The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all
the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with
--enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking
out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.
The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit
breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

I built GDB with `--enable-targets=all`, then started GDB passing it
an x86-64 executable, finally I ran 'maint selftest', and observed GDB
crash like this:

The problem originates from two locations, for example in csky-dis.c
(csky_get_disassembler) where we do this:

...
sec_name = get_elf_backend_data (abfd)->obj_attrs_section;
if (bfd_get_section_by_name (abfd, sec_name) != NULL)
...
We end up in here because during the selftests GDB forces the
architecture to be csky, but the BFD being accessed is still of type
x86-64. As a result obj_attrs_section returns NULL, which means we
end up passing NULL to bfd_get_section_by_name. If we follow the
function calls from bfd_get_section_by_name we eventually end up in
bfd_hash_hash, which asserts that the string (i.e. the name) is not
NULL.
The same crash can be reproduced in GDB without using the selftests,
for example:

The fix I propose here is to have bfd_get_section_by_name return NULL
if name is ever NULL. For consistency I updated
bfd_get_section_by_name_if in the same way, even though I'm not
hitting any problems along that code path right now.
I looked through the source tree and removed two NULL checks in
bfd/dwarf2.c which are no longer needed, its possible that there are
additional NULL checks that could be removed, I just didn't find them.

This moves the SHF_LINK_ORDER sorting from bfd_elf_final_link to
the linker which means generic ELF targets now support SHF_LINK_ORDER
and we cope with odd cases that require resizing of output sections.
The patch also fixes two bugs in the current implementation,
introduced by commit cd6d537c48fa. The pattern test used by that
commit meant that sections matching something like
"*(.IA_64.unwind* .gnu.linkonce.ia64unw.*)" would not properly sort a
mix of sections matching the two wildcards. That commit also assumed
a stable qsort.

For non-relocatable link with SHF_LINK_ORDER inputs, allow mixed indirect
and data inputs with ordered and unordered inputs:
1. Add pattern to bfd_section for the matching section name pattern in
linker script and update BFD_FAKE_SECTION.
2. Sort the consecutive bfd_indirect_link_order sections with the same
pattern to allow linker script to overdide input section order.
3. Place unordered sections before ordered sections.
4. Change the offsets of the indirect input sections only.

--gc-sections will silently remove __patchable_function_entries section
and generate corrupt result. This patch adds the section flag 'o' to
.section directive:

Linker is updated to call mark_hook if gc_mark of any of its linked-to
sections is set after all sections, except for backend specific ones,
have been garbage collected.

Clang's integrated assembler supports multiple section with the same
name:

"unique,N" assigns the number, N, as the section ID, to a section. The
valid values of the section ID are between 0 and 4294967295. It can be
used to distinguish different sections with the same section name.
This is useful with -fno-unique-section-names -ffunction-sections.
-ffunction-sections by default generates .text.foo, .text.bar, etc.
Using the same string can save lots of space in .strtab.
This patch adds section_id to bfd_section and reuses the linker
internal bit in BFD section flags, SEC_LINKER_CREATED, for assmebler
internal use to mark valid section_id. It also updates objdump to
compare section pointers if 2 sections comes from the same file since
2 different sections can have the same section name.

This one exposed a bug in tic6x gas, found with inline function
parameter type checking. struct bfd_section and struct bfd_symbol
both have a flags field, so bfd_is_com_section (symbol) compiled OK
when bfd_is_com_section was a macro but didn't special case common
symbols.

This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.
The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2013-05/msg00271.html was supposed
to banish "file format is ambiguous" errors for ELF. It didn't,
because the code supposedly detecting formats that implement
match_priority didn't work. That was due to not placing all matching
targets into the vector of matching targets. ELF objects should all
match the generic ELF target (priority 2), plus one or more machine
specific targets (priority 1), and perhaps a single machine specific
target with OS/ABI set (priority 0, best match). So the armel object
in the testcase actually matches elf32-littlearm,
elf32-littlearm-symbian, and elf32-littlearm-vxworks (all priority 1),
and elf32-little (priority 2). As the PR reported, elf32-little
wasn't seen as matching. Fixing that part of the problem wasn't too
difficult but matching the generic ELF target as well as the ARM ELF
targets resulted in ARM testsuite failures.
These proved to be the annoying reordering of stubs that occurs from
time to time due to the stub names containing the section id.
Matching another target causes more sections to be created in
elf_object_p. If section ids change, stub names change, which results
in different hashing and can therefore result in different hash table
traversal and stub creation order. That particular problem is fixed
by resetting section_id to the initial state before attempting each
target match, and taking a snapshot of its value after a successful
match.

Define a SEC_FIXED_SIZE section flag for target backends to use for
output sections whose size has been fixed in the psABI. The size of
such sections will not be changed anyhow by the generic linker and it is
up to the target backend to get their size right.

This patch defines a bunch of new functions to use in the BFD target
structs rather than casting bfd_false or bfd_true and similar stub
functions. I've also renamed the stub functions to reflect their
parameters and put "error" in the name if they set bfd_error. The
latter change is important since there were quite a few uses of
bfd_false where setting bfd_error was inappropriate, for example in
elf_backend_allow_non_load_phdr and is_target_special_symbol.

Change compressed input debug section name for objdump is very confusing.
But we need to change it for linker so that linker will consider the
input section as a debug section. This patch delays section rename to
elf_fake_sections for objcopy and avoids it for objdump.

This patch adds --compress-debug-sections=[none|zlib|zlib-gnu|zlib-gabi]
to ld for ELF targets to support generating compressed DWARF debug
sections. We always generate .zdebug_* section since section names have
been finalized and they can't be changed easily when compression is
being performed.

This implements a work-around for an icache bug on 476 that can cause
execution of stale instructions when control falls through from one
page to the next. The idea is to prevent such fall-through by
replacing the last instruction on a page with a branch to a patch
area containing the instruction, then branch to the next page.
The patch also fixes a number of bugs in the existing support for long
branch trampolines.
