Binutils is supposed to use tabs. In my git config I have
whitespace = indent-with-non-tab,space-before-tab,trailing-space
and I got annoyed enough seeing red in "git diff" output to fix
the problems.

This makes the elf_link_hash_entry weakdef field, currently used to
point from a weak symbol to a strong alias, a circular list so that
all aliases can be found from any of them. A new flag, is_weakalias,
distinguishes the weak symbol from a strong alias, and is used in all
places where we currently test u.weakdef != NULL.
With the original u.weakdef handling it was possible to have two or
more weak symbols pointing via u.weakdef to a strong definition.
Obviously that situation can't map to a circular list; One or more of
the weak symbols must point at another weak alias rather than the
strong definition. To handle that, I've added an accessor function to
return the strong definition.
* elf-bfd.h (struct elf_link_hash_entry): Add is_weakalias.
Rename u.weakdef to u.alias and update comment.
(weakdef): New static inline function.
* elflink.c (bfd_elf_record_link_assignment) Test is_weakalias
rather than u.weakdef != NULL, and use weakdef function.
(_bfd_elf_adjust_dynamic_symbol): Likewise.
(_bfd_elf_fix_symbol_flags): Likewise. Clear is_weakalias on
all aliases if def has been overridden in a regular object, not
u.weakdef.
(elf_link_add_object_symbols): Delete new_weakdef flag. Test
is_weakalias and use weakdef. Set is_weakalias and circular
u.alias. Update comments.
(_bfd_elf_gc_mark_rsec): Test is_weakalias rather than
u.weakdef != NULL and use weakdef function.
* elf-m10300.c (_bfd_mn10300_elf_adjust_dynamic_symbol): Test
is_weakalias rather than u.weakdef != NULL and use weakdef
function. Assert that def is strong defined.

Fixed conditions to create the dynamic sections.
Previously there would be times where the dynamic sections would not be created
although they were actually required for linking to work.
Issue found through OpenADK build, more precisely the ublicb testsuite package.
bfd/ChangeLog:
Cupertino Miranda <cmiranda@synopsys.com>
elf32-arc.c (elf_arc_check_relocs): Fixed conditions to generate
dynamic sections.
|

TEXTREL was being generated even when relocatable .o files had the .rela.text
section. Now it is limitted only to dynamic object files that still have them.
Nevertheless, our target aborts in those cases due to architecture limitations
where icache is not coherent with dcache, and to force this coherence expensive
kernel level support would be needed.
bfd/ChangeLog:
Cupertino Miranda <cmiranda@synopsys.com>
* elf32-arc.c (elf_arc_size_dynamic_sections): Changed condition to
require TEXTREL.

In the case of static relocation, the GOT entries are fixed at link time
and are set by the linker.
In order to compute the right TLS offset it is necessary to add TCB_SIZE
to the offset, just in case the dynamic linker is not expected to be
executed (static linked case).
This problem does appear in dynamic linked applications, as the dynamic
linker is adding this TCB_SIZE by operating the TCB block structure.
Problem revealed in GLIBC with static linking.
bfd/ChangeLog:
Cupertino Miranda <cmiranda@synopsys.com>
arc-got.h (relocate_fix_got_relocs_for_got_info): Added TCB_SIZE to
patched section contents for TLS IE reloc.
elf32-arc.c: Remove TCB_SIZE preprocessor macro.
Rebase to 0006

elf32-arc.c (elf_arc_relocate_section): Added "call" to
RELOC_FOR_GLOBAL_SYMBOL macro.
|
|
Fixed issue related to the generation of ARC_PC32 dynamic relocs when symbol
is dynamic but still defined in a non shared object.
bfd/ChangeLog:
Cupertino Miranda <cmiranda@synopsys.com>
elf32-arc.c (elf_arc_relocate_section): Small refactor and condition
changes.
|

GOT information would not be reassign to symbol when it became a indect
symbol.
bfd/ChangeLog:
Cupertino Miranda <cmiranda@synopsys.com>
* elf32-arc.c (elf_arc_relocate_section): Fixed reassign of indirect
symbols.
|
|
R_ARC_32 and R_ARC_32_ME cannot be generated as dynamic relocs.
However, a warning message and check_relocs was aborting when this type of
reloc was being resolved to a local symbol.
This is wrong as local symbols are resolvable at link time.
bfd/ChangeLog:
Cupertino Miranda <cmiranda@synopsys.com>
* elf32-arc.c (elf_arc_check_relocs): Added condition to disable
warning and "Bad value" for local symbols ARC_32 or ARC_32_ME relocs.

* elf32-arc.c (ADD_RELA): Changed to only work when dynamic object is

This patch fixes a number of issues in the ARC backend.
- The ARC size_dynamic_sections was trashing dynamic section contents,
in particular the .gnu.version_d contents. Those versions
definitions are therefore lost so they do not drain from the strtab,
resulting in assertion failures.
- The code attempting to set DT_TEXTREL was completely bogus.
- The ARC finish_dynamic_sections would segfault on trying to set
sh_entsize for .rela.plt if that section had been discarded.
- arc_create_dynamic_sections wouldn't have ever created dynamics
sections, which was just as well since the places it was called were
way too late to create dynamic sections. Its usefulness then
devolved down to finding just one dynamic section. All the others
packaged into a struct were unused.
- .interp wasn't set for PIEs.
* elf32-arc.c (struct dynamic_sections): Delete.
(enum dyn_section_types): Delete.
(dyn_section_names): Delete.
(arc_create_dynamic_sections): Delete.
(elf_arc_finish_dynamic_sections): Don't call the above. Don't
segfault on discarded .rela.plt section.
(elf_arc_size_dynamic_sections): Formatting. Don't call
arc_create_dynamic_sections. Don't allocate memory for sections
handled by the generic linker. Correct code finding relocs in
read-only sections. Set SEC_EXCLUDE on zero size .got,
.got.plt, and .dynbss sections. Do set .interp for pies.

Most BFD linker functions take a bfd_link_info param, which reinforces
the fact that they are linker functions and allow access to linker
callbacks, eg. einfo for printing errors. I was going to use einfo
for --fatal-warnings support before I decided a better way was the
patch commit 4519d071.

The ldmain.c implementation of these linker callback functions always
return true, so any code handling a false return is dead. What's
more, some of the bfd backends abort if ever a false return is seen,
and there seems to be some confusion in gdb's compile-object-load.c.
The return value was never meant to be "oh yes, a multiple_definition
error occurred", but rather "out of memory or other catastrophic
failure".
This patch removes the status return on the callbacks that always
return true. I kept the return status for "notice" because that one
does happen to need to return "out of memory".

Add support for arc/nps400 cmem instructions, these load and store
instructions are hard-wired to access "0x57f00000 + 16-bit-offset".
Supporting this relocation required some additions to the arc relocation

add a new relocation type.
There's a test of the new instructions in the assembler, and a test of

In bfd/elf32-arc.c an enum is created that contains entries with generic
names like 'NONE' and 'OFF'. This has been fine for now, but I had a
need to include opcode/arc.h into bfd/elf32-arc.c. Unfortunately
opcode/arc.h includes a different enum with identical generic names.
Given that changing the enum in the header file could mean wide-ranging
changes, while changing the enum in the .c file is limited to only
changing the one file, I've added a prefix to the enum in the .c file.
This commit does not add the new include, that will come later. There
should be no functional change with this commit.

This commit introduces the nps400 machine type as a variant of arc.
There's a new flag in the assembler to select this machine type. All
other changes are just adding handling of the new machine type into the
relevant places.
The nps400 is an arc700 variant with some vendor specific instructions
added into the instruction set. This commit does not add any of the new
instructions, this is just laying the groundwork for future commits.
However, in preparation for these new instructions a new opcode define for
nps400 has been added to include/opcode/arc.h, this new opcode define is
used in the assembler and disassembler along with the existing define
for arc700 such that when assembling and disassembling for nps400 the
user will have access to all arc700 instructions and all the nps400
vendor extension instructions.

The constant EF_ARC_CPU_GENERIC is defined in the include/elf/arc.h
file, and is used in a few places in binutils, however, this constant
should never make it into the elf header flags; we always set a valid
cpu type in the assembler, which should then be copied over during
linking.
There are some non-gnu arc compilers that don't write an architecture
type into the e_flags field, instead leaving the field as 0, which is
the EF_ARC_CPU_GENERIC value. This non-gnu compiler uses the machine
type to distinguish between the old and newer arc architectures, setting
the machine type to EM_ARC_COMPACT for old arc600, arc601, and arc700
architectures, while using EM_ARC_COMPACT2 for newer arcem and archs
architectures.
Previously when displaying the machine flags for an older EM_ARC_COMPACT
machine, if the e_flags had not been filled in, then we relied on the
default case statement to display the message "Generic ARCompact", while
in the EM_ARC_COMPACT2 case we specifically handled EF_ARC_CPU_GENERIC
to print "ARC Generic", leaving the default case to print a message
about unrecognised cpu flag.
After this commit EF_ARC_CPU_GENERIC has been removed, for both machine
types EM_ARC_COMPACT and EM_ARC_COMPACT2 we now rely on the default case
statement to handle the situation where the e_flags has not been filled
in. The message displayed is now "Unknown ARCompact" (for older arc
architectures) and "Unknown ARC" (for the newer architectures). The
switch from "Generic" to "Unknown" in the message string is for clarity,
calling the file "Generic" can give the impression that the file is
compiled for a common sub-set of the architectures, and would therefore
run on any type of machine (or at least any type of new or old machine
depending on if the machine type is ARC or ARCv2). However, this was
not what "Generic" meant, it really meant "Unknown", so that's what we
now say.
As part of the merging of the readelf flag reading code, I have unified
the strings used in displaying the ELF ABI. This means that for older
arc machines (arc600, arc601, and arc700) the string used for the
original ABI, and ABIv2 have changed, the current ABIv3 remains the
same. For the newer architectures (arcem and archs) the abi strings
remain unchanged in all cases.
bfd/ChangeLog:
* elf32-arc.c (arc_elf_print_private_bfd_data): Remove use of
EF_ARC_CPU_GENERIC.
(arc_elf_final_write_processing): Don't bother setting cpu field
in e_flags, this will have been set elsewhere.

(decode_ARC_machine_flags): ... new function. Remove use of
EF_ARC_CPU_GENERIC, change default case from "generic arc" to
"unknown arc". Merged ABI printing between two machine types.
