libraries and the BFD library's file caching mechanism.
PR 29389
bfd * bfd.c (BFD_CLOSED_BY_CACHE): New bfd flag.
* cache.c (bfd_cache_delete): Set BFD_CLOSED_BY_DELETE on the
closed bfd.
(bfd_cache_lookup_worker): Clear BFD_CLOSED_BY_DELETE on the newly
reopened bfd.
* opncls.c (bfd_set_filename): Refuse to change the name of a bfd
that has been closed by bfd_cache_delete. Mark changed bfds as
uncacheable.
* bfd-in2.h: Regenerate.
ld * ldlang.h (lang_input_statement_struct): Add sort_key field.
* emultempl/pe.em (after_open): If multiple import libraries refer
to the same bfd, store their names in the sort_key field.
* emultempl/pep.em (after_open): Likewise.
* ldlang.c (sort_filename): New function. Returns the filename to
be used when sorting input files.
(wild_sort): Use the sort_filename function.

The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all
the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with
--enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking
out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.
The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit
breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

When link_info.keep_memory is true, linker caches the relocation
information and symbol tables of input files in memory. When there
are many input files with many relocations, we may run out of memory.
Add --max-cache-size=SIZE to set the maximum cache size.

Linker plugin_object_p opens the IR archive for each IR archive member.
For GCC plugin, plugin_object_p closes the archive file descriptor. But
for LLVM plugin, the archive file descriptor remains open. If there are
3000 IR archive members, there are 3000 file descriptors for them. We
can run out of file descriptors petty easily.
1. Add archive_plugin_fd and archive_plugin_fd_open_count to bfd so that
we can cache and reuse the IR archive file descriptor for all IR archive
members in the archive.
2. Add bfd_plugin_close_file_descriptor to properly close the IR archive
file descriptor.

git commit 7b958a48e132 put the bfd filename in the bfd objalloc
memory. That means the filename is freed by _bfd_free_cached_info.
Which is called by _bfd_compute_and_write_armap to tidy up symbol
tables after they are done with.
Unfortunately, _bfd_write_archive_contents wants to seek and read from
archive elements after that point, and if the number of elements
exceeds max_open_files in cache.c then some of those elements will
have their files closed. To reopen, you need the filename.

ldmain.c:add_archive_element copies file name pointers from the bfd to
a lang_input_statement_type.
input->filename = abfd->filename;
input->local_sym_name = abfd->filename;
This results in stale pointers when twiddling the bfd filename in
places like the pe ld after_open. So don't free the bfd filename,
and make copies using bfd_alloc memory that won't result in small
memory leaks that annoy memory checkers.

This patch removes the bfd_alloc2 series of memory allocation functions,
replacing them with __builtin_mul_overflow followed by bfd_alloc. Why
do that? Well, a followup patch will implement _bfd_alloc_and_read

We have calls to bfd_get_size when swapping in ELF section headers.
Since object files can have a large number of sections, it's worth
caching the file size rather than making lots of stat system calls.

bitfields. Add "size".

This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.
The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

elf64_vms_close_and_cleanup calls bfd_get_size, which calls
iovec->bstat. cache_bstat ends up adding the bfd to the cache lru
list, negating the bfd_cache_close call in bfd_close_all_done. So
there is a dangling pointer into the freed and then reused bfd. Thus,
bfd_cache_close must be called after _close_and_cleanup, or better,
via iovec->bclose.

LTO output objects have an STT_FILE symbol using the name of the file,
a temporary file. This results in executables that can't be exactly
reproduced, so the file name needs to be dropped. We don't want to
lose all file symbols when linking a mix of lto and non-lto objects as
a file symbol can be used to figure which source file generated a
given local symbol. So lto output objects need to be marked.
I chose to mark lto output objects with a new bfd flag. This flag is
also used to fix a bug in the link-once handling; An object being
loaded after "loading_lto_outputs" is set might be one extracted from
an archive to satisfy new references from lto objects, not an lto
object itself.
The new flag is copied from archive to elements, and the same done
for no_export. This fixes a bug in that --exclude-libs doesn't work
with thin archives. I'm not completely happy with this part of the
patch and may revist this to avoid the hack in
_bfd_look_for_bfd_in_cache.

This patch fixes gdb PR symtab/15597.
The bug is that the .gnu_debugaltlink section includes the build-id of
the alt file, but gdb does not use it.
This patch fixes the problem by changing gdb to do what it ought to
always have done: verify the build id of the file found using the
filename in .gnu_debugaltlink; and if that does not match, try to find
the correct debug file using the build-id and debug-file-directory.
This patch touches BFD. Previously, gdb had its own code for parsing
.gnu_debugaltlink; I changed it to use the BFD functions after those
were introduced. However, the BFD functions are incorrect -- they
assume that .gnu_debugaltlink is formatted like .gnu_debuglink.
However, it it is not. Instead, it consists of a file name followed
by the build-id -- no alignment, and the build-id is not a CRC.
Fixing this properly is a bit of a pain. But, because
separate_alt_debug_file_exists just has a FIXME for the build-id case,
I did not fix it properly. Instead I introduced a hack. This leaves
BFD working just as well as it did before my patch.
I'm willing to do something better here but I could use some guidance
as to what. It seems that the build-id code in BFD is largely punted
on.
FWIW gdb is the only user of bfd_get_alt_debug_link_info outside of
BFD itself.
I moved the build-id logic out of elfread.c and into a new file.
This seemed cleanest to me.
Writing a test case was a bit of a pain. I added a couple new
features to the DWARF assembler to handle this.
Built and regtested on x86-64 Fedora 18.
