2019-09-19bfd_section_* macrosAlan Modra1-8/+8
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified anyway. The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros, replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage in gas processing. bfd/ * bfd-in.h (bfd_get_section_name, bfd_get_section_vma), (bfd_get_section_lma, bfd_get_section_alignment), (bfd_get_section_size, bfd_get_section_flags), (bfd_get_section_userdata): Delete. 2017-12-06dyn_relocs tidyAlan Modra1-31/+11
Many targets define their own dyn_relocs struct when they could use struct elf_dyn_relocs. This patch tidies that, and uses readonly_dynrelocs in a few more places. The SH adjust_dynamic_symbol had some really weird code dating back to 2002 that looked over dynamic relocations for any in SEC_HAS_CONTENTS or SEC_READONLY sections, rather than just the usual SEC_READONLY sections. So basically any dynamic relocation. What's more, the SH relocate_section has no support for emitting dynamic relocations in non-PIC. In other words, SH has no support for avoiding copy relocs in non-PIC. I've made that more obvious by using "if (0 && ..)" in asjust_dynamic_symbol. Unfortunately, LM32, M32R, NDS32, and OR1K copied the bogus SH adjust_dynamic_symbol code. So none of those targets would have avoided copy relocs. LM32, M32R, NDS32 get the "if (0)" treatment too. (LM32 is even more broken in that non_got_ref is never set.) OR1K relocate_section looks like it might support dynamic relocs in non-PIC, so I've enabled the copy reloc avoidance code for that target. * elf32-hppa.c (struct elf32_hppa_dyn_reloc_entry): Delete. 2017-11-23Rename u.weakdef and make it a circular listAlan Modra1-6/+6
This makes the elf_link_hash_entry weakdef field, currently used to point from a weak symbol to a strong alias, a circular list so that all aliases can be found from any of them. A new flag, is_weakalias, distinguishes the weak symbol from a strong alias, and is used in all places where we currently test u.weakdef != NULL. With the original u.weakdef handling it was possible to have two or more weak symbols pointing via u.weakdef to a strong definition. Obviously that situation can't map to a circular list; One or more of the weak symbols must point at another weak alias rather than the strong definition. To handle that, I've added an accessor function to return the strong definition. * elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_entry): Add is_weakalias. Rename u.weakdef to u.alias and update comment. (weakdef): New static inline function. * elflink.c (bfd_elf_record_link_assignment) Test is_weakalias rather than u.weakdef != NULL, and use weakdef function. 2017-10-16ELF: Call check_relocs after opening all inputsH.J. Lu1-105/+0
For all ELF targers, call check_relocs after opening all inputs and garbage collection. Since the symbol resolution is known, check_relocs can be simplified. Also garbage collection doesn't need to undo what check_relocs has done for symbols which have been garbage collected. Since ELF targets never see the removed sections, gc_sweep_hook can be removed from elf_backend_data and we can avoid GOT/PLT with garbage collection now. Set link_info.check_relocs_after_open_input to TRUE for all linker targets which use ELF linker and update garbage collection tests to remove unused GOT section. ldemul_after_check_relocs is added for powerpc to support --secure-plt, --bss-plt and --sdata-got. Tested natively without regressions on i686, x86-64 and x32. 2017-02-28Nios2 dynobj handling fixesAlan Modra1-101/+53
A number of places in elf32-nios.c created dynamic sections but didn't set the hash table dynobj. That meant we could have duplicate dynamic sections connected to a number of bfds, so size_dynamic_sections didn't properly discard or allocate contents. Also, the entire set of dynamic sections was created in check_relocs on seeing GOT relocs, when only .got related sections are needed, probably done to hide segfaults later in finish_dynamic_sections. The patch fixes these issues and makes the assembler emit errors when nios2 lacks the necessary pc-relative relocs for subtraction expressions, rather than silently generating bad code. eg. ld-elf/merge. I've also tidied uses of elf32_nios2_hash_table and elf_hash_table. bfd/ PR 20995 * elf32-nios2.c (nios2_elf32_relocate_section): Use htab rather than elf32_nios2_hash_table or elf_hash_table. 2017-02-28Don't make dynamic .data.rel.ro SEC_READONLYAlan Modra1-1/+1
I'd made this dynamic section read-only so a flag test distinguished it from .dynbss, but like any other .data.rel.ro section it really should be marked read-write. (It is read-only after relocation, not before.) When using the standard linker scripts this usually doesn't matter since the output section is among other read-write sections and not page aligned. However, it might matter in the extraordinary case of the dynamic section being the only .data.rel.ro section with the output section just happening to be page aligned and a multiple of a page in size. In that case the output section would be read-only, and live it its own read-only PT_LOAD segment, which is incorrect. * elflink.c (_bfd_elf_create_dynamic_sections): Don't make dynamic .data.rel.ro read-only. * elf32-arm.c (elf32_arm_finish_dynamic_symbol): Compare section rather than section flags when deciding where copy reloc goes. * elf32-cris.c (elf_cris_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-hppa.c (elf32_hppa_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-i386.c (elf_i386_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-metag.c (elf_metag_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-microblaze.c (microblaze_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-nios2.c (nios2_elf32_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-or1k.c (or1k_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-ppc.c (ppc_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-s390.c (elf_s390_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-tic6x.c (elf32_tic6x_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf32-tilepro.c (tilepro_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf64-ppc.c (ppc64_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf64-s390.c (elf_s390_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elf64-x86-64.c (elf_x86_64_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elfnn-aarch64.c (elfNN_aarch64_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elfnn-riscv.c (riscv_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elfxx-mips.c (_bfd_mips_vxworks_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elfxx-sparc.c (_bfd_sparc_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise. * elfxx-tilegx.c (tilegx_elf_finish_dynamic_symbol): Likewise.

2016-12-26dynrelro section for read-only dynamic symbols copied into executableAlan Modra1-15/+26
Variables defined in shared libraries are copied into an executable's .bss section when code in the executable is non-PIC and thus would require dynamic text relocations to access the variable directly in the shared library. Recent x86 toolchains also copy variables into the executable to gain a small speed improvement. The problem is that if the variable was originally read-only, the copy in .bss is writable, potentially opening a security hole. This patch cures that problem by putting the copy in a section that becomes read-only after ld.so relocation, provided -z relro is in force. The patch also fixes a microblaze linker segfault on attempting to use dynamic bss variables. bfd/ PR ld/20995 * elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_table): Add sdynrelro and sreldynrelro. 2016-05-28Return void from linker callbacksAlan Modra1-9/+9
The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always return true, so any code handling a false return is dead. What's more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen, and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c. The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic failure". This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always return true. I kept the return status for "notice" because that one does happen to need to return "out of memory". include/ * bfdlink.h (struct bfd_link_callbacks): Update comments. 2015-08-18Add output_type to bfd_link_infoH.J. Lu1-38/+42
The "shared" field in bfd_link_info is set for both DSO and and PIE. There are separate fields for executable and relocatable outputs. This patch adds an "output_type" field: enum output_type { type_unknown = 0, type_executable, type_dll, type_relocatable }; and a "pic" field to bfd_link_info to replace shared, executable and relocatable fields so that we can use the "output_type" field to check for output type and the "pic" field check if output is PIC. Macros, bfd_link_executable, bfd_link_dll, bfd_link_relocatable, bfd_link_pic and bfd_link_pie, are provided to check for output features. bfd/ * bfd/aoutx.h: Replace shared, executable, relocatable and pie fields with bfd_link_executable, bfd_link_dll, bfd_link_relocatable, bfd_link_pic and bfd_link_pie. * bfd/bout.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-alpha.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-arm.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-i386.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-i960.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-m68k.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-mcore.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-mips.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-ppc.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-rs6000.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-sh.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-tic80.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-x86_64.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff64-rs6000.c: Likewise. * bfd/coffgen.c: Likewise. * bfd/cofflink.c: Likewise. * bfd/ecoff.c: Likewise. * bfd/ecofflink.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf-bfd.h: Likewise. * bfd/elf-eh-frame.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf-ifunc.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf-m10200.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf-m10300.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf-s390-common.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf-vxworks.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-arm.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-avr.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-bfin.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-cr16.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-cr16c.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-cris.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-crx.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-d10v.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-dlx.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-epiphany.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-fr30.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-frv.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-ft32.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-h8300.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-hppa.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-i370.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-i386.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-i860.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-ip2k.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-iq2000.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-lm32.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-m32c.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-m32r.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-m68hc11.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-m68hc1x.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-m68k.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-mcore.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-mep.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-metag.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-microblaze.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-moxie.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-msp430.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-mt.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-nds32.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-nios2.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-or1k.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-ppc.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-rl78.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-rx.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-s390.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-score.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-score7.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-sh-symbian.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-sh.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-sh64.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-spu.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-tic6x.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-tilepro.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-v850.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-vax.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-visium.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-xc16x.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-xstormy16.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-xtensa.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-alpha.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-hppa.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-ia64-vms.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-mmix.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-ppc.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-s390.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-sh64.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-x86-64.c: Likewise. * bfd/elflink.c: Likewise. * bfd/elfnn-aarch64.c: Likewise. * bfd/elfnn-ia64.c: Likewise. * bfd/elfxx-mips.c: Likewise. * bfd/elfxx-sparc.c: Likewise. * bfd/elfxx-tilegx.c: Likewise. * bfd/i386linux.c: Likewise. * bfd/linker.c: Likewise. * bfd/m68klinux.c: Likewise. * bfd/pdp11.c: Likewise. * bfd/pe-mips.c: Likewise. * bfd/peXXigen.c: Likewise. * bfd/reloc.c: Likewise. * bfd/reloc16.c: Likewise. * bfd/sparclinux.c: Likewise. * bfd/sunos.c: Likewise. * bfd/vms-alpha.c: Likewise. * bfd/xcofflink.c: Likewise. include/ * include/bfdlink.h (output_type): New enum. 2015-01-19Fallout from recent bfd_reloc_outofrange changesAlan Modra1-1/+1
Commit ec93045b and cd21f5da introduced a large number of tic4x and tic54x regressions, due to the new checks being wrong for targets with octets_per_byte != 1. To fix that I introduced a new bfd_get_section_limit_octets and performed the check on octets rather than byte adresses, reducing the number of bfd_octets_per_byte calls. bfd_octets_per_byte is rather expensive.. I then wondered why the same bfd_reloc_outofrange check added to bfd_perform_relocation wasn't also added to bfd_install_relocation. The two functions are virtually identical and ought to remain that way. However, adding the same check to bfd_install_relocation resulted in ld-elf "FAIL Link eh-group.o to eh-group" on many ELF targets, including x64_64-linux. The reason being that eh-group.o has NONE relocs at the end of a section, and most targets give NONE relocs a non-zero size. So if we are to keep the new outofrange check it appears that NONE relocs must have a zero size. * bfd-in.h (bfd_get_section_limit_octets): New define, extracted from.. 2014-06-13Don't call bfd_link_hash_table_freeAlan Modra1-2/+1
Freeing the linker hash table is a royal pain. It can't be freed before the _bfd_write_contents call in bfd_close, because some target bfd_write_contents functions access the hash table. It can't be freed after bfd_close either, since bfd_alloc memory holding side data structures disappears (PR17047). Clearly the only place it can be freed is actually in bfd_close. This patch doesn't do that, but kills off the existing means of freeing the hash table via a bfd target xvec call. bfd/ PR 17047 * targets.c (BFD_JUMP_TABLE): Delete NAME##_bfd_link_hash_table_free. 2014-06-13Make bfd.link_next field a unionAlan Modra1-4/+4
