could be dropped, but that seems a bit risky to me.) binutils/ * objdump.c (ctf-api.h): New include. (dump_ctf_section_info): New variable. 2019-02-08binutils: Add new GNU format mode to `size` utilityAndrew Burgess1-0/+5
The size tool currently defaults to berkeley format output. However, this output format has a weird quirk, read-only data is counted against the text sections, not the data sections. The code offers no real explanation for why this is, but I'm reluctant to change it for two reasons, first, I'm assuming it probably makes sense in some case that I'm not thinking of (maybe a target where sections are not marked executable, and so there's no distinction between read-only data and code), and second, the code has been this way for at least 20 years, I worry that changing things now might cause more confusion than it solves. This commit then introduces a new output format for the size tool, this new format displays the results in a similar manor to the berkeley format, but counts read-only data in the data column, and only executable sections are counted in the text column. Given that this is a brand new output format I've gone ahead and simplified things a little, while the berkeley format displays the total twice, once in decimal and once in hex, the new display format just displays the total in decimal. Of course, there's still the '--radix' option which can be used to display all the results in hexadecimal or octal. I've called the new format 'gnu', so '--format=gnu' or '-G' are used to access it. binutils/ChangeLog: * size.c (berkeley_format): Delete. (enum output_format): New enum. (selected_output_format): New variable. (usage): Update to mention GNU format. (main): Update to extract options, and select format as needed. Handle GNU format where needed.
