This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.
The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

All of the backend relocate_section functions that interpret reloc
numbers assuming the input file is of the expected type (ie. same as

This patch is aimed at silencing gcc8 -Wstringop-truncation warnings.
Unfortunately adding __attribute__ ((__nonstring)) doesn't work in a
number of the places patched here, (see
https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=85643) so if you have
recent glibc headers installed you'll need to configure binutils with

ifunc symbols found in note sections.
Following on from PR 22929, I have found the same problem exists with
other ifunc supporting targets too. Plus see this link for the bug
being reported against the s390x binutils for Fedora rawhide:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1553705
So I am going to check in the patch below which applies the same
change that H.J. made for the x86_64 target to the other affected
targets. (Specifically: S390, AArch64 and Sparc). Plus it adds a new
test to the linker testsuite to make sure that this problem stays
fixed.

test.

Many targets define their own dyn_relocs struct when they could use
struct elf_dyn_relocs. This patch tidies that, and uses
readonly_dynrelocs in a few more places.
The SH adjust_dynamic_symbol had some really weird code dating back to
2002 that looked over dynamic relocations for any in SEC_HAS_CONTENTS
or SEC_READONLY sections, rather than just the usual SEC_READONLY
sections. So basically any dynamic relocation. What's more, the SH
relocate_section has no support for emitting dynamic relocations in
non-PIC. In other words, SH has no support for avoiding copy relocs
in non-PIC. I've made that more obvious by using "if (0 && ..)" in
asjust_dynamic_symbol.
Unfortunately, LM32, M32R, NDS32, and OR1K copied the bogus SH
adjust_dynamic_symbol code. So none of those targets would have
avoided copy relocs. LM32, M32R, NDS32 get the "if (0)" treatment
too. (LM32 is even more broken in that non_got_ref is never set.)
OR1K relocate_section looks like it might support dynamic relocs in
non-PIC, so I've enabled the copy reloc avoidance code for that
target.

In early October, HJ Lu added support for a number of targets to "Dump
dynamic relocation in read-only section with minfo". This extends
that support to more targets, displays the symbol involved, and splits
the existing function that sets TEXTREL into a "readonly_dynrelocs"
and "maybe_set_textrel" function. I'll need "readonly_dynrelocs" if I
ever get around to fixing "pr22374 function pointer initialization"
fails.
am33_2.0, arc, bfin, hppa64, mn10300, and nios2 fail to mark a binary
needing text relocations with DT_TEXTREL. That's not good. xtensa also
fails to do so but complains about "dangerous relocation: dynamic
relocation in read-only section" so I reckon that is fine and have
marked the test as an xfail. The other targets need maintainer
attention.
Curiously, the map file dump wasn't added for x86, so the map test
currently fail on x86. It also fails on alpha, am33_2.0, arc, bfin,
hppa64, ia64, m68k, mips, mn10300, nios2, score and vax. cris
complains with "tmpdir/textrel.o, section .rodata: relocation
R_CRIS_32 should not be used in a shared object; recompile with -fPIC"
so I've marked it as an xfail.

This makes the elf_link_hash_entry weakdef field, currently used to
point from a weak symbol to a strong alias, a circular list so that
all aliases can be found from any of them. A new flag, is_weakalias,
distinguishes the weak symbol from a strong alias, and is used in all
places where we currently test u.weakdef != NULL.
With the original u.weakdef handling it was possible to have two or
more weak symbols pointing via u.weakdef to a strong definition.
Obviously that situation can't map to a circular list; One or more of
the weak symbols must point at another weak alias rather than the
strong definition. To handle that, I've added an accessor function to
return the strong definition.

For all ELF targers, call check_relocs after opening all inputs and
garbage collection. Since the symbol resolution is known, check_relocs
can be simplified. Also garbage collection doesn't need to undo what
check_relocs has done for symbols which have been garbage collected.
Since ELF targets never see the removed sections, gc_sweep_hook can be
removed from elf_backend_data and we can avoid GOT/PLT with garbage
collection now.
Set link_info.check_relocs_after_open_input to TRUE for all linker
targets which use ELF linker and update garbage collection tests to
remove unused GOT section.
ldemul_after_check_relocs is added for powerpc to support --secure-plt,
--bss-plt and --sdata-got.
Tested natively without regressions on i686, x86-64 and x32. Tested
cross binutils on x86-64 without regressions for aarch64-linux,

Fix commit 70a38d42c5b3 ("New entry points for writing Linux NT_PRPSINFO
notes."), <https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2013-02/msg00023.html>,
and commit b3ac9c77560a ("Put more info in NT_PRPSINFO Linux notes"),
<https://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2013-02/msg00024.html>, and handle
both variants of the 32-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note across all targets.
The 32-bit Linux core PRPSINFO note matches the 32-bit kernel structure,
defined as follows:
(gdb) ptype struct elf_prpsinfo
type = struct elf_prpsinfo {
char pr_state;
char pr_sname;
char pr_zomb;
char pr_nice;
unsigned long pr_flag;
__kernel_uid_t pr_uid;
__kernel_gid_t pr_gid;
pid_t pr_pid;
pid_t pr_ppid;
pid_t pr_pgrp;
pid_t pr_sid;
char pr_fname[16];
char pr_psargs[80];
}
(gdb)
where the individual data types of most members are the same across all
32-bit Linux ports, with the exception of `__kernel_uid_t' and
`__kernel_gid_t'. These are defined in <asm-generic/posix_types.h> as
32-bit `unsigned int' by default, however overridden as 16-bit `unsigned
short' in port-specific <asm/posix_types.h> for a few targets, mostly
earlier ports of Linux, specifically: ARM, CRIS, FR-V, M32R, m68k,
MN10300/AM33, s390, SuperH, SPARC and i386.
The default is the same as the PowerPC variant already handled, as from
the commits referred. Make the special PowerPC case generic then,
removing the GDB part, and provide a backend flag to switch between the
two cases possible, with the 32-bit one being the default and the 16-bit
one explicitly selected. Set the flag in the target backends affected.

I'd made this dynamic section read-only so a flag test distinguished
it from .dynbss, but like any other .data.rel.ro section it really
should be marked read-write. (It is read-only after relocation, not
before.) When using the standard linker scripts this usually doesn't
matter since the output section is among other read-write sections and
not page aligned. However, it might matter in the extraordinary case
of the dynamic section being the only .data.rel.ro section with the
output section just happening to be page aligned and a multiple of a
page in size. In that case the output section would be read-only, and
live it its own read-only PT_LOAD segment, which is incorrect.

A while ago HJ fixed PR ld/18720 with commit 6e33951ed, which, among
other things, modified _bfd_elf_link_hash_copy_indirect to not copy
ref_dynamic, ref_regular, ref_regular_nonweak, non_got_ref, needs_plt
and pointer_equality_needed when setting up an indirect non-versioned
symbol pointing to a non-default versioned symbol. I didn't notice at
the time, but the pr18720 testcase fails on hppa-linux with
"internal error, aborting at binutils-gdb-2.28/bfd/elf32-hppa.c:3933
in elf32_hppa_relocate_section".
Now hppa-linux creates entries in the plt even for local functions, if
they are referenced using plabel (function pointer) relocations. So
needs_plt is set for foo when processing pr18720a.o. When the aliases
in pr28720b.o are processed, we get an indirection from foo to
foo@FOO, but don't copy needs_plt. Since foo@FOO is the "real" symbol
that is used after that point, no plt entry is made for foo and we
bomb when relocating the plabel.
As shown by the hppa-linux scenario, needs_plt should be copied even
for non-default versioned symbols. I believe all of the others ought
to be copied too, with the exception of ref_dynamic. Not copying
ref_dynamic is right because if a shared lib references "foo" it
should not be satisfied by any non-default version "foo@FOO".
* elflink.c (_bfd_elf_link_hash_copy_indirect): Only omit
copying one flag, ref_dynamic, when versioned_hidden.

Variables defined in shared libraries are copied into an executable's
.bss section when code in the executable is non-PIC and thus would
require dynamic text relocations to access the variable directly in
the shared library. Recent x86 toolchains also copy variables into
the executable to gain a small speed improvement.
The problem is that if the variable was originally read-only, the copy
in .bss is writable, potentially opening a security hole. This patch
cures that problem by putting the copy in a section that becomes
read-only after ld.so relocation, provided -z relro is in force.
The patch also fixes a microblaze linker segfault on attempting to
use dynamic bss variables.

Most BFD linker functions take a bfd_link_info param, which reinforces
the fact that they are linker functions and allow access to linker
callbacks, eg. einfo for printing errors. I was going to use einfo
for --fatal-warnings support before I decided a better way was the
patch commit 4519d071.

This enhances the 32-bit and 64-bit s390 ELF backends with support for
reading and writing the core dump note sections NT_PRSTATUS and
NT_PRPSINFO. Byte swapping is done as appropriate, such that core files
can now be processed correctly on non-s390 platforms.
bfd/ChangeLog:
* elf32-s390.c (stdarg.h): New include.
(elf_s390_grok_psinfo): New function.

This was broken by 4ade44b727ee77adaa9c22719935d012e253a5e6,
which changed the calculation to use the .rela.plt linker section
instead of its output section - thus skipping .rela.iplt .
Fix the calculations to include it.
bfd/ChangeLog:
* elf32-s390.c (elf_s390_finish_dynamic_sections): Include
.rela.iplt in DT_PLTRELSZ.
* elf64-s390.c (elf_s390_finish_dynamic_sections): Likewise,
for DT_PLTRELSZ and DT_RELASZ as well.

The only non-comment fix here is in the code writing out the 3 fixed
.got.plt entries - it mistakenly put a 64-bit 0 at offsets 8 and 12
instead of 8 and 16.
bfd/ChangeLog:
* elf32-s390.c (elf_s390_finish_dynamic_symbol): Fix comment.
* elf64-s390.c (elf_s390x_plt_entry): Fix comment.
(elf_s390_relocate_section): Fix comment.
(elf_s390_finish_dynamic_sections): Fix initialization of fixed
.got.plt entries.

The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always
return true, so any code handling a false return is dead. What's
more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen,
and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c.
The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition
error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic
failure".
This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always
return true. I kept the return status for "notice" because that one
does happen to need to return "out of memory".
include/
* bfdlink.h (struct bfd_link_callbacks): Update comments.
Return void from multiple_definition, multiple_common,
add_to_set, constructor, warning, undefined_symbol,
reloc_overflow, reloc_dangerous and unattached_reloc.
