2024-04-02PR 30569, always call elf_backend_size_dynamic_sectionsAlan Modra1-9/+10
This largely mechanical patch is preparation for a followup patch. For quite some time I've thought that it would be useful to call elf_backend_size_dynamic_sections even when no dynamic objects are seen by the linker. That's what this patch does, with some renaming. There are no functional changes to the linker, just a move of the dynobj test in bfd_elf_size_dynamic_sections to target backend functions, replacing the asserts/aborts already there. No doubt some of the current always_size_sections functions could be moved to size_dynamic_sections but I haven't made that change. Because both hooks are now always called, I have renamed always_size_sections to early_size_sections and size_dynamic_sections to late_size_sections. I condisdered calling late_size_sections plain size_sections, since this is the usual target dynamic section sizing hook, but decided that searching the sources for "size_sections" would then hit early_size_sections and other functions.

Adds two new external authors to etc/update-copyright.py to cover bfd/ax_tls.m4, and adds gprofng to dirs handled automatically, then updates copyright messages as follows: 1) Update cgen/utils.scm emitted copyrights. 2) Run "etc/update-copyright.py --this-year" with an extra external author I haven't committed, 'Kalray SA.', to cover gas testsuite files (which should have their copyright message removed). 3) Build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes. 4) Check out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently.

Freeing ecoff_debug_info "pointers to the unswapped symbolic info" isn't a simple matter, due to differing allocation strategies. In _bfd_ecoff_slurp_symbolic_info the pointers are to objalloc memory. In the ecoff linker they are to separately malloc'd memory. In gas we have most (obj-elf) or all (obj-ecoff) into a single malloc'd buffer. This patch fixes the leaks for binutils and ld, leaving the gas leaks for another day. The mips elf backend already had this covered, and the ecoff backend had a pointer, raw_syments used as a flag, so most of the patch is moving these around a little so they are accessible for both ecoff and elf. include/ * coff/ecoff.h (struct ecoff_debug_info): Add alloc_syments. bfd/ * libecoff.h (struct ecoff_tdata): Delete raw_syments. * elfxx-mips.c (free_ecoff_debug): Delete. Replace uses with _bfd_ecoff_free_ecoff_debug_info. (_bfd_mips_elf_final_link): Init debug.alloc_syments. * ecofflink.c (_bfd_ecoff_free_ecoff_debug_info): New function. * ecoff.c (_bfd_ecoff_bfd_free_cached_info): Call _bfd_ecoff_free_ecoff_debug_info. doc/bfdint.texi and comments in the aout and som code about this function are just wrong, and its name is not very apt. Better would be _bfd_mostly_destroy, and we certainly should not be saying anything about the possibility of later recreating anything lost by this function. What's more, if _bfd_free_cached_info is called when creating an archive map to reduce memory usage by throwing away symbols, the target _close_and_cleanup function won't have access to tdata or section bfd_user_data to tidy memory. This means most of the target _close_and_cleanup function won't do anything, and therefore sometimes will result in memory leaks. This patch fixes the documentation problems and moves most of the target _close_and_cleanup code to target _bfd_free_cached_info. Another notable change is that bfd_generic_bfd_free_cached_info is now defined as _bfd_free_cached_info rather than _bfd_bool_bfd_true, ie. the default now frees objalloc memory.

The "HOWTO size encoding" patch put 1 as the HOWTO size arg for numerous howtos that are unused, describe dynamic relocs, are markers, or otherwise are special purpose reloc howtos that don't care about the size. The idea was to ensure no howto changed by inspecting object files. This changes the HOWTO macro to encode the howto.size field from a value given in bytes. This of course requires editing all target uses of HOWTO, a major pain, but makes it a little nicer to specify new target HOWTOs. The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit breaks building of bfp opcodes files.

This functions was changed to return an int in commit ece5ef60797f but since bfd_boolean was an int typedef I lazily left all the ELF relocate_section functions as returning bfd_boolean, except the SPU one. Don't do anything special with non-loaded, non-alloced sections. In particular, any relocs in such sections should not affect GOT and PLT reference counting (ie. we don't allow them to create GOT or PLT entries), there's no possibility or desire to optimize TLS relocs, and there's not much point in propagating relocs to shared libs that the dynamic linker won't relocate. Since check_relocs is no longer called on non-loaded, non-alloced sections, remove SEC_ALLOC check. ELF size_dynamic_sections is called by the ELF backend linker after all the linker input files have been seen but before the section sizes have been set. After the sections sizes have been set, target-specific, global optimizations may make some dynamic sections zero-sized if they are no longer needed. I was looking at elf_backend_section_flags as a means of setting SEC_SMALL_DATA for .sdata, .sbss and the like, and condidered adding an asection* parameter to access the section name easily before realising that hdr->bfd_section of course makes the section available. So no new parameter needed. In fact the flagword* parameter isn't needed either, so out it goes. The patch also tidies some horrible code in _bfd_elf_new_section_hook that can change whether known ABI sections have sh_type and sh_flags set up depending on which of the bfd_make_section functions is used. (Some of those set section flags before _bfd_elf_new_section_hook is called, others leave the flags zero.) The function also had some hacks for .init_array and .fini_array to affect how _bfd_elf_init_private_section_data behaved for those sections. It's cleaner to do that in _bfd_elf_init_private_section_data. So that all goes and we now init sh_type and sh_flags for all known ABI sections in _bfd_elf_new_section_hook. _bfd_elf_init_private_section_data is changed to suit, and now doesn't just single out SHT_INIT_ARRAY and SHT_FINI_ARRAY but rather any of the special section types. The _bfd_elf_new_section_hook change resulting in +FAIL: ld-aarch64/erratum835769-843419 exposing some errors in the aarch64 backend. elfNN_aarch64_size_stubs should not be looking at linker created sections in the stub bfd. Nor should code like "symtab_hdr = &elf_tdata (input_bfd)->symtab_hdr" be run without first checking that input_bfd is ELF. * elf-bfd.h (elf_backend_section_flags): Remove flagword* param. * elf.c (_bfd_elf_make_section_from_shdr): Set section flags before calling elf_backend_section_flags with adjusted params. bfd_size_type was invented a long time ago in the K&R days. Many places in binutils ought to be using size_t instead (and there are lots of places that use long or unsigned long that really ought to use size_t too). Note that you can't change everything over to size_t: A 32-bit host needs a larger type than size_t to support reading and processing of 64-bit ELF object files. This patch just tidies some of the more obvious uses of bfd_size_type that could be size_t. There no doubt are more lurking in the source. Incidentally, practically all functions used for output of object files can use size_t and don't need to worry about overflow of size expressions. If you have something like symcount * sizeof (void *) when symcount is counting symbols already in memory then you know that this expression can't overflow since the size of a symbol in memory is This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. extra casts. GCC v8 issues warnings about mis-matching casts of function pointers. A previous patch tried to fix this problem by adding new dummy functions which accepted a variable number of arguments. But this introduces serious problems when compiled with other versions of gcc, (notably gcc 4.4). This patch reverts that previous solution and instead adds extra casts (to function types without a parameter list).
