2024-01-04Update year range in copyright notice of binutils filesAlan Modra1-1/+1
Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then updates copyright messages as follows: 1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights. 2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite files (which should have their copyright message removed). 3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes. 4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

the offset-to-entry mappings are allocated in blocks, which may become a bit wasteful in case there are extremely many small input files or sections. This made it so that a large project (Qt5WebEngine) didn't build anymore on x86 32bit due to address space limits. It barely fit into address space before the new string merging, and then got pushed over the limit by this. So instead of leaving the waste reallocate the maps to their final size once known. Now the link barely fits again. bfd/ * merge.c (record_section): Reallocate offset maps to their final size.
2023-11-09ld: Avoid overflows in string mergingMichael Matz1-4/+8
as the bug report shows we had an overflow in the test if hash table resizing is needed. Reorder the expression to avoid that. There's still a bug somewhere in gracefully handling failure in resizing (e.g. out of memory), but this pushes the boundary for that occurring somewhen into the future and immediately helps the reporter. bfd/ PR ld/31009 * merge.c (NEEDS_RESIZE): New macro avoiding overflow. (sec_merge_maybe_resize): Use it. (sec_merge_hash_insert): Ditto.

These were renamed from bfd_read and bfd_write back in 2001 when they lost an unnecessary parameter. Rename them back, and get rid of a few casts that are only needed without prototyped functions (K&R C).

* use power-of-two hash table * use better hash function (hashing 32bits at once and with better mixing characteristics) * use input-offset-to-entry maps instead of retaining full input contents for lookup time * don't reread SEC_MERGE section multiple times * care for cache behaviour for the hot lookup routine The overall effect is less usage in libz and much faster string merging itself. On a debug-info-enabled cc1 the effect at the time of this writing on the machine I used was going from 14400 perf samples to 9300 perf samples or from 3.7 seconds to 2.4 seconds, i.e. about 33% .

The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

qsort isn't guaranteed to be a stable sort, that is, elements comparing equal according to the comparison function may be reordered relative to their original ordering. Of course sometimes you may not care, but even in those cases it is good to force some ordering (ie. not have the comparison function return 0) so that linker output is reproducible over different libc qsort implementations. One way to make qsort stable (which the glibc manual incorrectly says is the only way) is to augment the elements being sorted with a monotonic counter of some kind, and use that counter as the final arbiter of ordering in the comparison function. Another way is to set up an array of pointers into the array of elements, first pointer to first element, second pointer to second element and so so, and sort the pointer array rather than the element array. Final arbiter in the comparison function then is the pointer difference. This works well with, for example, the symbol pointers returned by _bfd_elf_canonicalize_symtab which point into a symbol array. This patch fixes a few places where sorting by symbol pointers is appropriate, and adds comments where qsort stability is a non-issue. * elf-strtab.c (strrevcmp): Comment. * merge.c (strrevcmp): Likewise. * elf64-ppc.c (compare_symbols): Correct final pointer comparison. Not padding string merge section output to its alignment can cause failures of the S-record tests when input string merge sections are padded, since the ELF linker output for the single string section would shrink compared to the SREC linker output. That might result in following sections having different addresses. On the other hand, padding string merge section output when input string merge sections are *not* padded can also cause failures, in this case due to the ELF linker output for the string section being larger (due to padding) than the SREC linker output. It would be better to write a more robust test, but it is also nice to leave input unchanged when no string merges occur. PR 24311 * merge.c (merge_strings): Return secinfo. Don't pad section to alignment here. (_bfd_merge_sections): Pad section to alignment here, if input sections contributing to merged output all pad to alignment. Formatting.

I was looking at Debian bug #874674 again today, and think I might have spotted the problem. It appears that merge.c tries to cope with memory allocation failures in some circumstances, but doesn't quite manage to get everything right. This patch will make ld report memory allocation failures instead of silently not merging strings. * merge.c (merge_strings): Return FALSE on malloc failure. (_bfd_merge_sections): Return failures from record_section and merge_strings.
