2021-07-08elf: Add GNU_PROPERTY_1_NEEDED checkH.J. Lu1-0/+19
If GNU_PROPERTY_1_NEEDED_INDIRECT_EXTERN_ACCESS is set on any input relocatable files: 1. Don't generate copy relocations. 2. Turn off extern_protected_data since it implies GNU_PROPERTY_NO_COPY_ON_PROTECTED. 3. Treate reference to protected symbols with indirect external access as local. 4. Set GNU_PROPERTY_1_NEEDED_INDIRECT_EXTERN_ACCESS on output. 5. When generating executable, clear this bit when there are non-GOT or non-PLT relocations in input relocatable files without the bit set. 6. Add -z [no]indirect-extern-access to control indirect external access. bfd/ * elf-bfd (elf_obj_tdata): Add has_indirect_extern_access. (elf_has_indirect_extern_access): New. * elf-properties.c (_bfd_elf_parse_gnu_properties): Set elf_has_indirect_extern_access and elf_has_no_copy_on_protected when seeing GNU_PROPERTY_1_NEEDED_INDIRECT_EXTERN_ACCESS. 2021-05-28x86: Restore PC16 relocation overflow checkH.J. Lu1-8/+1
The x86-64 psABI has --- A program or object file using R_X86_64_8, R_X86_64_16, R_X86_64_PC16 or R_X86_64_PC8 relocations is not conformant to this ABI, these relocations are only added for documentation purposes. --- Since x86 PC16 relocations have been used for 16-bit programs in an ELF32 or ELF64 container, PC16 relocation should wrap-around in 16-bit address space. 2021-01-16ld/elf/x86: Don't compare IFUNC address in the shared objectH.J. Lu1-2/+1
On x86, glibc 2.33 starts to issue a fatal error message when calling IFUNC function defined in the unrelocated executable from a shared library. 1. 2020-10-09x86: Support GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V[234] markerH.J. Lu1-6/+58
GCC 11 supports -march=x86-64-v[234] to enable x86 micro-architecture ISA levels: https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=97250 Update GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_XXX macros: https://gitlab.com/x86-psABIs/x86-64-ABI/-/merge_requests/13 in x86 ELF binaries to indicate that micro-architecture ISA levels required to execute the binary: #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_NEEDED (GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_OR_LO + 2) #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_USED (GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_OR_AND_LO + 2) #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V2 (1U << 0) #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V3 (1U << 1) #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V4 (1U << 2) The previous GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_XXX macros are deprecated and renamed to GNU_PROPERTY_X86_COMPAT_2_ISA_1_XXX. In addition to EM_X86_64, GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V[234] marker can be used by ld.so to detect the x86-64-v4 shared library placed in an x86-64-v2 directory by mistake on an x86-64-v2 machine to avoid crashes on x86-64-v4 instructions. Add -z x86-64-v[234] linker command line option to mark x86-64-v[234] ISA level as needed. Also add #define GNU_PROPERTY_X86_FEATURE_2_MASK (1U << 11) for mask registers. bfd/ PR gas/26703 * elf-linker-x86.h (elf_linker_x86_params): Add isa_level. * elfxx-x86.c (_bfd_x86_elf_merge_gnu_properties): Merge GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_V[234]. 2020-02-19bfd_size_type to size_tAlan Modra1-1/+1
bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A 32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have something like symcount * sizeof (void *) when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is larger by far than that of a pointer. * aix386-core.c (aix386_core_file_p): Use size_t for "amt". * aout-target.h (object_p): Likewise. * aout-tic30.c (tic30_aout_object_p): Likewise. * aoutx.h 2019-09-19bfd_section_* macrosAlan Modra1-18/+13
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage in gas processing. bfd/ * bfd-in.h (bfd_get_section_name, bfd_get_section_vma), (bfd_get_section_lma, bfd_get_section_alignment), (bfd_get_section_size, bfd_get_section_flags), (bfd_get_section_userdata): Delete. 2019-03-21[BFD, AArch64, x86] Improve warning for --force-btiSudakshina Das1-0/+1
The AArch64 linker option to turn on BTI (--force-bti) warns in case there are input objects which have a missing GNU NOTE section for BTI. This patch is trying to improve the warnings that come out. In order to do so, I propose adding a new argument to elf_merge_gnu_properties and the backend function merge_gnu_properties. 2018-12-14elf: Add PT_GNU_PROPERTY segment typeH.J. Lu1-7/+3
Linkers group input note sections with the same name into one output note section with the same name. One output note section is placed in one PT_NOTE segment. New linkers merge all input .note.gnu.property sections into one output .note.gnu.property section with a single NT_GNU_PROPERTY_TYPE_0 note in a single PT_NOTE segment. Since older linkers treat input .note.gnu.property section as a generic note section and just concatenate all input .note.gnu.property sections into one output .note.gnu.property section without merging them, we may see one or more NT_GNU_PROPERTY_TYPE_0 notes in PT_NOTE segment, which are invalid. GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_VALID was defined to address this issue such that linker sets the bit for non-relocatable outputs. But it isn't sufficient: 1. It doesn't cover generic properties. 2. When -mx86-used-note=yes is passed to x86 assembler, the GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_VALID bit is set in GNU_PROPERTY_X86_ISA_1_USED property in object file and older linkers generate invalid NT_GNU_PROPERTY_TYPE_0 notes with the GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_VALID bit set. I am proposing the following changes: 1. Add PT_GNU_PROPERTY segment type: # define PT_GNU_PROPERTY (PT_LOOS + 0x474e553) which covers .note.gnu.property section. 2. Remove GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_VALID. bfd/ PR ld/23900 * elf.c (get_program_header_size): Add a PT_GNU_PROPERTY segment for NOTE_GNU_PROPERTY_SECTION_NAME. 2018-08-24x86: Add GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_VALIDH.J. Lu1-5/+12
The older linker treats .note.gnu.property section as a generic note and just concatenates all .note.gnu.property sections from the input to the output. On CET-enabled OS, the output of the older linker is marked as CET enabled, but in fact, it is not CET enabled and it crashes on CET-enabled machines. This patch defines GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_VALID. Linker is updated to set the GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_VALID bit in GNU property note for non-relocatable output to differentiate outputs from the older linker. bfd/ * elfxx-x86.c (_bfd_x86_elf_parse_gnu_properties): Mask out the GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_VALID bit. (_bfd_x86_elf_link_fixup_gnu_properties): Set the GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_VALID bit for non-relocatable output. binutils/ * readelf.c (print_gnu_property_note): Check the GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_VALID bit for invalid GNU property note. include/ * elf/common.h (GNU_PROPERTY_X86_UINT32_VALID): New.
2018-08-17x86: Remove empty X86_FEATURE_1_AND propertyH.J. Lu1-0/+28
There is no need to generate .note.gnu.property section with empty X86_FEATURE_1_AND property.
