This patches adds new bsefi and bsifi instructions. BSEFI- The instruction shall extract a bit field from a register and place it right-adjusted in the destination register. The other bits in the destination register shall be set to zero. BSIFI- The instruction shall insert a right-adjusted bit field from a register at another position in the destination register. The rest of the bits in the destination register shall be unchanged. 2023-09-25Revert "arc: Add new ARCv3 ISA to BFD."Claudiu Zissulescu1-44/+0
This reverts commit 06e8d9861d16c5b7e6920ad0e89889ccf45c575a.
2023-09-25arc: Add new ARCv3 ISA to BFD.Claudiu Zissulescu1-0/+44
The new Synopsys's ARCv3 ISA is capable to run either 64-bit or 32-bit ISA. The new 32-bit ISA is not compatible with the old Synopsys ARCv1/ARCv2 ISA, however, it retains a lot of common concepts. Thus, this patch is reusing the old ARC BFD backend and adds the necessary bits for the new architecture in a similar way as it is done for RISCV backend. bfd/ xxxx-xx-xx Claudiu Zissulescu <claziss@synopsys.com> Cupertino Miranda <cupertinomiranda@gmail.com> * bfd/Makefile.am: Add ARC64 files. * bfd/Makefile.in: Regerate. * bfd/arc-got.h (TCB_SIZE): Depends on the target architecture. 2023-07-24bpf: add support for jal/gotol jump instruction with 32-bit targetJose E. Marchesi1-0/+2
This patch adds support for the V4 BPF instruction jal/gotol, which is like ja/goto but it supports a signed 32-bit PC-relative (in number of 64-bit words minus one) target operand instead of the 16-bit signed operand of the other instruction. This greatly increases the jump range in BPF programs. Tested in bpf-unkown-none. bfd/ChangeLog: 2023-07-24 Jose E. 2023-07-21DesCGENization of the BPF binutils portJose E. Marchesi1-0/+2
CGEN is cool, but the BPF architecture is simply too bizarre for it. The weird way of BPF to handle endianness in instruction encoding, the weird C-like alternative assembly syntax, the weird abuse of multi-byte (or infra-byte) instruction fields as opcodes, the unusual presence of opcodes beyond the first 32-bits of some instructions, are all examples of what makes it a PITA to continue using CGEN for this port. The bpf.cpu file is becoming so complex and so nested with p-macros that it is very difficult to read, and quite challenging to update. Also, every time we are forced to change something in CGEN to accommodate BPF requirements (which is often) we have to do extensive testing to make sure we do not break any other target using CGEN. This is getting un-maintenable. So I have decided to bite the bullet and revamp/rewrite the port so it no longer uses CGEN. Overall, this involved: * To remove the cpu/bpf.{cpu,opc} descriptions. * To remove the CGEN generated files. * To replace the CGEN generated opcodes table with a new hand-written opcodes table for BPF. * To replace the CGEN generated disassembler wih a new disassembler that uses the new opcodes. * To replace the CGEN generated assembler with a new assembler that uses the new opcodes. * To replace the CGEN generated simulator with a new simulator that uses the new opcodes. [This is pushed in GDB in another patch.] * To adapt the build systems to the new situation. Additionally, this patch introduces some extensions and improvements: * A new BPF relocation BPF_RELOC_BPF_DISP16 plus corresponding ELF relocation R_BPF_GNU_64_16 are added to the BPF BFD port. These relocations are used for section-relative 16-bit offsets used in load/store instructions. * The disassembler now has support for the "pseudo-c" assembly syntax of BPF. What dialect to use when disassembling is controlled by a command line option. * The disassembler now has support for dumping instruction immediates in either octal, hexadecimal or decimal. The used output base is controlled by a new command-line option. * The GAS BPF test suite has been re-structured and expanded in order to test the disassembler pseudoc syntax support. Minor bugs have been also fixed there. The assembler generic tests that were disabled for bpf-*-* targets due to the previous implementation of pseudoc syntax are now re-enabled. Additional tests have been added to test the new features of the assembler. .dump files are no longer used. * The linker BPF test suite has been adapted to the command line options used by the new disassembler. The result is very satisfactory. This patchs adds 3448 lines of code and removes 10542 lines of code. Tested in: * Target bpf-unknown-none with 64-bit little-endian host and 32-bit little-endian host. * Target x86-64-linux-gnu with --enable-targets=all Note that I have not tested in a big-endian host yet. I will do so once this lands upstream so I can use the GCC compiler farm. I have not included ChangeLog entries in this patch: these would be massive and not very useful, considering this is pretty much a rewrite of the port. I beg the indulgence of the global maintainers.

2023-05-03Generated docs and include filesAlan Modra1-15/+11
bfd/doc/chew.c extracts documentation from source code comments annotated with keywords, and generates much of bfd.h and libbfd.h from those same comments. The docs have suffered from people (me too) adding things like CODE_FRAGMENT to the source to put code into bfd.h without realising that CODE_FRAGMENT also puts @example around said code into the docs. So we have random senseless things in the docs. This patch fixes that problem (well, the senseless things from CODE_FRAGMENT), moves most of the code out of bfd-in.h, and improves a few chew.c features. libbfd.h now automatically gets ATTRIBUTE_HIDDEN prototypes, and indentation in bfd.h and libbfd.h is better.

2023-01-19howto install_addendAlan Modra1-230/+59
This adds a new flag to the reloc howtos that can be used to incrementally change targets over to simple bfd_install_relocation that just installs the addend without any weird adjustments. I've made a few other changes to bfd_install_relocation, removing dead code and comments that are really only applicable to bfd_perform_relocation. There is also a reloc offset bounds check change. I've moved the check to where data is accessed, as it seems reasonable to me to not perform the check unless it is needed. There is precedence for this; Relocations against absolute symbols already avoided the check. I also tried always performing the reloc offset check, and ran into testsuite failures due to _NONE and _ALIGN relocs at the end of sections. These likely would be fixed if all such reloc howtos had size set to zero, but I would rather not edit lots of files when it involves checking that target code does not use the size. * reloc.c (struct reloc_howto_struct): Add install_addend. (HOWTO_INSTALL_ADDEND): Define. (HOWTO): Init new field with HOWTO_INSTALL_ADDEND. (bfd_install_relocation): Remove comments copied from bfd_perform_relocation that aren't applicable here. 2022-12-17bfd_get_relocated_section_contents allow NULL data bufferAlan Modra1-1/+4
This patch removes the bfd_malloc in default_indirect_link_order and bfd_simple_get_relocated_section_contents, pushing the allocation down to bfd_get_relocated_section_contents. The idea is to make use of the allocation done with sanity checking in bfd_get_full_section_contents, which is called by bfd_generic_get_relocated_section_contents. Doing this exposed a bug in bfd_get_full_section_contents. With relaxation it is possible that an input section rawsize is different to the section size. In that case we want to use the larger of rawsize (the on-disk size for input sections) and size. * reloc.c (bfd_generic_get_relocated_section_contents), * reloc16.c (bfd_coff_reloc16_get_relocated_section_contents), * coff-alpha.c (alpha_ecoff_get_relocated_section_contents), * coff-sh.c (sh_coff_get_relocated_section_contents), * elf-m10200.c (mn10200_elf_get_relocated_section_contents), * elf-m10300.c (mn10300_elf_get_relocated_section_contents), * elf32-avr.c (elf32_avr_get_relocated_section_contents), * elf32-cr16.c (elf32_cr16_get_relocated_section_contents), * elf32-crx.c (elf32_crx_get_relocated_section_contents), * elf32-h8300.c (elf32_h8_get_relocated_section_contents), * elf32-nds32.c (nds32_elf_get_relocated_section_contents), * elf32-sh.c (sh_elf_get_relocated_section_contents), * elfxx-mips.c (_bfd_elf_mips_get_relocated_section_contents): Handle NULL data buffer. * bfd.c (bfd_get_section_alloc_size): New function. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * compress.c (bfd_get_full_section_contents): Correct section malloc size. * linker.c (default_indirect_link_order): Don't malloc memory here before calling bfd_get_relocated_section_contents. * simple.c (bfd_simple_get_relocated_section_contents): Likewise.

Commit 04f096fb9e25 ("Move the xc16x target to the obsolete list") moved the architecture from the "obsolete but still available" to the "obsolete / support removed" list in config.bfd, making the architecture impossible to enable (except maybe via "enable everything" options"). 2022-06-14BFD_RELOC_MIPS_16Alan Modra1-1/+1
MIPS should not be using BFD_RELOC_16 for its R_MIPS_16 relocation, since R_MIPS_16 specifies a 16-bit field in a 32-bit word. BFD_RELOC_16, emitted by generic code to handle fixups on 16-bit data directives, expects fixups to operate on the whole of a 16-bit word. This patch corrects the problem by using BFD_RELOC_MIPS_16, a new bfd reloc that is used to generate R_MIPS_16. BFD_RELOC_16 is handled in md_apply_fix for cases where the fixup can be applied at assembly time. Like BFD_RELOC_8, BFD_RELOC_16 now has no corresponding object file relocation, and thus .half, .hword, .short and .dc.w must be resolved at assembly time. BFD_RELOC_MIPS_REL16 is removed by this patch since it isn't used. 2022-06-08Don't encode reloc.sizeAlan Modra1-50/+27
I expect the encoded reloc.size field originally came from aout r_length ecoding, but somehow went wrong for 64-bit relocs (which should have been encoded as 3). Toss all that out, just use a byte size instead. The changes outside of reloc.c in this patch should make the code independent of how reloc.size is encoded. * reloc.c (struct reloc_howto_struct): Increase size field by one bit. Comment. 2022-06-08HOWTO size encodingAlan Modra1-4/+4
This changes the HOWTO macro to encode the howto.size field from a value given in bytes. 2021-11-15PowerPC64 @notoc in non-power10 codeAlan Modra1-0/+2
R_PPC64_REL24_P9NOTOC is a variant of R_PPC64_REL24_NOTOC for use on @notoc cals from non-power10 code in the rare case that using such a construct is useful. R_PPC64_REL24_P9NOTOC will be emitted by gas rather than R_PPC64_REL24_NOTOC when @notoc is used in a branch instruction if power10 instructions are not enabled at that point. The new relocation tells the linker to not use power10 instructions on any stub emitted for that branch, unless overridden by --power10-stubs=yes. The current linker heuristic of only generating power10 instructions for stubs if power10-only relocations are detected, continues to be used. include/ * elf/ppc64.h (R_PPC64_REL24_P9NOTOC): Define. bfd/ * reloc.c (BFD_RELOC_PPC64_REL24_P9NOTOC): Define. * elf64-ppc.c (ppc64_elf_howto_raw): Add entry for new reloc. 2021-08-06bfd_reloc_offset_in_range overflowAlan Modra1-1/+1

2021-05-06or1k: Implement relocation R_OR1K_GOT_AHI16 for gotha()Stafford Horne1-0/+2

Amongst the things done by this commit: - Update XCOFF auxialiary header to match new version and allow TLS sections. - Add TLS sections (.tdata and .tbss) support in gas and ld. - Add support for the TLS relocations in gas and ld. Two different types BFD_RELOC are created for PPC and PPC64 as the size is a pointer, thus distinct in 32 or 64bit. The addresses given by ld to .tdata and .tbss is a bit special. In XCOFF, these addresses are actually offsets from the TLS pointer computed at runtime. AIX assembly and linker does the same. In top of that, the .tdata must be before .data (this is mandatory for AIX loader). Thus, the aix ld script is recomputing "." before .data to restore its original value. There might be a simpler way, but this one is working. Optimisation linked to TLS relocations aren't yet implemented. bfd/ * reloc.c (BFD_RELOC_PPC_TLS_LE, BFD_RELOC_PPC_TLS_IE, BFD_RELOC_PPC_TLS_M, BFD_RELOC_PPC_TLS_ML, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_GD, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_LD, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_LE, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_IE, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_M, BFD_RELOC_PPC64_TLS_ML): New relocations. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * libbfd.h: Regenerate. * coff-rs6000.c (xcoff_calculate_relocation): Call xcoff_reloc_type_tls for TLS relocations. 2021-03-12aix: implement R_TOCU and R_TOCL relocationsClément Chigot1-0/+4
Implement support for largetoc on XCOFF. R_TOCU and R_TOCL are referenced by the new BFD defines: BFD_RELOC_PPC_TOC16_HI and BFD_RELOC_PPC_TOC16_LO. A new toc storage class is added XMC_TE. In order to correctly handle R_TOCU, the logic behind xcoff_reloc_type_toc is changed to compute the whole TOC offset instead of just the difference between the "link" offset and the "assembly" offset. In gas, add a function to transform addis format used by AIX "addis RT, D(RA)" into the ELF format "addis RT, RA, SI". bfd/ * reloc.c (BFD_RELOC_PPC_TOC16_HI, BFD_RELOC_PPC_TOC16_LO): New relocations. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * libbfd.h: Regenerate. * coff-rs6000.c (xcoff_calculate_relocation): Call xcoff_reloc_type_toc for R_TOCU and R_TOCL. 2021-03-05Move x86_64 PE changes out of bfd_perform_relocationAlan Modra1-25/+1
bfd_perform_relocation should not have special case target code. This patch moves the code that was there for x86_64 PE linking to ELF output into the x86_64 PE howto special function, correcting that function for linking to targets other than ELF too. The fixes in bfd_perform_relocation were over-complicated due to needing to compensate for things that had already gone wrong in coff_amd64_reloc. In particular, an adjustment for pc-relative relocs was done in a way that meant adjustment for things related to symbol offsets was lost. I think those two things are orthogonal, but who knows with COFF where addends and symbol values are found randomly in the section contents. Note that linking natively to an x86_64 PE output relocates by coff_pe_amd64_relocate_section, which does not use arelent relocs or bfd_perform_relocation, but be aware of coff_amd64_rtype_to_howto hacking addends for relocations. The adjustments for a particular relocation type there and in coff_amd64_reloc ought to match after taking into consideration CALC_ADDEND. They don't. For example, the pc-relative adjustment for R_PCRWORD is 2 bytes in coff_amd64_reloc and 4 bytes in coff_amd64_rtype_to_howto. * reloc.c (bfd_perform_relocation): Revert 2021-01-12 and 2020-09-16 changes. * coff-x86_64.c (coff_amd64_reloc): Do more or less the same adjustments here instead. Separate pc-relative adjustments from symbol related adjustments. Tidy comments and formatting.

2020-09-08MSP430: Support relocations for subtract expressions in .uleb128 directivesJozef Lawrynowicz1-0/+5
Link-time relaxations of branches are common for MSP430, given that GCC can generate pessimal branch instructions, and the -mcode-region=either/-mdata-region=either options to shuffle sections can further change the type of branch instruction required. These relaxations can result in invalid code when .uleb128 directives, used in the .gcc_except_table section, are used to calculate the distance between two labels. A value for the .uleb128 directive is calculated at assembly-time, and can't be updated at link-time, even if relaxation causes the distance between the labels to change. This patch adds relocations for subtract expressions in .uleb128 directives, to allow the linker to re-calculate the value of these expressions after relaxation has been performed. bfd/ChangeLog: * bfd-in2.h (bfd_reloc_code_real): Add BFD_RELOC_MSP430_{SET,SUB}_ULEB128. * elf32-msp430.c (msp430_elf_ignore_reloc): New.
