Section header isn't mandatory on ELF executable nor shared library.
This patch adds a new linker option, -z nosectionheader, to omit ELF
section header, a new objcopy and strip option, --strip-section-headers,
to remove ELF section headers.

doc/bfdint.texi and comments in the aout and som code about this
function are just wrong, and its name is not very apt. Better would
be _bfd_mostly_destroy, and we certainly should not be saying anything
about the possibility of later recreating anything lost by this
function. What's more, if _bfd_free_cached_info is called when
creating an archive map to reduce memory usage by throwing away
symbols, the target _close_and_cleanup function won't have access to
tdata or section bfd_user_data to tidy memory. This means most of the
target _close_and_cleanup function won't do anything, and therefore
sometimes will result in memory leaks.
This patch fixes the documentation problems and moves most of the
target _close_and_cleanup code to target _bfd_free_cached_info.
Another notable change is that bfd_generic_bfd_free_cached_info is now
defined as _bfd_free_cached_info rather than _bfd_bool_bfd_true,
ie. the default now frees objalloc memory.

The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf
on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and
embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match.

PR29397 PR29563: Add new configure option --with-zstd which defaults to
auto. If pkgconfig/libzstd.pc is found, define HAVE_ZSTD and support
zstd compressed debug sections for most tools.
* bfd: for addr2line, objdump --dwarf, gdb, etc
* gas: support --compress-debug-sections=zstd
* ld: support ELFCOMPRESS_ZSTD input and --compress-debug-sections=zstd
* objcopy: support ELFCOMPRESS_ZSTD input for
--decompress-debug-sections and --compress-debug-sections=zstd
* gdb: support ELFCOMPRESS_ZSTD input. The bfd change references zstd
symbols, so gdb has to link against -lzstd in this patch.
If zstd is not supported, ELFCOMPRESS_ZSTD input triggers an error. We
can avoid HAVE_ZSTD if binutils-gdb imports zstd/ like zlib/, but this
is too heavyweight, so don't do it for now.

bfd_find_nearest_line_with_alt functions like bfd_find_nearest_line with
the addition of a parameter for specifying the filename of a supplementary
debug file such as one referenced by .gnu_debugaltlink or .debug_sup.
This patch focuses on implementing bfd_find_nearest_line_with_alt
support for ELF/DWARF2 .gnu_debugaltlink. For other targets this
function simply sets the invalid_operation bfd_error.

Currently, on 32-bit and 64-bit ARM, it seems that ld generates p_align
values of 0x10000 even if no section alignment is greater than 0x1000.
The issue is more general and probably affects other targets with multiple
page sizes.
While file layout absolutely must take 64K page size into account, that
does not have to be reflected in the p_align value. If running on a 64K
kernel, the file will be loaded at a 64K page boundary by necessity. On
a 4K kernel, 64K alignment is not needed.
The glibc loader has been fixed to honor p_align:
https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=28676
similar to kernel:
commit ce81bb256a224259ab686742a6284930cbe4f1fa
Author: Chris Kennelly <ckennelly@google.com>
Date: Thu Oct 15 20:12:32 2020 -0700
fs/binfmt_elf: use PT_LOAD p_align values for suitable start address
This means that on 4K kernels, we will start to do extra work for 64K
p_align, but this pointless for pretty much all binaries (whose section
alignment rarely exceeds 16).
The minimum page size is used, instead of the maximum section alignment
due to this glibc bug:
https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=28688
It has been fixed in glibc 2.35. But linker output must work on existing
glibc binaries.
1. Set p_align to the minimum page size while laying out segments aligning
to the maximum page size or section alignment. The run-time loader can
align segments to the minimum page size or above, depending on system page
size.
2. If -z max-page-size=NNN is used, p_align will be set to the maximum
page size or the largest section alignment.
3. If a section requires alignment higher than the minimum page size,
don't set p_align to the minimum page size.
4. If a section requires alignment higher than the maximum page size,
set p_align to the section alignment.
5. For objcopy, when the minimum page size != the maximum page size,
p_align may be set to the minimum page size while segments are aligned
to the maximum page size. In this case, the input p_align will be
ignored and the maximum page size will be used to align the ouput
segments.
6. Update linker to disallow the common page size > the maximum page size.
7. Update linker to avoid the common page size > the maximum page size.
8. Adjust pru_irq_map-1.d to expect p_align == sh_addralign:

The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all
the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with
--enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking
out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.
The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit
breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

For ELF targets, section symbols are required only for relocations.
With -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections, there can be many unused
section symbols. Sizes of libstdc++.a on Linux/x86-64 in GCC 11 are
With unused section symbols : 39411698 bytes
Without unused section symbols: 39227002 bytes
The unused section symbols in libstdc++.a occupy more than 180 KB.
Add BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED to indicate if a section symbol should be
included in the symbol table. The BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED should be set
if the section symbol is used for relocation or the section symbol is
always included in the symbol table.
Add keep_unused_section_symbols to bfd_target to indicate if unused
section symbols should be kept. If TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS
is defined as FALSE, unused ection symbols will be removed.
Tested on Linux/x86. Other ELF backends need to:
1. Define TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS to FALSE.
2. Mark used section symbols in assembler backend.
3. Remove unused section symbols from expected assembler and linker
outputs.

elfNN_bed was made writable as an expedient means of communicating
ld -z max-page-size and ld -z common-page-size values to BFD linker
code, and even for objcopy to communicate segment alignment between
copy_private_bfd_data, rewrite_elf_program_header and
assign_file_positions_for_load_sections. Some time later elfNN_bed
elf_osabi was written by gas. It turns out none of these
modifications to elfNN_bed was necessary, so make it const again.

Correct ELF linker code so as to set the `sh_info' value of the static
symbol table section according to the section symbols vs other symbols
split where required by the selection of the IRIX compatibility mode for
MIPS target. Add a `elf_backend_elfsym_local_is_section' hook for that
purpose, returning TRUE if it is only STB_LOCAL/STT_SECTION symbols that
are to be considered local for the purpose of this split rather than all
STB_LOCAL symbols.
We do it already in generic ELF code, and have done it since 1993, with
the `elf_backend_sym_is_global' hook, affecting GAS and `objcopy', so
these tools produce correct ELF output in the IRIX compatibility mode,
however if such output is fed as input to `ld -r', then the linker's
output is no longer valid for that mode. The relevant changes to
generic ELF code are:
commit 062189c6eab72c7ba1bab1cf30fdb27d67a7d668
Author: Ian Lance Taylor <ian@airs.com>
Date: Thu Nov 18 17:12:47 1993 +0000
and:
commit 6e07e54f1b347f885cc6c021c3fd912c79bdaf55
Author: Ian Lance Taylor <ian@airs.com>
Date: Thu Jan 6 20:01:42 1994 +0000
(split across two GIT commits likely due to repository conversion
peculiarities).
The `elf_backend_sym_is_global' hook however operates on BFD rather than
ELF symbols, making it unsuitable for the ELF linker as the linker does
not convert any symbol tables processed into the BFD format. Converting
the hook to operate on ELF symbols would in principle be possible, but
it would still require a considerable rewrite of `bfd_elf_final_link' to
adapt to the interface.
Therefore, especially given that no new use for the IRIX compatibility
mode is expected, minimize changes made to the ELF linker code and just
add an entirely new hook, and wire it in the o32 and n32 MIPS backends
accordingly; the n64 backend never uses the IRIX compatibility mode.
Since we have no coverage here at all add suitable GAS, LD and `objcopy'
test cases to the relevant testsuites to keep these tools consistently
verified.

ELF size_dynamic_sections is called by the ELF backend linker after all
the linker input files have been seen but before the section sizes have
been set. After the sections sizes have been set, target-specific,
global optimizations may make some dynamic sections zero-sized if they
are no longer needed.
Add ELF strip_zero_sized_dynamic_sections so that ELF backend linker can
strip zero-sized dynamic sections after the sections sizes have been set.

This patch is a reimplementation of [1] which was submitted in 2015 by
Neil Schellenberger. Copyright issue was sorted out [2] last year.
It proposed a new section (.gnu.xhash) and related dynamic tag
(DT_GNU_XHASH). The new section would be virtually identical to the
existing .gnu.hash except for the translation table (xlat) which would
contain correct MIPS .dynsym indexes corresponding to the hashvals in
chains. This is because MIPS ABI imposes a different ordering on the
dynsyms than the one expected by the .gnu.hash section. Another addition
would be a leading word (ngnusyms) which would contain the number of
entries in the translation table.
In this patch, the new section name and dynamic tag are changed to
reflect the fact that the section should be treated as MIPS-specific
(.MIPS.xhash and DT_MIPS_XHASH).
This patch addresses the alignment issue as reported in [3], which is
caused by the leading word added to the .MIPS.xhash section. Leading word
is removed in this patch, and the number of entries in the translation
table is now calculated using DT_MIPS_SYMTABNO dynamic tag (this is
addressed by the corresponding glibc patch).
Suggestions on coding style in [4] were taken into account. Existing
GNU hash testcase was covered, and another one was added in the MIPS
part of the testsuite.
The other major change is reserving MIPS ABI version 5 for .MIPS.xhash,
marking the need of support for .MIPS.xhash in the dynamic linker (again,
addressed in the corresponding glibc patch). This is something which I
am not sure of, especially after reading [5]. I am confused on whether
this ABI version is reserved for IFUNC, or it can be used for this
purpose.
Already mentioned glibc patch is submitted at:

max-page-size only matters for demand paged executables or shared
libraries, and the ideal size is the largest value used by your
operating system. Values larger than necessary just waste file space
and memory. common-page-size also affects file and memory size,
trading a possible small increase in file size for a decrease in
memory size when the operating system is using a common-page-size
page. With a powerpc max-page-size of 64k and common-page-size of 4k
many executables will use no more memory pages when the system page
size is 4k than an executable linked with -z max-page-size=0x1000,
yet will still run on a system using 64k pages. However, when running
on a system using 64k pages relro protection will not be completely
effective.
Due to the relro problem, powerpc binutils has been using a default
common-page-size of 64k since 2014-12-18 (git commit 04c6a44c7),
leading to complaints about increased file and memory sizes. People
not using relro do have a valid reason to complain..
So this patch introduces an extra back-end value to use as the default
for common-page-size when generating relro executables, and enables
the support for powerpc. Non relro executables will now be generated

This patch defines a bunch of new functions to use in the BFD target
structs rather than casting bfd_false or bfd_true and similar stub
functions. I've also renamed the stub functions to reflect their
parameters and put "error" in the name if they set bfd_error. The
latter change is important since there were quite a few uses of
bfd_false where setting bfd_error was inappropriate, for example in
elf_backend_allow_non_load_phdr and is_target_special_symbol.

extra casts.
GCC v8 issues warnings about mis-matching casts of function pointers.
A previous patch tried to fix this problem by adding new dummy functions
which accepted a variable number of arguments. But this introduces serious
problems when compiled with other versions of gcc, (notably gcc 4.4). This
patch reverts that previous solution and instead adds extra casts (to
function types without a parameter list).
For more details see: https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2018-02/msg00198.html

For all ELF targers, call check_relocs after opening all inputs and
garbage collection. Since the symbol resolution is known, check_relocs
can be simplified. Also garbage collection doesn't need to undo what
check_relocs has done for symbols which have been garbage collected.
Since ELF targets never see the removed sections, gc_sweep_hook can be
removed from elf_backend_data and we can avoid GOT/PLT with garbage
collection now.
Set link_info.check_relocs_after_open_input to TRUE for all linker
targets which use ELF linker and update garbage collection tests to
remove unused GOT section.
ldemul_after_check_relocs is added for powerpc to support --secure-plt,
--bss-plt and --sdata-got.
Tested natively without regressions on i686, x86-64 and x32. Tested

Fix commit 70a38d42c5b3 ("New entry points for writing Linux NT_PRPSINFO
notes."), <https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2013-02/msg00023.html>,
and handle both variants of the 64-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note across
all targets.
The 64-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note matches the 64-bit kernel structure,
defined as follows:
(gdb) ptype struct elf_prpsinfo
type = struct elf_prpsinfo {
char pr_state;
char pr_sname;
char pr_zomb;
char pr_nice;
unsigned long pr_flag;
__kernel_uid_t pr_uid;
__kernel_gid_t pr_gid;
pid_t pr_pid;
pid_t pr_ppid;
pid_t pr_pgrp;
pid_t pr_sid;
char pr_fname[16];
char pr_psargs[80];
}
(gdb)
where the individual data types of most members are the same across all
64-bit Linux ports, with the exception of `__kernel_uid_t' and
`__kernel_gid_t'. These are defined in <asm-generic/posix_types.h> as
32-bit `unsigned int' by default, however overridden as 16-bit `unsigned
short' in port-specific <asm/posix_types.h> for the SuperH target.
The default is already handled, as from the commit referred. Add the
other variant then and provide a backend flag to switch between the two
cases possible, with the 32-bit one being the default and the 16-bit one
explicitly selected. Set the flag in the SuperH target backend. This
arrangement is analogous to how the 32-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note is
handled.

both variants of the 32-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note across all targets.
The 32-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note matches the 32-bit kernel structure,
defined as follows:
(gdb) ptype struct elf_prpsinfo
type = struct elf_prpsinfo {
char pr_state;
char pr_sname;
char pr_zomb;
char pr_nice;
unsigned long pr_flag;
__kernel_uid_t pr_uid;
__kernel_gid_t pr_gid;
pid_t pr_pid;
pid_t pr_ppid;
pid_t pr_pgrp;
pid_t pr_sid;
char pr_fname[16];
char pr_psargs[80];
}
(gdb)
where the individual data types of most members are the same across all
32-bit Linux ports, with the exception of `__kernel_uid_t' and
`__kernel_gid_t'. These are defined in <asm-generic/posix_types.h> as
32-bit `unsigned int' by default, however overridden as 16-bit `unsigned
short' in port-specific <asm/posix_types.h> for a few targets, mostly
earlier ports of Linux, specifically: ARM, CRIS, FR-V, M32R, m68k,
MN10300/AM33, s390, SuperH, SPARC and i386.
The default is the same as the PowerPC variant already handled, as from
the commits referred. Make the special PowerPC case generic then,
removing the GDB part, and provide a backend flag to switch between the
two cases possible, with the 32-bit one being the default and the 16-bit
one explicitly selected. Set the flag in the target backends affected.

This arranges for __start and __stop symbols to be defined before
garbage collection, for all target formats. That should allow the
COFF and PE --gc-sections to keep a singleton orphan input section,
a feature lost by 2017-06-13 commit cbd0eecf26. The fancier ELF
treatment of keeping all input sections associated with a __start or
__stop symbol, from 2015-10-23 commit 1cce69b9dc, is retained.
.startof. and .sizeof. symbols are deliberately not defined before
garbage collection, so these won't affect garbage collection of
sections.
The patch also ensures __start, __stop, .startof. and .sizeof. symbols
are defined before target size_dynamic_sections is called, albeit
with a preliminary value, so that target code doesn't need to cope
with a symbol changing from undefined at size_dynamic_sections to
defined at relocate_section.
Also, a number of problems with the testcases have been fixed.

This patch adds a new entry point to the BFD_JUMP_TABLE_RELOCS. The
previous common implementation `bfd_set_reloc', in bfd/bfd.c, has been
moved to bfd/reloc.c with the name `_bfd_generic_set_reloc', and all
BFD targets has been adapted to use it.
This patch doesn't introduce any change on functionality, but prepares
the ground for further work.

Complement commit e17b0c351f0b ("MIPS/BFD: Respect the ELF gABI dynamic
symbol table sort requirement") and correct an inconsistency in dynamic
symbol accounting data causing an assertion failure in the MIPS backend:
ld: BFD (GNU Binutils) 2.28.51.20170330 assertion fail
../../binutils-gdb/bfd/elfxx-mips.c:3860
in the course of making a GOT entry in a static binary to satisfy a GOT
relocation present in input, due to the local dynamic symbol count not
having been established.
To do so let backends request `_bfd_elf_link_renumber_dynsyms' to be
always called, rather than where a dynamic binary is linked only, and
then make this request in the MIPS backend.

From .note.gnu.property section in each ELF input, we build a list of
GNU properties if .note.gnu.property section isn't corrupt. The unknown
properties are ignored. All property lists in relocatable inputs are
merged into an output property list. When -z stack-size=N is used and

Variables defined in shared libraries are copied into an executable's
.bss section when code in the executable is non-PIC and thus would
require dynamic text relocations to access the variable directly in
the shared library. Recent x86 toolchains also copy variables into
the executable to gain a small speed improvement.
The problem is that if the variable was originally read-only, the copy
in .bss is writable, potentially opening a security hole. This patch
cures that problem by putting the copy in a section that becomes
read-only after ld.so relocation, provided -z relro is in force.
The patch also fixes a microblaze linker segfault on attempting to
use dynamic bss variables.

Most BFD linker functions take a bfd_link_info param, which reinforces
the fact that they are linker functions and allow access to linker
callbacks, eg. einfo for printing errors. I was going to use einfo
for --fatal-warnings support before I decided a better way was the
patch commit 4519d071.
