2023-08-25bfd: correct relocation handling for objcopy COFF -> ELFJan Beulich1-1/+2
While documented to not be reliable, it is still odd for objcopy to silently produce bad output when converting COFF/PE object files to ELF ones. The issue there is that relocation addends all are screwed up by subtracting the symbol's section offset. In the COFF/PE world, to my knowledge, section contents stores the addends alone, not the result of symbol value plus addend. Hence the compensation talked about in a comment ahead of the sole use site of CALC_ADDEND() may need to account for the VMA (which is always zero for object files anyway), but not for the symbol value. The coff-sh.c adjustment is based upon guessing that behavior there is the same. Note also how coff-aarch64.c short-circuits CALC_ADDEND() altogether, which may suggest that a much simpler macro might do for the COFF_WITH_PE case in the three arch-specific files touched here. For (at least) Arm/WinCE this actually results in more appropriate objdump output as well, as can be seen in the one testcase which has its expectations adjusted (the generated binary doesn't change).
2023-08-03Remove PEI_HEADERS defineTom Tromey1-5/+0
I noticed a few files double-included libcoff.h, and digging deeper I found that the PEI_HEADERS define is a sort of external include guard. This patch adds include guards to the few files in include/coff that were missing one, and then removes the PEI_HEADERS workaround and the redundant includes. I didn't see anything in these files that indicated that double-inclusion would be useful, so it seems to me that this approach is ok. Tested by rebuilding with --enable-targets=all. 2023-08-02 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * pei-x86_64.c (PEI_HEADERS): Do not define. * pei-loongarch64.c (PEI_HEADERS): Do not define. * pei-aarch64.c (PEI_HEADERS): Do not define. * pe-x86_64.c (PEI_HEADERS): Do not define. * pe-aarch64.c (PEI_HEADERS): Do not define. * libpei.h (_LIBPEI_H): Add include guard. * coff-x86_64.c (PEI_HEADERS): Do not check. * coff-loongarch64.c (PEI_HEADERS): Do not check. * coff-aarch64.c (PEI_HEADERS): Do not check. include/ChangeLog 2023-08-02 Tom Tromey <tromey@adacore.com> * coff/x86_64.h (COFF_X86_64_H): Add include guard. * coff/loongarch64.h (COFF_LOONGARCH64_H): Add include guard. * coff/aarch64.h (COFF_AARCH64_H): Add include guard.

2023-01-01Update year range in copyright notice of binutils filesAlan Modra1-1/+1
The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match.
2022-06-08Don't encode reloc.sizeAlan Modra1-5/+5
I expect the encoded reloc.size field originally came from aout r_length ecoding, but somehow went wrong for 64-bit relocs (which should have been encoded as 3). Toss all that out, just use a byte size instead. The changes outside of reloc.c in this patch should make the code independent of how reloc.size is encoded. * reloc.c (struct reloc_howto_struct): Increase size field by one bit. Comment. 2022-06-08HOWTO size encodingAlan Modra1-18/+18
This changes the HOWTO macro to encode the howto.size field from a value given in bytes. 2022-05-27Remove use of bfd_uint64_t and similarAlan Modra1-1/+1
Requiring C99 means that uses of bfd_uint64_t can be replaced with uint64_t, and similarly for bfd_int64_t, BFD_HOST_U_64_BIT, and BFD_HOST_64_BIT. This patch does that, removes #ifdef BFD_HOST_* and tidies a few places that print 64-bit values.

2022-01-02Update year range in copyright notice of binutils filesAlan Modra1-1/+1
The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit breaks building of bfp opcodes files.
2021-10-31Don't include coff/pe.h in coff-x86_64.cAlan Modra1-5/+0
This (and other) code from coffcode.h is broken for x86_64_coff_vec, and has been ever since support was added in 2006 commit 99ad839030c1 Here, bfd_coff_aoutsz must match coff_swap_aouthdr_out otherwise we end up writing garbage. /* Note that peicode.h fills in a PEAOUTHDR, not an AOUTHDR. include/coff/pe.h sets AOUTSZ == sizeof (PEAOUTHDR)). */ char * buff; bfd_size_type amount = bfd_coff_aoutsz (abfd); buff = (char *) bfd_malloc (amount); if (buff == NULL) return false; coff_swap_aouthdr_out (abfd, & internal_a, buff); amount = bfd_bwrite (buff, amount, abfd); We have removed support for --target=x86_64-coff, likely because it never worked properly, but still produce coff-x86_64.o with --enable-targets=all. This means objcopy can recognize x86_64 COFF files but will write garbage to the output file, a fact found by fuzzers. I suspect x86_64 COFF is still broken after this fix, and mention of coff-x86_64.* should be removed from bfd/Makefile.am. * coff-x86_64.c: Don't include coff/pe.h. (COFF_WITH_pex64): Don't define here. * pe-x86_64.c: Include coff/pe.h and other headers. (PEI_HEADERS): Define.

2021-03-05elf/x86-64: Subtract __ImageBase for R_AMD64_IMAGEBASEH.J. Lu1-4/+31
When linking Windows x86-64 relocatable object files to generate x86-64 ELF executable, we need to subtract __ImageBase, aka __executable_start, for R_AMD64_IMAGEBASE relocation: 1. 2021-03-05Move x86_64 PE changes out of bfd_perform_relocationAlan Modra1-16/+16
bfd_perform_relocation should not have special case target code. This patch moves the code that was there for x86_64 PE linking to ELF output into the x86_64 PE howto special function, correcting that function for linking to targets other than ELF too. The fixes in bfd_perform_relocation were over-complicated due to needing to compensate for things that had already gone wrong in coff_amd64_reloc. In particular, an adjustment for pc-relative relocs was done in a way that meant adjustment for things related to symbol offsets was lost. I think those two things are orthogonal, but who knows with COFF where addends and symbol values are found randomly in the section contents. Note that linking natively to an x86_64 PE output relocates by coff_pe_amd64_relocate_section, which does not use arelent relocs or bfd_perform_relocation, but be aware of coff_amd64_rtype_to_howto hacking addends for relocations. The adjustments for a particular relocation type there and in coff_amd64_reloc ought to match after taking into consideration CALC_ADDEND. They don't. For example, the pc-relative adjustment for R_PCRWORD is 2 bytes in coff_amd64_reloc and 4 bytes in coff_amd64_rtype_to_howto. * reloc.c (bfd_perform_relocation): Revert 2021-01-12 and 2020-09-16 changes. * coff-x86_64.c (coff_amd64_reloc): Do more or less the same adjustments here instead. Separate pc-relative adjustments from symbol related adjustments. Tidy comments and formatting.
2021-01-07ELF: Don't generate unused section symbolsH.J. Lu1-0/+2
For ELF targets, section symbols are required only for relocations. With -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections, there can be many unused section symbols. Sizes of libstdc++.a on Linux/x86-64 in GCC 11 are With unused section symbols : 39411698 bytes Without unused section symbols: 39227002 bytes The unused section symbols in libstdc++.a occupy more than 180 KB. Add BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED to indicate if a section symbol should be included in the symbol table. The BSF_SECTION_SYM_USED should be set if the section symbol is used for relocation or the section symbol is always included in the symbol table. Add keep_unused_section_symbols to bfd_target to indicate if unused section symbols should be kept. If TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS is defined as FALSE, unused ection symbols will be removed. Tested on Linux/x86. Other ELF backends need to: 1. Define TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS to FALSE. 2. Mark used section symbols in assembler backend. 3. Remove unused section symbols from expected assembler and linker outputs. bfd/ PR 27109 * aix386-core.c (core_aix386_vec): Initialize keep_unused_section_symbol to TARGET_KEEP_UNUSED_SECTION_SYMBOLS. * aout-target.h (MY (vec)): Likewise. * binary.c (binary_vec): Likewise. * cisco-core.c (core_cisco_be_vec): Likewise. 2020-04-27x86: Add i386 PE big-object supportTamar Christina1-0/+73
The 64-bit version of binutils got support for the PE COFF BIG OBJ format a couple of years ago. The BIG OBJ format is a slightly different COFF format which extends the size of the number of section field in the header from a uint16_t to a uint32_t and so greatly increases the number of sections allowed. However the 32-bit version of bfd never got support for this. The GHC Haskell compiler generates a great deal of symbols due to it's use of -ffunction-sections and -fdata-sections. This meant that we could not build the 32-bit version of the GHC Compiler for many releases now as binutils didn't have this support. This patch adds the support to the 32-bit port of binutils as well and also does come cleanup in the code. bfd/ChangeLog: * coff-i386.c (COFF_WITH_PE_BIGOBJ): New. * coff-x86_64.c (COFF_WITH_PE_BIGOBJ): New. * config.bfd (targ_selvecs): Rename x86_64_pe_be_vec to x86_64_pe_big_vec as it not a big-endian format. 2019-11-25Pass section when available to bfd_octets_per_byteAlan Modra1-4/+7
and other tidies. I think it's better to default to passing the section to bfd_octets_per_byte, even in cases where we know it won't make a difference. A number of the coff reloc functions used bfd_octets_per_byte wrongly, not factoring it into the offset into the data buffer. As it happens, the targets using those files always had bfd_octets_per_byte equal to one, so there wasn't any detectable wrong behaviour. However, it is wrong in the source and might cause trouble for anyone creating a new target. 2018-02-16Remove bfd stub function casts.Alan Modra1-9/+21
This patch defines a bunch of new functions to use in the BFD target structs rather than casting bfd_false or bfd_true and similar stub functions. I've also renamed the stub functions to reflect their parameters and put "error" in the name if they set bfd_error. The latter change is important since there were quite a few uses of bfd_false where setting bfd_error was inappropriate, for example in elf_backend_allow_non_load_phdr and is_target_special_symbol. * libbfd.c (_bfd_bool_bfd_false_error): Rename from bfd_false. 2015-08-18Add output_type to bfd_link_infoH.J. Lu1-1/+1
The "shared" field in bfd_link_info is set for both DSO and and PIE. There are separate fields for executable and relocatable outputs. This patch adds an "output_type" field: enum output_type { type_unknown = 0, type_executable, type_dll, type_relocatable }; and a "pic" field to bfd_link_info to replace shared, executable and relocatable fields so that we can use the "output_type" field to check for output type and the "pic" field check if output is PIC. Macros, bfd_link_executable, bfd_link_dll, bfd_link_relocatable, bfd_link_pic and bfd_link_pie, are provided to check for output features. bfd/ * bfd/aoutx.h: Replace shared, executable, relocatable and pie fields with bfd_link_executable, bfd_link_dll, bfd_link_relocatable, bfd_link_pic and bfd_link_pie. * bfd/bout.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-alpha.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-arm.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-i386.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-i960.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-m68k.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-mcore.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-mips.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-ppc.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-rs6000.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-sh.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-tic80.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff-x86_64.c: Likewise. * bfd/coff64-rs6000.c: Likewise. * bfd/coffgen.c: Likewise. * bfd/cofflink.c: Likewise. * bfd/ecoff.c: Likewise. * bfd/ecofflink.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf-bfd.h: Likewise. * bfd/elf-eh-frame.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf-ifunc.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf-m10200.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf-m10300.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf-s390-common.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf-vxworks.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-arm.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-avr.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-bfin.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-cr16.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-cr16c.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-cris.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-crx.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-d10v.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-dlx.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-epiphany.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-fr30.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-frv.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-ft32.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-h8300.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-hppa.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-i370.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-i386.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-i860.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-ip2k.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-iq2000.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-lm32.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-m32c.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-m32r.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-m68hc11.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-m68hc1x.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-m68k.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-mcore.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-mep.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-metag.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-microblaze.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-moxie.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-msp430.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-mt.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-nds32.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-nios2.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-or1k.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-ppc.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-rl78.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-rx.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-s390.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-score.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-score7.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-sh-symbian.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-sh.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-sh64.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-spu.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-tic6x.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-tilepro.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-v850.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-vax.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-visium.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-xc16x.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-xstormy16.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf32-xtensa.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-alpha.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-hppa.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-ia64-vms.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-mmix.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-ppc.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-s390.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-sh64.c: Likewise. * bfd/elf64-x86-64.c: Likewise. * bfd/elflink.c: Likewise. * bfd/elfnn-aarch64.c: Likewise. * bfd/elfnn-ia64.c: Likewise. * bfd/elfxx-mips.c: Likewise. * bfd/elfxx-sparc.c: Likewise. * bfd/elfxx-tilegx.c: Likewise. * bfd/i386linux.c: Likewise. * bfd/linker.c: Likewise. * bfd/m68klinux.c: Likewise. * bfd/pdp11.c: Likewise. * bfd/pe-mips.c: Likewise. * bfd/peXXigen.c: Likewise. * bfd/reloc.c: Likewise. * bfd/reloc16.c: Likewise. * bfd/sparclinux.c: Likewise. * bfd/sunos.c: Likewise. * bfd/vms-alpha.c: Likewise. * bfd/xcofflink.c: Likewise. include/ * include/bfdlink.h (output_type): New enum.
