2018-02-16Remove bfd stub function casts.Alan Modra1-6/+15
This patch defines a bunch of new functions to use in the BFD target structs rather than casting bfd_false or bfd_true and similar stub functions. I've also renamed the stub functions to reflect their parameters and put "error" in the name if they set bfd_error. The latter change is important since there were quite a few uses of bfd_false where setting bfd_error was inappropriate, for example in elf_backend_allow_non_load_phdr and is_target_special_symbol. * libbfd.c (_bfd_bool_bfd_false_error): Rename from bfd_false. 2018-02-13PR22836, "-r -s" doesn't work with -g3 using GCC 7Alan Modra1-0/+7

2018-02-01Fix compile time warnings building the binutils with clang.Simon Marchi1-2/+2
bfdI would like to fix instances of the following warning, when building with clang with no special CFLAGS other than -g3 -O0. /home/emaisin/src/binutils-gdb/bfd/elflink.c:5425:45: error: performing pointer arithmetic on a null pointer has undefined behavior [-Werror,-Wnull-pointer-arithmetic] return (struct elf_link_hash_entry *) 0 - 1; ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ^ Replacing those with "(struct elf_link_hash_entry *) -1" gets rid of the warning. I wanted to check that it didn't change the resulting code, so I tried to build this: $ cat test.c int *before() { return (int *) 0 - 1; } int *after() { return (int *) - 1; } $ gcc -c test.c -g $ objdump -d test.o test.o: file format elf64-x86-64 Disassembly of section .text: 0000000000000000 <before>: 0: 55 push %rbp 1: 48 89 e5 mov %rsp,%rbp 4: 48 c7 c0 fc ff ff ff mov $0xfffffffffffffffc,%rax b: 5d pop %rbp c: c3 retq 000000000000000d <after>: d: 55 push %rbp e: 48 89 e5 mov %rsp,%rbp 11: 48 c7 c0 ff ff ff ff mov $0xffffffffffffffff,%rax 18: 5d pop %rbp 19: c3 retq This shows that the previous code doesn't actually return -1 as the function documentation says, but the new one does, so it's kind of a bugfix. bfd * elf64-ppc.c (ppc64_elf_archive_symbol_lookup): Avoid pointer arithmetic on NULL pointer. * elflink.c (_bfd_elf_archive_symbol_lookup, elf_link_add_archive_symbols): Likewise. ld * ldexp.c (fold_name, exp_fold_tree_1): Avoid pointer arithmetic on NULL pointer.

2018-01-26Define __start/__stop symbols when there is only a dynamic defAlan Modra1-1/+1
This patch fixes a case where a user had a C-representable named section in both the executable and shared libraries, and of course wanted the size of the local section in the executable, not the dynamic section. It does mean that __start and __stop symbols don't behave exactly like PROVIDEd symbols, but I think that's a reasonable difference particularly since this is the way they used to behave. * elflink.c (bfd_elf_define_start_stop): Override symbols when they are defined dynamically.
2018-01-11Ignore dynamic references on forced local symbolsH.J. Lu1-1/+1

2017-12-19PR22626, invalid dynindx used for dynamic relocs against section symsAlan Modra1-8/+14
_bfd_elf_link_renumber_dynsyms is called twice by the linker. The first call in bfd_elf_size_dynamic_sections is just to answer the question as to whether there are there any dynamic symbols. The second call in bfd_elf_size_dynsym_hash_dynstr sets the st_shndx value that dynamic symbols will have. strip_excluded_output_sections is called between these two calls. So sections seen on the first _bfd_elf_link_renumber_dynsyms pass might differ from those seen on the second pass. Unfortunately, that can result in a stripped section's dynamic symbol being assigned a dynindx on the first pass but not corrected to the final value (of zero, ie. not dynamic) on the second pass. PowerPC, x86, mips, and most other targets that emit dynamic section symbols, just test that section symbol dynindx is non-zero before using a given section symbol in dynamic relocations. This patch prevents _bfd_elf_link_renumber_dynsyms from setting any section symbol dynindx on the first pass. PR 22626 * elflink.c (_bfd_elf_link_renumber_dynsyms): Don't set section dynindx when section_sym_count is NULL. (bfd_elf_size_dynamic_sections): Pass NULL section_sym_count to preliminary _bfd_elf_link_renumber_dynsyms call.

2017-11-28PR22471, undefined reference to linker-defined symbolsAlan Modra1-1/+6
This patch processes linker script assignment statements before ld opens DT_NEEDED libraries, in order to define symbols like __bss_start that might also be defined by a library, falsely triggering an error about "DSO missing from command line". The initial value won't be correct when assigning a symbol from dot, and I make no attempt to handle all expressions. For example, an assignment like "_start_foo = ADDR (.foo)" isn't valid until sections are laid out, so won't define _start_foo early. What's here should be enough for most common scripts, and hopefully won't perturb fragile scripts. bfd/ PR 22471 * elflink.c (_bfd_elf_merge_symbol): Allow weak symbols to override early passes over linker script symbols. * linker.c (_bfd_generic_link_add_one_symbol): Allow symbols to override early passes over linker script symbols. Clear ldscript_def on symbol definitions. ld/ PR 22471 * ldexp.c (struct definedness_hash_entry): Delete "by_script". Make "iteration" an 8-bit field, and update mask in all uses. Test ldscript_def. (fold_name <NAME>): Return a result for first phase. * ldlang.c (open_input_bfds): Process all assignments, not just defsym. 2017-11-23Rename u.weakdef and make it a circular listAlan Modra1-40/+49
This makes the elf_link_hash_entry weakdef field, currently used to point from a weak symbol to a strong alias, a circular list so that all aliases can be found from any of them. A new flag, is_weakalias, distinguishes the weak symbol from a strong alias, and is used in all places where we currently test u.weakdef != NULL. With the original u.weakdef handling it was possible to have two or more weak symbols pointing via u.weakdef to a strong definition. Obviously that situation can't map to a circular list; One or more of the weak symbols must point at another weak alias rather than the strong definition. To handle that, I've added an accessor function to return the strong definition. * elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_entry): Add is_weakalias. Rename u.weakdef to u.alias and update comment. 2017-11-12weakdef list handlingAlan Modra1-4/+4
The existing code allowed common and indirect symbols to pass an assert, but then read root.u.def which is not valid for anything besides defined and weakdef symbols. The garbage root.u.def.section pointer read can't possibly match pointers stored at the same location for indirect and common symbols, so we would always have left u.weakdef NULL. * elflink.c (elf_link_add_object_symbols): Ignore anything but defined and defweak symbols when setting up weakdefs.
2017-10-30relocs_compatible test for gc-sectionsAlan Modra1-0/+2
I noticed when looking at pr22300 that before calling check_relocs we have an elf_object_id test (added for pr11933) as well as the relocs_compatible test. I believe backend gc_mark_hook and gc_sweep_hook ought to be protected similarly from being confused by unexpected relocations (for example, both elf64-ppc.c and elf32-ppc.c use _bfd_elf_relocs_compatible, so I think it would be possible for the ppc64 gc_mark_hook to be presented with a ppc32 relocatable object). * elflink.c (elf_gc_sweep): Test elf_object_id in addition to relocs_compatible. 2017-10-28PR22300, Abort in elf32_hppa_relocate_section building polymlAlan Modra1-5/+0
polyml produces object files with the wrong OS/ABI for hppa-linux. This, along with the fact that elf32-hppa.c is using the strictest backend relocs_compatible, results in wrong merging of ELF symbols. So, remove the relocs_compatible check in _bfd_elf_merge_symbol. _bfd_elf_merge_symbol is only called nowadays from within blocks protected by is_elf_hash_table, so "we are doing an ELF link" as the removed comment says, is true. Also relax relocs_compatible for hppa and powerpc. relocs_compatible is used for more than just merging symbols, as the name suggests. This allows objects that are in fact reasonably compatible to be linked. PR 22300 * elflink.c (_bfd_elf_merge_symbol): Remove relocs_compatible check. * elf32-hppa.c (elf_backend_relocs_compatible): Define. * elf32-ppc.c (elf_backend_relocs_compatible): Define. * elf64-ppc.c (elf_backend_relocs_compatible): Define.
2017-10-24[BFD][PR21703]Override the new defined symbol with the old normal symbol ↵Renlin Li1-0/+13
when --allow-multiple-definition is provided. The behavior of _bfd_elf_merge_symbol and _bfd_generic_link_add_one_symbol is inconsistent. In multiple definition case, _bfd_elf_merge_symbol decided to override the old symbol definition with the new defintion, (size, type, target data) In _bfd_generic_link_add_one_symbol, it simply return without doing anything because of allow-multiple-definition is provided. This leaves the symbol in a wrong state. Here, following the documentation, I made this patch to force the old definition override the new definition if the old symbol is not dynamic or weak. 2017-10-16ELF: Call check_relocs after opening all inputsH.J. Lu1-37/+0
For all ELF targers, call check_relocs after opening all inputs and garbage collection. Since the symbol resolution is known, check_relocs can be simplified. Also garbage collection doesn't need to undo what check_relocs has done for symbols which have been garbage collected. Since ELF targets never see the removed sections, gc_sweep_hook can be removed from elf_backend_data and we can avoid GOT/PLT with garbage collection now. Set link_info.check_relocs_after_open_input to TRUE for all linker targets which use ELF linker and update garbage collection tests to remove unused GOT section. ldemul_after_check_relocs is added for powerpc to support --secure-plt, --bss-plt and --sdata-got. 2017-09-19PR22150, ld keeps a version reference for gc'd symbolsAlan Modra1-117/+110
elf_gc_sweep_symbol should run after verdefs are calculated, since the verdef code creates symbols for the versions. However, elf_gc_sweep_symbol needs to run before verrefs so as to not emit useless verrefs for symbols that are gc'd. I've also removed a _bfd_elf_link_renumber_dynsyms calls added by Maciej after I fussed about it when reviewing. On further examination the call appears to be unnecessary. Looking at renumber_dynsyms also made me realize that the test to exclude .gnu.version has been wrong since 2016-04-26 (git commit d5486c4372), so fix that too. 2017-08-06Treat common symbol as undefined for --no-define-commonH.J. Lu1-0/+5
When --no-define-common is used to build shared library, treat common symbol as undefined so that common symbols that are referenced from a shared library to be assigned addresses only in the main program. This eliminates the unused duplicate space in the shared library, and also prevents any possible confusion over resolving to the wrong duplicate when there are many dynamic modules with specialized search paths for runtime symbol resolution. --no-define-common is only allowed when building a shared library. bfd/ PR ld/21903: * elflink.c (elf_link_add_object_symbols): Treat common symbol as undefined for --no-define-common. include/ PR ld/21903: * bfdlink.h (bfd_link_info): Add inhibit_common_definition. ld/ PR ld/21903: * ld.h (command_line): Remove inhibit_common_definition. * ldgram.y: Replace command_line.inhibit_common_definition with link_info.inhibit_common_definition. * ldlang.c (lang_common): Likewise. * lexsup.c (parse_args): Likewise. * ldmain.c (main): Only allow --no-define-common with -shared. * testsuite/ld-elf/pr21903.s: New file. * testsuite/ld-elf/pr21903a.d: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-elf/pr21903b.d: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-elf/pr21903c.d: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-elf/pr21903d.d: Likewise. * testsuite/ld-elf/pr21903e.d: Likewise.

2017-07-03Support %Lx, %Lu, %Ld in _bfd_error_handler formatAlan Modra1-14/+10
One way to print 64-bit bfd_vma or bfd_size_type values on 32-bit hosts is to cast the value to long long and use the 'll' modifier in printf format strings. However, that's awkward because we also support the Microsoft C library printf that uses 'I64' as a modifier instead, and having variants of translated strings would not endear us to the translation project. So, rewrite the 'll' modifier in _doprint for Microsoft. Even with that capability it's not so nice for 32-bit code to need casts to long long, so this patch makes 'L' a modifier for bfd_vma rather than an alias for 'll'. I've then used the new 'L' modifier to fix selected format strings. * bfd.c (_doprnt): Rewrite "ll" and "L" modifiers to "I64" for __MSVCRT__. Support "L" modifier for bfd_vma. 2017-06-16Rewrite __start and __stop symbol handlingAlan Modra1-5/+25
This arranges for __start and __stop symbols to be defined before garbage collection, for all target formats. That should allow the COFF and PE --gc-sections to keep a singleton orphan input section, a feature lost by 2017-06-13 commit cbd0eecf26. The fancier ELF treatment of keeping all input sections associated with a __start or __stop symbol, from 2015-10-23 commit 1cce69b9dc, is retained. .startof. and .sizeof. symbols are deliberately not defined before garbage collection, so these won't affect garbage collection of sections. The patch also ensures __start, __stop, .startof. and .sizeof. symbols are defined before target size_dynamic_sections is called, albeit with a preliminary value, so that target code doesn't need to cope with a symbol changing from undefined at size_dynamic_sections to defined at relocate_section. Also, a number of problems with the testcases have been fixed. 2017-06-13Always define referenced __start_SECNAME/__stop_SECNAMEH.J. Lu1-82/+36
Currently, linker will define __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME symbols only for orphaned sections. However, during garbage collection, ELF linker marks all sections with references to __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME symbols as used even when section SECNAME isn't an orphaned section and linker won't define __start_SECNAME nor __stop_SECNAME. And ELF linker stores the first input section whose name matches __start_SECNAME or __stop_SECNAME in u.undef.section for garbage collection. If these symbols are provided in linker script, u.undef.section is set to the section where they will defined by linker script, which leads to the incorrect output. This patch changes linker to always define referenced __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME if the input section name is the same as the output section name, which is always true for orphaned sections, and SECNAME is a C identifier. Also __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME symbols are marked as hidden by ELF linker so that __start_SECNAME and __stop_SECNAME symbols for section SECNAME in different modules are unique. For garbage collection, ELF linker stores the first matched input section in the unused vtable field. bfd/ PR ld/20022 PR ld/21557 PR ld/21562 PR ld/21571 * elf-bfd.h (elf_link_hash_entry): Add start_stop. 2017-06-06ld: Allow section groups to be resolved as part of a relocatable linkAndrew Burgess1-2/+4
This commit adds a new linker feature: the ability to resolve section groups as part of a relocatable link. Currently section groups are automatically resolved when performing a final link, and are carried through when performing a relocatable link. By carried through this means that one copy of each section group (from all the copies that might be found in all the input files) is placed into the output file. Sections that are part of a section group will not match input section specifiers within a linker script and are forcibly kept as separate sections. There is a slight resemblance between section groups and common section. Like section groups, common sections are carried through when performing a relocatable link, and resolved (allocated actual space) only at final link time. However, with common sections there is an ability to force the linker to allocate space for the common sections when performing a relocatable link, there's currently no such ability for section groups. This commit adds such a mechanism. This new facility can be accessed in two ways, first there's a command line switch --force-group-allocation, second, there's a new linker script command FORCE_GROUP_ALLOCATION. If one of these is used when performing a relocatable link then the linker will resolve the section groups as though it were performing a final link, the section group will be deleted, and the members of the group will be placed like normal input sections. If there are multiple copies of the group (from multiple input files) then only one copy of the group members will be placed, the duplicate copies will be discarded. Unlike common sections that have the --no-define-common command line flag, and INHIBIT_COMMON_ALLOCATION linker script command there is no way to prevent group resolution during a final link, this is because the ELF gABI specifically prohibits the presence of SHT_GROUP sections in a fully linked executable. However, the code as written should make adding such a feature trivial, setting the new resolve_section_groups flag to false during a final link should work as you'd expect. bfd/ChangeLog: * elf.c (_bfd_elf_make_section_from_shdr): Don't initially mark SEC_GROUP sections as SEC_EXCLUDE. 2017-06-06ELF/BFD: Hold the number of internal static relocs in `->reloc_count'Maciej W. Rozycki1-10/+8
Correct a commit e5713223cbc1 ("MIPS/BFD: For n64 hold the number of internal relocs in `->reloc_count'") regression and change internal relocation handling in the generic ELF BFD linker code such that, except in the presence of R_SPARC_OLO10 relocations, a section's `reloc_count' holds the number of internal rather than external relocations, making the handling more consistent between GAS, which sets `->reloc_count' with a call to `bfd_set_reloc', and LD, which sets `->reloc_count' as it reads input sections. The handling of dynamic relocations remains unchanged and they continue holding the number of external relocations in `->reloc_count'; they are also not converted to the internal form except in `elf_link_sort_relocs' (which does not handle the general, i.e. non-n64-MIPS case of composed relocations correctly as per the ELF gABI, though it does not seem to matter for the targets we currently support). The n64 MIPS backend is the only one with `int_rels_per_ext_rel' set to non-one, and consequently the change is trivial for all the remaining backends and targets. bfd/ * elf-bfd.h (RELOC_AGAINST_DISCARDED_SECTION): Subtract `count' from `reloc_count' rather than decrementing it. * elf.c (bfd_section_from_shdr): Multiply the adjustment to `reloc_count' by `int_rels_per_ext_rel'. * elf32-score.c (score_elf_final_link_relocate): Do not multiply `reloc_count' by `int_rels_per_ext_rel' for last relocation entry determination. 2017-05-19garbage collect debug sections when no alloc sections are keptAlan Modra1-3/+5
The pr20882 testcase fails on a number of targets that add attribute or note sections to object files, and the default linker script says those sections should be kept. 2017-05-16non_ir_ref_dynamicAlan Modra1-5/+6
dynamic_ref_after_ir_def is a little odd compared to other symbol flags in that as the name suggests, it is set only for certain references after a definition. It turns out that setting a flag for any non-ir reference from a dynamic object can be used to solve the problem for which this flag was invented, which I think is a cleaner. 2017-05-08Make import libraries relocatable objectsThomas Preud'homme1-1/+2
For ELF targets --out-implib currently generates an executable file (e_type is ET_EXEC) despite the file being expected to be linked against some other object file to make an executable later. It seems therefore more sensible to make the import library a relocatable object file (e_type set to ET_REL). Incidentally, as dicted by requirement 8 of "ARM v8-M Security Extensions: Requirements on Development Tools" (document ARM-ECM-0359818) version 1.0, import libraries generated when using --cmse-implib *must* be relocatable object file so this commit also adds an assert there in case the type of ELF import library is changed again in the future. 2017-05-08 Thomas Preud'homme <thomas.preudhomme@arm.com> bfd/ * elflink.c (elf_output_implib): Remove executable flag from import library bfd. * elf32-arm.c (elf32_arm_filter_implib_symbols): Assert that the import library is a relocatable object file. ld/ * testsuite/ld-arm/arm-elf.exp (Secure gateway import library generation): Check e_type field of import library and executable produced. * testsuite/ld-arm/cmse-implib.type: Expectations for e_type field.
